I think the theme playing over Lucy looking at the flag is foreshadowing that she’ll fight to restore the NCR (or at least try to). After all, it was the Vault Dweller and the Chosen One who helped shape the NCR into the powerhouse it was

And it is iconic how in a way it was vault tec who built shady sands. Think about it. The original vault dweller from vault 13 and his descended the chosen one both came from a blood line of vault dwellers. Plus the geck used to shape shady sands into what it was. All circle backs to vault tec ironic how Hank couldn’t do any research

    • @Dicehiggins
      @Dicehiggins 6 місяців тому +30

I was disappointed that the fact that shady sands was established by vault dwellers wasn't mentioned. I wonder if part of Hanks issue with them is not that shady sands was a post war settlement but that the vault they came from wasn't a vault tec experiment, but one of their competitors experiments.

    • @jazzyjswift

@@Dicehiggins I mean it was also established on the complete opposite end of california than where it is in the show. In the games Shady Sands is in Death Valley near the California-Nevada border.
In the show they replaced The Angel's Boneyard with Shady Sands on the other end where Los Angeles was. Shady Sands =/= Los Angeles prior to the show.

I always liked the idea that Titus dying from a Yao Gui and the claw marks on Maximus' armor is symbolism for him as well, considering he's from Shady Sands. I imagine the next season will focus on his split loyalties with that fact in mind.

  • @NathanWeeks

In New Vegas it's noted the NCR is facing shortages of electricity, water, and food, which is why they needed to expand. It makes sense that they couldn't devote resources to rebuild Shady Sands and might have abandoned the whole area in favor of better locations; even in the real world whole towns sometimes get abandoned when resources dry up.
I suspect Moldaver and a few die-hards refused to abandon the area, or the NCR authorized her activities but wouldn't commit any resources to it. Restoring power might give the NCR a reason to return, possibly sparking another war with the Brotherhood.

plus the fact... Valut Tek just nuked Shady sands and if they rebuilt it there, it's high risk of it happening again. be stupid to re build in that location. Hoping they re built somewhere else! Hoping Maxwell has a chance to see his roots.

From what little they've shown in New Vegas from the show. I don't imagine the NCR in campaign in the Mojave was successful. I've never played siding the legion, but by all appearances without the main characters assistance they are failing on multiple fronts and are stretched too thin. Moreover the legion has multiple potential allies and highly strategic positions. I think the second battle of Hoover Dam is a legion success and the NCR retreats, finding itself routed and taking heavy casualties as they harrassed by the legion/ allies in their retreat.
The NCR army licking its wounds/ potentially fortifying shady sands as potentially it would be a legion target being the NCR capital. It gets nuked something unlike their legion enemy. Massive losses and blood in the water the NCR enemies jumped in. The NCR is left in a fight to survive and clutching on to maintain order is its still valuable territories leaving a power vacume in its wake.
It's interesting that though that with maximus as an example that this is a generation after the nuking of shady sands. Perhaps just like in world War 1 and world War 2 in our world which was fought by fathers and their sons. The NCR will rebolster and once again has the ability to expand instead of just desperately defending what they still have.

In the show, we see only a contingency of Elder Cleric Quintus not the Lost Hills bunker which operated as the Brotherhood HQ of the West-Coast for over two centuries, populated with the best paladins, scribes, knights and the council of Elders. Absent of the Lost Hills means two possible reasons.
      1. Lost Hills Brotherhood conducted an all-out war after or even before Shady Sands got nuke, that would explained why Quintus' contingency lives on the surface, because Lost Hills is gone in the 2nd (or 3rd) NCR-Brotherhood war, leaving Eastern Brotherhood the only Brotherhood power house. That would also explains the absent of the actual NCR military, war with Brotherhood hit them so hard that the military crumble to the ground and got disbanded or got order to rendevous in the other cities, leaves Moldaver and the Shady Sands remnants run alone.
      2. Lost Hills Brotherhood was disbanded by the new High Elder, Brotherhood in Capital Wasteland could use Pentagon or 'The Citadel' as their new HQ. Arthur Maxson want to remove the old Brotherhood principles as he inherit both Lyon's and Brotherhood's core principles that seem to be inferior by Lost Hills, that would be the reason why he want the symbol of the old Brotherhood to be gone.
Both reasons will lead to the conclusion why Elder Cleric Quintus hates the current Brotherhood as he is one of the Lost Hills remnants and want to recreate a new Western Brotherhood that use the old principles that built the BoS up to this point itself.

