Proof of it is the fact that even the Portuguese government pretended to fix it with a new bill that they passed last July called “home for all” which still favours Golden Visas and Digital Nomads holders over their native Portuguese. Portuguese are now starting to see rich foreigners who are buying our homes on the international house market as the source of the rising houses and rental prices. How can we compete with rich foreign who are buying our homes with our minimum salaries of €760 a month?!!!! The sad reality that Golden visa holders know that they benefit of free movement all over Europe when they buy a Portuguese home above a certain price, so the house prices were forcefully inflated to accommodate the value that guarantee them the status of Golden visa. Furthermore, as they all automatically get a Portuguese passport after 5years , which grants them free access to many countries without any commitment, really. They only have to stay 7days in the country a year to apply for a Golden visa, but they are allowed to affect the house market, our life style and our power of acquisition permanently. We live in a country with portuguese salaries, but our houses are on an international market, that is problem. In addition to this, our elderly people were forced out of their rental properties in the historic centres of cities such us Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Faro, Coimbra , Braga, Funchal, Ponta Delgada,Setubal, etc. This has killed our heritage, culture and social fabric to accommodate a superficial postcard tourism that has nothing to do with us Portuguese.

@@TravelingwithKristin I am from Lebanon. I am training myself to become a good digital nomad and planning seriously to move to this country if my plan worked but i have few question : Is Portugal as a whole environmentally friendly in general term ? Are there mountainous towns for people to live at ?
@@ghassanjenainaty4212 Yes, there are quite a few mountains in Portugal, if you like winter sports, skying or snow boarding Covilha city located in the Serra Da Estrela national park is a good city to live in. The Serra do Gerez national park, up north on the border with Spain is also a beautiful mountain resort, the Braga city nearby is a wonderful city to live in. Located in the center of Portugal near the historic city of Coimbra there is the Bussaco mountain with its 17th century Bussaco monastery and beautiful gardens, and more to the south near Setubal city, there is the Arrabida mountain and the Sado Estuary. There are more mountain chains and National parks in Portugal, from north to south, but you get the point. The climate in Portugal is a Mediterranean type of climate, not too hot nor too cold, the more south you go the hotter it gets in the summer, and you can refresh yourself on the numerous beaches along the Portuguese coast. If you go to the north of Portugal there is more rain in the winter and it can get a little chilly with the windshield factor getting close or bellow to 0 degree celsius on certain days. One of the main priorities of Portugal is to maintain and preserve the environment, its history and culture. Portugal is one of the leading European countries in electric power generation from renewal sources of energy, specially hydro electric and wind power. Hope this helps your decision.
This video is old, but I have looked on Idealista for properties in Figueira da Foz, which seems a great compromise to being really laid back beach living, but not too far away from Lisbon and Puerto. That said, I will probably end up in Spain which I'm way more familiar with.

Go to my city, Setubal, you won't regret it. 50mns south of Lisbon with beautiful beaches and the beloved Arrábida mountain/natural park. You can thank me later ☺️
I've looked at Portugal and reviewed various towns and areas. Don't want to be on the Algarve, too touristy, and I don't need to be close to a beach. Lisbon is too populated, but would want a historic town, I found Elvas, which is a very much overlooked UNESCO town in far eastern Portugal, which has everything I'm looking for and lower costs than other areas.
I thought your choice was interesting. I have been living in Portugal for thirty years and I too chose a small city to live in--Chaves, way up in the north. We of course didn't choose Chaves to retire in but to start a business so our situation was different. Elvas would be an "out of the box" choice because of its distance from all the tourist places and its proximity to a large Spanish city like Badajoz. We visited many years ago but I was planning to go back once the pandemic allows us to travel freely again. I wanted to go during the Easter holidays but we cannot leave our municipality. Perhaps in June. Remember that in Elvas almost no one speaks English and you wouldn't be able to find many expats with whom to socialize once in a while. This is the "problem" we have in Chaves. Chaves of course is much larger than Elvas and has several hipermarkets, a variety of international restaurants (two sushi restaurants) and even a McDonald's and Burger King. Elvas is more rural but you do have Badajoz only a few kilometers away. I hope you like hot summers because Elvas is very hot. Badajoz in fact has some of the highest temperatures in Spain during the summer.
I agree; if you're looking for a slow pace of life and low cost of living, there are many small towns that would be a better fit than the cities and tourist destinations
Hi there, I totally agree Elvas is really amazing and less than 20 minutes from great city in Spain. Vila Real and Chaves offer pretty good lifestyle and very close to Porto!
Great info. Every time I have visited a UNESCO world heritage site, I have felt that I could live there. Guanajuato, MX, Granda, Nicaragua, Sucre, Bolivia, Cuenca, Ecuador. Thank you for the information!

