people forget how much of an expert guitarist jeff was. he studied purely guitar intensively for years. could riff and solo with the best
Jeff and Chris Cornell were friends and mutual admirers of each other's work! Imagine these two working together......such a loss to the world
@12 year old me was not good at picking usernames Wave Goodbye is the song about Jeff. It's so good
The two best singers of the nineties.
Drugs create and kill.
Even Layne...Layne used to sneak away from the band to watch Jeff perform.
I'd like to think they are working together somewhere in the great beyond
Jeff never played a song the same twice.
so unique performances
Bless that about him. I mourn the songs he never wrote
In Italy we have an artist like Jeff She never repeats her songs at the same way but everytime She changes the way.Her name Is ELISAA....JEFF +ELISA....my God.....goosbumbs
He was the first singer that really made me notice singing. First time I heard him it sent chills down my spine and I can honestly say he has always been my favorite. It felt like I lost a family member when he died.
Absolutely, he had some nobody else brought to the table in rock and nobody since has
@@fishstick1013 True. But every rock singer, even the not-so-good ones technically, can still teach us and treat is to something different. Adam Gontier is one of my all-time favorite singers for his naturally warm, yet unique voice, same with Corey Taylor. two guys with extremely different voices, but with extremely close vocal styles. Both like distortion, growls, and cleans mixed in.
@@zaynes5094 what's funny is that I was singing a three days Grace song the moment before I read this reply
I just love how "I didn't see you before, but I see you now." isn't even in the recording, he just sings it, and it's just effortlessly soulful.
EEEEEeeee!!!!! MY FAVORITE JEFF BUCKLEY SONG!!!!
"she is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever"... quite possibly the best line ever written
I was fortunate to see him twice, and still have the concert shirt from his "live at the Sin-e" tour
Sighs...
Please elaborate
@@augart89 what would you like me to elaborate on?
@@Kevin_Fiol where did the concerts took place? Was he truly as mesmerizing as people tend to claim?
He had so many incredible lines, and was the master of the heart-wrenching "near the end of the song" devastator verses that just demolish any chance you had of not collapsing into tears if you've found your soulmate and lost them for whatever reason. A few of the most catastrophic for me...
"This is my story for the dislocated
Who want to love but who turn to be hated
Because the lies of the spirit possessed you
Because the eyes of your lover resist you
Listen now, you keep your aim steady
As your temple turns to kiss the pistol
"
-I Woke Up in a Strange Place
"Mother dear, the world's gone cold
No one cares about love anymore
What will you say
When you've seen my face
Father do you hear me?
Do you know me?
Do you even care?
What will you say
When you've seen my face?"
-What Will You Say
"The bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memory
Of her sighs that it's over
It's over"
-Last Goodbye
"This is for all the headless acrobats
faces crushed in the circus dust
all for the law of gravity
and the price of admission"
-Moodswing Whiskey
Yeah, they're all from Mystery White Boy, which I honestly think is the definitive Buckley album, though that's not a very popular opinion. He'd had time to road test the songs he'd been tinkering with on his own, and finally with a producer on Grace, but they still felt a bit anchorless and meandering on that album. No version of any song on Mystery White Boy has that quality, and every song is razor sharp and whittled to perfection, especially the generally awkward version of Eternal Life that made it onto grace. You could tell it had some really interesting ideas, but was nowhere near being a good or complete song. It took Jeff's discovery of varying forms of music to give him the insight to apply the kind of playing and tonality to it that makes it the powerhouse, borderline metal song it is on Mystery White Boy. It makes the version on Grace sound like a joke. In fact, every track on Mystery White Boy is better than its studio album counterpart, to the point where I simply don't listen to Grace, unless I want to hear the excellent version of So Real on there.
Oh my god I'd kill and get killed just to see him for a second... Never been more jealous!!
Jeff’s death affected me more than kurdt cobains tbh. So much wasted talent. This guy could be the most naturally gifted musicians and singers I’ve ever listened to. Such a loss. Hope you are at peace brother.