I think what is very likely is that her sacrifice will inspire the residents of California. She will be more powerful in death as a martyr. We already saw that in the vault that she is worshiped by the survivors of shady sands. What she did with restoring power for free was huge.
This show is structured like a fallout game so I think in season 2 or 3 we will see a third NCR. United from the rubble. They will fight both the enclave and BOS in three way war. Lucy will be caught in the middle of it and like in the games get to help decide how this all ends. Like does she side with the brotherhood with maximus, the enclave with her father, the NCR, or for her own interests with the ghoul. Maybe create a new faction.

Just a note to anyone wondering. Talking to one of the Freeside NCR squatters in Fallout New Vegas will reveal that Shady Sands wasn't the capital at the time of New Vegas. The Freeside NPC refer to Shady Sands as "the FIRST capital of the NCR."
Also the refugees in Vault 4 probably DO think the NCR is totally gone. It's possible Moldaver encouraged that idea and that only blood and fire could bring it all back because she's placing the seed for a fanatical cult army down the line. She's called the "flame mother" which makes me think that her cold fusion technology might be related to ultracite from Fallout 76. Meaning that the means to achieve cold fusion always required nuclear war to generate the ultracite. Hence Hanks statement that she's no better than him. We MAY find how in the next season that Hank is exactly right on that point. How the hell did she survive 200+ years? Why is she called "The Flame Mother?"
In a Fallout playthrough these would all scream "red flag" to me. Dubious motivation and a hidden agenda.

That Shady Sands still represents an important political center in 2281 is consistent with it being the old capital.
This mirrors US history in that Washington DC was NOT the first capital. Philadelphia was. But that was never popular with the other major cities because Philadelphia was a competitor. The creation of Washington DC was a deliberate attempt to avoid the problem of what existing city should be the capital by creating a new city.

It could also be that they didn't return to Shady Sands because aside from the potential warlord issue, the destruction of Shady Sands could lead to repeats of the NCR correctional facility riot, alongside issues caused by opportunistic raiders, potential legion remnants, ect, which could possibly explain why Moldaver's force are the only NCR in the area, as the rest of the NCR military could be dealing with the previously mentioned threats.

I actually have a very good analogy for the situation of what happened to Shady Sands and the NCR. This is what I like to call “Pulling a Johnny Flashback” for those of you who haven’t played Cyberpunk 2077, it’s worth mentioning that it isn’t just a random game CD Projekt Red made, rather the first virtual game that of a long running Tabletop RPG Series, and in one of those Games we could see Johnny Silverhand Raid on Arasaka Tower…
Long story short, the Events described by the Tabletop Game and what Cyberpunk 2077 depicts happening are completely inaccurate. CD Projekt Red later damage-controlled by saying “oh, Johnny is a crazy schizo narcissist boy so of course it would be inaccurate” the fanboys bought this excuse hook line and sinker, but i could very easily tell it was just a clever excuse to save face at poor communication between the source material and the Adapters. We can prove this was never the original interpretation of Johnny’s Flashback being nonsense as other characters in the game describe that event occurring exactly as Johnny remembers it.
We are seeing this again with Fallout. In the End Credits of one episode we see a charred Schoolbus of Shady Sands, with a Library Book showing a list of checkout and return dates. The last checkout date? *2277.* So unless this kid chose to steal the book but kept bringing it with her to school, Shady Sands was destroyed, i the minds of the Showwriters, in 2277. This whole “Oh, the Fall was something else, it got blown up after FNV” is 100% a case of pulling a Johnny Flashback.
It’s a easy excuse that most will accept and move on with, hell, I’ll accept it too, but I’m operating under no illusions that this wasn’t just convenient Damage Control.