we have been living in Portugal for a while, and speak the language fairly well. We decided it's time to move out of Portugal. Cost of living in opposite of what people think is high. A very, very simple lifestyle will be approx. 2,000/month. Some of you guys might think this is ok. Compared to what ? keep in mind apt. are old, small, and of low quality. And is still old and small. Wanna do a business ? Good luck dealing with license , permission etc. I personally think a major correction is due in Portugal. It's all over-hyped and the PR agencies hired to promote Portugal are doing a great job attracting people to move to Portugal. 10.5 million Portuguese are paying the price for it. High cost of living, for a country that is considered as one of the poorest in EU. PR team is emphasizing the safety of Portugal....yes important but guess what EU countries in general are very safe.

Great video as always Kristin! Coimbra, Porto, and the Algarve are all spectacular. I would add Aveiro, which is about 40 mins south of Porto. It’s known as the “Venice of Portugal” for its canals, and amazing seafood. Évora, in the Alentejo, is another underrated gem. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site for its Roman Ruins and cathedral, plus has some of the best food in Portugal in my opinion. Can’t wait to explore that country again!
I am a big fan of Aveiro perhaps because I have been so many times due to one of my granddaughters studying at the university there. In Aveiro you get a big city feeling with a lot of traffic and hustle and bustle. There are great beaches nearby, really not in Aviero but in Ílhavo, and you have a ferry taking you over to the peninsula of São Jacinoto. One problem I see with the city is that rent would be high due to the many university students taking almost all the apartments.
Spot on about Sintra's climate. Took a train there in June from Lisbon, the blazing morning sun suddenly stopped after the train pulled out of the penultimate station and a dense fog fell. Still a wonderful place, and grateful for the cool when walking up to the Castelo dos Mouros, and we couldn't even see the ghastly but striking Palacio de Pena.

Great video, useful information, but - the greatest attraction of Portugal is the local PEOPLE, so charming, welcoming, unusually decent and tolerant. Without their virtues, nobody would feel welcome despite the beauty, nature, climate and cost of living.
We visited Lisbon, Porto, Ericeira, Douro Valley and stopped briefly in a couple other spots, too briefly to have an opinion. Each City has a wildly different vibe. What surprised me the most was the terrain. Walking Lisbon and Porto is a workout. The sidewalks and streets, in most touristy areas in Lisbon and Porto (except next to water), were super unfriendly to wheelchairs and people who would have trouble with steps, hills and uneven surfaces. We loved it and will go back soon, however those who have issues with physical disabilities need to be aware.

Yeah I’m from Coimbra. And I’m quite confused with that. I mean I guess if you pay rent for 3 or 4 apartments in different Parts of the city, if you eat caviar everyday, if you buy a 50” TV every month, and other ridiculous luxuries, I can see 5k a month. But why? If you live in Coimbra and you spending even half of that monthly; you doing a lot of things wrong.

I was born in Lisbon and moved to England in the 90s because of the lack of jobs, better education, better opportunities... like 100s of thousands of migrants. When I was at school in the late 1980s and early 1990s we were told that the plan for Portugal in Europe was to turn it in to a tourist destination. Well they truly achieved their goal. Its crazy that the people that were born there had to leave in great numbers and now Americans, Germans, English... are enjoying our country.

