I rarely comment... but Jeff and I were friends, along with Rufus Wainwright in New York at the time... He really was a lovely person - one of those friends you could love on and appreciate without fear - truly exposed heart on the sleeve human - someone you'd never want to leave your life - fun, get into trouble, but sincere sweet and kind. Its been so many years and I miss him so much. To have a friend so talented and that you are proud of was a true gift. Precious. Its been like twenty years and I'm compelled to comment. We had honest good fun together and I'll miss him forever. Rick, your channel is awesome. I wish you and your family the very best. Ugh, this human existence can be really trying.
What was Jeff like as a person? Like, behind all the enigma, what was he like just as a guy?
@@D4n1t0o I find it very odd to comment again. I'm close to 50 now... Jeff I think was a couple years older than me... what was he like as just a guy? Not typical.. I used to think most people were entertainers/artsy but just held back or subdued - but as time as gone by I have come to understand that there are a lot of 'average normal non creative oblivious blah' men out there. He was not. He was sensitive, and aware of his surroundings - he paid attention to things and those around him - we were very similar and that's why when together which was not very often we got along like we never parted. He wasn't picky about most stuff, he was compassionate, yet he was a perfectionist - and a stickler for justice. Noticing people doing other people wrong brought out a sense of anger? Intolerant of others behaving inconsiderate perhaps? Goofy as hell at times, but serious as hell too - it's like we live on a scale - the goofier you are equally as serious you can be. We were young. We were good looking. There was lots of attention and it was easy to indulge but at the heart of it all there was a need to pony up and perform and create something good. At the heart of it all, I'd say the both of us just wanted to really fall in love and be loved and express our talents - but the business side of things isn't healthy, and there was a conflict there which caused grief. Ugh, let's just say his personality was inspiring and you'd like to be around - yeah, troubled emotional artist with heart ache and such, but always encouraged you that you can do better and be better... positive to be around.

His 2nd album would’ve been something of a back in nyc kinda sound. U can hear he’s been experimenting a lot with those synth sounds besides a couple of soul songs on that album.. assuming those r the materials
The silver lining in this type of genius leaving us early is that we are inspired to imagine where it would have lead to and realize it ourselves through that inspiration. A passing of the torch of sorts to finish what seems unfinished. Sort of like his reference to Muse near the end of this video. Great stuff though, definitely would love to have heard what he would have done and still very inspiring.
@@jingyitay6179 I’m not so sure about that. Jeff Buckley had to leave NY and go down south to write the follow up to Grace, and he did just that. It took him a while to get going and he was able to accomplish a demo of sorts. The night before the band was to arrive is when Jeff walked into the murky river, boots and all, and never returned.
Yes. Jeff traveled to Memphis to write new material and rework the structure of a handful of previously written/recorded/rehearsed songs (e.g. Witches' Rave, Moodswing Whiskey, I Know We Could Be So Happy Baby) after he was dissatisfied with the Verlaine sessions from late '96 and early '97. His last performance in NYC at Arlene's Grocery shows that he was messing around with the arrangement/lyrics of some of those songs from the Verlaine sessions (The Sky Is A Landfill, Nightmare By The Sea, Witches' Rave, Vancouver).

I cried more for Jeff Buckley than I cried for Kurt Cobain a few years before. In the south of France were I was from, Jeff Buckley's songs were almost confidential, but he surely sang the soundtrack of my own teenage years. Never managed to see him perform in Paris, one of my biggest regrets.
Vancouver is fucking amazing. It's not just one of my fav Jeff Buckley songs, it's one of my fav songs ever. Incredible.

EpicStrawberries Thom York’s said in an interview that they went to see Jeff Buckley play while they were recording The Bends and went straight back to the studio that night to track his vocal for Fake Plastic Trees. He said seeing Jeff gave him the inspiration and courage to really go for it with the falsetto.

