      @@FairyLotusUnicorn footage ages. It called generation loss. As it’s printed in to more and more dvds or shown on more and more channels, the original pixels will break down and the quality will go down. I may have already been somewhat pink by the time in made it to the usa on Cartoon Network. It didn’t air in the usa until the show had already completely ended in Japan. It was already 5 years old. anyone who has only been able to see it online through streaming services, including crunchy roll, certainly has only seen its pink tinted coloring. Networks only own pink tinted versions now because of aging. That’s the whole reason this fan has to go in and change the colors, a copy of the original quality can no longer exist.If pictures and videos are saved then shared and saved then shared for long enough the original quality will not exist anymore. It’s why a lot of old media looks red tinted or brown tinted, especially cartoons. It’s the colors breaking down leaving those tones to stand out. It really is a just a sign of aging. There are generations who may have never seen the original colors. There’s nothing wrong with it, it just gave younger fans a shock lol. I don’t remember the original colors I was born the year it came to the usa and originally watched it when I was around three 😂 I have no memory of watching it that young and no memories came back when I rewatched it, but my mom claims I did. Of course you can see it in old merch and some current still, but the creators and business end seem to like the pink tint considering some products feature the pink tint. It’s sailor moon a little pink kinda makes since lol😅

      Nobody’s sayin we can’t prefer one over the other out of being used to it.
      What IS weird is that mfs are using a preference as the justification that a preservationist work is “ruining” Sailor moon lmfao
      Most of the people weren’t even complaining too hard anyways. Just a dismissive “I like the og better” which I understand on paper but is probably shitty to here in mass while working on a restoration project for free with a small team.
      I like the washed out poorly scanned old Pokémon art even if it wasn’t intentional.
      While it was reality breaking to see the intended art not be so washed out, I still think it’s cool, has value and 100% is something more that HAS to be done. and I’m honored to live in a time to get to see an alternate take over a piece of art that I liked.
      I still like the poorly scanned versions more, but I won’t lie and say there’s no value in the proper scans due to my own personal biases

      @@theradionicrevival8068 What a great comparison! I, too, prefer the poor quality/scanned, improperly colored Pokemon! I don't dislike the intended colors either, by any means. I just lean toward preferring the ones I grew up with in my childhood.
      As far as Sailor Moon, I also think the pink hue is nice, personally, even if that isn't the OG and wasn't intended.
      In general, I've always been a fan of what Sailor Moon does with color, the unintended pink hue kind of further saturates that and makes it look even more vibrant and ethereal or dream-like, I think at times it also helps upbeat and "poppy" scenes.. well, pop, more.
      But, again, I don't think the original and intended looks bad, either. Absolutely not. It's just a slight preference for one over the other. One that's entirely subjective and personal. This just happens to be mine.
      That being said, in every instance mentioned here, regardless of what "version" it is, the art and media itself is fucking fantastic and top tier stuff.
      I wouldn't sneeze at or complain regardless of what coloration I got. I'm just a fan of the series and franchise as a whole. I think that's sort of most important and heavily outweighs any minor distinctions or ever so slight preference for color or tone.
      Apologies for lengthiness.
      To anyone still reading this, hey, I hope you're having a rad and awesome day, cool random internet stranger dude bro person(s).
      I wish you the best of luck in any and all of your pursuits, passions and endeavors. And may the RNG gods smile upon you.

      @@theradionicrevival8068You’re just dismissing it as personal preference to imply there’s no good reason why people prefer the aged look and even somehow making it some ethical dilemma(?). If you care about preserving the actual colors that much then don’t worry, there’s such thing as color codes to objectively archive and recreate. What you CAN’T recreate over and over are those unintentional misprints, happy mistakes, and the uniqueness of an aging in a very specific way for a very specific show.