And after Arron Kimbal was either removed from office or killed (leaning toward killed if my theory of the Independent Ending is the cannon ending to New Vegas considering the post credit pull way at the end of Season 1) the new NCR president decided to focus on rebuilding, consolidating their power and stop their rapid expansion. Given that, when Shady Sands got boomed the new NCR president decided that Shady Sands was a low priority so only sent Moldaver to rally the survivors as a token gesture to keep the voters off their back.
From that perspective it would make sense as to why when the Brotherhood attacked Moldaver's forces they were so weak, the main NCR basically left Moldaver to lead a skeleton crew. Given how they were depicted in New Vegas that seems to fit with their track record.

A ncr struggling with debt and reliant on the expensive water and power of new Vegas potentially gaining access to cold fusion… that information could prove vital for the rebuilding of ncr and putting them back on the map. However… just as cold fusion is accomplished… brotherhood forces come in and take it… maybe even occupying the region with troops. Once ncr realises cold fusion is in shady sands, they are going to likely return in force… but they need to organise to do it. Something some of their leaders might be hesitant to do without assurances that house or the courier won’t cripple them financially. That’s why season 2 is focusing on new Vegas. Because if the situation in Vegas changes… then potentially NCR can strike at the brotherhood, probably in a 3rd battle of new Vegas.

All that sounds like manufactured cover up by Vault 31, for events in Vault 33 that happened during 2276 to 2277 when Rose went out with kids, and kids got back during (late) 2277 (would explain why Lucy has only short memory of all that), while Rose stayed out and was proclaimed dead. And only about 5yrs after all that Shady Sands got nuked. So quite some happened during those 5yrs, including NCR/Shady Sands internal political, economic and other issues, that led to Shady likely losing Capital of NCR status.
    Again, we will see..

Join brotherhood, Railroad and Institute killed, and Minutemen have no general to rebuild.
      Railroad, same deal,
      Institute, same deal,
Minutemen leave both BOS and Railroad alive unless you make them your enemy, technically the institute as well, but I doubt the canon ending is everyone just getting along and existing together and the institute is the main enemy of the game.

The reality is that Moldaver calling her settlement the "HQ" of the NCR doesn't necessarily mean anything. The NCR was huge, and all corners of it wouldn't have extremely easy communication with one another. Much like the Brotherhood, there are likely other settlements that consider themselves the torchbearers of the NCR now who may not even know Moldaver and her group exists. Depending on how much the NCR lost in Shady Sands, it also might not have been a simple matter of coming back in and re-establishing themselves.
When it comes to Fallout theorycrafting, you always have to stay very local with your thinking and resist the urge to start drawing larger conclusions about massive entities like the NCR, or the Enclave, or the Brotherhood, etc. because the writers can and likely will always reveal that there's some heretofore unseen chapter, or force, or settlement out there.

  • @areoborg

I have my own theory about what is going on with the NCR.
I think that the NCR was in the process of becoming like the Roman Empire when it was in the process of splitting between the Eastern Empire, centered around Constantinople, and the Western Empire, centered around Rome. So you have the primary capital of Shady Sands, their first one, and a second capital centered somewhere else (The Hub, Vault City, etc). The bear has 2 heads after all. You could even say that the Fall of Shady Sands was when it stopped becoming the singular capital of the NCR.
Now, why was everyone talking about Shady Sands and their policies and influences in New Vegas? Because the 2nd capital was in the northern end of the NCR, and Shady Sands ended up being in control of the southern end, which is where Vegas and the Hoover Dam was located, meaning that they would have been the ones in charge of any operations out there.
After the nuking of Shady Sands, the other capital decided to focus on addressing the internal problems in their half of the country since the NCR under Shady Sands was over extended, exhausted, and run more by the Braman Barrons, and they left the Shady Sands area to fend for themselves. Much like how the Western Roman Empire was allowed to fall apart by the Eastern half of the empire.
    But that's just my thought.

