Hey Nick, for your S9, if you don't mind shooting exclusively APS-C crop, checkout the Leica Elmarit TL 18mm f/2.8. It's tiny!
I enjoyed watching your brainstorming, as I've been deliberating over similar topics.
The following is quite long winded, so I wouldn't mind if you ignored the rest of my comment. It's a lot of internal deliberation.
I'm just an amateur hobbyist and I hardly ever share any of my work. Only among close friends.
I've been shooting full frame (Canon 6D with a 35 f/2 prime as my go-to lens) the past 12 years primarily focused on stills and my DSLR is still going strong. I am wanting to take more video to document more of my random BS experiences in life. However I am finding the size of my kit is making an impact on how often I bring my camera out and I'm missing valuable opportunities to document them. My observation is that I don't take advantage of full frame, as the majority of the time I am shooting in daylight, and in low light situations I don't mind noise so much if it has an organic look. Bokeh no longer has the desired look I thought was once professional.
    My aims:
I am looking to downsize my kit.
I want to take more video, continuous PDAF and IBIS are a must.
Keep to a max of 3 lenses.
So I am willing to give up full frame, as I feel the lenses make the most significant impact to the size of your kit.
My general observation of the camera market... is that if you shop among the top 3 (Sony, Canon, Nikon), their APS-C line is lacking and they will all funnel you to purchasing full frame glass in the end. So I already know I am going to avoid these 3. I want to pick a system that has the manufacturer's strong support behind it. I had a particular distain for Sony as I personally don't agree with the ergonomics of their bodies and their image didn't produce desirable skin tones to my eye, lacking firmware updates, pricey and sterile lenses, I could keep going on...
There's Fujifilm with their APS-C line, love their output for stills, love their lens selection, but continuous AF, IBIS, and UI/UX experience leaves room to be desired.
Then there's M43 with Olympus and Panasonic.
I like the output for stills from Olympus and I love their PRO lenses, but their video capability... lets put that aside.
    Which only leaves Panasonic.
I've been eying the GH line since the GH3, but never committed due to lack of PDAF. But I've been admiring their video output. The GH6 really does produce a beautiful image.
When the S5ii came out with PDAF, I knew the time would come when PDAF comes to their next M43 body so I waited. During this time, my partner picked up the S5ii and I was blown away by the continuous AF and image output (12 years using DSLRs so it was a big impact on me). I nearly pulled the trigger on one but remembered I want to avoid FF glass. I also agree aesthetically the Lumix L-mount lenses are rather sterile.
As I am looking to downsize, I was hoping for a GX9/G100 successor with PDAF. Then the G9ii comes out, and specs wise is amazing, but not quite the body form factor I was hoping. Then the S9 comes out, absolutely tiny for FF and the output of which I'm already familiar with (my partner's S5ii). Then out of nowhere the GH7 comes out shortly after.
My problem with the S9 (as yours) there's few compact lens options. It was a mistake for Panasonic to not have the 18-40mm kit lens ready with the S9 release, and to launch a fixed aperture MF lens (26mm f/8 only pancake) to a system that only just recently adopted PDAF really is a joke. So I'd probably wait out the 18-40 and pick the Leica Elmarit TL 18mm f/2.8 (APS-C only and it's absolutely tiny) to pair with the S9, shoot in 4k60p and deal with the crop factor. I wouldn't be taking advantage of the FF sensor for some time though until the 18-40 comes out.
I wouldn't mind testing a more professional body such as GH7. In terms of size, its about the same as my 6D, but at least the lenses will be smaller. I'm aware that the G9ii does a majority of what the GH7 can do and I know I'll never extract it's full potential, but I prefer the ergonomics and the tilt-up screen of the GH7 better. And if one day when a smaller M43 body is released, I think I would rather have a larger gap between the small M43 body and the full sized GH7, rather than a small M43 with the G9ii.
I shoot landscapes, documentary (majority), and sports. When I shoot sports, I don't mind compromising on size too much.
    My options:
First choice: Wait for a GX9/G100 successor. Lenses: 9mm f/1.7, 15mm f/1.7, 35-100 f/2.8 Lumix ver 2 for sports. Save money from buying a GH7 body that I will never take full advantage of. But miss out opportunities to capture video memories until the successor is released and make do with stills from my 6D till then.
Second choice: Get the GH7 now. Lenses: same as above. Later purchase the GX9/G100 successor. Potentially sell the GH7 afterwards as the resale value is not too bad.
Third choice: Get the S9 now. Lenses: 18mm f/2.8 TL Elmarit, 18-40mm (whenever it comes), 28-200mm F/4-7.1 for sports. Might be irrelevant as I'm trying to avoid FF.
I am leaning towards the Second choice, depending when I will be travelling abroad to visit my grandparents. I want to capture those moments. Let me know your thoughts.
    Kind Regards,
    Nathan

Re: arri log, from what they've said, you'll lose mostly highlight details. The base ISO for arri profile is 320 vs 500 for VLOG. I bought an S5iix last year and it's been great. I don't really use 60fps on it. Sometimes I'll go out w/ a GH6 or BMPCC4k and mess around with slow motion. At the end of the day, I think you just have to pick what you want to film. For me it was personal vlogging not meant for public consumption, and 180 shutter angle + 30fps is fine. What I really wanted w/ the S5iix was the low weight. Walking around with a S5iix and 18mm lens is about the same as a GH6 + olympus 8mm fisheye corrected. Of course you can drop more money on something like a Z8 for "do it all"... but with where compute is at, there's pretty much no small and light camera that will do 35mm 60fps+ etc. If the body doesn't get you, the bigass lenses will.

totally agree! i had an a7ii and the a7iii and the lenses were so big, the small compact body was a "lie" hahaha. thanks for sharing your use case for the s5iix! it's actually one of the things i keep self debating on lightweight ff body, beautiful lumix colors, great video ergonomics but apex crop on 60 and no slowmo. but i also keep think if im walking around capturing life's memories (which is what i want a ff for), i probably won't need more than what the s5ii offers.
which is why the S9 is actually also very enticing. since its more or less the s5ii with record limits and lesser ergonomics.
do you find detail loss and moire artefacts on the s5iix? i've heard some people complain about it.