I was living in Austin, Tx in the early 90’s. A friend I worked with asked me to go with him to check out this songwriter at Waterloo Records. My friend had a mullet and I had my doubts.. lol. Waterloo gave you up to three free beers from a keg inside the record shop. I was thumbing through cds while the three piece band setup and had Captain Beefheart’s “Safe as Milk” in my hands when they kicked into “last goodbye” and my jaw hit the floor. I’m getting chills thinking about it. I couldn’t believe how good they were. I bought Grace and shook Jeff’s hand and told him I just couldn’t believe it. We spoke for about 30 seconds face to face, super cool dude.
Vancouver is my favorite track on sweetheart! And I’ll say this, “Everybody here wants you” is one of the sexiest tunes ever written man. I’ve got some unique chords I’ve found on guitar, me and my buds call them the Buckley chords. LOL. Cheers.
Irony. I heard Jeff's dad Tim play in a small club in Vancouver in about 1975. A fond memory from my youth. Really sad that both father and son died way way too young. Both were unique musicians and voices.
And, sadly, barely knew one another.

An interesting and perhaps not super well-known fact about the Rickenbacker 12-string Jeff Buckley used on this song (and many others): it was given to Chris Cornell by Jeff's mother, as a thank-you gesture for Cornell acting as a buffer (and for "quality control") between Buckley's family and Columbia, as they were putting together Sketches for my Sweetheart the Drunk.

I did not know this. Thanks! A dear friend turned me on to Jeff around '02. I'm usually late to the party. I put Grace in my car's disk player and listened to it exclusively for 4 years never skipping a track. I'm a sponge for all things Buckley. I can't wait to see this video (I'm at work). Thanks Dale for the tidbit and Rick for being awesome yet again.
@@drewepton The best! Oddly, I too got set straight a bit late... Around 1998? I'd heard of him, crazily, because a friend of mine went to high school with him... And she even invited me to a show of his at the American Legion Hall back in... 1995, or something? But I didn't go, because I was way more into wacky stuff... and I honestly didn't know anything about him at all (hadn't heard a note). Then waaaay later, I read that he'd passed... and found the two discs set of Sketches, thinking it was actually a greatest hits collection, LOL. I bought it, and was forever changed.

A lot of the best musicians out there couldn't/can't read music either. In fact you could say they're almost 'better' musicians because they do it all naturally by ear, and 'feel' the music rather than thinking about chord structures etc.

The thing I like about Jeff's music is it's lack of basic genre. He produced relatively little (sadly), but of what there is, there's such breadth, especially on the Grace album.
Sorry to be 'that guy' but I was extremely fortunate to hear Jeff and his band play this song live on their final tour in early 1996, complete with lyrics after they had previously played it for months in concert instrumentally. Jeff must have really loved the song to have developed it that way over such a long time. They finished with Vancouver and a typically epic Kanga-Roo by Big Star, it was probably the best concert I've ever experienced.

I think "criminally underrated" is perhaps the wrong term. Among those of us who remember, and are actually musically savvy enough to "rate" him, I think he's quite highly regarded. - "Under acknowledged" however might be a much more accurate observation. jmo

Love how you talk about your mixed feelings about listening to the album at all because of concerns that these weren't songs Jeff would have wanted anybody to hear. That's a real conflict for me for posthumous releases. Agree with you about this one - this song deserved to be heard.

After all these years, I still can't bring myself to listen to the album.
Grace spoiled it for me. In my mind, this is and will always be one of the most perfect albums. A pouring of emotion. I cannot fault it - every song feels like we have been given 100% access to a young Jeff Buckley, his life, his loves his deepest feelings.
Anything after, especially released without his final mark of approval, feels like it would be someone else's vision.
But I am grateful to have watched this video, and the insight into this song. I might soften today and finally seek out the album.
Jeff Buckley is such an amazing artist and guitarist indeed! I really appreciate the purpose of this series, being to dive into more underrated tracks that may be overshadowed by more iconic tracks! Hope this series takes off!

