Yeah I’ve turned to a PRS guy after getting a knackered 02 McCarty for cheap. It’s a killer even though the action isn’t as low as my gibby. The DC shape makes it beat the gibby by miles tho.
Since you asked us to comment so politely, Over the decades I have found the best way to test an electric guitar is unplugged in the corner by yourself, the quieter the better. I play a few scales, the bar cord and then a few licks. What I want to hear is how loud is the guitars natural voice. Does the neck and body vibrate with the strings or is it stone dead. Next I feell the neck, is it too small for me, it is comfortable. Pick ups, frets tuners bridges can all be replaced and or upgrades, by a dead playing quiet guitar there is just nothing you can do to change that, it's the wood, and you best to put it back on the wall and move on. I have bought guitars that I just so wanted to work out with me, in the end, I sold then all off. What I look for is a guitar that [[plays alive, and the sympathetic vibrations match with me.It hard to put into words, but if you play one that is a match, you will know it, and that is the one to get.
Thank you for your comment. Except the fact of materiel and look, it's a matter of feeling. I'm a beginner (a French one 😉) and I'm already passionnate by playing the guitar. It's why your comment suits me. Have a great day. Daniel.
The first thing I do with any guitar is strum the open strings while it's hanging on the wall (allowing it's in tune, of course). the standard tuning of a guitar is not the most musical sound in the world IMO, and if a guitar sounds good just hanging on the wall, there's a good chance it'll sound good when you take it down, and a good chance it'll sound good when you plug it in.
@Bobby Murphy I think 1 out of every 100 "cheap" guitars comes off the line in amazing shape and plays/sounds like a much pricier guitar. I've been fortunate to find a couple like that and upgrade the electronics for fractional cost of a high end guitar.
I went into Guitar Center yesterday and they had this. I have wanted it for years. I could NOT believe how great it is and I bought it! This is far better than my Gibson Studio deluxe II. Try one of these! 899 here in the US. And worth every penny! BTW I had to look up Zach Myers. I guess I am "Turning into a PRS boy".
I love my Zach Myers. Mine may be a 2014 but I still love it. Even though I may never play again because of an injury I will probably never get rid of it. That blue is pretty though.
Got that same model as my first PRS a few days ago. I'm VERY impressed at how great it plays and sounds! It played and sounded a lot better than a Gibson SG '61 Reissue that I used to have.
I'm an old guy with too many guitars but my SE's are among the most played. Mine are wide/thin which felt perfect first time I touched it. Can't imagine what a top shelf PRS must be like - probably will never know since I can't justify $4K for one guitar. Guess I could sell the SE's, but I like having several cheaper ones that I like - a lot - rather than one expensive one.
@@danielsorensen2478 I hear ya. Uff, complex subject! Disclaimer/apology: cluttering up Mary's comments with yak. I'm a hobbyist, have only ever played music in friends setting. Do, and have, known many gigging musicians. Pre-pandemic, acquiring a $4.5K guitar was doable for a large number of people, in some way - trading ,selling, credit etc. In the 70's I bought a Les Paul Recording, on credit, from a local music store (those were the days!) An outrageous expenditure, for me, of $750. In my hometown, Roswell, in the 80's, I knew guys making $400 a week playing in a bar - and were easily worth it - packed the place. They did alright because they had day jobs, IF you could go 8 to 5 everyday, then 8PM to 2AM everyday!!! It died and has never returned. The local people (pre-pandemic) who still gig are lucky if they get $25 per now. Same with people I know who gig in a much more vibrant East Coast area. They may make some money here and there, but you know. Now, the 2 decades of FANTASTIC guitars at CHEAP prices - better than the Beatles had! Most of my stuff is $500 to $800 because that is an easy bite-size, tax refund purchase. Still more than I can justify. My more heavily gigging East Coast friends, and the pros like Mary, Pete Thorn, RJ Ronquillo, Rhett Shull, Henning Pauly - well heck yeah! I might still, someday, sell off everything and downsize quantity etc to buy a $4k PRS, but there's a WHOLE LOT of priorities in front of it - especially when guitars like the one she demos here are so good. I mean, what percentage of YT subscribers to all these channels make their living entirely from performing music? Versus how many weekend warriors and hobbyists who just want to hear a pro's experience and perspective? So for most of us, $4.5K is neither sensible nor practical.
