I just love how he slides off the pitch so often, it gives this sense of desperation, of a man careening out of control that is just so fitting to the theme of the song. One of my favorite songs and singers of all time. ❤

I tear up every time I see Jeff sing. I was lucky enough to be playing music in NYC in the 90s, and I shared a few nights with him at Sin-e (just luck of the draw) before he started really attracting his followers. Just Jeff and his Tele, and a half-full unassuming cafe on St. Mark's. Those were truly magical afternoons and evenings, he was so incredibly captivating and generous and brave! Nobody was surprised when after a very short time it was impossible to get in when he was there. We'd turn the corner at the top of the block and see crowds of people outside the large windows, spilling out into the streets, and we'd know, "Jeff must be playing." And, it was not long until he was gone. Tragic, gorgeous life.

@jackiewilliams4854 Indeed. I think that's what seperates him from a cadre of poppier singers over the years who just sound like they're doing vocal acrobatics. They don't have the emotional range to match their vocal ranges so it sounds gratuitous. But Jeff Buckley, wow, he's got so much soul. He throws all of his emotions into the song and the vocals are just an honest extension of that. It's the difference between sport and art, gymnastics and Baryshnikov.

I used to walk in Tom Lee Park in Memphis after I got off from work. I would take my Martin acoustic guitar with me and walk up and down the edge of the river @4 times a week. I met a guy a few times who would be grinning ear to ear and would just start vocalizing along with me. Just out instruments being offered to heaven. I remember his voice sounding like the highest quality ingredients cooked just right, then brought back to life and released to Heaven and Earth. He was enthralled by what I was playing on my guitar. Then one day the police wouldn't let anyone near that spot for a few days. The angel I met became an actual angel that day. It was Jeff Buckley, and I was never Jason Cremeans the same way ever again. He was a true artist. He only cares about expressing himself. I'm sure he is teaching angels how to sing today. I hope some day I will find my mom in heaven and take her to meet Jeff and she can hear us play music together if even for a few minutes.

Ummm... He had a hell of the voice. As a songwriter he was way below his father. Too many covers (Lilac Wine, Hallelujah, Corpus Christi Carol), lyrics are more faux-depressive than emotional and lotsa filler. I wore out "Grace" when acquired it but quickly grew bored with it. Grace, Lover, You Should've Come Over and Last Goodbye are standouts, his forays to alternative rock ended up as duds (So Real, Eternal Life) and the rest could be passable. Stuck with his sophomore album with only three meaningful songs (The Sky Is a Landfill, Everybody Here Wants You, Vancouver) and the rest of a throwaway quality, having a hard time coming up with new songs before the tragedy struck. "Grace" remains his career high moment although late vocal acrobatics should've been channelled into something more meaningful.

The face you make at 16:29 is exactly the face everyone makes at some point during their first listen to JB. I have been dying for you to listen to him, as he's considered one of the greatest vocalists of all time by his peers. In a poll conducted by Mojo magazine (back in the early 2000's) of the greatest vocalists of all time as voted on by famous vocalists, he placed number 34 after only one proper studio album released during his life. He's still considered a huge artist although he wasn't nearly that big during his life, unfortunately, at least here in the states. This performance is from his Chicago show which is available on DVD and highly recommended. You're going to get a ton of people telling you various live performances to check out and you should. His cover of "The Way Young Lovers Do" from his first EP is stunning, but stick to his originals when you can because he was an incredible writer/guitarist along with vocalist. Also of note, on that list of greatest vocalists, Jeff's dad, Tim Buckley ranked #41 - famous for his 5 1/2 octave range, he would be an entirely different rabbit hole to explore after you've exhausted this one. I'm just so excited you finally got around to listening to JB - I have his autograph on a magazine in a frame and it's one of my prized possessions. Jeff is one of one - you're right, you'd have remembered hearing him before. Thank you for the content and please keep exploring these older artists from the 90's - I love hearing your thoughts and seeing you react to them.

Jeff is litterally a gold mine of music, once I discovered his music, you just want more, you just want to hear all.
The crazy thing is that all live songs were expressed so differently, on purpose, so much of the same songs made differently.
The strong dark "So Real", could sound etheral in his live at Frankfurt.
The Halellujah well known song could sound like an haunting song in is live in Paris.
And doing his own versions of well known songs, and making it completely differently, making it his songs.
The "Calling You" from Badgad Café from Jeff, is beautiful
The "Je n'en connais pas la fin" of Piaf, is made like a romantic "ritournelle"
Grace is musical work of its own.
I litterally got addicted to his music, his universe.
It is so sad we lost him so soon.. the sketch of his second album is just the proof that he could just be in every genre of the music spectrum.
But what he left, oh man, is so worth listening.
