Please do not finish this Queen-athon ! There a still Queen gems to be analysed 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻 Funny thing : I think that his stuffiness had positively impacted the uniqueness of his timber.
Freddie probably didn't realize that this song would be played worldwide at every sporting event. That's insane, it's like he wrote an anthem for the world lol.
I always found Freddie’s unpolished vibrato was so unique to his voice. It really gave him this vulnerable yet powerful sound. Delicate and true. Sometimes uniqueness is polished away by too much proper technique. Love your work Ken and just started your course!🙌🏼
Who doesn´t like this song? It ´s for everyone. The first song which was written by Freddie for the participation of the crowd was In The Laps Of The Gods. The live version from Hammersmith Odeon in London 1976 is beautiful, Freddie is so passionate and mesmerizing here, I love it. Thanks for your Queen reactions, great job
I love this song, because Freddie was sticking it to all the doubters, the music media, and the music snobs, who just didn't get their music or couldn't put them in a box. I feel he includes us fans as Champions too, because some back then, thought we were kind of weird for being Queen fans. Love it.
He was not just a singer but a VOCAL MIRACLE (as well as an extraordinary man). That's why Queen is our first inspiration and we dedicated several songs to them and him. Great job Ken and we still love you, Freddie. 👑💛❤💚💙
I enjoy your videos of these Queen songs. I guess something that is worth considering is that Freddie wasn't vocally trained, he developed his singing style himself, and in my view, that actually is the fact that made his sound so unique (along with his natural tone/range), as I've heard numerous classically trained vocalists sing Queen songs and they may be technically perfect, but they lack the emotion, impact, or distinctiveness of Freddie's vocal. The magic is often in the imperfections.
It's gotta be said that the entire band (minus the bassist John) were really decent singers! Excellent harmonies! Brian and Roger's solo Queen songs are really good too! My favourites of each member are: Roger - Drowse Brian - Sail Away Sweet Sister
He without a doubt was one of the greatest performers ever!!!! Where he could get every one in the crowd interact with him! His songs will Always live on ! He was just amazing person and the rest of the band queen was one the most unique bands in there songs with the opera sections n still rock n roll amazing n amazing job ken love the breakdown of the song 🎵
In my opinion, nasality is just part of what makes his voice great. He was not a trained singer after all and truthfully I can barely detect a nasal sound. Love how Freddie’s diction is so clear both vowels and consonants of the sung word can be heard. I would happily listen to more Freddy or Steve Perry vocal tracks. Earlier for music by Freddy and, older stuff, around the time of “Sun Shines Grey”, for Steve Perry. Good review Ken.
Bro there is no one I mean no one like you who can break it down and keep it so real. I so appreciate this I already sent this to my 83 year old dad. He digs u bro. thanx
I can sing this very well in our karaoke. I listen his song almost everyday. I listen verywell his everywords pronunciation and nose congestion. As a filipino. Music is life😁
Also Sir check out Queen - The Fairy Fellers Master-Stroke, I think this is one of the most craziest and interesting Queen songs in terms of vocals and music! Your thoughts are very important on this one!
You're absolutely right, back in the days Freddie had a lot of problems with his vocal cords due to a lack of technique. It took years before he mastered his voice.
Excellent job on breaking down the song. You know your stuff and your background backs it up. Singer, Guitarist, composer, vocal coach, producer and more? Impressive! I totally agree with you that there is no coinsidence when it comes to that "taunting" melody in here. Brian has said several times that he is confident about Queen's catalogue because every song is so worked through. They experimented a lot before landing the version they thought worked best.
Some interesting things I have read about Freddy from various scientific study and analysis of his voice. I dont know if you mention it in this video as I havent watched it all yet but you have mentioned before how people think some singers are tenors but actually are high baritones ( such as yourself :) ). I read the same about Freddy in an analysis some european vocologists ( i guess thats the term for those who study voice ). The analysis was pretty comprehensive given the fact that it was done after he died. They measured interviews and determined his median speaking frequency. They filmed at a very high frame rate his larynx movement. all kinds of things. The most interesting was the frequency range and speed of his vibrato. it mentioned that illustrating the mathematical sine value of what would be a perfect vibrato would be a value of 1. Luciano Pavarotti for instance has very close to that. Mercury vibrato would have a sine value of .57. Which they said meant he was vibrating his vocals in ways other sings do not. They said he was vibrating ventricular folds along with regular vocal folds to produce a subharmonic vibrato in the same way Tuvan throat singers do. Also his vibrato frequency range was over 7hz and the average classically trained singer had a 4-6hz vibrato range.
This is such a popular song by queen Ken Freddie mercury sung it great and he is awesome a lot of people love him he did it great Freddie has his own style as well he was different I didn't notice he was congested and sounded like he had a cold when he is singing his vibrato is fast and jerky sounding but he got through it great always liked this song but anyways great video and great at explaining ken👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

brilliant analysis Ken of what some call the relationship between theory and practice. The more authority we gain over the "language" of the music (technical authority), the more freedom we have to be creative when sharing the music. And, oh yes, too much business these days cancelling the art of music with the commodification of the music. Have you considered analyzing some of the great women jazz singers? Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Deedee Bridgewater, Carmen McRae, etc
After SMGO this is another song with multitracks available which displays much more then Freddie's vocals the guitar work is epic, a duet between Freddie and the Red Special.
Huge fan of QUEEN AND Freddy. I think part of today’s problem - even though it’s also a positive in many ways- is just how FAR technology HAS come ; where they put friggen auto tune or treatment on EVERY voice. I think it's interesting that the nasality creates its own sort of compression, I think it's actually similar to lip rolling at limiting the air speed over the vocal chords, it feels similar to singing into a empty bottle of water. You almost have to sing like Freddy to ease the transition of the notes, a least in my own experience, I had to widen my vowels and consonants more than usual.

Ken back in those days didn't these bands always have a doctor at hand that would give singers the ( shot ) which helped clear up them being congested? Also Freddy also had somewhat of a speech impediment from his front teeth being severely bucked & overlapped which he always seemed to be swallowing when he gave interviews and I believe that was the real reason why Freddy near his rise was not giving interviews period .