@Bud Dee Well, you know, I COULD buy an expensive PRS or any other model. But I can't justify it - especially now with everything so crazy. You're right about used. The one "expensive" guitar I own (at least to me) is a Gretsch MIJ. Is there a higher quality feel/experience etc? Yeah, most definitely. There is something to be said for owning, playing, and enjoying an expensive, well-made guitar. My Gretsch was slightly used, like new really, and yeah it is special. BUT ... unless you're a pro, it's a luxury item. And even if you ARE a pro, it is a scale of diminishing returns. There are PLENTY of pro quality guitars in the $1500 to $2K range. $3500 and up and my brain just says "EXCESS! What are you thinking? Like you're Joe Bonamassa, or even Rhett Shull? SHUT IT DOWN!"
For me: 1 - Build quality 2 - Feel (I play totally random up and down the neck). If it doesn't feel good that's the end 3 - Sound (I play notes and chords with different settings) 4 - Joy (only now do I play actual music and see if it brings joy to my heart)
I've been really impressed with how good the more affordable PRS SE and the S2 ranges are. That new Zach Myers looks amazing and is very tempting to me!
Whenever trying a new guitar, the most productive thing to do is to AB it vs another guitar that you already know well. If you're in a guitar store and you don't have your own guitar, just pick a guitar that is most like your own, the same model if they have that, and compare the two. Once you have at home a guitar that you really dig, you'll find that comparisons with it disqualify lots of new guitars that look really attractive at first glance. It's a good money-saving strategy.
Beautiful guitar, great video! I got my Zach Myers a few weeks ago and I could not be happier! The neck is not as "fat" as I thought it would be, to be honest... but the looks and the sound are definitely from a more expensive guitar! Agree 100% with you on that. And about your question, I also go for the clarity of the sound when plugged in, both clean and dirty sounds. And the frets, yes! That's a major thing. If you feel the "blades" when running your hand through the neck, forget it.
This guitar looks stunning! definitely a keeper! I recently bought a new PRS SE Custom 22 after like 4-5 years of musical retirement and guitar (long story) and these SE's are absolutely a BLAST for the money!
I just bought this guitar mint condition showroom model for $680. Whatever they are doing in Indonesia.. keep it up. The guitar is excellent. And no need IMO to change these pick ups. They scream very nicely. It hold tune well. I have zero complaints.
What i look for when buying a guitar are a couple of things- playability , it has to be easy on the guitarist. Tone/resonance , has to sound good. Production- if it’s something i can pick up any time I may hold off for a bit vs a limited edition that I’d be more inclined to buying it right then and there. Vintage is a plus
Mary you are way beyond me in every way but I added PRS se Zach Myers guitar on my tiny channel partly from your video and PRS demo..been fantastic year now. Love it gigs or studio. Your entire channel is terrific keep on. Thank you
Choosing a new instrument is an ethereal experience. A new instrument has to speak to your soul. Like the Magical world of Harry Potter, the Instrument chooses the player. If that connection between the two doesn't click... it isn't going to work, no matter how hard you work with it. That guitar is absolutely gorgeous. Sound is fantastic. This instrument belongs in your collection Mary.
Have you considered the PRS Hollowbody ii with Piezo? I would of thought a fantastic instrument for you - like a 335 but smaller more comfortable body and the LRBaggs Piezo can be run separately or blended in on top of the magnetics. Being hollow, its also light as well and you get 2 F-Holes. The ZM Signature is a great guitar and PRS certainly have a great range of models at all price points.
Beautiful guitar. I got one in 2016, trampas green. I love it. The neck is really nice. Starting to learn guitar in my late 50's I really like the light weight. My back has many years of snow shoveling. Hope you enjoy it.
Great guitar. I have an older one in "Trampas Green." I amazes me what PRS can do at such a low price point. I have higher end guitars but I play this one and record with it just as often, and the playing experience is equally great as when I'm on one of my higher end Fenders or Gibsons. Kudos to PRS SE.
It would appear we both have a love for our PRS's ... except I own one you don't have and that would be the 35 anniversary custom 24 faded blue burst. It's cheap and amazing at the same time. I love my silver sky ...buuuut If I could only have one....Custom 24 all the way. Lov Ya ..Later Guitar Hero
I ended up getting the previous version a 2020 Zach Myers, Trampas Green for $625.00 US delivered! It is arriving today February 16! I can't wait to get home!!! Thank you Mary for showing us this guitar and bringing it to my attention. Now I need a new amp....
got this one few months ago! I love to crank it through a sweet overdrive pedal into my orange micro terror head. It looks so awesome and always wants me to pick it up and play.
