      If the date of my application affects the campus I would be sent to, would that affect the site location for my rounds as well? Like if I go to the IA campus, would I most likely stay in the Midwest region, or is that decision more random?

      Hey! (Sorry for the delayed response, I've been working abroad without a lot of wifi.)
      You basically work 5 days a week minimum, with 2 days off. (On some projects, mainly disaster, you could work 6 or 7 days a week.) You have what is called "Independent Service Projects" you need to complete (70hours in total) that you will need to do on the weekends. In the afternoons you also have team meetings, cook crews (where you take turns cooking), and will need to workout with your team.
      I know some people who did one or two classes while in NCCC, but there is a high chance you wont have wifi where you are in order to complete classes. You also may want to spend your free time exploring with your team.
      So, not a ton but it really depends on how you want to spend your time.

    Thanks so much for this video! I am a senior in hs and I am considering joining for a gap year. However, one of my concerns about joining is not being around other people my age. Would you say a lot of 18-19-year-olds join this program? Would you recommend someone just coming out of highs school? Thanks!

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +4

      Hi! It's awesome that you are looking at all your options!- I am a big fan of gap years!
      As far as age, the program is for 18-24 year olds. They do their best to really mix up the teams so you have a mix of ages and won't be the only 18 year old on your team. This program has tons of people coming right out of high school (at least half my team my first year was right out of high school and my second year teams had a mix of both as well). Of course it changes every year but I can guarantee you will not be alone. There are plenty of 18-19 year olds that will be experiencing it right along with you. And you will be able to be set up for success no matter your age.
      I do recommend this program for coming right out of high school. If I knew it existed when I was in high school I would have done it before college. Its a good way to get a lot of life experience, learn skills and make connections. During this time you get to know yourself and it allows for time to figure out if college is the right path for you, or what you may want to studying college, or what you want to go to.
      Especially since you meet SO many people with different experience: other members just coming out of different programs or colleges, or people in the communities you work with that have done a lot of different careers. You can get a lot of different ideas of what may be out there for you and learn what you want to do/what field you want to go into.
      The only thing I would say about coming right out of high school is that it does feel like you are kind of tossed out into the world right away. So be prepared for lots of surprises, twists and turns and life lessons (just like anything you do in life really).
      I hope I answered your questions! If you do decide to go this route good luck I hope its amazing! If not, there are lots of other gap year options, so dont stop looking until you find one you are excited about!

    I'm glad that I saw this video because I didn't know that the Baltimore Campus went defunct. I served at the Perry Point Campus back in 2007. My TL had served @ the old DC Campus as a regular "core member" the year prior before they merged with Perry Point. Also what she didn't mention was the fact that if you decided to do another Americorp's program "besides NCCC" then you are able to retrieve the end of the year grant as well. Just wanted to clarify that with folk's who are thinking of doing a different type of program (like Americorp's STATE or VISTA) later on in the future. Just a head's up though but it's a totally different type of ball game, where in this case you are on a team "however" you have to use your own transportation. If your lucky (like me) then you can always carpool with somebody. Americorp's NCCC is like Junior High School, Americorp's STATE is like High School and Americorp's VISTA is like Junior College. "lol"

    How many people in this program are in the age 22-24 range? I’m worried about being too old

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому

      Hi,
      Unfortunately I cant give you an exact number because every year and every class (the group of members who are apart of that year) is different. However its usually a good mix of all the age groups. But the majority of Team Leaders are usually over 21.
      Definitely dont worry about being too old! You will find people in that age range easily. They mix the teams up so it will not just be all 18 year olds and then you. It will be a people across each age range. They really do a good job of mixing it up.
      The only time age tends to matter is if you want to attend a 21+ event/activity on your off time. Then the under 21 crew has to find something else to do if they are unable to tag along- but thats an easy fix.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +3

