Bentonville has a reputation for being the flow trail capital of the world but truth be told, there's a LOT of tech riding as well. I recently went to the Bentonville Bike Festival and while I was there I got to check out an awesome trail with my good friend Lance Trappe. Come along along for the ride and check out a rad trail!

Great video, as always! It's definitely not new...been there since 2018, and it was originally called "Prenup" prior to being renamed "Here's Johnny" after one of the Coler family members, Johnny Coler. They re-worked some of the wooden structures not too long ago and added the metal for traction. Unfortunately, some of the optional "high lines" that were the diciest, got overgrown and went back to nature (one was at the 7:17 mark to the left). You didn't get to experience the full difficulty of when it was first opened, but you would have aced it...no problem.
It's interesting that you rode it CW, because we typically ride it CCW. I think overall, it's maybe a little easier to try to "no dab" going CW, because the three really steep punchy parts are downhill, rather than uphill. But...the biggest challenge to "no dab" it...is the fitness requirement to clear all the punchy parts, and it's got climbing regardless of direction.
Where you stopped at the 8:47 mark...I was nervous, because for two straight years, there was a yellow jacket nest right there to the right of the trail from where you're standing!! We were on a group ride there once, and we looked like that scene from "Tommy Boy." SAVE YOURSELVES...as we were running to get away! One guy got stung BETWEEN THE EYES!
I'm sure some of those pedal strike marks you were seeing early on were from people blitzing that coming down it, because under compression some of those holes in the rocks can surprise people. They raced the end of it in an Enduro a few years back, and there was some yardsale carnage on those rocks at the end!
Wow Charles, you may be the only one that remembers that original name. Definitely insider info there!
Thanks for all that info!!
@@bbrennfo ....Haha, yeah man....we rode that thing the second we had permission, and that was the name at that time. But, I cheated and got a reminder when I searched my UA-cam channel for "Coler," because that original video came up with "Esther's Loop and "Pre Nup" in the title. I'd post the link for it, but it has Willie Nelson's "Whiskey River" playing in the background (Why did I do that?), and I don't want it to cause a strike on Jeff's channel...not cool. But you can find it on my channel if you search Coler there. The trail looked a lot different, and it was a little wet that day....which makes that trail REALLY dicey!!
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss ....I guess it's really kinda meaningless other than the locals who read it, but I really like that trail and wish it got more traffic. It's just physically demanding compared to most of our other trails, so people shy away from it. A mile there...feels like 3 on our other trails! You know...you've ridden here quite a bit now!
Did you go check out the new "Zone 4" tech climbing trail at Handcut Hollow while you were here? It's ridiculously hard...Kenny Bealey can probably no dab it when it's dry, but he had to dab quite a bit when he tried it. He had XC tires and it was wet though....so I think it's doable from a technical standpoint for a trials rider, but fitness-wise...not sure there's anyone alive who wouldn't have to track stand several times to catch their breath! Grueling.
If you didn't...now you have another excuse to come back to ride here. Maybe when it's not 104 though, like it was today!!
@@willbros1499 some day I'll tell you why we named it that!
I did this trail with an ebike not so long ago and I remember falling down to the rocks (a couple of times). Really impressive to see these guys make it with normal bikes and without falling!!!
It's definitely not the direction I take, but you guys are beasts. Great trail.
One of my favorite trails in Bentonville! 👌Nice riding guys.
It's not raining, it's the sweat .
You guys are the best MTB team ever...thanks for video it's great 👍
THIS LOOKS SOOO TUFF.... you guys have endurance to do that tech in the humidity ...BRAVO
"Let's go up the hard way, for sure." The whole way is the hard way. Especially backwards. I commiserate about the heat -- we had the same further north.
High humidity is my arch nemesis. Good vid!
Super awesome to watch as usual... I love these tech trails. Cheers!
That was awesome to watch! What a wild tech trail! You guys are tough!
That is a great trail 👍
Gotta put this one on the list, looks amazing! Love the edit🤙🔥
Pretty amazing riding, especially with the weather! I was really impressed with the trail. It was a combination of engineered and primitive. Those elevated lines were really well made!
Another awesome video. Love it. 👍🤙
Sick. Beautiful rock slab berms. 👍
We hit that in May going in the same direction. The rocks were slick and there was water in some of the gullies. We are use to the tech trails of New England (Nam, Ames Nowell and Lynn Woods) but that trail kicked out ass, in a good way. What a blast.
Man your UPhill efforts are borderline sadistic! I start sweating just watching your videos! LOL 🤣 I wonder if the average rider realizes the technical prowess of yours and Lance's uphill climbing skills. 🤙
Great job on a hard trail! Mid September thru November is the sweet spot for riding around Bentonville. Temp is just right and humidity is a non-issue.
That shit totally kicked my ass in May when it was much cooler. You guys are truly bosses! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for checking it out
you guys impressed the hell out of me. I've ridden some of this trail and I cant ride near as much as you guys
You guys made that look easy! Awesome video!
Awesome work 👏
Great vid as usual. Any chance of a collab w Rich Drew? That would be cool to watch.
Impressive riding both. Some of those features look so tricky!
Just rode this in similar conditions today, y’all made it look easy! I wish I had gone yesterday when the high was barely 80.
You guys are crazy, but I like it! Jeff, you have to make a stop in Stowe, VT and ride the new trail called "Serenity & Adrenaline". It has some super skinny ladders with a triple teeter, big skinny rollers, a wallride, and some steep rock rolls.
Making it look so easy!! Though the sweat on the lens was gross, we have all been there😝. You're The Boss!