I want to thank you -- without placing any blame on you for MY decision -- but your video pushed me over the edge to ordering a Zach Myers ... really looking forward to working with it. Thanks for your videos.
I have the older model and it is a great thing to play. I have a few other humbucker guitars so I put P90’s in it and made one master tone and master volume control. It’s a very versatile beast!
I bought a Gibson "tribute" Les Paul on sale about 4 years ago. Very cool guitar for around $850 CAD. Loved the pickups and the feel and the vibe. Frets were definitely poking over the side, tuning wasn't great. But I liked the guitar and the price. Gave it to my friend who builds and sets up guitars. For another $120 he cleaned up all the frets, and totally set it up, and it now plays great. So lots of things can be "fixed". BTW, I like the 'tribute' line because it has a thinner neck than most Les Pauls and is 'weight reduced'. And the wood 'gold top' has a cool look.
I have always wanted a PRS, but never really "looked" at them. I was always a Gibson Les Paul, Fender Strat kind of guy. I play mostly blues. Long story shortened... I bought an SE 245 Standard back in December to put some SD P-Rails in... turns out I loved the sound of the guitar so much that four weeks later I bought the Trampas Green Zach Myers model. These guitars are by far my favorite! So now I'm a PRS guy! I plan on getting a second ZM (in blue) and putting the P-Rails in the Tramas Green one. Tone heaven! Great playing Mary!
When I was 15, my parents bought me a brand new1966 Fender Jazzmaster. I still own it, and love it. But...It's heavy. I've been searching for a lightweight electric, semi-hollow. I tired Thinline Tele's, Epiphone's, D'Angelicos , Gretsch's...nothing floated my boat. I might add I'm not a fan of 24 3/4" scale guitars. I saw this funky colored blue guitar with a F Hole, so I figured I should try it. As soon as my hand felt the neck, I was sold! And then I found out it was 24 1/2" scale...WOW. Took me about 8 months to get one. I play it daily while my Jazzmaster takes a well deserved rest. Nice Review Mary...
I've got an older Myers PRS in Trampas green. It's a spectacular guitar. I absolutely adore it and recommend it to everyone. The pickups are fantastic, as well as the look and feel of the guitar. The main downside with the older Myers guitars was that they weren't always bookmatched very well (the top). I lucked out, and mine's perfect. Congrats on your new PRS. They're starting to accumulate in my collection as well.
What a stunner. Had a PRS a few years ago, SE Custom 24 in Trampas Green, which I foolishly sold 😩😱😥 and have regretted ever since.!!! This model you’ve reviewed looks and sounds brill. I may need to consider revisiting PRS........I feel there is a little space in my room that is just the right size......Happy playing Mary 👍🏾
That looks like the Ocean or Bay on a calm still day. Soo beautiful that is a wonderful paint job. Someone put alot of time and effort into it. Shame the company only gets credit for it. Not the employee that worked on it.
Greetings from San Diego, California Mary. Love the guitar and your playing. You have a nice touch to your picking/strumming which is nice on the ears. Great voice too.
In the US it is $829.00 at Sweetwater. Currently it is on back order and I want one! Love the color, the design and how it sounds. Thanks for showing it to us Mary.
I was going back and forth on this guitar. It always looked nice in pictures but I always wondered if that’s because they made it look nice. But your reaction when you pulled it out of the bag pushed me over a little. The sound is the sound, and all the videos here have nice sounds.
When checking out a new guitar, to go along with 'playing experience', I like to see how a guitar projects while playing dry. If a guitar can impress me when it's not plugged in, it has a good chance of impressing me once I play through a good guitar rig.
That sounds mighty good, in part because you're playing it I'm sure! PRS really does pay attention to the playability of its overseas production and doesn't treat its affordable guitars as kind of throwaway or unserious instruments. The tides are changing in attitudes to production in the East where you can typically spec a guitar of any quality and they will build that spec, be it Duesenberg or Reverend, EB Sterling, affordable Ibanez or Gretsch etc. Eastman is pretty darn good. With all these companies and models, it's probably way too many rabbit holes to chase down at this point (or F-holes as the case may be) but thanks for contributing to this venture.