Why is it a competition? They are both very dead
Casey P I must’ve missed the part where I said it was a competition. I was speaking as a musician and a gen x’r who was profoundly influenced by both artists. I was merely alluding to my personal feelings as to the tragic passing of either artist. I personally think Jeff was capable of achieving more in his life and music than Kurt. You know Kurt Being a junkie and all they tend to self destruct regularly anyway. Jeff’s passing was a tragic accident not self inflicted.
Kurdt?
Jeff was the real deal, in fact my username has been one of his songs for decades. He was a one off.
I was affected more by Kurt's death, he was such a tormented artist. Maybe because I discovered Jeff Buckley after he was already dead. I have a feeling though that Jeff's death could also have been suicide.
That's the most beautiful song ever written ♥♥♥
The most sadness song ever written
No
Pretty much could definitely be said about every song Jeff wrote 👌
"This song has a real build" Almost every Buckley song, literally. God bless him.
Your analysis is so spot on. Your musical knowledge is incredible. This is one of my favourite Jeff Buckley songs. It's such a shame he left us at such a young age.
Thank you!
The part "and I wait for you" always gives me chills. Those chords
I like how you talk about him in the present time, I wish he was still here among the living, the world lost a great voice on the 29th ofMay 1997... Great job, Beth.
His cover of Leonard Cohen's Halleleuja is amazing. R.I.P. Jeff
He knew only the cover of John Cale when he recorded "Hallelujah"...
Isaak I cannot agree more omg I love his cover so much....
He literally made the cover his own
I discovered Jeff around 1999 sadly he had already passed one of my guitar students turned up with 'Mojo pin' and asked me to teach it to her, i said ' what the fuck is this, this is crazy' i heard the album Grace and i realised i had heard something very special. He channelled that album from his soul....very rare to hear a whole record that is literally channelled spiritually...
My favorite voice. It's like an artist's paint on canvas, every single nuance is perfection. His voice is SOO original, and if you asked your favorite singer what they thought of Jeff Buckley, they would also tell you that he was either their favorite, or one of their all time favorites...his voice isn't just good, it's original and angelic beyond any other I have ever heard.
(Sorry for my bad English) I remember hearing him sing for the first time. I have never felt that way about someones voice before. I immidiatly fell in love with his voice, as I believe many have too. When I found out that he died very young I was completely shattered. A true talent lost.
Your English comes across just fine! I understand you perfectly.
Geez you really understand your music. Great perception of what's happening in a song. Please do Love,Hate, Love from Alice in Chains live
Diogo Costa love nutshell ,mate
Live from the Moore yes
pleaseeee
I can hear the jazz inspiration in those chords. I love his songs. This one is particularly nostalgic because my dad often sang and played it on guitar when I was younger. Legendary
Jeff had the gift of a golden voice. Nice presentation. " So Real " is a great vocal achievement. " I Love You , But I'm Afraid To Love You " 😎 🎸 !
Always hits me right in the feels...
"He REALLY wants her to come over." :)
His dad Tim Buckley was also an incredible singer! For those who don't know him I strongly recommend Song to the siren
Love! Such a great musician all around. I still remember randomly stumbling upon Grace in a store, getting it home and being blown away.
"Grace" is one of my favourite albums from one of my heroes 😊❤👍#ripjeff #RIPJeffBuckley
Coincidental last name? :P
I used to see it in the store, and shamefully I never brought it home. I misinterpreted the cover photo as being some commercial kind of Nick Carter record. Boy was I wrong. But I'm glad I found it recently, really gave my life at 50 some more zing.
He was just coincidentally a beautiful man.
Jeff had such an incredible voice, I started taking singing lessons because of him.
I love how excited she gets when she hears something she likes about the performance.
"Burning in the corner is the only one who dreams he had you with him.."
JB followed proto
@@iconocast how many gallons of kool-aid does a mommy gotta drink to get a voice like that. a voice like a whole white baby bruh.
His pitch, agility and power across all octaves and dynamics is jaw dropping
Ugh I love my Buckley!
