There is no such thing as cruelty free. Not truly. Most of these brands boasting this BS are using ingredients previously tested in animals that are known to be safe, including when combined.
So, they are boasting bs over someone elses achievements.

It's a 10 is cruelty-free, so is CHI, Joico (I think), Pureology, Alterna, Amika, Shea Moisture (drugstore brand makes a nice clarifying shampoo) and Moroccan Oil is cruelty free also. For a larger list check Cruelty Free Kitty or Ethical Elephant. Don't bother with PETA because they will say a company is cruelty free if they pay 3rd party companies to do their testing

THANK YOU for mentioning both the whole "system" thing and the "natural/organic/clean" thing. I tell this to people all the time! My shampoo, conditioner, and stylers are all from different brands because the *products* work for me. Same for my skincare. And I've had allergies since I was three and everything I'm allergic to is "natural/organic/clean" and I have to use synthetic medications to prevent or heal from the problems they cause for me.

    • @sarawhite9338

Good points. The 'natural' crap doesn't work for me either from most brands unless it's plant based & has zero synthetic fragrance. I'm highly allergic to synthetic fragrance, as in I can't use or touch it. I've gotten hives on my wrist from having it on a shopping cart handle while shopping one day. My hands itched for a week after using the wrong soap because we were at a restaurant & it's all they had available (I now carry my own plant based soap in a travel bottle in my purse & always have unscented baby wipes & sanitizer too). Allergies are awful. & I'm on synthetic meds too for hypothyroidism & other stuff). Good luck🍀 managing your allergies & disorders. ❤💚🌷

Fragrance free products are also great, especially for laundry & household cleaners. I also always keep at least my socks on at other peoples houses because floor cleaners can & have given me itchy feet due to allergy to synthetic fragrance. I even had itchy feet after wearing thin socks at a friend's house! It sucked.

He's wrong on a few points. There's loads of natural products out there and some are better than others, like with anything. You just have to find what works for you. Some of them do just replace buzzwords with an equivalent; some genuinely use better ingredients. Saying "you'll use sulfates in toothpaste anyway" is not only ignoring all of the sulfate free toothpastes out there, but why would you use more if you don't have to? Not to mention people that don't want to use endocrine disrupting chemicals or have allergies to certain ingredients. It's reductive to say all natural products are the same.

I accidentally stumbled upon your channel and god I feel like it was some kind of universal interference because I was spending way too much on expensive hair products. Nothing worked. Chris and Subs: OK here I am 68 yo. Am an RN, so three years ago went pn a deep research dive regarding hair/skin health; a journey for sure. I thank you for helping me grow out my hair so beautifully. I use your recommended products, standards of care and tools. Olaplex, a boar's bristle brushThe small investment was well worth it. I do take a great collagen supplement and a large prescription dose of Vit D for a low D3 level and a bit of osteoporosis and I think this has helped with some accelerated hair growth. However, your tips, tricks and products have made all the difference! Thank you sooooooooo much.

I feel that last part about the strengthening products. For a long time I thought I was doing something wrong while growing my hair out because it was really weak and a lot thinner than it had been in the past. I tried all kinds of products and they never worked. Eventually I realized it was just my health. Improving my diet and later dealing with the root problem were the only things that made me see any improvements. It's a bit sad that there's no quick and easy solution for everybody out there who can't fix their health problems though :(

Before I listened to Chris, I never ever ever thought I could go more than one day between washing my hair - it seemed to never grow, was super dry, so I chalked it up to the “bonuses” of being over 50. In the past, I had friends in gym classes who told me about dry shampoo, gotta try it, blah blah blah, but they were younger, had better hair than me, what do they know 😂? Now, I’m up to 5 days sometimes!!! Thanks to the “Emily in Paris” video that Chris did, I can still work out AND have good hair - amazing…truly. My hair is healthier, softer, getting longer, and I’m repairing some damage that I did before I watched the Revlon Blow-dry Brush video (oops). But it’s just so life changing to not have to wash my hair every day! Freedom! Forever grateful for Chris’ awesome and entertaining videos!!!

