Zac, Michael, I own this guitar. It was gifted to me. I ❤ it. Everything is perfect. My Luthier says it's the nicest guitar he has ever seen for the price. I also love the Gig bag it came with. Thank You Zac❗️🥰
lol. Too funny. I came to the comments to let him know that is your real name. Thanks Zach for a great collaboration on this guitar. I wasn’t familiar with Shinedown until just ordering this. I LOVE this guitar. You all (you and PRS) knocked it out of the park.
My last PRS had that too as a way to protect the headstock and keep tuners from moving.. I think it's a great idea,a little bit of foam always helps...great review Trogly!!
It really is interesting how your cameras interpret the blue color differently. I would hope in person the green under color would be easily visible, just a really beautiful color scheme. Thanks for reviewing an affordable PRS.
I got one recently, love it, and can definitely say the color pops much better in person as far as the greens and blues interact, like caribbean water. Its stunning!
@@nalleydrummer Cool, and congrats on the new guitar. YES, nothing like seeing a guitar in person, great description of that PRS finish. Check out a PRS with the Indian Ocean Sunset Finish......WOW!
I have been learning everything I can from every guitar and/or bass building company I know of, since getting my first at 14 years old, and now am applying all these lessons to the instrument building business started by my wife and I recently. I can safely say that I have learned the most about running this type of business, and about building high end instruments, from PRS.
I got the Zach about 18 months ago, and even though I have a PRS Mira, and US made Tele and 60th anniversary Strat, both of which I love, the Zach has kind of taken over my #1 spot. First, I think it's fantastic sounding at all pickup positions, has a real purity of sound, the neck is beautifully playable with the satin finish and shape, plus it's a super comfortable guitar for ergonomics including the light weight. I noticed you didn;t say too much about that, so just noting that, a great guitar when sitting down especially. The blue finish is stunning and contrasts beautifully with the naturally finished parts, let alone the headstock matching finish. So many people note its value for price too, just another virtue and many saying this could easily list for twice its price.
I have one of these. For clean tones, the magic happens in the middle position on the pickups. I actually played some green Day songs with it on the bridge and it still sounded great. It's my go-to for recording clean tones still. It's amazing for the price, just don't expect a djenty metal machine and you'll be really happy.
The PRS SE guitars that I have tried in the last 5 years have been some of the best guitars that I have ever played. (As long as you aren't trying to get "That" Les Paul... or Strat. The SE's can be a great workhorse guitar that have a lot of sounds to provide.... but they only come "close" to "That L.P. or Strat" tone. There is the "EG" model with 3 single coils if you want to get closer to the Strat sound... but it is still slightly different.) Love my two PRS SE guitars!
Got the same guitar but updated the plastics to cream color and the tuners plastics to cream and took off the clear knobs to black looks amazing!!!!! Love the guitar!!!!
I bought this guitar several months ago. I absolutely love it but I hated the black plastics. So I swapped it for the cream pickup rings, replaced the toggle switch to cream as well as cream kluson locking tuners. It looks so much better than stock.
@@christylasure7072 I bought the usa ones from the prs website. The screw holes don't line up perfectly, but the rings cover everything so I didn't mind making additional holes.
I bought one of these - I was close to pulling the trigger on the Green one, but they then announced the updated Blue. This thing is all about little details that just elevate it - the gloss stinger with satin back on the neck. The headstock veneer that is usually only on higher-end PRS models - SE and S2 usually have plain or painted headstocks. The high end wrap-around bridge with big brass saddles and intonation screws. The strap buttons - large diameter and with a wide flat base that do hold well to straps (unless you are really throwing it around). Way better than Fenders inverted cone that almosty guides the strap off of it. The stain on the veneer - how they manage to create movement in a thin veneer I'll never know - it's sheer magic. The rosewood neck on mine looks a touch darker than yours (camera effect?) and mine has a couple of lighter streaks in it - that I really like. There is colour variation in the tops too - some have a greenish undertone, some whiter and the depth of blue varies a bit. Since the veneer is real wood, I expect there would be some variation in it. Mine DOES NOT have any veneer on the back - you can clearly see the 3 pieces of the body and they do not appear to have been chosen as to match. It looks like 3 pieces from 3 different trees - not that I care to be honest. The covers proud of the back, I think, are the compromise demanded by PRS in exchange for the headstock veneer - to trim the production cost back. The green version has flush covers but no veneer. I may go to locking tuners, graphtec nut and maybe brass/nickel covers (or pickup swap) on mine - but it's not necessary right now. (and some have suggested a treble bleed mod) Maybe in a few years if I want a change. Oh, and I like the sound of it unplugged - it makes late night practice non-marriage threatening :)
Quick comment on the control covers sitting proud--as a guitar tech I MUCH prefer they sit the way they do. You have no idea how frustrating it is (and how many covers I've ruined as a result) to struggle with trying to pry one of the recessed covers. I mean, it's not like they get in the way any at all when playing.
