1955 Buick Super: WILL IT RUN AFTER 30 YEARS?! | Junkyard Flip

  • This 1955 Buick Series 50 Super will become my new junkyard flip after almost 30 years of sitting in a field. Biggest question for this series is, will it run and drive? The story goes, original owner towed an Airstream camper and sold it as a pair after sitting for 27 years. Second owner let it sit for about 2 years and decided to split out the Buick from the Airstream. Now it's my turn, and it's time to determine if it'll run again?

    On a Buick the gas pedal is the switch to the starter. Turn key to on and push the gas pedal.

    It's crazy how some cars are left abandoned for years until someone takes it and gives it good care. I got excited when the car's engine started when you put the motor oil in the car and it started to run!!

      @@StateFun I had a fire engine red '59 Chevy Impala in the 80s. It was clean and straight, but the old 283 was toast. I found a wrecked 72 Nova, dropped in the 350, and voila! Hello Jake, love that 55 Super! By now you know the engine is a 322 Buick Nail Head. It has close to 200 HP. The Difference between the Super and Roadmaster, is trim and the 4 barrel carburetor. One of my older Brothers had a 55 Super Riviera 2 Dr. It was pretty quick, Brother put a 4 Barrel Carburetor on the engine. It did make a difference. Also in 55 Buick used what's called vertical pitch in the transmission, it was passing gear. Dynaflow transmission never shifted on its own. (D) Drive was Drive (L) Low was Low there was no shifting from low to Drive. Hope to see you driving it.

    In 1960 I put one of those 1955 322 cu. In. Buick engines in my 1953 Ford 2-door Customline Ford.........It was a great swap from the old flathead to an overhead valve engine that is called a Nailhead today........It was also changed to a 12 volt system and my brother put resistors on all the 6-volt gauges so I could still use them........The engine costs 100 dollars used and I scored a 3 carb set-up for 50 bucks........All the adapters were home made except for the aluminum bellhousing......The car and engine ran great.......You can't beat those prices from years ago.........

      Hmm. Guess I'll have to try fitting those when I get that interior back in. I'm not sure if I'm going to recover the existing seats or try to swap out for buckets in the front with a custom center console. The rear is a little tricky with the space it fits into.

      @StateFun  Рік тому +1

But IF you do decide to go with front bucket seats in it, I would recommend getting them from just about any early to mid 60s GM BIGGER CAR like a Jetfire, Riviera, Impala.... Basically any bigger GM car from no newer than 65 or 66 can look acceptable whereas newer one just look out of place in those 50s Buicks.

    I had my uncles '63 Buick Lesabre with essentially this same "Nail Head" buick engine but mine was the newer 401cu in version, there was also a Wildcat version in the sixties with high compression and dual four barrel carburetors, available in the Riviera or Wildcat and later I think the GS models. Around '66 Buick introduced new ohv engine designs and retired the famous "Nailhead" configuration, so named for its flat valve cover and valve angle arrangement.

I am confident that the heads are not made of wood and nailed to the engine block as I am equally certain that you can't put together an inline 6 Chevrolet by going to a hardware store and grabbing a bag of stove bolts. Folks are just being lazy. I like post war GM cars and trucks. Keep up the good work.

    It would require a lot of work, but, it would be lots of fun seeing it being restored.

      Yeah, I'm thinking more "driver restoration" where it's not perfection, but still turns out nice and doesn't hurt the emotions if a rock dings it going down the road.

    I think maybe you might be incorrect on the engine size. No it is I who is wrong. My dad had a 57 Special. It had a 322 cu in V-8. I thought the Super had a 364 in 57. But in 55 they all had the 5.3 322 cu in. The Super, Century and Roadmaster should have a 4 bbl, while the Special should be a 2bbl, I believe. My dad also had a 56 Super. I had a 53 Special for a short time when I first got back from Vietnam. All of them had the 2 spd Dynaflow. All Buicks in the 50s were great cars and I liked them all. The 57 my dad had was the car I learned to drive in (along with my grandpa's 49 Chev PU. But, I always had a soft spot for Buick. Would certainly be a good car to restore, in my opinion. Good job!!

      @StateFun  Рік тому

      I was kinda expecting it to have the 4bbl carb when I bought it, when I try to search for parts there's a 2bbl and a 4 bbl option, and I can't imagine someone would take a 4bbl off to put a 2 bbl on, so I can only assume it's the stock configuration

    Its a Buick nailhead engine that was used a lot and parked for a long time. Dont be afraid to give it a heavier drink of gasmoline. 1. Even though its been sitting for years, there is a carbon buidup in the engine that will absorb a good percentage of the gas poured in and preventing it from getting in to run on. 2 Those Nailheads were extremely thirsty when it came to gas. I dont think that a naiilhead was ever built that got decent mileage.... 12 mpg was considered great on them whereas other brands could get up to and even over 20mpg

    Years ago I had a Buick just like that.... I wish I still had it... it was an awesome runner but a real gas hog.....and the transmission is so smooth you cant even feel or hear it shift... If the electrical is right, it should start when you press down on the accelerator.

    • @StateFun
      @StateFun  Рік тому

      It does start off the accelerator now, but the throttle linkage was stuck during this video

    I'm only half way in, but my friend had a 57 special and to start buicks of that age you pressed the throttle to the floor. The ignition switch was just to turn power on to the car.

    • @StateFun
      @StateFun  Рік тому +1

      Yep! Problem is, my throttle pedal was missing and more importantly, the throttle linkage on the carb was stuck! I've got it cleaned and working now though!

    There should be a splash pan protecting the starter from water getting into the solenoid. Lots of times that pan is missing and the solenoid gets wet from driving in the rain and the starter won't work. The 4 BBL carb and manifold in the trunk is the right one for the car. The 2 BBL carb is from a Special, the smaller series Buick.
