- We're moving to Portugal. Come along on an epic 12-day road trip to seven different Portuguese towns with filmmakers-turned-house-hunters Kim & Robert--we have less than two weeks to find a city we love and a home to rent, so we can apply for a Portugal D7 Visa! We road trip from Lisbon to visit a variety of places that may be a bit lesser-known, including: Nazaré, Coimbra, Lousã, Covilhã, Belmonte, the Serra da Estrela mountains and Tomar. Along the way, we also hike and drive winding roads to reach some remote and ancient schist stone villages of Talasnal, Candal and Piódão (Aldeias do Xisto).
Join us on a journey through stunning landscapes and charming towns of Portugal as we search for the perfect place to call home. From cozy village houses to modern apartments, we explore the unique properties that have caught our eye. An exciting adventure for sure!
We recap our road trip on a lovely Lisbon balcony and hope you find our journey fun and informative...

Yes, there are so many amazing places! 😃
Portugal. Is peace and nature !
Yes we love it! 💚💛❤️
Welcome to Covilha! That man singing fado for you, passed away 1/2 months ago, he was a symbol of our city!
We heard about his passing 💔. So fortunate to have been able to meet him and hear his amazing singing voice.
What an Honor to hear his voice!! Magic!! I can see why he was a symbol!!
Great video, it sure brings me back memories of the Beautiful I left behind. There are so many incredible places to visit . If you are interested in Portuguese History, check out a Love story that is part of the Portuguese History, and is a true story , unreal, but true " Pedro and Ines."
Thanks for the kind words. And yes, it is such a beautiful place. We’ve heard of the story before but need to read a full version so we get to know the love story better! 💜
Hi there. :) Make no mistake, Covilhã can be pretty hot in the summer. as it's very deeply inland the climate/weather tends to be dry and really hot throughout the summer months. I'd say temperatures in the mid 30s (and sometimes higher) are to be expected for an extended number of days.
Agreed, we’re not expecting no heat :) but it’s certainly cooler than some other parts of Portugal because of the altitude. Tomar and those areas are consistently hotter and similar to where we moved from, so we wanted to avoid 40 and above temps. Thanks for watching!
Lousã its easy to pronounce, think Zsa Zsa Gabor, and think low, then join them low Zsa. Lousã.
Great advice, we will remember that!
So glad for you guys. Where coming over in October for a look around Central Portugal. With the view of moving over next year when I finish my art degree.
You’ll love it, so much to discover and be inspired by!
Covilhã is a revelation. What a cool place!
Isn’t it fascinating? We fell in love!
Love this! We're planning our own family move to Portugal next year and learning so much from your videos
Glad you find them helpful, good luck with your move! 😀
This is stunning. Such good work.❤
Come to Portugal 🇵🇹😃
This is awesome. I can’t wait to see more of Portugal soon!
Amazing place...you're gonna love it!
OK I have to look into your newest videos. I have been watching videos on Covilha and Fundao. Headed over for 3 months looking for a small farm. I want to get more of your perspective. Gina in Upstate NY USA moving to Central Portugal
Great idea to take a few months to find your ideal spot!
Hi Robert and Kim. I really enjoyed your videos. I have watched 2 so far and they are soo informative and entertaining. I am in Arizona and contemplating if I can move to Portugal so I was excited to see your friend find a place in Belmonte. I look forward to more of your videos. I am watching oodles of expat videos and yours is the most informative out of the block so far. Have fun and thank you for your videos. Good luck with your channel:)
Thank you so much, we’re glad you found the videos helpful and entertaining!
Good luck with your research and move!
I wish you the best. I don't know why I kept getting ads every 5 minutes.
Thanks for the kind words!
And wow, that seems a lot! Our channel isn’t even monetized, so it seems UA-cam got carried away with ads.
FUN
💕🤓
You chose well 👏👍 spring time and the yellows on the countryside 👌
Yes, it’s so beautiful 😍
Hi Neighbor 💕 Just seeing this beautiful video you guys made!! Congratulations and welcome to Portugal! 🇵🇹 Beijos
Thank you, we had a lot of fun making it!
Such a wonderful story and start to your new exciting chapter in life. Meant to be and perfect match is exactly how to describe it. There truly are so many wonderful and incredible places to choose in Portugal. Plus no matter where you choose it's easy and incredibly fun to experience and explore all of Portugal! Congratulations and many Blessings...from Obidos :)
Thank you so much for the kind words, we’re loving it!
Foi um prazer viajar com vocês! 👍
Obrigada!
Great story and video. Loved how you blended in your clips with Google Earth, videos and background music. Very well done. 👍🏻 Also loved how you found your dream apartment just by talking to locals and your airbnb owner! Had a similar thought during our trip which ended a few weeks ago but honestly, we have to determine where our son can live first and then focus on that (or those) locations and replicate what you did. Overall this video was helpful for us. 🙏🏻 Looking forward to future content. Obrigado.
So glad the video was helpful. Yes, the locals were so amazingly welcoming an immediately wanting to help us find something. We’re very excited for the “big reveal” next week after all the renovations. We haven’t seen it finished yet!
We’ll keep you posted on what we find out and learn as we get settled
Following and living vicariously through you two! As a Luso Canadian who also collects records who'd love to have the guts to move there, your channel ticks a lot of boxes for me. Keep up the good work the videos are awesome.