I discovered him by buying a cd when I was 19. just to discover it, never heard about him. I was shocked, one of the most skilled modern musician. I still remember that day.
Jeff gets his fast vibrato from his dad, Tim Buckley :)
One of the greatest singers of all time. So pleased to see how much you appreciate him and yes, how much he wants her to come over
I so love to hear you do reviews of stuff that means something to you. You mix your technical analysis with phrases like “it gets me in the soul”, which you don’t hear other vocal analysts say. Roar on, Beth
He sang this to Rebecca. His first NYC love. Yea Jeff you are the king bro!
I remember first hearing Grace on MTV. I was blown away. For weeks, months even, I stayed tuned to MTV hoping to hear that song again. One thing I did remember were the legendary name "Jeff Buckley" and the album name "Grace". I couldn't find the album anywhere near where I live (a small town in The Netherlands). But finally I did find it. And it's still by far my favourite album ever. Later on I learned from my father that he actually saw him in Sin-é (he is a merchant marine captain). I would love to have that experience again, stumbling on something on t.v., radio, or live, that just, in an instant, changes your life forever! I still miss Jeff Buckley...
God I wish I had the priviledge to have seen him live. Many artists had their lives cut short, but I can't think of another who leaves me wanting so much more. Only 1 studio album is cruel.
One my favorite songs EVER! Every molecule of Jeff, poured into what he’s feeling. Brilliant!
Met Jeff Buckley when I was 10. First concert I ever attended. I love his music. I'd love to hear your thoughts on "So Real".
So jealous. 🤘
@@stefaniebrauer128 I try love “Last Goodbye.” Jeff’s voice, guitar, that bass, drums, etc. it rocks!
Hé was a genius, what a voice! And a so talented guitarist and composer
Every time JB comes on, I stop dead in my tracks.
I just want to say that besides his truly amazing voice and guitar his lyrics ESPECIALLY on this song are something else ❤️❤️❤️
Matt Belamy of Muse is constantly compared with Radiohead's Thom Yorke but Belamy himself says that his way of singing came from Jeff Buckley.
And once you know, you hear it.
Very true. Thom also was influenced by Jeff. During the recording of The Bends, he was frustrated with the vocals on Fake Plastic Trees and went to see Jeff. Then he was able to get the vocals right and finish the record.
Hey! Here is my reaction to Thom: ua-cam.com/video/dHvJeCdrXlg/v-deo.html
Jeff's music touches the soul it's real. A place where most people are too afraid to go.
My fave performance of this glorious song.
A work of art
You are just great. The voice is my favorite instrument and I greatly appreciate your insight into the technical aspects as well as the emotion these vocalists bring. Also, kudos to you for shining a little light on the talent of rock, alt and metal singers. I feel that oftentimes they dont get the vocal recognition they deserve. Subscribed AND one of my new favorite channels. Keep it up.
I love watching ur reaction to the notes. It shows u genuinely love Buckley and I love to see it! ❤
Great to see a younger person appreciating Jeff Buckley. This is one of my favorite songs,. I first heard it
on live att Olympia which I bought because the music store didn't have any copies of Grace. So pleased I did . I definitely shed a few tears over Jeff's death andl all the musical masterpieces he would never get to create. So rare, so unique.
Being a big fan (my wife got me into him shortly before he passed), I had to make sure I set aside the time and had some peace and quiet to watch this. Fantastic breakdown of this masterpiece. My eyes always get watery when listening to this. My son studied music in college and my daughter will likely do the same. Jeff is no stranger to them, and having you do these videos and seeing our kids education mesh with your reacts is fun. My son especially digs your Tool and AiC reacts. May have to let my daughter check out your online lessons - she just lost her vocal coach to a recent health issue.
I saw his set at the Olympia in Paris in 95. He was really amazing!!
I always idolized Jeff even as a child, he will always be someone I draw inspiration from. Also grace and last goodbye are my go too songs.
