- I picked up this 1986 olds cutlass supreme not running and sitting for 5 years, the purchase price was $900 and after all repairs of $480 not including labor for a grand total of $1380. it still needs tires and vinyl repaired but the rest of it looks to have come out very well.
Hey Mustie, old GM mechanic here.. On all GM products that use the HEI Ignition system, the rotor plays a big part in how fast it will start up.Most times when you think its weak on starting because of fuel or carb, its most likely the rotor. Change that nasty rotor even though you cant see burn through and it will start really fast and it will be easier on your battery. I kept all my chevys fresh with the distributor cap, the carbon rod under the coil with the spring on it AND a fresh rotor for perfect starts everytime. Take it from a guy that knows GM like blind folded!! change the rotor. the carbon rod under the cap that rides on the top of the rotor looks fine.. the caps on GM HEI lasts for years ...hope that helps brother
My 86 Camaro had a similar engine too. HEI was something I always paid attention too. Mine was all black. My sister called it the Knightrider car even though that was a Pontiac Trans Am. Fun car, though quality was suspect.

Most folks would replace plug wires and be done. And they might not even look at the old set.

One MAJOR thing to replace at this age-
This uses a temperature controlled "Thermostatic" air cleaner unit.
The bimetal temp sensor is in the air cleaner housing; it controls a vacuum source, that actuates a temperature door, that draws air from the heat stove (shroud around exhaust manifold) when the outside air temp is low. As the engine warms, the diverter door opens to fresh air. When the temp control unit dies, it constantly draws hot air, and the engine will ping it's brains out under acceleration or under load.
That finicky nonsense in the air cleaner is only for reducing emissions and time while warming up -- the electric choke on the carb will take care of cold weather starting and idling. If you don't care about emissions on a 30 year old vehicle (or don't need to pass a concours inspection) cap the vacuum line and disconnect the heat risers as none of it is needed. I disconnected all of it on my 85 Mustang GT.
@@johnb5982 Same shit on a W126 mercedes. smog pump that goes out and whines but doesn't matter once the engine reaches operating temperature cause the clutch kicks in,,or out..
funny thing is, out of all the old junk I had with them, I never had to replace one. now I did change a few on other folks cars lol
@@johnb5982 in the northern/cold climates without the exhaust manifold heat riser setup, the carburetor and intake can quickly ice up when the engine is cold and you won't get very far, even idling in very cold temps can ice them up fast, even if it doesn't forget trying to drive before warming it up for an extended period.
been there done that when the hole wore open and let pin vibrate out one end, dropping the flap which stayed open, the carburetor iced up in about 1/8th mile and quit running. bad enough it locked the throttle shaft and blades solid

Ahh the old 70s through 80s GM road sofas. My father had these as company cars, usually Chevys. Floaty ride, that typical for the time thin steering wheel with full power steering, and handling was pretty vague.. But for highway road trips, you'd be challenged to find a nicer cruiser. My very first car was a '78 Impala sedan.. in that sort of metallic pine green color with green interior. Pretty close to base. Dad always got the heavy duty rear-end and air conditioning. Drove it for some years, lots of fond memories of that car.
IMHO this style Cutlass is the best looking of the bunch. Timeless styling. Man if I had the means I'd love to find a nice unmolested one of these to have as a weekend cruiser.
Oh, and the off-road drive reminded me of camping trips with Dad. That car looks like it rode just like ours did as we'd go into the woods looking for a spot to pitch the tent.
It's only partly about the car. The best part is the memories, and these videos brought some fond ones back. Thank you!

I had a ‘79 Impala. One year my siblings and I went Christmas tree shopping and rode 3 abreast in the giant front bench seat. We had no problem fitting the 7’ tree in the trunk and closing the lid.
I had an '80 Park Avenue... it was like having two full sized sofas sailing down the road like the USS Nimitz in high seas but it had the best turning radius of any car I have ever owned.

Think I mentioned this before, but one of my best friends in High School (who died) had this exact same car, except in green... brings back so many memories. What I wouldn't give to pick this one up... between the sentimental value and memories from the early 90's, combined with the modern value of having been wrenched on by Mustie1... yeah.
At any rate, I know it's not your normal thing, and it's not worth a shit to most people, but I personally appreciate you putting in the work to keep this one on the road a bit longer. Thank you, Sir.

Mustie, you need to get rid of that homemade exhaust someone put on that car with 90 degree bends behind the wheels. GM A bodies had a more gradual tilt out the sides porting out under the middle rear of the quarter panels. That looks like Nova exhausts on that Cutlass. Love the fact it's a true Oldsmobile all around. It's an Old's 307 V8! (Oil filler in the middle front). Not as much horse power as a chevy 305, but close! Very smooth and nice Olds sound!