Awww thanks for the kind words, happy to bring you along with us! 😃
I would suggest you two talk to Joseph, who has a youtube channel by the name "Farmer For Fun", and Ken, who has a channel "OK Portugal". Both have chosen Portugal as their residence and now helping others by showing some great properties. They aren't estate dealers, and Joseph mostly shows properties from around his neighborhood. Ken does some freelance work for clients in the way that they ask him to go and visit places in which they are interested, and he sends them a complete video tour of the property, which help them to shortlist properties to visit. Oh, and they usually cover Central Portugal, Joseph almost exclusively covers the area around Fundao where he resides, and Ken around Central Portugal. Another such resource is Nick with his channel "Destino Portugal". Don't complaint please, you said you like to do research :)
Yes we follow all those channels and will be happy to reach out to them when we are ready to buy. And thanks to lots of research we were able to find a perfect rental for us 😍, as shown in the video. Thanks for your suggestions and for watching!
u gonna love Covilhã...great balance city. if u need any info/suggestions for the northern part of Pt, feel free to reach out. Have a great life :) Cheers
Thank you-agreed, it is a terrific city! Yes we would love recommendations 🤗
@@BecomingPortuguese Viana do Castelo is amazing and all the way to Melgaço and Monção by the coast and then by the river is a cool trip. cheers
Wow! I really enjoyed this video. Thanks for the whirlwind tour. I did a scouting trip in November, and am going back in September. Fell in love with Tomar, but you were really selling Covilhã haha… do you feel like it’s too far east at times? Thanks for all the great videos, keep it up.
Thanks for the kind words!
I mean, we just fell in love with Covilhã but don’t think everyone should move here. Hoping to inspire the feeling of “inevitably“, regardless of place if that’s helpful? 🔓🤗
Oh, and so far no, the location is good. Pretty reasonable drive to Madrid too! There are several buses and trains each day to Lisbon, which makes it easy if we have to fly out for work.
Covilhã is great, the only problem is winter and the noised students
It’s okay, we like the winter 🥰
And I think our young adults might have fun with all the noisy students 😃
Good morning from Washington state folks, I'm watching your videos on my smart TV, I'm thinking about moving to Portugal as well, I'm looking the house, but D7 visa required $200000+ I think I sell my house first before hunting house,my income is not enough to move but I will visit the Portugal first how it looks like, thanks for sharing and good luck to your future and have a wonderful day and takecare, talk to you later bye-bye. 👍 🙏🙏
Hello, thanks for watching. Visiting first is for sure a great idea. There are so many cities, towns and villages that are great options!
I think you’re thinking of their Golden Visa, but that has ended and they’re no longer accepting applications for that one. We will soon do a video on the visa options, but here’s some a quick info:
For the D7 you need a Portuguese bank account with the equivalent to 12 months of their minimum wage deposited is required (which is currently €9160 total) plus at least their minimum wage in passive income, which is €760. Passive means retirements, royalties, or distributions from investments, etc.
There’s also the new digital nomad visa, which allows income from remote work (outside of Portugal), but the minimum monthly income is €3000.
Hope you enjoy a visit for your own house hunting!!
👍
Thank you! 🙏🏼😃
Welcome to Covilhã!! You chose almost the worst sounds for a foreigner: "lh" which is equivalent to the "ll" of Spanish, like in Sevilla (in fact so difficult that in south america it became "Sevidja". And the "ã"! Start by saying 'an' like in Kardashian. Or Magellan, whose real name is Magalhães.
Well, it could be worse: You could end up in Guimarães...
Haha, yes it’s not easy for us to pronounce…but wow, your tips are very helpful-thanks! And thank you for the warm welcome!
Sorry about our realtors they are not very proactive specially on small Vilas!
Which is understandable, we’re glad everything worked out well!
Hi! First of all, welcome to Portugal!
I don't want do discourage you, but Covilhã gets really, really hot during the summer. (my family is from Covilhã, on the paternal side), It is as hot as Tomar. The main difference is that you can escape to the Serra da Estrela. In august 2018 it was 42 in Covilhã but 32 in Covão d'Ametade and, I suspect, it would be even cooler right at the top. So, whenever in trouble with the heat, climb the mountain!
Great advice, thanks! We also sometimes have to work in Ireland, so perhaps the peak of summer is the time to be there :)
@@BecomingPortuguese I would do that! (but I hate the heat and love Ireland, so... ).
@@user-wp8fn1rk5d 😹
Well not much can be worse than the extreme heat we had in the US Midwest the past few years (up to 46!!), so everything will be an improvement from that 😅
@@BecomingPortuguese As we say in Portugal: "Livra!!" 😬
I can’t find a translation for the term “Livra” in European Portuguese-can you please explain? 🙏🏼
Posso?= may i(interrupt, suggest)
Thank you, I guess we were close enough to get them to suggest it to the owner! 🤓
Hi ,just found the channel, i moved in to Viseu district, chek it out, will be following, but publish more often :)
Thank you, we hope to publish every week :)
Great video but wrong choice of songs, next time try using Portuguese artists, there are quite a few good ones instead of Brazilian singers. Check out songs by Marisa, Antonio Zambujo, Barbara Tinoco,Paulo Gonzo.
Continue enjoying Portugal.
I wish, but those are copyrighted, we will keep searching! 😀
