It wouldn't have been made if there was no demand for it. You are the consumer, it is your demand that creates the ipod, if there was no demand, there would be no ipod made.
It has been calculated that if the human species would stop reproducing for 30 years, the global population would drop by approximately 1.6 billion. This is of course utopistic idea that will never happen. But it would alleviate plenty of issues concerning climate change and overconsumption. It would also cause other kinds of issues, a generation without a parenthood and a major baby boom after those 30 years. Of course, such an extreme change wouldn't be fair to everyone- some cultures need children more than others. Nevertheless: Presently declining birth rates (at least here in EU) are a reaction to increasing poverty and the ever-increasing instability in the world. Personally, I'd say it's extremely irresponsible to bring children into the world at this moment in history. In 2017, study from Lund university in Sweden stated that if an average American family decided to have one child less, the positive ecological effects are bigger, than if 684 Americans would follow a rigorous recycling plan for the rest of their lives. Here's the truth our species has to face: there's too many of us and if we cannot face that issue in a rational, objective way, the reality and nature of the future consequences will hit us, possibly kill millions of us in ways that are anything but rational. Our children, the future generations at best, will have to face a world of ever increasing poverty and unstable and extreme climate. Socioeconomic issues will only get worse. It's natural people don't want to procreate when the world is facing as much uncertainty as it is now. This is the best-case scenario at this point in the human history. Poverty and unstable climate. The worse scenarios might be avoidable. Maybe. 4 worst things to do: Private use of cars. Meat consumption. Flight travel. And the worst: Procreation. Having children. If you can skip the latter, it will have much more effect than being conscious of any of the first 3. The sad irony is...the best gift you can give to the future generations is that you don't bring them here. Not yet and not in the same numbers. You wouldn't leave a damaged house to the next tenants before you have fixed the broken foundations. Leave a better world. Use a condom.
Love Doug in general, but almost every argument about overpopulation puts the onus on women, and in a lot of places proceeds to deny women contraception. We should be promoting vasectomies.
I find it interesting that almost all developed countries have negative birthrates (ie more deaths than births). It's the developing countries which are to blame with the population surge
I guess. Overpopulation is a problem, but there aren't all that many people, in a sense, in North America and yet we do a disproportionate amount of resource-use and waste-generation. If everyone in the world starts living like Americans it won't matter if they stop increasing their numbers (as is nearly the case for Americans) or even cut their numbers in half if they don't learn to live differently. Overpopulation is largely connected to poverty. Over-use isn't directly connected to population increase. I like Doug Stanhope, but simplifying stuff to a "Yeah, fuckin' right!" point of view is just another version of "telling you what you want to hear" that he's complaining about. People don't want to hear "It's complicated". They want to hear simple points they can understand even when drunk that will elicit feelings of vehement agreement.

Let your offspring live and not suffer! Have mercy! What do you gain by endangering the welfare of your offspring???
Well, there's like 256 years' worth of coal kicking around under the ground in the US using present mining technology. So I wouldn't ordinarily think of that as "not much left". Canada, which is essentially the US, in terms of energy accessibility, has the world's largest proved oil reserves, and Canada and the US have quite a lot of uranium. So simply getting enough energy really isn't an issue, without even touching on hydroelectric and the emerging renewables. Growing enough food in North America to feed North Americans is likewise not a problem. The population density of North American is fairly low, and more or less static. With the temperate band migrating north "land" in the sense of people using it and living on it, is increasing. "Running out of stuff" because of too many people isn't on the horizon. It's not a scarcity problem, here.
The United States is the 3rd most populated nation on earth, just had to mention that because you said "there aren't all that many people" in North America. There's a fuck-ton of people in America. Just not in Canada. But in the US, we do make a lot of waste as well.
As countries become more developed, the pregnancy and birthing rates decline. This is happening, and I doubt that over-population will be the most serious problem on the table what with global warming and political strife. But the cynics of the world are desperate for easy material to cling onto and mass excrete. Pity.
yea I've never understood the desire to have kids. I think people are self important, they think they have to leave a piece of themselves behind but they don't realize if their lineage stops the world will not skip a beat.

Ever try to leave a concert or sports stadium after a game and notice that you can barely move due to the throngs of endless humans all leaving at the same time? There's enough people around, earth doesn't need any more. Just. Stop. Already.
Perhaps Doug could comment on the cash-strapped working parents who can barely afford to support one child, but they have 3 or 4 children and they complain about how tough it is to support them, as if The Stork just laid them on their doorstep, and they expect all manner of assistance & breaks from society because they have 4 little carbon emitters to support.
the study of demographics show that the world population is increasing because we are living longer, not because of couples having kids. most countries around the world have populations below repayment levels, instead we have aging populations. i don't think we want to go down the road of forced euthanasia or denying health care to the elderly in order to reduce the world population.
I don't know if "overpopulation" exists for humans, but I know that other species suffering from overpopulation don't last too long before their numbers being reduced. That I learnt in Biology from school.
Yes, this drives me nuts. It is so selfish and pompous for people to continue to breed with the current world issues. What is so difficult about contraception, no one has to stop fucking in the "front hole".
We may have been born to breed, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't have self control and willpower over our instincts and what we do, we as humans have that ability. Or, at least most people with a healthy functioning brain and basic education hopefully do.

Love Doug Stanhope but he was wrong about "fucking going out of style" as related to depopulation. The reason why population should top out and then decline in 40-50 years is because birth rates decrease as countries become more industrialized and free. In the US among existing citizens couples are having on the average 1.7 kids per household. And then when you count for accidental deaths and regular old people dying it equates to a trend that will lead to less people on the planet overall. families with 6-8 kids tend to be from undeveloped countries and agrarian cultures where there's a reasonable expectation that some won't make it and if you're living dirt poor then why not just procreate wantonly?
we arent overpopulated. we are rounded up in cities while there is plenty of unhabitated land. carbon dioxide isnt a problem at all. right now it makes 0.0038% of our air. we had higher amounts in the past.

this guy's a nut.
I bet Stanhope just read Geogia Guidestones to much, be not a cancer on earth he reads and now he promotes less humans on the planet. :(
Love Doug Stanhope but he was wrong about "fucking going out of style" as related to depopulation.
Dogs are just as bad! Why do people have to have them!
we arent overpopulated. we are rounded up in cities while there is plenty of unhabitated land. carbon dioxide isnt a problem at all. right now it makes 0.0038% of our air. we had higher amounts in the past.
This is scripture.
"DURRR DURRR " - you
That does not mean you have to ask for jobs from the murderers, that is what Stanhope did and then he got a record contract and now only people with money to spend on standup-dvd's can see his newest and last standup..
But I like the front hole :(
Me too. Just make sure the hole owner has had a contraceptive implant.
