The answer is simple - Hellenic colonization of India and Iran. You will understand this once you look at Indic history in an international context. After Alexander's devastation of the Indus valley in 326 BCE, he died soon thereafter in Babylon but produced enough damage so that the later Greeks were able to gain a foothold in Iran, Bactria and Punjab (with Bactria as their main base). The Greeks terrorized the local population in Punjab, Sindh and Rajasthan and were simply unbothered about local population and customs just like the British 2,000 years later. The Selucid polity in Iran was interested in exploiting the whole of Iran, India, Bactria and Babylon just like the British Empire. It was basically an empire of loot and barbarism - at that time mostly cattle and other animals, farm produce, gemstones, etc. Ashoka's patronage of Buddhist monks basically provided Greek soldiers an opportunity to dress up as Buddhist Bhikshus and gain refuge in Viharas as freebooters. To summarize, the patronage of Buddhism was responsible only indirectly - not directly, for the disintegration of the Mauryan Empire.
Might be mauryan emperor dasarath who was the last ruler was unpopular.. may be majority followed Brahmanical religion and Mauryan emperor was forcing sramana-buddhism on people which made him unpopular? in 185 BC Pusyamitra became Emperor, Greek buddhists of bactria were upset. They snatched Arachosia(Kandahar, zabul province) , Makaran coast(Gedrosia), Gandhara (Peshawar vaelly, kabul valley ghazni gardez included) and captured up to indus. Soon vidarbha (east maharashtr) became independent. But Agnimitra probably regained south. Agnimitra also defeated Greek along Indus. Punjab was still with shunga

It would have had to have happened at least in a cultural sense. Even when the mauryan dynasty was no longer in charge the city of Pataliputra itself remained as the capital of northern India till the end of the Guptas… isn’t that so? And the guptas themselves must have admired the mauryans to name one (or was it two) of their kings “Chandra Gupta”
translations of pali (indo aryan language probably one of the ancestor of Hindi) canon (pali canon is foremost buddhis text; authentic saying of buddha) are available online. When you read it you will find that Deities mentioned in Vedas like Indra, Brahma are mentioned in Pali canon. Even Vehnu (pali for Vishnu) is mentioned in it. Brahmins are mentioned, sacrifices are mentioned in pali canon. Thus the Hinduism that you know now , big temples or worshipping in temples with temple festivals were not present at all or were present in smaller scale during Buddha or Maurya period. The Brahmanical religion was Vedic following Dashapurnamasa, Sthalipakam, Agnishayanam, Agnishtomam, Athirathram, Somayaga, Vajapeya , ishtis and other Vedic Shrautha rituals. Rudra, Shiva , Vishnu can be found in Vedas along with Indra, Mithra -varuna, Aswini, Pusha, Brahmanaspati, Agni, Maruts, Soma etc ... But megasthanese do mention about existence of temples in ancient india in his book Indica. So we cannot 100% say temples were not present during mauryan age and Brahmins were doing only homa rituals (fire offering). However even Shungas, Mauryan rulers like Bindusara, many Satavahana kings who were patrons of brahmanical religion (Proof their inscriptions) did not build imposing temples... instead they helped Brahmins generously to complete Vedic Srauta rituals.... These kings who patrolnised brahmnism also helped Buddhist monks setup large structures like Chaityas (Monk assembly hall), Viharas (monastries) and stupas. But with the rise of Banavasi Kadamba in south india and Guptas in north India around 300 AD large Hindu temples began to be constructed.
So when you say temples were built only after 800 CE it is incorrect. But large temples were started constructing in india mostly by 300 AD with the rise of Gupta, Kadamba, pallava dynasties. Probably Brahmins understood that large buddhist structures like monasteries (Viharas) were attracting common people, and Brahmin Vedic srauta rituals and homas not attracting many. There is not a single Purana that tells exactly when or which date the Mauryan empire ended - what is the evidence taken from which Purana? according to various Puranas, 12 Maurya kings ruled for 316 years & the last king of the Maurya dynasty was Brhadratha. The Puranas record that Brhadratha ruled for 93 years, which indicates that (1) he did not have capable successors or (2) he was clinging to power way past his prime. He was uprooted by his own senapati, Pushyamitra Shunga, who started the Shunga dynasty. The Matsya Puran records that 10 kings of the Shunga dynasty ruled for a total of 300 years Note that Chanakya uprooted the Nanda-vansh to establish the Maurya dynasty, so this phenomenon is not such a rare occurrence. Maha-Padma-Nanda founded the Nanda dynasty, which ruled Magadha for a total of 100 years (out of which Maha-Padma-Nanda himself ruled for 88 years).
6:40 bherighosha is replaced by dhammaghosha this could mean the “sounds of war drums” has been replaced by “sounds of chanting”.
