  • Right before Christmas, this 1979 Buick Regal hit the local Pick n Pull Junkyard. While I was hoping that this A body which I as well as most call a gbody, had an aluminum deck lid, it was not to be. The aluminum deck lid came on some 78-79 Regal and Monte Carlo models. And they are interchangeable. I already have a couple of them so no biggie. It did however have a very rare factory part that only about 5% of 78-79 Buick regal and Pontiac Grand Prix models have. I've never found one on a olds cutlass. That would be an aluminum radiator core support. I've only found three including this one in all the years that I've been looking in the junkyard. As for the rest of the car, it had been off the road for over two decades from the year 2000. But even though it had a bunch of small dents it was rust free and I believe it most definitely could have been saved. The Buick rally chrome wheels were still pretty shiny. The interior had seen better days but it was all there. The door panel were super clean though and it had a tilt steering column. The dash was slightly warped but not cracked like so many of them. Under the hood was the 4.9 Pontiac 301 which have been overhauled according to the receipts in the glovebox. I always look under the car to see it I find the rare 8.5 gbody rear end but it was the common 7.5" 10 bolt. I've only ever found one 8.5" in a gbody at the junkyard but I will always continue to look for another one. Hopey this one is stripped pretty good before it ultimately meets the crusher.

Whoa Nelley, 301 and it's done.
Rare today, but not that rare back in the day. Many Buicks had Pontiac V8s. My uncle had a 1980 Buick LeSabre with a 301 V8 four barrel, that he got in 1982 and kept until 1986 when he sold it for a 1983 Park Avenue that my dad got as a trade in for a Cadillac at the dealership he worked at during that time. We always knew it was the same car around town because the new owners put "Virginia is for Lovers" bumper stickers on the back. It was sold through DiFeo Buick in Jersey City, NJ and was a company car of my father's. Prior to 1982, it came home to our house a few times if we needed to use it. It's OK, you can use "A" and "G" body interchangeably, as there were G body RWD cars prior to 1982, but by 1982, they were G body in the GM nomenclature. We get what you're saying. LOL. There are still automotive businesses at that same address on the receipt.
We got the VIN, we win: 4 for Buick, M for Regal Limited, 47 for two door, W for 301 V8 with four barrel, aka RPO code "L37", Pontiac produced, 9 for 1979 model year, Z for Fremont, CA assembly (aka "Freaky Fremont"), and the rest is the production sequence. The Fremont, CA plant was among the worst in the GM system at the time, rife with labor problems and drug and alcohol abuse. When there were not enough people to start the line on a Monday or Friday, GM management would hire people on the spot from the bar across the street from the plant. One worker left 300 front ends loose and when called into the foreman's office, he admitted that he did it to get back at the foreman for writing him up previously for drinking on the job. The Fremont plant operated from 1963 to 1982 as a GM plant, closing on March 1, 1982. In 1984, it became a joint venture plant with Toyota under New United Motor Manufacturing, an arrangement that lasted until 2010. Today, Teslas are assembled there. Fremont, Van Nuys (closed in 1992) and Southgate (closed in 1982) were the "Terrible Three" in the GM system, the worst of the worst.
We got the tag, we can brag: 79 for 1979 model year, 4AJ47 for Buick Regal two door, Z for Fremont, CA assembly, 62D for Camel Tan/Doeskin cloth interior trim, AG1 for front split style 60/40 seat, 61L for Medium Beige lower exterior paint, 61T for Medium Beige vinyl top, 10C for the third week of October 1978 production. The color in the trunk appears to be original, the door is likely from another car, with that car possibly being code 63 Dark Gold exterior paint.
You'd want the 265 or 301 Pontiac V8s in this year as the other engine choices weren't so hot. Some Regals could be had with a Chevrolet small block, but those were oil burners and cam eaters in the late 1970s. Nothing that can't be dealt with, but not as smooth as a Pontiac V8. The 301 was an economy engine and the "Rodney Dangerfield" of the Pontiac world because people make it something it is not. If you drove them like you should and maintained them, several hundred thousand miles are not out of the question. The transmissions on these were often the THM200/THM250 variety for fuel economy which was a sore spot as they failed easily. There are a lot of good brackets and hardware under the hood, and yes, being a Pontiac owner, I'd pick them clean as many interchange with other Pontiacs in given years. I know you look for those aluminum parts, LOL.
Whoa Nelley, Poncho needs a new honcho. That's it, time to quit. 301 and it had a good run. RPO code "L37" going to Heaven. 1979 used to be fine. Freaky Fremont built by many a drunk, with a lot of junk in the trunk. Paint code 61 and it's done. Benny likes aluminum parts to save weight, and that's just great. Terrible Three and it's over for thee. Regal soon to soar like a Freebird eagle. 4.9 and outta time. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone in the land, and always lend a helpin' hand. Going to be flat and that's that. Going to get squished and many here, Benny for sure, and because it's Poncho powered, yes, the Google Man is also surely going to be very, very, very, very pissed.