Thank you for this great video. When you said Lagos reminds you of Gozo, it made me smile, as I was thinking the same. Rather than thousands flying from the U.S. I have a lot of places to look for housing in now, thanks to your list. Thanks again for for direction. Algarve is such a general search!
We live in Cascais, its gorgeous and chill but super easy to get to city center Lisbon if you want. A bit pricey but if you’re not in the center of town you can still find some reasonable flats!
You forgot to mention AVEIRO. This region includes villages such as Murtosa, Torreira, Bestida and Sao Jacinto which are some of the most beautiful regions of northern Portugal. I know because I have been there and highly recommend it.
Thanks Manny! I almost included it but decided against it at the last minute due to some criticisms I found online about it being too small and touristy (because I haven't been there). But it's all subjective!
Well, I visited Portugal last June and I can say, it depends on what you like to do and your personality. IMO, Lisbon is better choice for people who likes night life. I didn't like Lisbon, it remembered me Old Town in Brazilian cities (which at some point are older than Lisbon after 1755 earthquake). On one hand, you have narrow and steep streets, crowded metro, poor people on the street, drug sellers around downtown. On the other hand, you have a variety of night clubs, food, bakery and good sights. I liked Porto, not big city but not too small, good public transport and well connected to other cities. Nice food, wine and bakery. About the Algarve, you combine nice beaches with astonishing views. The towns are small, so you have limited number of night clubs. The transport between towns is terrific, it's recommended to have a car. A town I would add to your Algarve list is Carvoeiro.

I also had the same reaction as you did. Few people in Coimbra have 5000 dollars a month to spend. Coimbra is not considered by Portuguese to be an expensive city. What we have to look at is rent in different places. Everything else (groceries, utilities, transport, restaurants) is about the same. Lisbon is definitely the most expensive place to live in due to high rent. Maybe Porto would be second, and then Braga and Coimbra. If you really wanted to save on rent, you could live in Viseu, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Figueira da Foz, or maybe Leiria. @@TravelingwithKristin I am from Lebanon. I am training myself to become a good digital nomad and planning seriously to move to this country if my plan worked but i have few question : Is Portugal as a whole environmentally friendly in general term ? Are there mountainous towns for people to live at ?
Did you like to live in Lisbon? I like more cities with lots of histories, traditions.

I was born in Lisbon Portugal, live in USA Today for 35 years, still have family there , I miss Portugal 🇵🇹
Come back 😊 we miss our people.
Hope you go back to Portugal soon. 😊
Hi there,
I totally agree Elvas is really amazing and less than 20 minutes from great city in Spain.
Vila Real and Chaves offer pretty good lifestyle and very close to Porto!

we have been living in Portugal for a while, and speak the language fairly well. We decided it's time to move out of Portugal. Cost of living in opposite of what people think is high. A very, very simple lifestyle will be approx. 2,000/month. Some of you guys might think this is ok. Compared to what ? keep in mind apt. are old, small, and of low quality. An old , small, ran down apt. will cost around 700-900 Euro/month. If you would like to live in a nice areas in Lisbon or Cascais the same apt. will cost you approx. 1,200/month.

