Guided by Voices - Gold Star For Robot Boy (soundcheck) - 18/March/94

- Here's the other song from the 18/March/94 Hara Arena soundcheck (Pimple Zoo was first). Contrary to earlier reports, this was not bassist Dan Toohey's last show with GbV. He would play one more show with them a month later. Also, the gent in the background (maroon shirt; to Mitch's right) is future GbV guitarist, Nate Farley, who was doing guitar tech duties that night.
For similar GbVness, look into the wonderfully stitched-together Bob Pollard DVD, "The Devil Went Home and Puked," available for purchase online at rockathonrecords.com/video.html.
Respect to Mitch for going hard even during soundcheck. I know he was probably doing it for this 2021 clout, but it's still really cool.
To be fair he's playing one note the whole time
@@hope_canyonAll the more reason to bow before the sheer rock and roll purity of Mitch Fucking Mitchell. ❤
Great music makes you do that. I get into that mode to when I enjoy what I’m playing no matter the situation
LOL at Bob drinking a beer at sound check. GBV!
Always
indie rock peaked here
Why didn't this band BLOW UP in 94 playing music this good?
Idk they were pretty popular, especially compared to other bands that were considered their peers. Pavement was probably the only 90s indie band that sold more records than GBV
Too lofi tbh
They didn’t play the corporate bullsht game or do coke
They didn’t play the corporate bullsht game or do coke
They didn’t play the corporate BJ game or do coke
this sounds cleaner than the album version
thanksgiving pfp
I can watch this clip every day and never get sick of it
For only $55,000 those drums could be yours!
high key hope they work past that whole mess lmao
@@Lanooski i second that, the old lineup was so tight
sick collection of sweaters on display by all involved
This is one of many songs noel Gallagher wishes he had written and I mean that most sincerely folks
Gotta love Bob's shirt. Most unassumingly dressed musical genius ever.
My God they make absolutely perfect rock ‘n roll look so effortless. Keep in mind this was just a sound check.
I know GBV still exists and they still put out new music, but they’re not writing songs like this anymore unfortunately.
I really try to dig their new stuff but it just doesn’t captivate me the way all these gems from the 90’s did. Alas, it is what it is, as they say.
That's ex-"Manager For Life", Pete Jamison, at the beginning, and that's future GbV guitarist, Nate Farley (in the hat & maroon shirt) acting as guitar tech.
This is absolutely magnificent. Thanks for sharing this.
Cosby sweata, Caawsby sweataa!
In case you hadn't noticed, there's some ROCK happening, as well!
where to cop that sweater?
When Bob raids Bill Cosby's wardrobe.
Toby looks so young!
Uncle Bob's sweater here is gorgeous!
Their album songs have this level of sound quality lol. Gotta love gbv for that
@grantmills4184: Well, yeah, maybe back in the day, but they've been more mid-fi for a long time now. It didn't help that I was standing in front of Tobe's LOUD guitar amp while I was shooting that clip!
@@lumpytwangage you’re the one that filmed this? That’s actually pretty cool, and I’m sure standing in front of the amp didn’t help haha. And yeah I guess their earlier albums were a little rougher in terms of production
I've been listening to the album version and autoplay took me straight to this afterwards and I was just thinking the same thing lol
Unreal
This is still amazing! "Lumpy Approved!"
right on man
Mitch.
Thats it.
Thats the comment.
ahhh...good ole Hara Arena
What's with the progressive metal drum set? LOL
Kevin Fennels a pretty weird guy. But to answer your question, he and Mitch (guitar player on left) were in a thrash/hardcore band together during the brief GBV hiatus after Propeller. Definitely some 80s metal sensibilities in that drum
Sound
"That sounds good don't it?" 1:52
wall of drums
I didn't know Michael Cera was in Guided By Voices!
Does Bobs Sweater still have a price tag?
Gbv is the Gbe (greatest band ever)
...is that Neil Pert's drumset?
POV that’s your job
Who was on the bill?
New Bomb Turks, Guided by Voices, Afghan Whigs, and The Breeders.
@@lumpytwangage That is a crazy lineup. In 1994 the Whigs were the only band to rival GbV for best band in the world. Both supporting peak-era Breeders... amazing.