My first new car was a 79 Regal, silver with the silver landau top and red bucket seat and console interior. It also had the 4.9 liter engine. I babied that car for 4 years and then after a night of drinking I totaled her with 18k on the odometer. I special ordered it. That Regal brings me back. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

My Dad had one this year had the V6 engine but was black with a black cherryish leather interior same wheels. He got it in 1985 the year he got married. Then the following year when they had me they needed a 4 car that was easier to get in and out of that handled better cause the Regal was awful in winter weather. They didn't get another car till 88 when my brother was born. The funny thing is they got an 85 Renault Alliance which my Dad laughs at now he had that till 1990 and traded that for his grey 86 Chevy Celebrity.

A friend in high school had old 79 or 80 regal limited like this with these rims and pillowed seats with two gold and tan paint , it had a blown v6 so the mechanic pulled and swapped a 307 olds and the th200r4 from a t-boned cutlass and with the regals stock V6 rear gear it wasn't a race car but it transformed over night and was a great college cruiser for long trips on I 95 and the overdrive got 20+ mpg and with the limited interior, it felt like a cadillac inside and it had limited slip for snow[ but he added weight and sand bags]. Buddy put another rebuilt transmission in it 4 years later and even amaco said I would've fixed it too before getting another car and it died at 20 years old [200K miles]right before college graduation and what was gonna be Woodstock 99 trip. With heat on you could easily fall asleep in it driving at night with those seats and ttype steering wheel from a rivera, electra or grand national bolted in and made this car a driver's dream.

301 (Pontiac) V8, not 304. Better off with a Pontiac V8 in that. Nothing wrong with an Oldsmobile 403, but it's a smog engine and not a real performer and never belongs in a Pontiac, although many were optioned that way back in the day.

1979 Buick Regal... My first car. Went through 2 engines and rebuilt one of them to be, (what I thought at the time) to be a N/A monster 6cyl 3.8l. also went through three TH350 transmissions in that car. Was powder blue with powder blue pillow top velour interior and a powder blue vinyl top. It was my grandma's car. Literally, my grandma was the first owner... Bought it new I'm 1979 before moving back down to southern Illinois. So many teenaged adventures were had in that car. They're becoming more and more difficult to find clean these days. Shame though... They're nice looking cars. Might pick up another one if I could find a clean one. And then, now being older and wiser... Make it into something I woulda drooled over being 16 yrs old. Also, don't know if anyone noticed... But, the car in this video also has one taillight from a 1980 and the other is from 1979. I had to do similar repairs to mine when I owned it. Had to put a '78 lens on my '79 and grabbed the driver side sport mirrors too due to an asshat with a bat. Lucky for me, the paint was pretty close on the mirror so I just ran it... And the '78 lens is closer to the '79 is than the '80.

Although if memory serves me correctly, I think you had to have at least the sport coupe package. Which had sport mirrors, center console/floor shifter and no vinyl top option. A neighbor across the street had a sport coupe one of these '79s and his had a bulge hood with a 301 Pontiac engine. I always wondered what stopped people from swapping in the hotter turbo 4.9l out of a T/A into those cars with the bulge hoods... I think that woulda been an excellent option for these cars from the factory.

No real rhyme or reason that I can think of as to what cars got the aluminum radiator core support other than I've only seen them on the 78/79 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix. And that's only in a few. Most of the time they are steel even on those models. Supposedly only about 5%got it

I really like the GM A/G Body cars of this era. Actually I'm a big fan of 70s GMs and it's fun to decide which of the GM models to pick out to be my favorite of each platform and generation. As far as this particular one, I've had a difficult time deciding which one I like the best of the Regal/Cutlass/Grand Prix/Monte Carlo... It's pretty much a toss up between the Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo, Regal would be my third favorite and the Cutlass of this era my least.

Nope. There were some G bodies prior to 1982, but by 1982, the "A" body (rear wheel drive) became the G body as a RWD. There was still an A body in 1982, but it was front wheel drive. The prior to 1982 "G" body cars were often the luxury models, but you've got a few of them mixed up.

@@dowen1511 Nope. The tags and data make the difference. That's where a lot of people go wrong. They skip the research and think that they have something that they do not. Many yards get them wrong as they go by the paperwork submitted to them which isn't always right. You'd be wrong on this car being a "G" body as the trim tag reads "4AJ47" which is Buick (4) Regal (AJ) two door (47).