You mentioned the idea that he must have a naturally high voice. If you ever hear him in interviews, as high as his singing voice is, when you hear him talk, it's higher than you would expect because he does hit some fairly low notes.
I'm so glad you did these live Jeff Buckley songs, they are truly gems!
its great seeing someone else appreciate Jeff, and beyond Hallelujah (also great, but...its everywhere while the rest of his work also deserves attention.) ive got a few other suggestions here, even if just to give a listen:
Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother (Live A L'Olympia)
Grace (Mystery White Boy Version)
What Will You Say
Moodswing Whiskey
his covers of Dido's Lament and What Young Lovers Do, and also Corpus Christi Carol are also incredible displays of his voice.
and finally Vancouver, which is my personal favorite song of his.
Chocolate/Mojo Pin is one of my absolute favorite live tracks. I'd be really interested what she would say about Corpus Christi Carol. :)
Great choices ! His Olympia live is incredible. So sad his work is still so underrated (except hallelujah, of course)
The thing I like most about Jeff is that I can almost see and touch his voice.
Finally I see somebody reacting to Jeff Buckley!!!! :) Great, Beth!!!
This is the song I most cry to
“She’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever.” Maybe the best individual line from a song ever. RIP Jeff Buckley.
He is incredible! One of greatest of all time for sure!!
Brilliant and in depth reaction to my favourite Male artist of all time! Try mojo pin. His voice is majestic

Would be nice if you check out his Hallelujah cover. It’s so good, his rawness and emotion translated so well in that one. 😊
Still get the chills after almost 20 years
Ofc the album version is epic as well
You should do Cedric Bixler-Zavala from The Mars Volta.
zensei999 yessss!
YEEEEEEESSSS!!
Excellent analysis of a such unpredictable and soulfull voice.
He along with Chris Cornell are my guide-line and true ispiration when i sing.
I can see how He gets you during his performance, and i can instantly relate.
Good work.
I never heard of Jeff Buckley until a friend played Hallelujah from Grace. The world stopped, and I listened to it over 100 times in a row...I have never been affected by someone's voice in that way before, or since. Jeff was otherworldly.
Oooh, Beth. Thank you! My favourite Buckley song. ❤
Fell in love with him cause of This song. ❤listened to it and omg who is he??!! Found Jeff and discovered he had already gone...
THANK YOU SO MUCH for react to Jeff. Please do more of him. I recommend you this version of Mojo Pin "Mojo Pin Live at Glastonbury 1995"
Thank you Beth... This was the first video of yours I watched, and I am impressed/greatful! Just what I needed!
I would love to hear your opinion of Gregg Alexander, "New Radicals".
YAAAS! sorry i requested for this sing in your Grace reaction but thank you UA-cam for recommending this one!
💜💜💜 SALAMAT BETH
You must get some Chris Cornell on here. Either him with Soundgarden or his acoustic stuff. Does a lot of great covers too. Great channel btw!
he really wants her to come over, biggest understatement ever?
Wow! Jeff Buckley! I absolutely love him, his voice and his performances convey a true intensity of feelings. I was thinking of recommending him for your analysis. Love your videos Beth, good work, keep it up! :)
Oh, and if I can make two suggestions: I would love to hear your thoughts on Anneke van Giersbergen (don't know which song to recommend). I love her voice, her tone. I loved her work with The Gathering (she was the former vocalist), but she also has amazing stuff solo and in collaborations with some other of my favorite musicians: on the Devin Townsend Project and also some duets with Anathema. And this band, Anathema, would be my second recommendation. Don't know which song to recommend too, sorry. :)
Also, anything by the singer Agnes Obel would be great! Maybe, Familiar or The Curse.
Hey! Here is my reaction to Agnes Obel: ua-cam.com/video/w2zPVi-hzh8/v-deo.html
Beth's analysis of the performance is brilliant, really like this gal.
Good reaction to the song and video from Jeff Buckley .