    I think the pink tones caught-on due to the pirate anime culture of the '90s. For the uninitiated, the internet was around, yes, but large file-hosting servers weren't exactly a thing outside of universities and large organizations, and accessing media files over dial-up was a fool's errand. VHS bootleg (copies of copies of copies...) was _the_ primary distribution method of anime for years. You had to go on forums/chat boards and request a desired show. The person filling your request was on the hook for shipping, so you would typically trade/swap desirable shows to balance the other's cost; it was kind of on the 'Honor System.' When you received your parcel, you had what was very likely a dozen copies or more removed from "original," with zero guarantee towards any semblance of 'quality.'
    As soon as online digital repositories began popping up, a lot of their material was being sourced from... you guessed it; those _same_ bootleg VHSs. Thus, analog deterioration transferred over into the digital realm well into the '00s. Blurry, pinkish, artifacted video with buzzy audio was the norm. Even with multiple DVD releases and remasters _eventually_ working their way into the pirate realm, digital storage tended to run a premium, and it was quite common that the most shared versions of bootleg anime were those that demanded the least amount disk space; thus, those same VHS copies persisted as small files that could be quickly distributed, occupying minimal data footprint.
    In terms of 'prowess,' The original run of classic Toonami shows was, what, a year or two? Some of the more popular shows might get additional re-runs, or subsequent syndication, but, for the most part, you watched a particular anime once, _maybe_ twice all the way through on TV. If you wanted to watch it any more than that, you could pony up for those dope VHS boxed sets (which were *not* cheap), or you... acquired it... elsewhere. The latter acquisition was generally how _most_ people watched anime multiple times over. As such, that medium became the _defining_ version _for_ _them_ .
    Long story short, it's not so much that people are "misremembering" an artstyle; they just happened to have viewed and fondly remembered an alternative version of that same art.

      The Mona Lisa IS REMARKABLE in its technique.
      During the rise of the Renaissance and before the Renaissance, art had mostly been flat look at Early Christian art Byzantine art and Romanesque art for example. Then came the Renaissance a period in which Science, technology, and art had innovation after innovation (though it was a gradual thing and most didn’t even know they were in the Renaissance).
      TLDR:
      Art had innovations in the use of technique and subject matter, before the Renaissance art was in Europe for religious purposes this of course changed. Now going back to a technique which I eluded the Mona Lisa was praised due to its fantastic use of blending(fresco) and its scarily accurate human proportions.

So if people want a future proof version, it should "not keep this way", otherwhise the future we don't have it at all. Why? It will get worse and worse with the original material. Why does many online don't get that? You are a fan of sailormoon? Help those guys. You are a fan with the pink "filter", use pink glasses und watch then the restorated version.

    • @shiftfire4511

      I mean, no? It really doesn't...
      The problem is that these altered colors, such as the pink tint of sailor moon, are usually the result of transitional issues in converting them to digital formats. And these issues can span a *lot* of different sources, from using poorly aged or low quality originals to issues in the transition method used, a lack of refinement, or to simply not having accounted for how TVs have changed a lot in the last twenty years.
      The only reason so many classic animations from the 70s through the late 90s have altered colors is because a *lot* of them underwent these processes, where something went wrong or wasn't accounted for along the way.
      If you had watched most of these as they were airing, or on VHS or any number of other ways that aren't in the modern digital formats, you'll notice a drastic difference.

      @@shiftfire4511 True, though sometimes it's that low quality that actually makes it more charming and benefits more than an HD remaster.
      In Sailor Moon's case, the pink filtration actually benefits the charm and overall appeal. Not saying that the HD restoration of Sailor Moon is awful or terrible. I actually like how this will give people the option to watch it the way it originally was. It's just that pink hue removed kinda takes that charm from SM.

    • @Strawberrihead
      @Strawberrihead 21 день тому

      @@ZackarySchejbalCODBO2RGM2but it really doesn't. The charm is the show, the character development, the storyline. The nostalgic 90's hand drawn animation. The pink just adds a rose tinted lense that, sure, is esthetically pleasing because Sailor Moon is cute and girly, but to say removing the pink hue takes away from the charm is subjective at best. I guess to those of us that watched and remember only the original colors just aren't seeing the value add or how the charm of such an iconic show is lost without a conversion side effect. To each their own, as you stated. It's just interesting to see these perspectives.

    Edit: mystery solved! As CB below says, it's very likely due to how VHS's had more subdued colors for 90s kids and older, so the subdued pinks of the color grading may evoke more nostalgia in us than the bright colors of the original due to that! And that totally tracks, because I didn't grow up on Sailor Moon (rather, I watched it on Hulu as an adult). And yet I still see the pink as more nostalgic even so. However, I did have VHS's in my early childhood, which explains it! I think this is a very cool and interesting psychological phenomenon, so I'm glad for all the answers but especially CB's one that solved it!
    OG
    I think what it is is that the pink not only adds a lil extra girly charm that tracks pretty well with the show, but it also sort of gives a bit of a 90s VHS type feel, if that makes sense. It feels oddly vintage for some reason. More nostalgic somehow, even if it's not the actual original. It'd be interesting to hear from someone who knows about color theory as to why they think the pink does this.