My cousin rebuilt an '85 V6 for his step dad. I loved that car & the way it drives.
I absolutely love the G body Cutlass. I had a '83 231 v6. I put a '87 nose on it and changed all my rear lights to 87 as well. I would get so many compliments on that car. When stopped at a light, you couldn't even feel or hear it running. I worked for NAPA at the time so she was purring like a kitten. Wish I still had it.
To check for plug lead shorts to ground, do it at night or turn off the lights. The sparks will light up the engine bay like a Christmas tree.
Spray bottle of water on spray mist mode in the dark. Arc easy to locate.

My daddy had a Buick identical to this one, had perfect paint job and no dents, cracks or tears anywhere inside or out. We were not allowed to eat in car or put our feet on back of seat. Lol.. that's why it stayed immaculate. If I ever get the money I'll try and get him the car he used to date my mom with, she is no longer with us but dad could relive some great memories. ❤️
What a nice car. The off road section reminded me of my youth. I lived in rural NC. Many deeply rutted dirt roads. I would always see regular American sedans parked in front of houses along those roads. No SUV or 4wd. Required back in the 70’s to go off road!

The Olds Cutlass was the best selling car in America for a number of years when I was much, much younger. My brother-in-law drove one just like yours--silver with the pimp red interior and half vinyl top. Nice ride, not awful handling for an American car of the era, and it had style that aged quite well over the years. They were once ubiquitous on the American road; now a rarity and throw-back to a much different time.
I own and drive an 84 Monte Carlo SS. I replaced the turbo 350 with a 200-4R. The car can now cruise at 70 and the engine is turning 2100 RPM. This car is a pleasure to drive now. It has a stock 305 which is not even close to being a performance engine, but it is a very smooth, and reliable engine. Ford, Mopar, and GM built cars in the 70's, and 80's under silly government regulations, they weren't perfect, but in their day they were decent cars. I love all of those old cars, I hope that they never go away...Great job Mustie.

Man I love that car! One of my favorite cars I had was a metallic silver 86 Cutlass hardtop. The guy I bought it from put a 454 from a Chevelle that the entire back was pretty much knocked off with a cement truck. Even with perfect maintenance the engine ended up locking up for some reason and I couldn't afford to fix it at that time, so I let it go. I've always wanted another one.
I love it when you go for the test rides. I live in the midwest, but I have family in Massachusetts. Your roads look just like the ones we would drive when out there. Brings back good memories.

My folks had one of these (not the Brougham) and it was copper colored. Thumbs up just for making me remember the great road trips of the 80's. Also, nice job!
One thing to take into account: An A'hole with a pencil. One pencil line, and your engine has trouble with spark. The old timers know what I'm talking about. I did that to a neighbor once as a kid. Also, never tell kids about these things...
I learned a little trick from my neighbor mechanic last year I'd like to share with you Mustie1. Take a screwdriver or awl and punch a hole in the bottom of the oil filter when you're draining the oil. It makes it far cleaner and easier to remove the filter. Dang young'uns. Been doing like you did for 50 years and now they show me how to do it right.

Dear Mustie 1 you can also put a flashlight on the oil drip on floor to shine up on the spot the same when you hang up a lamp over your tables . And by the way next time you need to remove an old bar handle you can blow air in to it insted of cutting it . I’m really enjoying this series. I just happened to buy an 88 cutlass supreme Brougham a few days after your first video on this car. I have a nice picture from Sunday of the speedometer turning 77,777.7 miles at 77mph. By the way, the low power issue may be because of the cam they used in the cars from 86 to 88. It had almost zero higher rpm power but lots of low end torque. And they pretty much wore out and needed replacing between 70 & 80k miles
In mine When I get on the gas at highway speed the car can barely get out of its own way. And it was well tuned up by the previous owner who is a mechanic.

I remember this car when I was a teenager. We had the 1985 V8 version of it in grey. Not sure if it came in other engine sizes. We sent it to the dump but I kept the owner's manual and some of the center hub wheel covers (we had the chrome wheels similar to the video). Ours had the better gage cluster with the tachometer. The car was good in the summer but winter driving was really bad as it is a rear wheel drive car. I believe also the rear wheel drum brake cylinders and the back plates where they bolt onto had a recall as they will start to eventually fail. It gave me a great brake failure but I managed to drive it to my home driveway somehow without crashing (a miracle). Towed it to a garage and paid full price to fix it as I didn't know there was an official recall on the brakes until much later.

They have a thumper cam that just fits without having to change anything on the top half that makes those 307s sound so good, those g bodys are the cars I grew up working on.....

@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 that is definitely not true for all of the Thumpr cams. It depends on which one you go with. The smaller ones with like .555/.565-inch lift will keep the low end power around the same and will gain power in the higher RPM range. And these small blocks love the higher revs anyway. If that car had that cam and about 3:55 gears it would be very fun on the street and sound mildly aggressive.
That 307 is a factory roller. Not worth building as the heads are JUNK. The best bet for more power is an Olds 350/403/455. They all drop right in place of that 307. The next thing to worry about that that 200 4R trans. Won't take much abuse without some good parts and attention. Then there is the 7.5' diff.
It can be made quick easily enough.
And no Olds engine will take a cam much over .500 lift without major mods to the heads. That 307 just isn't worth the time.
Mustie you and I are so alike. Any oil leak is a “small” leak and “probably is just a little leftover from the last thing I fixed.”

