@@nickalotI agree with your description of the S9 as a ‘fun’ camera. When I realised that was its market position I was less confused about the product. But for me there is one key feature missing: weather sealing. Fun means it being an EDC to the beach, pool (in back packs with wet towels etc), hiking, skiing, camping, bars and restaurants (ie spillage risk): not all those things everyday BTW! I just don’t feel comfortable with a non-weather sealed camera in those environments. So it is a near miss for me unfortunately.
@@Democratiser yeah damn that's true! I was VERY close to pulling the wallet on the S9, but there's something i couldn't figure out, holding me back. You're right! Weather sealing is kind of a little issue for the longevity of an everyday fun camera actually! considering the s9 is only marginally cheaper than the s5ii.. idm the size of the s5ii as a fun camera too lol. Most of the L-mount lenses look more balanced on the s5ii anyways!
@@nickalot This is where I see the G9II as the better solution for me from the current line up. I picked up a G9 for video in 2021 to complement my canon 5DIII. The G9 is excellent and it has taught me a lot but as everyone says the pulsing and mis-focusing in CAF with CDAF becomes excruciating. I don’t really ‘need’ FF for video but bought a LUMIX 50mm lens in anticipation of buying a S5II and was waiting for pricing to drop a bit. Then the G9II arrived! As I have 10 MFT lenses (6 Olympus, 4 LUMIX), including 3 zooms and 7 smaller primes, G9II is a very good option really. A GX9II would probably be even better, so I’m hoping for that to land at some point, but otherwise I think I’ll get the G9II. Ironically if a GX9II is released (with weather sealing unlike the GX9) and I buy that, then I might consider a FF lumix for locked off / interior video as well at some point. This all gets very complicated!
Thanks for your comparison. I suffer from the ‘to full frame or not to full frame’ dilemma. I have a G9 and the AF is obviously its weakness. I’m thinking of a S5II or G9II. I have a Canon 5DIII for portraits so don’t really need another FF. But I do need reliable AF. As I have about 10 MFT lenses the G9II is very appealing and your video helps overcome the FF FOMO, which I experience when contemplating getting a G9II! It is a very powerful camera! Welcome any thoughts you might have!
hey! HAHA i also constantly suffer from the FF fomo! But I realised, in most cases especially video, f2.8 is probably shallow enough, which you'll wuite easily find on a mft f1.4 lens. You don't really see any cinema lenses running anything under f2 anyway! And in this case, everything at f4 is also very nice! lol But for photos, I think there's nothing quite like a nice ful frame 35mm or 50mm f1.8 or f1.4! which is why... i'm really looking at the lumix s5ii~~ the GH7 just launched, I think that is an AWESOME camera. but its kinda like the G9ii anyway.. so i dunno if i want to get that haha the GAS is real.
@@nickalot agreed. Yes the GH7 virtually has it all. For me the G9II has all I need. I have 10 mft lenses including two Leica primes and 4 Olympus f1.8 primes. As you say, you don’t need too much bokeh in video and with the Canon I’m covered for stills. If you have a G9II, I’d get a FF over the GH7 unless you needed something small then S9 or waiting until a GX9II arrives could be the answer.
Look very similar !! I'm very happy to have a G9ii !! (And yes, the skin tone is better on the G9ii)
yeah i'm actually pretty surprised how similar everything is! Am really thinking of getting an S9 for a nice FUN full frame camera haha