Gone but never forgotten ❤he was a beautiful artist
I’ve been waiting for this omg ❤️
Jeff Buckley was a god amongst men. Such a beautiful voice that has so much emotion in it, it reaches into your heart and you feel what he feels. If you haven't yet, last goodbye by Jeff was on everything from movies to TV shows in the 90's. I'd rather enjoy your break down of that song. And, should you have done it already, let me know so I can watch it. Thank you for you being you!
I was watching old episodes of House and of course his cover of Hallelujah was at the end of one.
Jeff's cover of the song Satisfied Mind is one of my favorite songs of all-time. This one is pretty amazing, too.
Wow Jeff was so amazing!!!!
A singer I've never seen dissected on one of these channels is Jon Andersson from Yes. I'd recommend Yours Is No Disgrace or I've seen All Good People
If she still didn't come over after hearing this, then she has astonishing self control! And a heart of stone
You have definitely broken my heart, with this brilliant video, thnx
Jeff
Yes! You have awesome taste 👍
Layne was a also a beast.
His voice is utterly amazing and it often overshadowed his musicianship, but he was also a brilliant guitarist.
❤️ "Jeff Buckley - Grace (BBC Late Show)" is also a nice performance, if you haven't seen it already. Make sure to skip at 0:50. That's where the song starts. Cheers Beth! 🙂
His live at the BBC performance is excellent. But she has to read the story behind it, to understand the added... aggressive... Emotion in his voice 😁
Indeed. There is no need to skip over the introduction.
I miss him so much... 💔💔
Which sounds so stupid because I was born years after he died but yet I still miss him 💔😔
Great video and brilliant analysis, Beth! I'd love to see you do a Martin Tielli song, like Rheostatics performing "Stolen Car" at Vancouver's CBC studios in 1999, or Midwinter Night's Dream from Double Live (no video, unfortunately). Like Jeff Buckley, he is also lead guitarist. After you do Mike Patton, obviously.
Lovely analysis. I'm covering and performing his version of Lilac Wine in my next set. Very tricky singer to emulate so I try and do it my way instead. He is such an enigma and would have been amazing to see what he produced had his life not been cut short
please react to Jeff Buckley mojo pin next!
Then maybe give 'Dad' a listen?
Rock genre had so many iconic musicians over the decades. It becomes hard to explain to someone who isn't familiar with it. So i simply try to use some association that might remember some figures of our world landscapes. For example, Bowie is probably rock' n roll "Picasso" as Nile Rodgers well stated. I'd say without a doubt Jeff is Rock n roll's "Romeo" with a "David's voice", never heard anyone sing like him before or after!!
Love your jumper! Looks aran and home knitted. Love your reactions
The writing is about how he feels alone at a close family member funeral and he misses his support. Because when you are low people raise you up or they tear you down.
EVERYTHING about Jeff Buckley breaks my heart
My favorite song of all time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this one.
Uma BR.
Tb, minha música favorita
Great reaction to a great song, it takes me to a sad place in my life, but love it.
Please react to Mojo Pin live in Glastonbury 1995, probably his best performance of that song!!!
Such a crazy performance. I could only imagine what it would be like to be in that crowd stunned.
Best version Yess
THe Chicago version is unbelievably, much better
Jeff Buckley- mojo pin live in Glastonbury is one you should do. So much going on
Finally! Someone finally did this song! Ty!
Another great video love it keep em coming. X
Greatest singer / guitarist combo of all time. Aiming from a technical standpoint cannot be duplicated , most underrated guitar player in history of music
Jeff is like Chris Cornell, George Harrison.....many other elite with feel... and this man is still almost as forgotten as Shannon Hoon. Jeff died swimming in the Mississippi near Memphis. What a tragic story. Long live Jeff Buckley. May his music go on.
Pleaseeeee.... TYPE O NEGATIVE - BLACK No 1. At Bizarre festival.
Peter Steele's voice deserves recognicement. Impossibly low with 0 effort and also can get quite high.
9 minutes of absolute darkness.
Yes!!! 👏
I've been listening to Bloody KIsses and October Rust over and over these past few days.
La mejor reacción sobre Jeff que he visto. 😍
De verdad que lo entendió.