I'm 61 and over the last 5-10 years, my hair has gotten thin, brittle, and frizzy. I missed my soft and smooth hair so much, so I went to a new stylist a few weeks ago and told her my issues. It was pretty obvious so I doubt I needed to even tell her, but she used and recommended Olaplex products. I'd never heard of the brand, but I bought a starter bundle and my hair is already changing and smoothing. I can even see new growth which I didn't expect. Thanks for the great information. Here, I find your common sense on other aspects of dealing with your hair. It's very refreshing to hear the negation of so much of the hair care industry. And you finish with wise guidance. Thanks for such a welcome change. Whilst I come from the 60s, my rigid chemistry and general scientific background, have guided me passably, until now. Finally, I will try one of your recommended products to treat my mildly but ever-damaged hair. From the wisdom and rigour that permeates all of your comments, I have no hesitation to try your recommendations.

I have a showerhead I bought off Amazo, and you just replace the filter cartridge every few months or so, depending on how rough your water is. I can attest it not only makes a huge difference in hair (we get so used to living with hard water etc. we don't even realize how it impacts us), but skin, as well.bI used to get itchy after my short, despite using shea butter, etc. Once I installed this showerhead, it stopped. Soon as I start to get itchy again, and/or my hair feels heavy, I know it's time to change the filter. One of the best things I've done for myself. And it's inexpensive.

I was no poo for 7 years. My hair went from shine, 3a/3b, medium to thick and normal to the touch at 38 to a frizzy mess of 2b/2c/3a, fine, very opaque, dry, thin and... it fell. It gave me the appearance of androgenetic alopecia at 45 y old.
I started with Deva and my hair just got worst and worst. I kept jumping brands thinking I needed to find one my hair liked. Then, my friends started asking me why I was straightening my beautiful curls and later what was happening because I was going bald basically.
Believe me. Contrary to every curly girl I've heard online, my hair is very much celebrated by people that know and don't know me. 😂 So I heard them and decided to face my fears.
Labs tests normal, an androgenic alopecia diagnosis, some video watching and some thinking later and I realized it could only be the no poo.
I went back to the sulphates and silicones I used for 38 years without problems and I had to spend some $$ to recover my scalp and hair. It is been 4 years I left the no poo behind and my hair couldn't be better.
I still care for it, but that is because I am 49 and the menopause is around the corner.
I don't recommend going natural. If you do and your hair gets worse.... leave it asap! I could spend some pretty penny to recover my hair/scalp from the damage, but those that can't will face harsher times.

I tried honey as a no poo. It kinda worked but not that well. Used eggs for treatments and coconut oil to make it healthy. Worked for a short time. Baking soda ruined my hair badly. So did trying to straighten with natural oils. Walnut oil and a flat Iron don't go together because of flash point and avocado oil left a greasy mess hard to wash out. Shampoo and Conditioner are still the best bet for the least damage.

I was going to try a bunch of the recommended products and routines months ago, but it's way too freaking expensive. So all I changed was getting a Wet brush and I think it's helped. I tried washing twice and that was a nightmare, like everything was stripped from my scalp. I can go a few weeks between washes without my hair getting gross. My scalp didn't like the hard well water I moved to so I tried Apple Cider Vinegar rinses but it was a hassle, so I tried a few shampoo samples with ACV/detox labels including Ouai. They worked but Ouai is way expensive, so I tried Pura d'Or ACV Thin2Thick Shampoo and conditioner and they work well, no more hairline scalp flakes (didn't make my hair thicker), but a stylist told me I had a lot of breakage making it seem like I had thinner hair than I do. So I've been using Dove Hair Therapy Breakage Remedy conditioner (I know! The horror: cheap product promising fixes!) and I like the results of the two brands. It's been a few months of the brush and conditioner change and lately I've been thinking my hair feels a lot thicker where it was thin before, so I'm hoping there's been less breakage.

Thank you so much for clarifying whether we actually *need* scalp scrubs or not. I have tried a couple of brands, and neither worked for me. The actually wrecked my scalp and hair, and it would take days to nurse them back to normal. I was perturbed by the idea of trying another brand, even a "natural" one. But over and over, I would see (on Instagram esp.) that I "needed" them. I am so glad to hear that I don't need them, but instead should focus on proper shampooing technique and use of proper hair products.