Big PRS fan here. I really thought this was some of the best sounding stuff in your videos. I have watched a number of them, not all, and I am more of a rocker. But I really enjoyed it especially the bit and grit of it while playing sweet jazzy stuff. cheers
I want this guitar so bad! I have the 2017 version so it’s probably not going to happen but man! I really want this baby. Nice guitar Mary, super jelly!! Lol
I just had to swing by and say thank you for your review of this specific guitar. Ive been keeping up with updates about info, and release dates for this one. It is beautiful looking, and thanks to you, and a few others, I can officially say i just preordered mine!! It was $829 in the U.S. for those who are curious. Cant wait to play this one!!
Very pretty in Blue. I played a second hand one in Trampas Green which had all the looks, but none of the factor which I always look for when guitar shopping - falling in love! I want an instrument to speak so stongly to me that I simply can't think of life without it. That can happen in a moment (when my nephew kicked on my trellicopter as I was playing the Burns Double Six at Manson Guitars in Exeter) or over time (4 visits back to the same shop before deciding 6 strings on a bass wasn't too many when it had the sound and looks I was after).
The Zach Myers is a definite go if you are looking for a guitar that plays out of the box. The pluses for me are the chunky neck with the satin neck and the weight. Also, great tones. The only drawback is that there isn't coil splitting. Is it a biggie? Not really. If the lack of a satin finish neck, flamed top, and f-Hole aren't a deal-breaker, you can go with the 245 Standard for 189 bucks less. The SE series is really a great deal for somebody needing a first nice electric, or a gig-worthy guitar. Right now, Paul's Guitar from the SE series is on my radar. Mmm mmm mmm!
That is a nice guitar! Whenever I try out a new instrument, especially an electric guitar, I'll try it out unplugged 90% of the time since I'm more concerned with how it feels. If I enjoy how it feels, I'll "test drive" the sound in store to see what I'm working with and if I need to change out the pickups.
Welcome to the PRS family!!! I already own the other 2 PRS Zach Myers guitars with f holes in them. The honey burst and trampas green. Love them both!!! The other guitar you should give a try is the Ernie Ball Music Man Luke 3 HH or the cheaper model Sterling Luke guitar model. When you get please do a video review on it. Those 2 guitars and brands are my favorite for genre and variety of tone. Plus the quality for the price us the best!!! Thanks for your video.
I do lots of fussing to test out guitars but one of the first things I always do is play the intro bars to “proud Mary.” It’s a fast way to notice fretting and intonation problems along a good portion of the neck.
Good morning Mary Spender The blue colour of the body looks absolutely stunning it looks like a very good piece of kit for £800 look like it's well worth it.... cheers phil
First vid I’ve seen of yours, What fantastic content, you seem a lovely person, the music was beautiful, the tone was great. Really enjoyed your video. Will watch some more for sure, It took me 10 years searching for my Gibson Les Paul. All of sudden one just felt perfect in every single way so It was bought, Ive played loads of PRS, the build quality is second to none,
I always check that neck is straight (apart from release) and not twisted.Testing frets playing every string every note feeling frets and listening for possible dead or boom spots. Visual is important too - I find the more you like the guitar the more you tend to play it. Personal preference I go with classic colors and shape nothing extreme - I happend to like it and in case of a trade down the line classics do better. As for sound most important on acoustics. Electrics - pretty much just check for hum unless they offer a grade A tube amp which you know in a dedicated room.
Looks like a keeper!! 😜 I got a PRS SE 22 custom last weekend, and I’m super impressed with it! I think mines a 2020 model. Your daily vids have kept me entertained, thanks Mary!
I wish I could play like that and I don’t know if a guitar like that would be too much for me .. I love the way you play .. your awesome and thank you for sharing 😊
On sale for $620 USD and in my hands today. The best guitar I have owned to date thanks to how easy it is to play it and it’s one of the best looking too. The rough cut on the f hole and the tuning knobs were the only shortcomings. Everything else screams $2000 guitar.

If it is coming out of the Core Tech Factory that is a good thing.

I have the green Zach Myers, it's a fabulous guitar. The new blue colour is stunning.
