The exterior shot of the "Vidisha" cave is that of Cave No. 3 at Kanheri, Mumbai. The tall Buddha statue is also from the verandah of this cave. It makes sense why the film-makers opted for Caves that are so close to Film-City and under ASI control, so access to general public can be easily managed. Film-making is an artistic endeavour with commercial bottomlines to meet. Historical accuracy may be sacrificed in favour of convenience or keeping the budget low. Their target audience is not Historians but the general public, who just need to see an ancient structure to transport their imagination to olden times that they do not know much about. I don't think Historians should lose sleep over such inaccuracies unless they cause inadvertent / intentional harm.
Didn't you watched the end of this video where he clearly mentioned about this, and said as a viewers we expect a little accuracy in atleast the depiction of the palaces etc..
Jay, another reason for Ashoka in the victory procession to not ride a horse but to be in a chariot would be that horses used to be much smaller, similar to mules. Only in the last thousand years horses have become much bigger. That is why heavy cavalry only became a thing in middle ages, and prior to that horses were either used in light cavalry or chariots.
What's the basis of this assertion? It's well known that some ancient Pashtun tribes were dealers in horses, so were all those horses just being used for chariots by Mauryas, Guptas?
about long hair, I've seen some scholars mentioning that kings soldiers etc used to have short hair because long hair are easy to grab by enemies in battles. Not sure about ancient times but we have paintings of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with very short hair. Kings with Long hair are popularized by tv serials and movies. Your take on this ??

As regards to the age of Asoka during the conversation with his grand pa can you be so sure that asoka was only 2 years old? Is our historical chronology so accurate?
They say Chandragupta turned ascetic in his old age, refusing the ego centric royal symbols.May be that is the reason he has no turban. Would you agree?
This was a film and not a documentary programme. In films the stories are slightly altered to make it pleasant and watchable to the viewers. If the entire historical story appears as it was, nobody would watch it. You need to appreciate the hard work behind making a historical film rather than criticizing it. Even the historical text about the Emperor from different sources do not agree with each other and there are confusions. So why a film cannot have wrong information. Another thing, our text Wansattapakasini mentions that Asoka's mother was Dharma, a Mauryan Princess , whom King Bindusara has married from Champa Same text mentions that King Chandragupta has married his maternal uncle's daughter who has fled with his mother when the Chandragupta's father was killed. So she also seems to have been a Maurya or a Sakyan as Mauryans were also Sakyans and used marry among themselves. If we check the legends of Sakyans now living in Burma and Bangaladesh region, they mention that during Sakya massacre some Sakyans have fled to east adn it is highly possible Dharma was a daughter of one of these Mauryan families as Wansatapakasini correctly mentions it. Further down our Mahavamsa, Wansattapakasani also mention that Emperor Asoka's Queen Wedisa Devi was a daughter of a family of Sakyans who have fled to Avanti also during Sakyan Massacre, during Lord Buddha's time So Chandragupta, Bimbisara as well as Asoka all have married Queens with Sakyan blood as them selves. Further information comes form Sri Lankan legends and chronicles. Brothers of this Sakya Wedisa Devi eight princes were sent to Sri Lanka with the sacred Bodhi Sapling and these families still continue to live here
Bhaiyya keep posting long videos, I know it takes a lot of effort but man with your knowledge can pull that off. In the days of historians like that makeup aunty your importance must grow.
No Hindi movie or TV serial has been historically accurate in its depiction of ancient Bharata. Only one notable exception - Chanakya serial (original one directed by CP Dwivedi). In that also however, there is excessive nationalism and sloganeering.
How about the depiction of alcohol shops in films like Bahubali & asoka? They often serve as settings for song and dance sequences. Are there any ancient sources that describe how these establishments appeared and functioned?
@@BhagyalaxmiKumari-vb4ub I'm aware they obviously existed in the past. But as for the hefty tax, where did you dig that up? It makes sense why the film-makers opted for Caves that are so close to Film-City and under ASI control, so access to general public can be easily managed.
Film-making is an artistic endeavour with commercial bottomlines to meet. Historical accuracy may be sacrificed in favour of convenience or keeping the budget low. Their target audience is not Historians but the general public, who just need to see an ancient structure to transport their imagination to olden times that they do not know much about.
I don't think Historians should lose sleep over such inaccuracies unless they cause inadvertent / intentional harm.
He never said don't watch this movie or it's not entertaining. He just said it's inaccurate
Didn't you read the disclaimer in the beginning of the film , Clearly they have mentioned its a blend of many fictional elements
Nice way of giving minute details in reference to movie
about long hair, I've seen some scholars mentioning that kings soldiers etc used to have short hair because long hair are easy to grab by enemies in battles. Not sure about ancient times but we have paintings of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with very short hair. Kings with Long hair are popularized by tv serials and movies. Your take on this ??
What? Shivaji is not even 400 year old... Mauryan are two millennium old.. more than TWO thousand year ago... dress.. attire.. culture .. even religion of India changed a lot between Asoka and Shivaji
@@Kamaljeet-rx3jf calm down. its a question not a statement. And doesn't matter 2000 years or 400 years, long hair is never a good thing for a soldier. Even today soldiers don't have long hair for the same reason.