Thanks for sharing Michelle! All the best to you 😊
Wow, this video was really well made. Well done
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed and nice to meet you :)
You have very good English. I am from Brazil. I am sending your videos for my friends that are learning English.
Awesome, thank you Ana! 💗
i find your content for traveller so helpful and i love the way you explain it on details. thank you for sharing this.
Thank you, Lucy; I’m so happy to help. 😊
She’s really doing the best
Over 38 years away from 'home' (U.K) here, and considering Portugal as my next stop!
Go for it Andy! :D
I knew Ericeira would be #1 since its the surfing capital of Europe. Only place I liked that you didn't mention is Caldas da Rainha. Guimarães is also good if you like medieval history and the best burger in portugal . Its a little hotter since its closer to the interior of the country and you have to drive 45 mins to the ocean.
Haha maybe I'm a little bit biased ;) Thanks for the tip on Caldas da Rainha! Haven't been there yet and I'm also very inclined to try the best burger in Portugal 😜🍔
I love everything you say can’t decide on where to retire but I know I will be happy. I live Portugal!
This is way better than the Travel Channel on cable TV.
Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you for this great video. When you said Lagos reminds you of Gozo, it made me smile, as I was thinking the same. My mother is from Malta, and I love that it will cost less than $400 per person to fly there, to see my family, from Portugal. Rather than thousands flying from the U.S. I have a lot of places to look for housing in now, thanks to your list. Thanks again for for direction. Algarve is such a general search!
Glad you enjoyed it and you're welcome!
Thanks! I was in Portugal in 1990. Inexpensive and nice people. If I could that is where I would like to live. From CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA. 🐬🐧🐳
Thanks for sharing!💛
Wow ! Portugal looks stunningly beautiful 😍 ❤ I have to visit that country and wouldn't mind retirement there eventually 😀
It really is!
@@TravelingwithKristin you should come, but don't add it to the list. Lets keep it a secret.
Yes i heard it is
Well, I visited Portugal last June and I can say, it depends on what you like to do and your personality.
Thanks for sharing these, Pablo! 😊
Great Video….Small country, but lots to see and do…. My favourite part of your great video was your pronunciation of Sintra…Perfect. Surprised by Ericeira though
Thanks Russ! I speak Spanish so maybe that helps ;)
Wow, Kristin I got totally overwhelmed by all those beautiful cities in Portugal! I need to go there!
Glad you liked the video Kevin, You should!
@@TravelingwithKristin It would be a lot more fun with someone who is as experienced as you are dear. I haven't got much international travel under my belt!
Looks wonderful and very civilised country ....i,mm dreaming
Hope you can visit someday!
thank you for this video so helpful and WOW Portugal looks like one of the most beautiful places on earth!!!
Cool video! We may have commented before but we just love following your videos. We live on a sailboat, preparing to sail around the world. Maybe we will cross paths in our nomadic travels! :)
That would be great! Do you know Ruby Rose? www.badassdigitalnomads.com/sailing-the-world-with-sailing-ruby-rose/
Thanks for your videos on Portugal, Kristin!!
Very thankful to this video
Most welcome
Hi, if you could update this video after pendamic, that would be great information and help.
Kristin, how did you came up with the $5000/month in Coimbra? Too steep for my country. I don´t think that even in Lisbon and Porto reach those amounts, unless you live in a luxury apartment.
Hi Bruno, that is the Expat or digital nomad cost of living on nomadlist.com but maybe it's based on higher than average short term rental prices
@@TravelingwithKristin great site. Didn´t know about it. Still, information presented there, at least for Portugal which is where i am from, doesnt seem realistic. $5000 fro Coimbra is way to much, and 1700 for Lisbon, i think is low. Has with all things, people should do their research. I am just giving this info so that expats looking to come to my country dont be scared about some costs. Take Care
I live in Chaves, where there are no expats, and I am used to it. It's not for everyone though.
@@rayvogensen2983 agreed.
I average 2k a month including rent, food and utilities...Entertainment and Travel...living in Lisboa...😉
My favorite video I’ve watched so far while doing my Portugal research 😍
Glad you found the video helpful for your research Kate!
I saw a direct flight from Boston to Ponta Delgada for $200 a couple weeks ago. I’m still kicking myself for not jumping on that.
Wow that's amazing! Which site?
@@TravelingwithKristin Azores Airlines has that for $475 RT ($237 one way).
Also, New York