I have a 2014 Trampas Green ZM made in Korea. Body appears to be three pieces, but there is no veneer on the back. Neck appears to be one piece except for the "wings" on the headstock. Cavity covers are recessed. It is interesting seeing these subtle changes.
I also dont like how those pickups look on that. I would change the rings if i liked the pickups. I have an s2 (made in maryland) the pickup covers are the same. I dont notice if im playing only if i flip it over and look
Glad to see you have done a PRS SE. I have two SE's from Indonesia and one from Korea. I also have a Squire bass from Indonesia. All of the instruments I got new and were ready to go out of the box. i have never had to have fret work or even a basic setup. Indonesia is the premier Asian string instrument manufacture in my experience. I am not sure if PRS is still performing final QC checks on SE's before they are shipped out to dealers and distributors in the age of Covid. But I do believe that was an important step to maintain a QC level. PRS produced some videos, one of them detailed the process they go through when they get SE's delivered. They have an entire team go over every guitar doing a QC as well as a setup. They showed the pallet of the ones that did not pass. There are some dealers in NA that are able to get SE seconds and sell them at a discount. They are upfront and honest about all imperfections or issues. I have found they will upgrade them by swapping out the fixed wrap tailpiece with a fully tailpiece with full intonation and brass saddles.
I’m kind of new at playing guitars, been playing for about five years, for me it’s always been about acoustic guitars. Mostly own Martin’s. I do have a Siegel. And I have a couple classical guitars. I thought I’d never play electric. Then I went over to a friends house who has about six electric guitars, and just for fun I played around with his. The last one I played was this very guitar, and instantly fell in love with it. The tones are amazing, and the ease of play was incredible. Love the thick neck. Long story short, turned right around and bought one. Now I’m learning, slowly, all about electric guitars. So glad to see this video, kind of makes me feel better about my first electric. Thanks!
You have the best tear downs on UA-cam. I mean theres other ones, but I appreciate the fact that you look for things like maple caps and stuff when you pull the pickups out. Really great stuff!
I haven't bought this guitar yet. Today is Jan1,2025 and I am wondering if I feel the need to replace either pickup, which one should I replace. I like the neck pickup I have listened to several examples on the Tube. When I listen to the lead pickup it isn't my favorite. I have 85/15's in the Ce24. I like them. I like some Jazz, Blues and Rock. I was thinking about a lead pickup of 59/09 or 58/08. I only mention these pups but I don't know what they sound like either. I know Paul is an exacting designer and they can't be bad. What ya think. Thanks.
I played one of these at a guitar center and thought it definitley needed work. Then again at another guitar center and it was one of the best playing guitars ive ever held. I always want to try a guitar out before buying, because it isnt always the same.
Regarding the back covers, even on the $2300 CE24 Semi-hollow, those things aren't routed out so they stick out at the trem cover and control cover. It'd be nice if they were flush. Still, I love these satin finished necks and gloss bodies. The body is protected and the finish won't wear but the neck will feel great. That CE24SH has it too. How did you do that wild vibration look at 4:30 ?
I love my PRS SE 245 Standard tabaco burst . I went and got me one of these it'll be here in a few days . I really like the raptail/ tail/bridge setup . yes I know what ya mean . love the sounds .
The 12th fret inlay on the blue SE you talked about is a fluer de lis. You see that in a lot of french settlements in Louisiana and Canada not to mention France. I love the band Shine Down nut don't care much for the covers. Likely because they're overplayed. I will give PRS this . They make a damned good looking guitar not to mention very playable for a decent price.
Metal pickup covers on any of these PRS SE models automatically makes the whole guitar look 2× more expensive. It's very frustrating as gorgeous as these guitars are, how cheap the pickups always look. I've owned 3 of them myself and swapped the pickups on every single one of them.
If you get one with the zebra pickups with the cream and black they look a little better as well but yeah plain black looks way cheaper than what these guitars have to offer
True, the zebra ones do look a little better. My Custom 24 SE in grey-black had the zebra ones, but I had a set of black-chrome covered Dave Mustaine Live Wires I threw in it and that looked SHARP! Sounded amazing too cuz those are basically an active boosted version of the JB / Jazz set. 🤘

I have a PRS SE standard and they are great guitars don’t get me wrong. My one issue is the pickups as well. They tend to have a dark and muddy tone at times.
Nice in depth review, could you please post a link where i can get a cable like the one you used on the multimeter to measure the pickup's impedance? Thanks.