We must've been neighbors, Rick! From '94-'98, I lived at 7 St. Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd. I used to run into Jeff too. He lived on 9th Street. You and I probably ran into each other a few times. Jeff was my hero. To me, he was gonna save everything that was Rock Music. Still not completely over his death. To think what would have been :/

I watched the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert two nights ago and when Violet Grohl sang Last Goodbye I said to my wife it had been such a long time since I heard that song, a really long time. Then she sang Grace and I loved it. I listened to Grace (the album) later that night and I was completely blown away. I then went back and listened to the title track over and over again and I can honestly say it's probably, no definitely, one of the greatest songs I have ever heard in my life. I can't explain it but it is absolutely incredible. It's a masterpiece, pure and simple.

I have to thank Rick from the bottom of my heart for turning me onto Jeff Buckley recently. Jeff is the only performer that ever made me really want to cry listening to Lover, You Should've Come Over. I'm kind of glad I discovered him now instead of 25 years ago because I can appreciate and enjoy it more. Thanks again Rick Beato for your great channel.

Lover You Should Have Come Over is one of the most brilliant songs I’ve ever heard in fact it was the first song of Jeff’s I heard and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, I’m new to him, I looked him up and learned he was dead and damm.
There's an aussie equivalent of the bbc. Its called abc. They have an alternative radio station called Triple J. Every yr they have a poll on the top 100 songs of the yr called the Hottest 100. And every so often they have the hottest 100 of all time. Every SINGLE time theyve done that there's been at least 3 jeff buckley songs:

Theyve appeared all 4 times
Hallelujah has appeared once. At #3
Smells Like Teen Spirit has been #1 every time.

A brilliant composer in his own right, but immortalized by a cover of someone else's song, just like what happened to Sinéad O'Connor. Though it is a testament to what a fantastic vocalist he was, as well as O'Connor, it's also kind of sad.
I was just listening to this the other day and thought damn this is a brilliant song. I used to hang with Matt Johnson back when he was living in Brooklyn. Super nice guy. This was when he was playing in Rufus Wainwright’s band. I first met him at the Time Cafe in Manhattan years ago when I checked out a show there with a producer friend, Kieran Kelly. Matt talked about Jeff and that time period very openly, but he definitely viewed those days with awkwardness and in his words “painful times”. I think these days he thinks of those days more fondly. He also mentioned he was supposed to tour with Chris Cornell for the Carry On album (I think Gary Lucas payed guitar on it). A few years later he ended up recording with Angus and Julie Stone at Kieran’s studio. Kieran knew Matt and Jeff a bit back when he was living in New Orleans (where he’s from). Kieran once told me Jeff told him how much Shudder to Think made him jealous. Kieran also ended up producing Matt Johnson’s first solo album which is really good. Matt’s a great guitarist. I think he’s living in LA now cause he’s doing more session work these days and to be closer to his son.
Gary Lucas is a great player. Love the stuff he did with Captain Beefheart.

I can definitely hear a Shudder to Think influence in the vocal melody of "Vancouver".
rdsx463724 I didn’t prod him too much. I think towards the end the band was a bit dysfunctional at times. This was also the first time these NYC guys experienced that level of success. I’m sure people that knew the guys well back then would know better. I know from mutual friends that Jeff started to dislike Matt’s playing towards the end for whatever reason. I think he wanted a sloppier drummer from what I understand. Matt’s a powerhouse of course, he’s drummed for John Mayer, Rufus Wainwright, Beth Orton, Duncan Sheik, Angus & Julie Stone, and now with St. Vincent.