Apparently, some people genuinely aren't able to remember anything at all that happened before the age of 6 or 7. But even when we do, we still can't always remember things linearly, sometimes its just flashes of events things or places. I'm not sure how old Lucy is, but it is possible Hank gaslit her into thinking the memories were dreams, or a story she made up while playing make believe. I don't know how much younger Norm is than Lucy, but she seems really young in the flashbacks, if he was a toddler he would likely not remember at all, being able to form autobiographical memories (things you can recall having lived throughout your life) at that age is very rare. Also, to muddle it even more, your brain can from false memories. I had a couple really "vivid memories" from when I was really young sbout trips me and parents took that turned out to have been dreams I had, of places similar enough to other kinds of places they did take me to regularly, but that when you recall the details, those two particular places in the "memories" don't actually exist anywhere in the world. Memory is a fascinating thing. I'm also curious about the famine that supposedly killed Rose officially. Was it a real thing that actually did happen close enough in time that Hank was able to manipulate the kids into remembering the two things as overlapping? Or was there never a famine, and he and Betty just privately told little Lucy and Norm that it was a really hard time for everyone and to just never speak of it, because it would only upset people, and they obeyed, so it never came up that he lied about it?

And look, if you look at the background, the NCR is a wide-ranging sort of organization and group across not just California, but other places. It could help bridge to a degree between both mediums
Not fully astute about my fallout lore, but wasn't the NCR founded by vault people?

Ah yes, Todd Howard, the biggest liar in gaming who never admits his mistakes. Sure, let's pretend everything he said is what he really meant to happen, let's pretend he didn't intentionally use the show to destroy the lore for Fallout 1,2, and NV.

@@ClintOrris Prove what you say has any factual ground in reality. You are accusing him and Nolan of a conspiracy to ruin fallout NV intentionally, prove it.
They did not ruin lore according to the creator of fallout Tim Cain, he has said lore changes slightly each installment, they even changed it in 2 from 1. He said the ghoul lore was intentionally left vague for the future. Here you are claiming to know more than Fallout's creator, prove your claims.
Bethesda said New Vegas is canon, they just never told you what ending is canon. Perhaps you need to watch season 2 before going tin foil hat.

@@ClintOrris He isn't even the writer, showrunner or director of the show so how would he be the one trying to use the show to destroy anything? He's one of the executive producers and not even a producer who are more involved in the filmmaking process. Also why would he try to destroy the lore? Bethesda doesn't have any rivalry with Obsidian or Interplay last I checked, except for the made up stories about them being enemies which some fallout fans try to cook up.
I'm not a big fan of what happened to the NCR in the show either, but I doubt Todd is out there trying to intentionally destroy any lore lol.

@@romansionis2470 you obviously haven't been paying attention. Todd Howard himself has taken credit for all of these changes. He admit he intentionally did this when clarifying the drama about Shady Sands.

You know the founders of Shady Sands were originally from Valt 15, an experiment to house many people from different cultures, religions, and colors.
But I'm sure you know how it went.
On a side note, If NCR won in the second battle of Hover Dam during the events of New Vegas, Shady Sands would end up destroyed and which means NCR occupation of New Vegas would weaken, and either the Legion take over New Vegas, one of the small factions took Vegas for their own, or worst Vegas will end up destroying itself by the people fighting for control of New Vegas.

One thing that bugs me... doesn't shady sands not exist anymore. It was shady sands in fallout 1 and only fallout 1. When you come to what was previously shady sands in fallout 2 I'm pretty sure it's just known as the new California Republic. All these people calling it shady sands now makes no sense because most of them probably wouldn't know what shady sands was. After the first game everyone else calls it the NCR and unless you go through some dialogue you could probably play through all of fallout 2 without realizing it even was shady sands.

NO. Its POST POST apocalypse. Its 200 years after the Old World DIED. The NCR was formed from Shady Sands, a farming community, and Fallout 2 it was the CAPITAL of the New California Republic. It was showing society was progressing FORWARD.
By the time of FNV they already reformed 5 STATES of what was once parts of the South West and Colorado.

I don’t think Muldavor is a general, but a sponsored scientist promising that her project would be crucial to restoring Shady Sands. This would ease the question of why she personally went to Vault 33 or be allowed to do so by those she works with, this can be answered in 2 separate answers. This first is that either she knows what Hank Maclane looks like, maybe she tried to convince him that Vault tech was wrong (though this once again brings up the question of why he didn’t recognize her, only answer I can think of is that he thought she died 14 years ago and had forgotten her face), or that Lucy’s mother told her enough about the vault for her to have an intimate knowledge of the layout.
The second is very personal in that she was very angry at Hank specifically and wanted him to know who it was who ruined his life, almost as vengeance for Lucy’s mother, Shady Sands, and maybe even her cold fusion project and vault Tec in general.