I really enjoyed this episode! Cutlasses and regal's are vehicles I love! Oh yeah he you want to tighten up the front end swap the front spindles and springs with one from a 74-81 Camaro, firebird, or Malibu! It will lower the front and tighten the turning radius ! Oh how I wish it were mine I would enjoy it! I would deffinately swap the parts I mentioned but that's me!

I think I started hearing banjos on the last part of the test drive. Great Video! I had a '86too that I called "the pillow" that was soooo smooth. A guy told me it was because of a bad sway bar, but I wasnt about anything that rode that nice !

I was sold a 76 cutlass bro ham from my grandpa in 86 with only 13k original everything. It had the chevy 350 and was absolutely perfectly new condition. It was for sure the best car i ever owned. Well the most fun i had as a teenager and lets just say the backseat was well used. Man i wish i never sold it, i would love to have it as a project now.

I bought one of only 49 Acadiana Special Edition Cutlass Supremes for the first model yeaar in 1978. It was a beautiful little Rocket. Fully loaded, V-8 power, automatic on the console with Maroon interior. It was a Maroon over a pearl white body. The ASX edition which this was only came in 4 colors. Maroon, Sea or deep sea blue, British racing green, and gold. All were the same two tone paint, dark color over pearl white. Interiors were the same color as the paint. I wish I would have kept the car every time I see one of this generation of Cutlass Supreme. These Olds models were pretty tough cars. They were made really well and are easy to work on.

OMG! I had an '85 Cutlass Supreme Brougham....same color with same split roof but with a matching rubberized wing on the trunk. Shift on the floor though. I used to call it the gutless Cutlass because it would only spin the tires turning a corner on wet leaves! It cruised nice though. Brings back memories.
We got a jumper pack, a headlight, put me in mind of the blues brothers....it’s 106 miles to Chicago.......

I had one just like it but the inside color was navy blue. I also had a 85 Buick Regal Limited. Black on the outside and inside was Gray. Both cars was super nice. Just a memory now.
I had a cutlass like that one with a olds engine they had a metal intake gasket that was bad to fail mine went thru 3 as long as i had it.

In the '70s, the Cutlass was very popular with both young and old people, but by '86, it was more a car for middle-agers. Hence the frequency of the brougham roof. Without the vinyl, though, the roofline is a lot better looking. They made 442s that year, and they didn't have the vinyl. Too bad that tearing it off would be more work than repairing the vinyl.
I owned one of these 1978 with a 260 V8. It was a great car for it's time. The rotors were bad for breaking down at the distributor shaft but that totaly killed the engine. Once the ignition module failed, it broke down on the hiway and I had to hitch a ride to the parts store. The carburator shaft wore leaking vacuum at the throttle plate shaft requiring adjustments to the electronic metering valve to pass emissions.
Memories of my 86’ 442. Same interior, without the ceiling drag!!! Loved that car!!!

Those carbs are notorious for leaking everything out of the bowl over time sitting (overnight even) to where you have to crank and crank to fill the bowl at first.
You can epoxy up some little tiny freeze-plug looking things on the carb and solve it (must use modern epoxy made for Gas with Alcohol in it)

I was just about to type this exact thing. Quadrajets have two well plugs in them. Over time those plugs wear down and will eventually allow gas to seep out of the carb and drain the float bowl. Exact same thing happens with my 79 Chevy pickup. Start it every day and just just have to breathe on the key. Let it sit for 3-4 days and you have to crank it for about 10 seconds to get fuel back into the carb.
@@Shane-Singleton i wonder if thermoquads are the same way? after my dads duster 340 sits for a couple weeks i always have to fill the bowls or youll be there cranking all day.
@@mikemoyercell Maybe. Although thermoquads have a habit of the phenolic housing actually cracking so it may be losing fuel that way.
Hey Mustie, check the spark plug on that cylinder with the bad plug wire end. When ends burn like that, they tend to carbon track the porcelain on the plug and cause a misfire issue.....food for thought!

My first car was a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass LS. This was pretty nostalgic for me.
I had a blue olds cutlass back in my 20's Was a doer upper but ran out of money and let it slip by the wayside, cost £500 , it drove, but was mouldy inside and carpets urgh, Never mind. Was a great experience with American cars at the time.
That drive threw woods took me back to high school and going back to our party spot in the "stripper cuts" as we called it lol. Good times.

What a sweet ride. I just love the stance of this car. I had a 79 cutlass that i have many fond memories of.
The reason the wheels are so close is that they are 14 x 7 Super Stock wheels from 1970 to 1974 Olds Cutlass and 442. From 75 on they had snap on center caps opposed to yours that bolt on from the back. That 86 had 14 x 6 wheels originally with snap on center caps as I described. Nice car though, I have 2 older ones.