@@nickalot I don't find the S9 appealing at all b/c right now at $1500 it's priced the same with a $350 50mm 1.8 lens as a the S5ii + 50mm 1.8 lens bundle... and you'll want the 50g grip, so then you're talking about zero cost savings, a weight savings of only 190g or ~20%, and you just lose features to save a minor amount of weight b/c the S5ii isn't that heavy. From a whole-system POV, the S5ii/x is pretty great. The 1.8 prime lenses will be at reasonable prices if you buy a bundle around Black Friday. I bought a bundle w/ the S5iix, 50mm1.8, 85mm 1.8, and 18mm 1.8 for ~$283 per lens. Since they all have the same filter thread, I buy one 6-stop ND filter, and then I have bright sun handled w/ a very portable setup. Re: the moire... yes, it is there sometimes. But for me this is a talking head documentary camera. I don't expect it to be artistically perfect. I have no complaints about sharpness or detail. I think if you were going to knock the S-line primes, you'd probably say that they have less contrast wide open than maybe some of the L-mount Leica glass. But they're not as big and heavy as the leica glass, and they have autofocus, which the small m-mount Leica glass does not. But they're also fairly cheap if you buy them in a bundle on sale. I also got the 100mm macro lens to take hiking, and there really isn't a full frame 100mm macro setup that is as compact as what Lumix has right now. If Lumix didn't have the compact primes, it would probably be better to save up for an a7siii or something and just go w/ Sony for the better autofocus. But for a light, reasonably compact setup with excellent ibis for documentary video stuff, I think Panasonic has the best option right now, and then the question is whether you want to stick w/ M43 or go to full frame. For me... I really didn't want to put more money into M43 lenses a year ago when all we had was the GH6 w/ no phase detect autofocus. And $2200 for M43? Bleh. Better from my POV to put my money in full frame glass that will be compatible later with whatever improved full frame bodies they release. I feel M43's only big advantage is eventually just going to be telephoto lens size for bird stuff, and maybe macro. And that's fine... I like macro, it's a valid use case. It's just not my main interest.

@@cornellouis wah! thanks for the insight! i sometimes write long comments on other channels and keep thinking who on earth will spend the time reading it.
but now that i've read your entire comment, i feel i understand why. It's like some random person bothered to take some time outta their day to share stuff with you, it almost feels priceless haha.
thanks again! and yeah, you're right actually... i was swung to the s9 cause it's pretty HAHAHA. but truthfull the s5ii/x is very tempting.
I'm actually considering having an mft/ff setup cause i really enjoy the benefits of both sides. Apsc for me is too middle of the road. i think i might sell the g9ii for the gh7, and start my L-mount journey with the s5iix, and save up for 2026's S1Hiii hahaha.

Hi! Nice hearing from you again! I subscribed to you many years ago so your video appeared in my homepage haha. I actually owned 2 GH6s before I switched to full frame, and it is actually really big and bulky for M43 (its like around the same size & weight as quite a few full frame cameras in the market when i compared them). The main reason I switched was because I was buying the camera to to film myself occasionally, and the GH6 auto focus is really unreliable. Personally i think that auto focus will make filming myself without crew much easier, as I will always be in focus no matter which aperture amount i set. Nice hearing from your perspective and agree with your points!

ehhhh nelson! what's up! hahaha eh! do you still have the gh6??? i had a gh6 too but sold it cause the autofocus was hard to rely on i agree. but, I kinda want it back just for fun lol. The colors on that were super nice!
what full frame you using now?

Since the GH6, each Panasonic camera has some better features, but some become worses ...
GH6 vs GH5 : Better colors, better human tracking (only at 60 and 120fps), better DR at 2000ISO and 4k 120fps, but worse 4k processing and worse AF with Open Gate or below 60fps.
G9II vs GH6 : Better AF, better IBIS, better DR but worse colors, overheating (never experienced) and still worse 4K processing than the GH5.
GH7 vs G9II : Proresraw but still worse colors than GH6 and still worse 4k processing than the GH5 (except in Proresraw I hope).
S5II vs S1 : Better IBIS, better AF but worse video processing. Same sensor, so same limitations like full frame 4K30fps max etc.

      ? G9ii should be compared to G9i and S5ii to S5i

    • @slows728
      @slows728 6 місяців тому

@@JJARCHIE Well, yes to a certain extent, the S5II has much better IBIS than the S5, especially while walking. The gap of IBIS performance between the G9 and G9II is not as huge, while noticeable.
The AF in video is also much better on the S5II compared to the S5, there is a big difference between the G9 and G9II too, even if when using 1 zone the AF of the G9 is still ok and sometimes more accurate than the G9II in good light.
Both the 4K of the S5II and G9II are worse than on the S5 and G9, details are simply not as good. However the 5,7K on the G9II has better output than the 6K of the S5II in good light, the image in 5.7K is very close to the 4K of the G9. However in low light, the G9II has much less noise than the G9 but the details are more altered.

these days panasonic seems to me upgrading sensors in old computers (camera body), and then putting the old sensor in new computers(camera body), g9ii sensor with gh6 computer, in s5ii body.
g9ii sensor in gh6 body, with new computer gh7 hahaha