    • @eldritchomen
      @eldritchomen 8 місяців тому +50

      Pink fits the girly and cute tone of the show, so some people think it looks better and more ""aesthetic"". It was basically luck that toei used a pink fading shitty tape to record it on wwwww
      If it was on a tape that degraded to green like DBZ, it's likely that more people would like the restored version better bc it doesn't fit the aesthetics or the original colors used in the show
      So like TLDR: toei accidentally color graded their anime

    • @SpecialInterestShow
      @SpecialInterestShow 8 місяців тому +10

      @@eldritchomen ah, yes, I figured that much. I also agree that it does add a nice extra charm to the show.
      What I was asking was more like... Why does the pink make us feel this way? Like, psychologically. I understand how the pinkness plays along wonderfully with the girly vibes of the show. What I'm looking to understand psychologically, however, is why the pink makes us think "nostalgia", but especially the "vintage" part. Why does the pink make this feel vintage, when the original is older yet does not?
      Why is it that this coloring pattern feels vintage to us?

    • @tyrenesaur

    • @ThatOneLadyOverHere
      @ThatOneLadyOverHere 8 місяців тому +8

      The warmth of pink is probably why people like it. If you look up color psychology you'll find stuff. Mostly it'll just give you a good idea, but there are a lot of contradicting things based on the context of the color and it varies across cultures. But it's a good basis to help you kind of interpret what a color means especially in conjunction with other colors and the specific shade of each that you are working with. Ultimately it's very subjective and you have to go off of your own feelings. In this case, because it is a very warm, soft pink, it probably has something to do with the coziness, creativity, admiration, love, and girliness.
      It does also darken the colors which maybe people like that, personally I do think the old colors look better, though the pink background is nice.

    I imagine people may like it more because it’s more visually appealing from the harmony that the pink undertone gives the colour palette. Much like how in traditional painting artists might mix one primary color with all of their palette so all of the colours flow better, or how digital artists will overlay their colors with one flat color overtop with a blending mode applied for the same reason. It just makes things look softer and less harsh, and I think that’s what makes the pink a lot more appealing.

    The pink messes up the scenes that are largely the opposite colours. Like blue and green.
    So the pink actually makes Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter's solo scenes (i.e. transformations, attacks) look WORSE than the intended original colour.
    The pink also basically messses up the colours for the Outer Senshi's scenes (Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto, Sailor Saturn) because all their colour schemes directly clashes with the pink.
    For example, Sailor Pluto's uniform ends up looking brown (due to the pink) instead of the intended dark green. Because dark green + pink tint = brown.

      You say that like they're dead and like artists don't like different versions of their art...?
      As an artist, I like putting filters over my art.
      _It's fun._
      They may like one more than the other individually, they can also just like both.
      This was a corporate project after all, this isn't exactly something that was purely theirs.
      I don't think people ACTUALLY know how paid and professional animation businesses work...

      What's weird is that the DVD screenshots he shows as an example of the DVDs having the original colors actually show nicer, more cohesive colors than the new reworked shots he showed. In one, the hair goes from almost neon yellow in the rework to a much more muted (and redder toned) yellow in the DVDs. It looks much nicer than the rework.
      So it kind of undermines his, "this is how it's meant to be" argument, if the DVDs had no color degradation, as he said.

    I have no history of watching it. But I do like the pink toned version better because it seems the hair shadows in the original are just dark yellow, which looks like swamp green. It looks like an old microsoft paint palette. Much more in favour of the seemingly more refined pink tinted ones.

    Those tweets weren’t saying it was evil and wrong. They literally just said “I like the pink better” the only one that was actually angry was the “soul, soulless” one, and that was just one tweet out of the many others.

    I grew up watching Sailor Moon long back before we had a DvD and we were still watching movies on VHS in the early to late 90's, but I can confirm Sailor Moon always looked the "original" way.
    But the pink hue does give it a cute vibe.

    It makes me think of how color in Akira animation cels are actually a lot darker and more muted to compensate for how they'd be photographed and composited with the best technologies they had at the time. My roommate has a Sailor Moon animation cel she bought in Japan decades ago. The colors are very different in-person compared to how they look in the show itself. Part of this might also be because the paint used in animation isn't common acrylics or watercolors. It had to be specially formulated to work for animation; to be easy to clean off, but endure the heat, chemical treatments and handling of getting it ready to layer and photograph, able to be opaque but applied as thin as possible, etc. All these different properties of the paint probably affect how it can be photographed and how it ages.
    Funny how old anime isn't as much if a candy-colored eyeburn as it's stereotyped to be in a way because of this.