I think I’d throw covers on those pickups. I own a few PRSs and their new TCI pickups are the best they’ve made yet (at least the ones that I’ve tried).
I own one of the green ZM models. Couple things, the tuners aren't actually glow in the dark, all though that shade of green makes you think they should. Also mine is a 1 piece neck instead of the 3 piece. No back veneer on mine either....interesting!
I picked up the green series needing a light single cut for some gigs I had booked instead of bringing a heavy LP. Had and still have no idea who he is or anything about his band but I will say he specs out a great guitar. The neck finish is something I haven't experienced before and I really like it. It feels and sounds as good as anything twice the price I've got laying around. Though the pickup switch is buggy and needs replacing, other than that it's a great guitar for the money.
I absolutely agree that Zebra pickups would look better, or wood pickup rings. I also would prefer the CNC vertical mill run the roughing end mill about 15 to 25 seconds longer, and run the finisher about 30 to 40 seconds longer, to cut a very shallow pocket for the control cavity cover and switch cavity cover to sit flush ro the body. That's not just a guess pulled out of... nowhere... that's an estimate based on years of experience programmung and running many CNC machines, a wide variety of tooling, dozens and dozens of extremely diverse workpiece materials, and years of building guitars and basses. The rougher could be a little faster, finisher probably a little slower...
They were in the green version. On top may be the compromise due to Zach asking for a headstock veneer on an SE (usually reserved for the Core models and above) so they had to trim the cost of manufacture elsewhere. I have one and I'd take the stained, flamed headstock veneer over flush covers any day of the week.
I've been a little apprehensive about buying one of these models cuz I'm a metal guy and it's a semi-hollow, but this video really helps to show it's really not all THAT hollow. It's almost more like he just wanted the f-hole there for cosmetic purposes only? 🤔
I had one of these that I put fishman fluence pickups in. I didn't notice any over-the-top feedback due to the "semi-hollow" design if that's what you're worried about. The short scale length though, meh... had to have 13's on it to be playable for me in D standard.
People with better ears and amps than me say the semi-hollow adds a slight airiness to the tone. For me - it sounds louder, fuller and richer when I practice unplugged vs my solid body guitars. I was surprised how much sound comes out when I first strummed it.
I bought the ZM3 but decided to replace the stock tuners with Gotoh SD90 locking tuners (direct drop-in replacement). I also swapped the pickups with PRS 58/15s adding the coil taps that are normally associated with those pickups. The guitar played awesome before but now plays more like PAF with the ability to go to a Tele thinline or P90 guitar when I ever I want to. It's one of my favorite guitars and my first PRS. Its worth taking a look at if you see one.
Also note when looking for a guitar one wants to mod, look to see if somebody as put in mods that you want. Those guitars actually end up cheaper than stock guitars. More work and money put into a guitar usually equals less resell value.
@@orlock20 depends on the mod and the guitar. But for low end guitar it usually doesnt matter about upgrades. I have sold two of the 14 guitars I have owned my life so for me its playability.
Just ordered one . I have a PRS SE standard 245 tabaco burst I love it . I've heard that these pickups have alico 5 magnates in them could be just a rumor .
Commonly Fleur-de-lis (Lily) and Fleurs-de-lis or Fleurs-de-lys (Lilies). Historically it’s more possibly a symbolic Iris common to the river Lys in Flanders, where the Franks who long used this symbol on their coat of arms lived prior to moving into Gaul. Now, back to my PRS ... 🎸
I'm an old man that has played everything. The big 3. Fender, Gibson, P.R.S. They all have quality guitars. In my opinion which means nothing, I was and still love a cool L.P. But I have to say I rather give my money to Mr. Smith. Paul is too cool and so into his product and his guitars are top of the line. The necks are a work of art, the tone. Even the S.E. that are built overseas are sent back to Maryland to have the team look it over before it goes out. I can get the action as close to the fret board as ever wanted. A great company and a great guitar and a cool owner.
I have the green version of this. My absolute number one. My daughter loves throwing picks in the f-hole to see when I notice them. Kids are so easily amused 😅
😄 my three year old grandson walks in the door straight over to the guitar on the stand pulls the picks drops them in the hole strums the strings with his fingers and walks away. Every time. Cheers dad 👍🏻
I had an SEone and it was a great well made guitar with frets like glass. That was Korean made but the Indonesian ones seem pretty good too. Head and shoulders above Epiphones

Nice looking guitar love the color and flame/stripe patterns in the top. Excellent review Trogly! 👍
I own one of the green ZM models. Couple things, the tuners aren't actually glow in the dark, all though that shade of green makes you think they should. Also mine is a 1 piece neck instead of the 3 piece. No back veneer on mine either....interesting!