You are the first person I've watched play this guitar without moaning. And yet you're the best I've heard playing this guitar.
got this one few months ago!
Love that guitar.. I have a 2004 PRS SE Custom 24 Santana model and that is one of my favorite guitars enjoy it!
I have the older model and it is a great thing to play. I have a few other humbucker guitars so I put P90’s in it and made one master tone and master volume control. It’s a very versatile beast!
Mary. You have a range of very enviable life experiences. I do hope you are enjoying the kind of life & career you are having
That riff at the beginning is so cool. I want this guitar
Gorgeous guitar! nice sound. Your face when you played that first unplugged riff!
Really love your dynamics on that guitar!
I have been seeing more and more PRS guitars on UA-cam. They are gorgeous guitars and all that I see playing them love them.
Reminds me of my own Zach Myers. It's still my number 1.
God that guitar is beautiful. I MUST Have.
That looks like the Ocean or Bay on a calm still day. Soo beautiful that is a wonderful paint job. Someone put alot of time and effort into it. Shame the company only gets credit for it. Not the employee that worked on it.
Had a CE24, loved it, but had to sell to help pay for my daughters surgery. hope to get another one one day. may go with a SE next time around.
Greetings from San Diego, California Mary. Love the guitar and your playing. You have a nice touch to your picking/strumming which is nice on the ears. Great voice too.
First thing is feeling the neck , if I like the shape. After that it's how it sounds "unplugged" , if it rings nicely..
I always change the strings upon arrival.
In the US it is $829.00 at Sweetwater. Currently it is on back order and I want one! Love the color, the design and how it sounds. Thanks for showing it to us Mary.
Yes, those two PRS’s look great together.
I was going back and forth on this guitar. It always looked nice in pictures but I always wondered if that’s because they made it look nice. But your reaction when you pulled it out of the bag pushed me over a little.
The sound is the sound, and all the videos here have nice sounds.
Beautiful guitar!
You make it sound fantastic, Mary!
When checking out a new guitar, to go along with 'playing experience', I like to see how a guitar projects while playing dry. If a guitar can impress me when it's not plugged in, it has a good chance of impressing me once I play through a good guitar rig.
Just got your new release. Watching on my phone.
Played on of these today- great value guitar and would highly recommend for under $1000.
Big PRS fan here. I really thought this was some of the best sounding stuff in your videos. I have watched a number of them, not all, and I am more of a rocker. But I really enjoyed it especially the bit and grit of it while playing sweet jazzy stuff. cheers
Beautiful guitar. Very sweet playing Mary but it's that stunning guitar I'd simp for 😁😎😍
On top of everything else, you always have the best thumbnails :)
My SE Pauls guitar is quickly becoming my go-to as well - incredible guitars in their own right - never mind for the price! Great playing!
I do lots of fussing to test out guitars but one of the first things I always do is play the intro bars to “proud Mary.” It’s a fast way to notice fretting and intonation problems along a good portion of the neck.
Good morning Mary Spender The blue colour of the body looks absolutely stunning it looks like a very good piece of kit for £800 look like it's well worth it.... cheers phil
I RRRREALLY LOVE your style of playing the guitar :)
First vid I’ve seen of yours, What fantastic content, you seem a lovely person, the music was beautiful, the tone was great. Really enjoyed your video. Will watch some more for sure, It took me 10 years searching for my Gibson Les Paul. All of sudden one just felt perfect in every single way so It was bought, Ive played loads of PRS, the build quality is second to none,
Really beautiful playing at the beginning!
Adore that sound!!! Just came across your channel, that's my lockdown Sunday sorted 🤙🏻
That PRS is drop dead gorgeous
I just got mine last week. It is amazing!
I wish I could play like that and I don’t know if a guitar like that would be too much for me .. I love the way you play .. your awesome and thank you for sharing 😊
Lovely playing and introduction to you and this marvel of a guitar :)
Got one of these a few months ago. It’s replaced my Gibson Les Paul as my favorite. This is an awesome guitar at a ridiculous price!
On sale for $620 USD and in my hands today. The best guitar I have owned to date thanks to how easy it is to play it and it’s one of the best looking too. The rough cut on the f hole and the tuning knobs were the only shortcomings. Everything else screams $2000 guitar.
It's the best SE IMO. The 277 Baritone with soap bars is very nice too. I have the original Zach in Trampass Green.