Porto $362 RT (Air France) via Paris (CDC) with multi-day/stop-over layover if desired.
@@TravelingwithKristin I found it on Google Flights. It was Azores Airlines. The least expensive way to get there is from Lisbon or Porto - routinely under $100 round trip.
@@A_Bunch_of_Savages I've taken that flight, its a pretty normal fare, so don't sweat it, and book whenever you can. Best to just book directly through their website. They also fly several times a week nonstop between PDL and Madeira (FNC) for about $100 roundtrip, I've taken that flight too....2 hours in a prop plane.
Wow !
I'm gonna look myself...wouldn't want to miss a deal like that !
I recently discovered your channel. Better late than never.
Portugal is tops on my list to relocate to. I'll be retiring though not working. Thanks for some suggestions of places I was unaware of.
Great job looking forward to watching more of your content.
Welcome to my channel, Larry! Glad you liked my suggestions and my content. Hope you enjoy my other videos and feel free to reach out if you need help with relocation.
Very interesting and informative video, I hope I can go to Portugal in the near future😊👍
Thank you; I hope we can all go back there soon!
Faro is lovely but step back and inland to Loulé, it's my favourite town and only about 20 minutes from the coast by car.
I love, love, love this video. You are just such a smart and inspirational DN! ;-) Thank You.
Thanks Rich! Appreciate the kind words :)
I find your video the best out of all available about the subject. My picks are Madeira (as I've been there), Algarve and Ericera. Thanks for sharing.
Good choice! Thanks for sharing and for watching Wojciech!
You can add to the list the citys Aveiro, Guimarães, Viana do Castelo, Viseu, Vila Real, Leiria, Évora
I know! All great places but Aveiro looked a bit touristy...
Thanks, I knew nothing about Guimarães - looks very nice. One thing on my list for the ideal location, is a place where people don't say rr like they're trying to get something unstuck in their mouth, and often this seems to be an advantage of the northern interior that might compensate for the colder winters.
What is the dynamic between the Young working remotely folks and the Retirees living in Portugal as Ex-Pats?? There seems to be a convergence of communities and it would be interesting to know of the interactions between them.
Besides the place being awesome, the people are friendly, helpful with a Chilled and laid-back vibe ❤️🇵🇹🇵🇹❤️
True! Thanks for sharing!
Burgao is quaint. I also really liked Vila do Bispo and Bordeira. Quieter and the coastline is amazing. Sintra is beautiful, but so busy. I would like to check out Ericeira.
Madeira is my top destination to go next.
Totally agree!
I would put Porto in a much higher place if not in 1st place! Due to quality of life, amenities and yet still more affordable than Lisbon!
I also would add Aveiro to the list!
Thanks Helder! I ALMOST added Aveiro but I had to cut it for the top 10
this is a great video. 've seen it over 10 times now always finding something new...amazing!!!
Another great video! I live near Portugal and I love Porto, I was there last year and I hope to visit Sintra soon. Thank you for sharing;)
Thank you! So lucky that you live near Porto :)
Been traveling to Portugal for over 12 years now. One specific region to mention if you like Madeira but don’t like to travel to far away from Europe : GÓIS - LOUSÃ region
Thanks for sharing Heidi!
Very well done! I do suspect that those amazing bar drinks and japanese sushi bars can be expensive.
Thanks Michael! Actually eating out was quite affordable. The sushi was at one of those food courts where there are a lot of different restaurants so it wasn’t so bad but it looked really fancy 😊
@@TravelingwithKristin i am in process of selling my home and heading overseas as an expat. My 2nd dose is april 8. First stop iceland.
Thank you Kristin,
I take the road less traveled also and so I truly appreciate your videos. They are valuable sources of answered questions.
I will be seeking more as I prepare my move to Portugal. 😊
You're welcome, Catherine! Glad I could help. All the best to you 🙏
I enjoyed greatly viewing your video but I believe you might have over-estimated the figures for the cost of living. Yes, by Portugal's standards Lisbon is getting more expensive to live but the rest of the country is a total bargain. I am talking about cities and towns up and down the coast like Aveiro and Figueira da Foz. And if you go inland, to cities like Viseu, Santarem and Beja, things get even more affordable.
Thanks Jack; would you say the cost of living is less than $1,000 though? Many of the places I listed were $1-2k per month, which I think is very low and reasonable for foreigners.
@@TravelingwithKristin I am sure that in cities like Aveiro for example (and its surrounding towns) you are able to live comfortably for $1000/month or less (you define comfort).