      Yes, PT is not as scary as you think, it can also be pretty fun.
      You can bring food with you if you want, but I would just wait until you get there. When you have time you can go to the store and bring back any food you want to your housing (alcohol excluded). Usually my team, when at the grocery store to purchase team food/meals, would get all we need for the group budget and then use some time to go get our own snacks. So you defiantly have that option!
      Packing snacks for the trip to and from your projects, for the long van rides, can also be a lifesaver.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +1

      There are suppose to be between 8-12 people on a team for NCCC. While that is the norm, in reality it will depend on how many people are there your year (aka: the class size). My first year there were SO many people in the program we had teams up to 13/14 people. During the program, if a team gets too small they usually will disband the team and have the member go onto different teams.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +2

      Oh so much, haha. Definitely make sure you take time for yourself, make connections with fellow team leaders because they will be your support during your year, trust yourself when making decisions and know that you wont be able to please everyone and that is okay. Make sure you have fun and are learning things yourself, take opportunities and dont just pass them off to your members, you may be helping them to grow but you should also grow yourself. Above all, remember that all you get to do and the challenges you take on will make you a stronger leader.

    I have a disability and I’m currently in job corps I should be finishing soon I’m thinking about going to Americorps after I finish my trade do you think this is a good idea for me?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  2 роки тому +1

      Hi.
      When it comes to having a disability, Americorps does their best to accommodate what they can, so that you can participate in their program. I know many Americorps members who have a disability, and they participated in, and successfully completed, the program. So please dont let that hold you back!
      That being said, you know your body and yourself much more than anyone else does. So I would say it is more a matter of what you are comfortable with and what kinds of struggles you may be willing to face and overcome.
      When it comes to the Americorps program in this video, NCCC- there is a LOT of physical labor involved. You are on your feet 8 hours a day and are outside in the elements, with MOST projects that you are sent on. You can take breaks when you need to, and work with your team leader to talk about how often you may need to take them. Your unit leader (the people who decide what project you team goes on) will also take you into consideration when assigning your team a project, to help you get the most out of the program.
      If a less labor intensive program feels like a better fit for you, then Americorps also has their FEMA program. The set up is the same as NCCC (for the most part) but the project are different. With FEMA, it is a lot of paperwork/behind the scenes of disaster support services.
      There are also other americorps programs, like VISTA and State National, where you can kind of choose the work you do- but the programs are much different. (I have a video explaining the differences if that it helpful).
      I will also put in, that realistically (and I stress this this to everyone) this is a hard program. Not just with the work/labor you do, but living and working with a team of the same people all the time, the rules and exceptions of the program, the long hours, ect.... it can be very mentally draining, exhausting and frustrating at times.
      But, if you already know this, and want to do the program, then dont let anything hold you back!
      I hope I was able to answer your question. :)

      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +2

      Hi!
      Yes. When the program ends, you get to keep the uniform itself. But you have to finish the program, if you leave for any reason during the year then you have to return it to them.
      So you get to keep: The shirt, pants, shorts, boots, sweatshirt, fleece, hat, bandana, and gator.
      If you dont want it, you can give it back to them to reuse (which they will give out to the next years corps members who wreck their own uniforms from too much wear and tear).
      The other items they give you you must return. So the red bag, safety glasses, hard hat and such.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +1

      Hi!
      Yes. There are 4 Regions. No matter where you are from/applying from/living, you have to go to one of those regions. You will do your training in that location and then travel around the USA (within those regions) to different places and live in different communities.
      When you apply, depending on what term you are applying for (ex: summer start date or fall start date) you will be accepted to one, or possibly more, of those regions. Then you can accept or decline.
      If you want to stay in a specific location/place then I suggest checking out VISTA or State/National. That way you can choose where you go.

You can stop places along the way to where you are heading and get permission to use the van to travel to locations near you (depending on how far they are.) If not the team van, you can also rent a car on your own to head off for the weekend and see other things (as long as there is no work during those days and you let your TL know where you are headed).
