  • This video is just a few things that you should know before you start your year in AmeriCorps NCCC program.
    These 7 things are just a few of the things I wished I had known, or that will be important to know, before your year begins. You will most likely come face to face with all of these things at some point during your year, and they may be presented in different ways.
    Everything I talk about, while some may seem obvious, will hopefully help prepare you for your year in the NCCC program.
    This video is for anyone going through the program, both Team Leaders and Corps Members.
    Good luck during your service year and I hope this helps.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  2 місяці тому

      Hi! The regions each have a specific number of states allocated to them based on location, population, and a few other factors so they are able to cover/serve as many projects/communities as possible. It also helps with organization for project submissions and team assignments/support.
      I wish I could make a more detailed video because it's a great idea and there is a bit more to it. Unfortunately, at the moment I don't have time, but maybe in the future!

    Hi! Thank you so much for making these videos. I’m considering applying for NCCC, but am still pondering a few things. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me:
    1) Do you travel back to campus in between projects?
    2) Can I bring a book or two with me? Reading is a huge stress reliever for me, and I don’t know how I would survive for 10 months without it.
    Thank you so much!

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  Рік тому

      Hi! I’m glad I could help!
      You do travel back to campus between each round. So if you have a total of 3 rounds, you will return to campus at the end of each one to debrief your previous round and prepare for your next one. It is possible to have more than one project per round. If this happens, and it is common, you will go from one project to another and not return between that time- only at the end of the full round.
      Definitely bring some books along! Odds are you will finish them quickly, especially if you are sent to a rural location. I had several members who would get a temporary library card at the nearest library and borrow books while on projects. Both campuses I was at had book shelves filled with books from past members that you can use as well.
      Please let me know if you have any other questions! I’m happy to help!

    Amazing video! I just have one question if you can get to it. I run a lot more than the average person (about 10 miles a day). It only takes about 70ish mins and I'm willing to wake up early (sometimes I get up at 4 or 5 am if I have a busy day). Is this possible in the program and are we allowed to go running in the streets of the city or on local trails? Thanks!

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +2

      Hi!
      So with that, it really depends.
      Yes, you can definitely get up early before work to go running. On your campus (whichever one you go to) you will be able to find a place to run.
      When you are on your projects, the majority of the time you will be in a rural area and have trails close by.
      However, it is possible you may end up living in a city or a place where it is unsafe to run on the streets for various reasons. This means that you may have to take a buddy or may not be able to go far from housing. These situations can vary and it will depend on what your Team Leader or team decides.
      For example: my team lived in the woods of Idaho and I had a member who would get up before work, or wait till work was over, to go for runs or walks on the trails near by. However, when we lived in LA, the neighborhood wasn’t super safe so we didn’t leave the house without at least one other person. So during that time
      no one really went out around our neighborhood.
      I hope I explained that all right!

    • @ggardner5784
      @ggardner5784 3 роки тому +2

      @@theworkingexpat You explained that perfectly! :) In the LA situation, was there a gym or treadmill available anywhere nearby? I don't mind running a dull route or in a gym, as long as I get some exercise in.

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +2

      @@ggardner5784 yes we had a gym near by. There may not always be, but if there is than you would just have to get your Team Leader’s permission to take the van (with at least 1 other member on your team) to get to the gym, or be dropped off at the gym.

      @@assassindancer914 As long as you meet the minimum requirements it should be relatively easy to be accepted into the corps. They have many spots they need to fill and 4 different locations in the USA. I would apply early though, this way you have a better chance.

    IF YOU APPLY WITH YOUR FRIEND, AND YOU BOTH GET IN , IS IT LIKELY THAT YALL BE TOGETHER OR IN THE SAME STATE/CAMPUS?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  3 роки тому +4

      You could, but it depends. Each campus starts at different times during the year, (fall, summer or winter) so you will need to make sure you apply to the same start date. From there you will have a chance of getting the same campus (there are 4 in total) but it is not a definite. Your chance is most likely a 50/50 shot.
      Just know that while you will be based out of one state/campus, you will be traveling to different states with your team and you will most likely not be on the same team. The members I served with who knew each other from their hometowns were purposely put on different teams.

    Can you be in NCCC while also being in the national guard?

    • @theworkingexpat
      @theworkingexpat  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately you can not- not at the same time. Unless you are just active in the National guard and don’t have to do anything for them (I have no idea how the National Guard works).
      This is because, in NCCC, you have a lot to get done aside from the normal work day and your are expected to do it as a team, or with your team.
      For example, you have to live/stay with your team at the same housing, so after your work day you cant just leave to go somewhere else. Theres a lot more than just the 9-5 work day. You also need to travel with your team, get extra hours in on the weekends, have team meetings ect… its pretty much a full time job.
      I hope I explained that well.

      Hi,
      Yes they do random drugs tests and everyone must pass a drug test upon arrival (during training) to remain in the program.
      As for TVs, you might have access to them when you’re on campus (for a couple months), but odds are you wont have access to a TV for the majority of your projects.
