The high A Freddie hits mixes when Brian hits the same note on the guitar. It is one of the coolist things ever heard, Also Roger was singing towards the end as well
It was recorded in Montreux studio after some long dinners, they were more under vodka than under pressure, it was not planned colaboration, they were good friends
I'd be very interested in hearing some 80's Freddie. His voice on the A Kind Of Magic single is wasted on that song, lots of cool raspiness in the higher registers.
They'll never be another two artists like these beautiful men. The word musical genius gets thrown around today like nothing, but you can't use it enough when talking about Mercury and Bowie, true artists in every sense of the word and I will forever love and miss them both.
I saw a John Denver interview when he talked about meeting Pavarotti. One of the things Pavarotti told him was he tried to sound like what he was singing about. "So when I sing about clouds, my voice sounds like clouds". That's what I get from Bowie. Really comes through on Let's Dance.
A Bowie documentary i watched said they wrote lyrics as they recorded. They did the whole song in one night with the help of cocaine. Might explain the pitch issues lol.
I have read that they recorded the vocals separately without letting the other one hear the take. Though David snuck in at one point to listen to some of Freddys.
I was first introduced to David Bowie through Labyrinth and it took me years to realize he was an actual singer and that the style he sang in Labyrinth was vastly different to his albums.
Legends who are missed! Watched a video the other day on how they made this song. They had no ideas other that John Deacons bass line and went into separate rooms to record ideas and weren’t aloud to hear each others work. You we’re pretty much spot on with your analysis 😎
Have always loved the emotion in this song. It has brought tears for me. I love both singers' styles and uniqueness. They both exude genuine caring and love to me. I would chose this over Mariah Carey any day. Sorry.
Aren't it the little irritating notes that makes those kind of songs so special? I think you are absolutely right when you say that DB is a character singer I just love his voice..
I am the lucky owner of Ken Templin's course and it helped me a lot in my career. But this Isolated vocals series is soo cool, it's special. Along with very useful information it gives a lot to a self-confidence. After all, our idols are humans too, imperfect, struggling with their voices too. And the magic about their music is also a result of a huge work of sound-engineers, band etc. Thank you, Ken, for this series. I hope it continues, I adore it!
The two of them were great.....but Freddie even done opera singing ...a mean c'mon what other rock and roll singer could do that ..his voice really was something else ..great video as always 👍
Steve Perry, I believe. Right, Ken? He was a rare countertenor- a tenor altino, though not as many octaves as Freddie as FM was a natural baritone. SP's voice was effortlessly high with a beautiful tone. That heavy touring wrecked his delicate instrument a bit, but man, that 71 year old SP is still kicking a**!
Hey Ken! Once again two of the best of all time now singing in The Ultimate Band looking down on us. Freddie and David are so missed, but now entertaining the everlasting audience.😇😇😇
OMG!!!! I loved this vídeo !!! Pretty cool!!! Thank you!!! Freddie Mercury and David Bowie are sensational, amazing, unique... I love both two, but David Bowie and his British accent is my passion. Even my daughter loves him. The king of labyrint. Thank you Ken for this amazing vídeo. You are the best vocal coach.
My favourite song ever. Marc Martel did a brilliant lockdown version where all the band members were in separate locations. Marc sounds like Freddie & a guitarist/vocalist that sounds just like Bowie. Closest thing to the actual recording. Thanks Ken.
Yes, I was just thinking the same, Ken knows all the singers, all the melodies all the music genre's and how they weave together over generations. Thanks again Ken!
WOW!! These isolated vocals are amazing like you mentioned on the analysis, not perfect but they mesh so nicely with reverbs and obviously the music makes this song so epic! I think is one of the best duet in Rock History, I can't come up with one that can beat this one!!
Ken. Thank you for this. In the 1970's there weren't that many music videos but I remember well when this song came out and the video of these two recording together was very interesting. "A singer is only a singer because they have the courage to be one." HAH!! I chuckled at that but it is sooo true. I grrw up in an environment where people feasted on each other's souls with a never ending barrage of snarky comments meant to completely destroy any self esteem. After leaving the area and creating esteem I found the courage to sing in public. Thanks Ken.
I love the story about how both David and Freddie were nervous and competitive while recording this song, which is my favorite song . I love your analysis. Would it be accurate to say that Freddie is a technical singer in general? My uneducated opinion is that he's one of the best singers of all time. What do you think?
I’m not really sure I ain’t on board with the description of Bowie as a character singer except maybe in the specific performance I guess. His tenor on some of his songs is just beautiful.
From what I understand, the two artists did do some of it free-verse fashion. David and Freddie went into their respective recording booths and just grooved to whatever they happened to be thinking about at the moment. (There was also some alcohol and cocaine involved beforehand as well but I cannot remember which one was more smashed at the time.)
@@kentamplin I don't know how old you are but I'm almost at my 60s and nothing compares Fred's kinda "control" over a crowd like him... I saw him at 80s here in Brazil... Morumbi Stadium... That was a mesmerising stuff. I will NEVER forget it.