As regards to the age of Asoka during the conversation with his grand pa can you be so sure that asoka was only 2 years old? Is our historical chronology so accurate?
Finally something a bit different 🙂, I would request you to please continue this series if possible.
They say Chandragupta turned ascetic in his old age, refusing the ego centric royal symbols.May be that is the reason he has no turban.
Would you agree?
Keep it up bro , great 👍👍👍
As a Masters degree holder in Ancient Indian History, I'd like to say: MORE OF THIS!!!!!!
Another thing, our text Wansattapakasini mentions that Asoka's mother was Dharma, a Mauryan Princess , whom King Bindusara has married from Champa
Same text mentions that King Chandragupta has married his maternal uncle's daughter who has fled with his mother when the Chandragupta's father was killed.
Further down our Mahavamsa, Wansattapakasani also mention that Emperor Asoka's Queen Wedisa Devi was a daughter of a family of Sakyans who have fled to Avanti also during Sakyan Massacre, during Lord Buddha's time
So Chandragupta, Bimbisara as well as Asoka all have married Queens with Sakyan blood as them selves.
Further information comes form Sri Lankan legends and chronicles. Brothers of this Sakya Wedisa Devi eight princes were sent to Sri Lanka with the sacred Bodhi Sapling and these families still continue to live here
Amazing idea. Do review other movies too 👍🏼
Bhaiyya keep posting long videos, I know it takes a lot of effort but man with your knowledge can pull that off. In the days of historians like that makeup aunty your importance must grow.

Alcohol shops used to exist and there was a hefty tax for that 😂
@@BhagyalaxmiKumari-vb4ub I'm aware they obviously existed in the past. But as for the hefty tax, where did you dig that up? i think that point of showing 18th century Holkar palace is right cuz almost no palace of Muryan period has survived till today so as a representation using other palace can be accepted yeah there time gap is 2000 years but probably Muryan period palaces would have also almost looked like that only

They showed a medieval and almost modern palace which was very careless
ancient Indian architecture was done in a particular way,

The name Asoka written in Brahmi is found on few stone inscriptions.
What is the prakrit/Brahmi pronunciation of Asoka? You are basing your argument on Sanskrit pronunciation which is not correct because Asoka used prakrit(not Sanskrit) for his rock edicts.

Very nice video, but one thing Chandragupta did not become a Jain monk, please check JF Fleets work on this, he has pointed out why it is not Chandragupta (grandfather of Ashoka), also Kannada Jain texts like Vaddaradhane mentions that the Chandraputa who converted to Jainism was not Ashokas grandfather