I've just watched this video for about the 3rd time.... Maybe next time I'll grab a guitar and try to play along to it.... Its one of the best rock songs I've heard in about 55 years of listening to modern music..... Just everything about it.... Vocals bass drums theramin... Not just guitars..... I remember crying big tears for about two days back in 1997 hearing about his passing.... It didn't seem real.... Such a waste.... My son is 31, plays in a band..... and he LOVES this track and watches 'Live in a Chicago' regularly!! Ric Beato you deserve a medal!!!!

because of what happened, for me, vancouver became jeff's mangnum opus. i missed finding jeff in the 90's. i don't know how, but that has happened to me before in 60 years of music. i found jeff, thankfully, around 2015. and then i was heartbroken. i hope i would have known how special he was when he was alive, but who knows? the lesson i learned from him was that i do not take any of my friends and family, especially my music friends, for granted ever. creative people are precious gifts who make life better. grace is one of my favorite albums ever, pure genius. sketches for my sweetheart the drunk is beautiful and haunting. vancouver is my desert island song...if i only had one song that i could ever listen to again. 💫

A truly sacred musical moment for me was when I heard a recording of Jeff Buckley singing "Dido's Lament."
I love Jeff Buckley’s music. I grew up with his music because my parents love him too, so the album “Grace” is extra nostalgic for me. You should make more videos on Jeff’s songs. Everyone else on UA-cam focuses on his godly singing, but no one talks about the chords and the instrumentals.
It seems a lot of people have Jeff stories. I met him in Toronto while he was touring Grace in 1994. I was a DJ at a University radio station and had the pleasure to interview Jeff prior to his incredible concert at the Trinity Church. He was a kind soul and was very patient with me as a silly kid awkwardly conducting my interview. His death was a tragic loss for all of us. And thank you for you thoughtful analysis.

I got to see Jeff play at Barristers in Memphis just a couple of weeks before he died. Before he played, I had the good fortune to meet him and talk over beers for a few minutes. Such a lovely, approachable, genuine person. And then he went on stage and just worked through some ideas he had, going off in different directions as the mood struck him. It was truly a unique experience. I was absolutely devastated when he died and I still have a hard time listening to any of his music without choking up. Watching you geek out in this video brought a huge smile to my face. Thanks, Rick.

Jeff Buckley, by far my favourite musician ever. I can't remember ever being stopped in my place hearing a song for the first time. But Grace did it. On MTV mind you. His death hit me like a sledge hammer.

"last goodbye" hit me like a sledgehammer but the other songs on Grace didn't. I have Grace and will have to really give it a careful listen. Never really got past Hallelujah and Last Goodbye.
I gave you a like just right after reading the name Jeff Buckley. His music is so deep in feelings tha almost hurt, but at the same time you can heal yourself with the melodies and harmonies.

Jeff Buckley is one of those musicians musician. He is painfully under appreciated by the masses but loved and deeply influential to many musicians. A lot of great music we will never know went away with him.
Listen to his album 'Grace', it is amazing.

Always found the bridge to the ending of Vancouver breathtaking. Almost like Yes' angry little brother. I saw a working instrumental version of this in 94 in Madison WI. Literally the most humbling musical experiences of my life.

Suffice it to say that there's few JB songs about whichone can say "oh that sounds like x song by x band, which the same Bach-style arpeggios as the last however many others", or "blimey he sounds like a more high pitched histrionic version of x or y of his contemporaries". The one wasn't a copyist, it's as simple as that! 🤣

Before this video came out, I only knew Jeff Buckley as “the Hallelujah guy”, but ever since you introduced me to Vancouver, I’ve listened to his entire discography many times over. Now he is my favorite artist. Thank you, Rick, for showing me that Jeff Buckley is much, much more than just the Halleujah guy.
If only more people recognized what you have discovered.

Had the chance to see Jeff Buckley Live 3 times in Paris...Unforgettable. I'm 46 now. I remember I had the same feeling about this record when it came out, and still have it , a lot of songs seems unfinished, besides a few of them. Vancouver and Morning theft are one them.