It looks like you're both soaked in the rain, even your camera lens is showing it. Thanks Jeff and Johnny for showing us the trail. Happy ending, sitting on the cool water though.
Super cool, or hot rather! I just live not far from there and we've been riding some but it's been just too damn hot. I'll have to give that a try the next time I'm there.
Nice riding, and no E-assist too.
I typically have the same wrong direction issue when taking Trailforks suggestions when discovering trails, very annoying, but oh well.
Let’s make it more tech 🤘🏽
Very scary
Welcome to Arkansas if you don't like the weather then just hang around for a bit it will change lol . awesome video.
I have to get out there!
Almost looks like it is raining…sweat pouring in front of the camera. LOL.
i love watching things ill never probably accomplish in my lifetime lol
Awesome trail! Makes ya sweat a little 🤣
Great ride, you made that look smooth! Would love to see you guys Tackle the trail, Zone 4 on the Oz Trails. It is supposed to be the hardest climb there. Saw a video with Hans Rey at the bike fest attempting it (on an ebike though, with Loam wolf). Cleaned a lot, but not all.
We tried. It was 97 degrees and humid. Definitely a winter time attempt
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss I definitely want to see you on that one! Great video!
how does lance get so many days off from tenfly?😆 I rode ringwood today.. the heat and humidity are off the charts here too
nice
I think you meant to say "reeb-diculous". 😆
You went the wrong way just like I did, 😂😂there is a video on my channel too🤘🏽
Imagine the trail builders work...
The decking is really cool, but exists for no apparent reason. And a lot of the rock sections look like they were bought from Home Depot. Is it over engineered, or are they chronically under utilizing the terrain? Not sure after watching this. If I ever go there it will be for the flow, and maybe try that trail in the other direction.
lol
Definitely not a new trail. I've ridden it a few times over the last few years; both directions. Never see anybody else on it though...
Not a new trail. My first ride on it was over 3 years ago.
What? Where's the tech? Meticulously placed rock hops.... definitely a flow trail builder's idea of tech. "...and a ledge step-up feature Here... aaaand lets put one Right Here and drop another Over There". No hate on you guys, but damn, engineering "tech" on this scale just gives me the creeps. Are there no backcountry style hiking trails with rocks, roots, off camber sections, tight twists, longer climbs, etc in Bentonville?
No. Everything is fabricated
@@JeffLenoskyTrailBoss hahaha right on, ok. Well you guys are rad even if the whole scene is sad to a grumpy old dude like me
@@nomadtrails I'm pretty serious! Everything is built... like Disneyland. It's a fun place to visit but it's not totally my cup of tea.
We managed to find some decent tech trails, hand cut hollow and Devil’s Den south of town. Still worth the trip.
Don't use trailforks, use MTB Project.
You guys were supposed to go the opposite way you guys are going up the mountain not down the mountain you're supposed to go down
I'll never go to Arkansas to mountain bike lol. Definitely not the capital of mountain biking.
You'd be surprised at the variety of trails. Slaughter Pen and Coler Park are a blast. You want to go big, they got it. Tech, they got it. Great maintained trails, etc. Most the DH trails are 1-3 minutes (limited elevation). But, northwest Arkansas is still a great place to ride & the communities are all about MTBing. Great vibes. I hit up Arkansas for a week this year and it was a blast. Not saying it's the capitol but I'm definitely going back.
I live an hour away from Bentonville. It’s a great place to ride for folks of all levels. I know the “MTB Capital of the World” moniker rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but it was basically just a marketing move by the city to get folks to talk about theIr trails (and it seems to have worked) Whether you like the name or not, I guarantee you’d find plenty of trails up your alley and a thriving MTB community with high levels of stoke.
I aspire to ride in Squamish, and Moab and do lift serviced terrain in the rockies some day. I totally get how folks from those places would roll their eyes at Arkansas, but I’ve met people from all over the country (including people from the Rockies) on the OZ trails and aside from 1 outlier, they were all having a great time. The year round riding is one of the nicest aspects, high elevation tends to make that impossible in a lot of places.
@@arryq Growing up in Cincinnati, then moving to Colorado Springs in 2013 let me know what real mountain biking is. And I still ride all year long in Colorado, just not the high elevation trails. Snow and different seasons add character to the trails, every year the trails are different. Then there's all the lift parks, most have 30 minute downhill runs. Colorado also has the most miles of MTB trails out of any state.
@@RealMTBAddict I’m really hoping to get out there and do some riding someday, but with 3 kids in the house and a limited budget (just made the move to a [used] full suspension after riding for a couple of years) it’s pretty amazing to have the 300-500 miles of trail in NWA just an hour away. Glad you love riding in the mountains and hope that if you’re ever this way you take the opportunity to ride some of the OZ trails. I’m sure you wouldn’t love them like you love the ones in CO, but I’m pretty sure you’d have a smile on your face!
@@RealMTBAddict .....We have some riders who have moved here from CO, and prefer this type of riding, so it's not unheard of, and it's about accessibility, time, and variety for them. Sure, they miss the long climbs followed by long descents at times, but they still go visit and do that.
What's cool here is...you can go smash laps on "Park Style" trails for an hour and cut up with your buddies, or head out on a long XC ride....right from your garage. For people with kids and limited time, they sometimes don't have the ability to rack their bike, drive a ways, climb for 2 hours, and then descend for 40 minutes.
If you're into lift assist, then it's not going to be for those riders. We do have shuttled DH runs about an hour away, but they're shorter runs...in the 3-4 minute range. But there's a lot crammed in there!
None of the locals care anything about that marketing claim. We just try to help direct visitors to the style of trails they like, and ride our bikes. :-)