That’s a great song to go through, Ken! I suggest that you do another duet that is not as famous, because the song was never released. There are actually two or three songs that were recorded, but the one I would love to see you dissect is State Of Shock, sung and recorded by Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson. Of course, the final version was released with Mick Jagger, but I would love for you do the one with Freddie. Keep up the great work!
It was David Bowie's idea, they were both recording in the same studio somewhere in Europe, forget where. Bowie thought they should do something. John Deacon started playing a bass line on something they were jamming on and they broke to grab a meal, when they went back to the studio Bowie mentioned the bass line, john deacon didn't remember what he played, so Bowie showed it too him, more or less, it wasn't quite the same but they went with it. Apparently Bowie took over the session and was quite the task manager. Considering the popularity of the track at a time when Queen was stagnant and Bowie (as those of us who were around back then will remember) was a massively successful recording artist with the album Let's Dance, it was great timing for Queen who regain success after their performance at Live Aid. The super high falsetto parts are queen drummer Roger Taylor.
Also how Bowie and Freddy went into the booth separately and just vocalized whatever they felt before the lyrics were written. Freddy doing the scatting kinda thing stayed in the song. He's just freestyling. Not trying to concentrate on the key. You think if he was going to disect the song he would read the history first.

Hi that was a fascinating vocal analysis x The "Caring about ourselves" unusual harmonies very interesting to listen to that .that would be tricky to do .But just brilliant to hear.
16:23 Wow, Ken! Thank you for explaining the harmony they do near the end of the song. It really makes a difference hearing it as a solo track. I like to sing harmony to most rock songs as I'm driving or just listening; and that part has always thrown me off. I could never get it right. Now I'm wondering if I was getting it right the whole time, but didn't understand the harmony they were doing, because it was dissonant. You're right, it's like they didn't want it to sound all sweet and nice. They wanted to leave you with some tension or anxiety, to reflect the songs main theme, being under pressure. Thanks again, this was a really neat discovery for me.
😂 Melodramatic Freddie! Love that 💕 I heard that Freddie wanted to “out sing” Bowie in the studio! 😂😂 Is it true? I know they were stoned in the session!

Being that it's still somewhat popular, maybe in a slightly cultish sense, I put it in the 'acquired taste' category. Bless him. If the poor darling had lived longer, I would hope he would've changed that approach . Poor David, that is what probably took him too soon. Smoking and cancer. So damn sad.
To sing beside Freddie Mercury and not pale by comparison. Think of how tall an order that is. Bowie was a monster singer. Bob Clearmountain says the best male singer he's ever recorded. Their voices in unison blend incredibly well.
Under Pressure just shows how great Freddie Mercury was. David was great too. R.I.P. both of them.
They are certainly missed.

Glad you enjoyed it, ben ben!
Thanks for pointing that out... I thot Ken would know it's Roger Taylor singing that part.
SMOKING AND DRINKING , The Mercury School of singing.
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Bless him. If the poor darling had lived longer, I would hope he would've changed that approach . Poor David, that is what probably took him too soon. Smoking and cancer. So damn sad.
I love this song 🎵 i enjoy hearing these lessons 👏😍👍
On 16:23 from ( caring about ourselves, this is our last dance) I think that was Roger Taylor who was doing the backing vocals...
Rock on!
i just wanna hear you talk about every singer hahaha, awesome!
To sing beside Freddie Mercury and not pale by comparison. Think of how tall an order that is. Bowie was a monster singer. Bob Clearmountain says the best male singer he's ever recorded. Their voices in unison blend incredibly well.
Rock on!
Ken...I am obsessed with these. Consider Annie Lennox.... Thanks!
Rock on!
I watch this purely for the entertainment value you offer, lol, makes me laugh. Thank you!
Great video Ken, thanks a lot. That thing is a masterpiece in creative reverb placement!