I was lucky enough to see Jeff in 95 in a tiny venue in Portsmouth UK. Amazing talent! Gone bet never forgotten.
Love seeing Rick so enthusiastic! I recall my first exposure to Jeff Buckley. He preformed Grace on 120 Minutes back in 94/95 which I still have on VHS. It was sensory overload. I could not believe what I was seeing/hearing. Needless to say, I purchased the Grace CD the very next day.

Sure, back in 2000, I was chuckling how Matt Bellamy was totally aping Jeff Buckley's falsetto and overall guitar playing on Showbiz like Hate This And I'll Love You and Falling Down. (With a big chunk of Radiohead's The Bends). Buckley is still untouchable, he had that immaculate artistry and sensitivity in his voice and guitar playing bending music to his personal expression that Bellamy never had. The kind of musician that can sing the phone book and play a guitar rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star making it the most chilling piece of musical expression.

I remember hearing Jeff for the first time. I was rushing out of the house and was stopped dead in my tracks listening mesmerised to the incredible melody of the guitar and range of vocals. I knew I was listening to a genius then. Why do the greats die so young!?

Simply amazing. Jeff inspires me a lot to become not only a great guitar player, but a skilled singer as well. The perfect mix of alternative rock and jazz.
I know its a cover, but when he sings "Hallelujah" I can't help but stop whatever I'm doing and sit silently absolutely hypnotized by the brutal and beautiful melancholy of it.

WOW, loved Grace, but wasn't aware of this kick-ass song; got introduced to Jeff because I really enjoyed the work of his father, Tim.
More than the individual parts, the most charming part of this recording is the overall texture. Meshes so well.
Buckley was so different, had so much talent and promised so much. Was devastated when we lost him. The Grace album was supposed to be just the beginning of something stratospheric.

As for the vocals...well.....sublime.
I still vividly recall the day I heard the sad news that Jeff had drowned...
still it makes me want to cry....
I never met Jeff but I at least got to see the guys play in Melbourne
during the Hard Luck Tour at the Palais in St.KIlda on 28 th feb.....
a few tracks on Mystery White Boy were from this night and that same night was also my birthday.
I miss Jeff's amazing voice, and that guitar sound of his...
Truly unique and though he left us with such beautiful music I feel it was a fraction of what Jeff may have done had he not passed away so tragically...
As a musician myself his music was inspirational and really got into ones soul.

How can I not comment? We lost a true lyrical, vocal and musical genius. Every song just cuts right in to me. I can't listen to too many songs at one time because I get a lump in my throat and an ache in my heart and it just doesn't let up. It's a mixture of anger and sadness...utter grief. I hated the universe the day he left it 😢

I only recently started listening to Jeff Buckley. It's almost as if all these years, I've been waiting for this moment to find something truly unique, inspirational and disastrously lovely. As a lover of the soulfully unique, it's almost as if I can't bring myself to try to find others who listen to him because it's so deep I almost feel like no one would understand. The complexity is phenomenal. The abstract but gorgeous chord progressions. You think it won't fit but then it does. Idk it just truly blows my mind.
His cover of I Know it's Over by the Smiths is one of my all time favorites. Such a beautiful voice

This is beautiful, Rick. I too was hesitant to listen to this album after his death. I saw him in '94 for the first time and was blown away by his powerful voice (like his dad) and musical arrangements. Such a loss.

this is by far the best song ever written. we had a precursor of Vancouver in the live dvd he did in chicago and then when this album came out he added lyrics. i can't give enough praise to this song and jeff. thanks for this video.
This song has always given me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's incredible. I saw him open for Breeders & Guided By Voices (ridiculous lineup). I was 18 and remember thinking he was good but I was not paying much attention. Then I bought Grace a while later and realized how amazing this guy truly was. What a loss.
Honestly some of the song choices for "What makes this song great?" are a bit obvious. But this and Morning Theft are my favourite JB songs and I love hearing a breakdown like this. The bass work is especially cool.
