Actually, if you wanna get nerdy. Meshuggah hardly ever plays polyrhythms ( Not even Haake)... I hear people say it all the time and it's actually not true.
Meshuggah mostly plays something called ' poly-metrics'. It's different time signatures layered on top of each other. 7/8 over 4/4, 5/16 over 4/4 etc...
Polyrhythms would be if they played quintuples over 16thnotes, or triplets over septuplets. But almost all the patterns Meshuggah play are derived from straight 8th, 16th or 32nd notes.
I've actually only ever heard Meshuggah play one polyrhythm.
It happens in Future Breed Machine before the coda starts.
      It's quarter-note triplets over straight 8th notes...
      There you go...
Now you can go be a real nerd, even to the super-nerdy Meshuggah-fans. =)

    • @TheMeatballMen
      @TheMeatballMen 8 років тому

+mjollner23 they actually don't even really do that many polymeters. they do mostly synchronization to 4/4. Closed Eye Visuals for example is 4/4 broken down into three bars of 5/4 and then a bar of 1/1 to make it the same as four bars of 4/4. Really they just mostly play 4/4 with a few weird bars thrown into a long cycle

TheMeatballMen Polymeters doesn't mean that both meters has to stay constant.
There just needs to be two different meters happening at the same time, which Meshuggah has most of the time.
But I get what you mean...
Meshuggah usually lets the 4/4 dictate where the polymetric cycle restarts.
The second pattern is always subordinate, and they will always cut it so that it loops with the 4/4.
I think they mostly do this to keep some kind of song-structure. I imagine things would get very long if they had to wait for all patterns to loop.

The pattern at 2:34 is actually
    Xxx-x-x-x-x-x
    Xxx-x-x-x-x-x
    Xxx-x-x-x
    Xxx-x-Xxx-x-x-x
Technically you have it notated right, you’d just have to start on the last line.

This is like the 10th time it shows up in my recommended videos, and it's the 10th time I've heard it
I usually hate long videos and songs, but this song goes by so quickly
Plus, the cover is so well done that it just sounds very pleasing in my head -u-