Also the back plates are recessed on the green knes
I picked up the green series needing a light single cut for some gigs I had booked instead of bringing a heavy LP. Had and still have no idea who he is or anything about his band but I will say he specs out a great guitar. The neck finish is something I haven't experienced before and I really like it. It feels and sounds as good as anything twice the price I've got laying around. Though the pickup switch is buggy and needs replacing, other than that it's a great guitar for the money.
Mine has that same little spot you were talking about.
I own several PRS SE models, they are well crafted guitars for the price range.
I love prs guitars
Thanks for weighing it too. Missed off by most others👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
The wide fat profile is my favorite neck profile PRS does. It’s just comfy to me.
I have one and it’s hard to remember it’s an SE. I’ve done all the core upgrades to mine and it hangs with the cores I own.
Nice Fro!
Edit - lovely guitar, thanks for the great review. I have been thinking about purchasing one for a while and putting 57/08s in her
It actually works for the Halloween theme. Zach's legal name is Michael Zachary Myers haha
Those black tuner tips have to be the same ones demo/mod shop is using when they swap for black plastics.
I've been a little apprehensive about buying one of these models cuz I'm a metal guy and it's a semi-hollow, but this video really helps to show it's really not all THAT hollow. It's almost more like he just wanted the f-hole there for cosmetic purposes only? 🤔
Basically just 1 new chambered area in the guitar that is opened with an F. Not quite like a 335 at all
I think what your looking for is a BC Rich Dagger
But a solar, it's worth the money
I had one of these that I put fishman fluence pickups in. I didn't notice any over-the-top feedback due to the "semi-hollow" design if that's what you're worried about. The short scale length though, meh... had to have 13's on it to be playable for me in D standard.
People with better ears and amps than me say the semi-hollow adds a slight airiness to the tone.
For me - it sounds louder, fuller and richer when I practice unplugged vs my solid body guitars.
I was surprised how much sound comes out when I first strummed it.
Man
That looks and sounds INCREDIBLE!
Totally fits the Halloween theme because The Birds
This so beautiful and I would love to own one of these, I always love prs guitars.
The interesting 12th fret inlay is called a Fleur De Lys
Translates to "Flower of Life," or something like that?
Commonly Fleur-de-lis (Lily) and Fleurs-de-lis or Fleurs-de-lys (Lilies). Historically it’s more possibly a symbolic Iris common to the river Lys in Flanders, where the Franks who long used this symbol on their coat of arms lived prior to moving into Gaul.
Now, back to my PRS ... 🎸
Wow now I regret selling my custom 22. Then again I did get a 60s catalogue amp and some cash for it so I think it was worth it
I'm an old man that has played everything.
Got to see Shinedown in Paris a few years back, incredibly tight band, and great showmen to boot.
One of greatest live show I've ever been to !
Lol. The use tons of tracks. Might have something to do with it.
Although mentioned, what is the deal with a rather short 24.5 " scale? Is it to make the playability easier thn a 25" or 25.5" scale?
The longer the scale, the lower the pitch. Parlor guitars have a much higher pitch than a baritone guitar. It's why necks on bass guitars are so long.
Oo a PRS! We never see these on the show! Love a little surprise :)
Greetings and well wishes from Utah man!
How about Marty Friedman signature single cut like Jackson or PRS SE of his?
You still need to checkout highend ESP LTD EC-1000 :)
I like the blue finish, though I would have put a trem on it. Looks a good quality guitar.
PRS, excellent.
And its actually a PRS that I can almost afford!
I have the green version of this. My absolute number one. My daughter loves throwing picks in the f-hole to see when I notice them. Kids are so easily amused 😅
Also the green one has recessed back plates, shielding inside and no veneer on the back.
😄 my three year old grandson walks in the door straight over to the guitar on the stand pulls the picks drops them in the hole strums the strings with his fingers and walks away. Every time. Cheers dad 👍🏻
Thats what happens when you dont teach your kids respect
"Fro knows guitars!", anyone? :-)
I have the model before that one and I love it! Actually that's it in my profile photo.
Love your show . Watch it all the time .the best
I have this guitar and it's amazing
I like my Gotoh wrap around bridge as an upgrade on my guitar.
I got this guitar in June an it ended up being my favorite guitar
The PRS SE Paul's Guitar has to be one of the best bang-for-buck guitars on the market.
Nice to see a PRS, great vid T, Thank you.
I had an SEone and it was a great well made guitar with frets like glass. That was Korean made but the Indonesian ones seem pretty good too. Head and shoulders above Epiphones
Cool 😎 I think I’m going to add to the Christmas list ✅🎸🎸🎸
Mine on its way from sweet water.looks like they stopped the back veneer
