Pruning and repotting cane Begonia
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 бер 2019
- Pruning and repotting cane Begonias like Begonia maculata 'Wightii' or Begonia 'Angel Wing' can be scary. But you can do it! Pruning your plants will encourage more growth from lower areas of the plant, which means more branches/steams and a bushier, fuller look.
Cut your Begonia stem just above a leaf node where a leaf has grown. Leave enough space on the cutting to ensure you can propagate it in a glass of water! Easy peasy, Charlie.
I hope you enjoy this video.

Came for the begonia care tips, stayed for the comedy 👏
This commemt section is full of {sings} 32 year ooooolllld laaaaaaaddddiiiieeees. 😘💕🤗
Absofrackinglutely!
I'm 42 tho...lol
I’m exactly 32 years old. 😂😂😂
I'm 29 😂 with a begonia and a cat
Jenna marblesssss
I'm going to need a betsy begonia wine list for house plants, do you recommend a pinot grigio for repotting? a chardonnay when fertilizing or pruning?
I just waddle down to the supermarket and get whatever's under 12 bucks.
Plants and wine are a perfect blend🍷
Too cute. Plants and wine ... what a fantastic duo! Im an artist, so just add in any art form and I feel we have a perfect combo!!!
@@betsybegonia ahahahahahah
I find that pinot grigio goes great with begonias and me.
It's almost like Jenna's old drunk tutorials, but not very drunk 😊 Gorgeous begonia!
I try to hit a sweet spot with my blood alcohol level so I can still edit later. 😂
Betsy Begonia Tee Hee!
Well I’ve got my glass of wine, so that’s a start 😄
Let's do this. 😎
What is my cat DOOiNnGGG!? That scared the crap out of me 😂
You're like a really cute Plant Jim Carrey! "What is my cat.. DOIIING?!" XD So happy I found your videos!!
I walked in just as you mentioned having a glass of wine and it was in that moment I made sure to hit like, and subscribe on her and insta.... your energy is pure and utter joy
I watched the side ponytail intro 5 times 😂😂😂
I don’t even have a begonia but still had to watch the video for your comic relief.
Thank you.
I just got into side pony tails. I'm a couple decades late but IT'S WORKING FOR ME. Thanks so much for watching, I'm glad you enjoy my videos. 🙂
Loved it! Your cats toilet break absolutely made it too!
Thank you Betsy Begonia! 😘
She deserved a good public shaming.
You are my #1 favorite channel.. Your so funny.... and fun ....thank you for sharing your personality with us....
Thank you so much for watching, I'm really glad you enjoy my videos. And thanks for saying so! It means a lot to me.
Well you just became my new favorite! ❤ you're hysterical!
Aw, that's really sweet. Thank you, Shayla! I'm glad you enjoyed this.
Amen! I watch every one of ever Betsy’s videos whether I’m interested in the plant or not. She’s awesome!!!
@@vancityplantie5752 That's super sweet, thank you so much.
Hi Betsy! You always make me laugh when I watch your videos! You are so much fun! I've never tried begonias inside, but now I need a begonia just like yours! TFS!
Thank you Sandy! I hope you do get one, it's truly a delight to look at every day.
I bought my Begonia wightii well over a year ago now in the wintertime. I was searching high and low for any video about them! Luckily he's grown well - even in the temperamental british summer time and even bloomed. So glad to see this video now! Thanks!
That's wonderful, I'm glad it's doing well and that you enjoyed this video. 🙂
Oh my goodness! You made me laugh...Nobody makes me laugh...I need to laugh! Thank you for being YOU! 🤪😆😜🥴😛🤣 oh, and the plant knowledge was great too!
Beautiful begonia plant thank you for sharing this video
I so needed this video since I recentlynscored a beautiful Begonia Maculata. It is as tall as yours but not as full. I am going to prune and propagate it. Thanks for sharing😊👍❤.
Just started watching your channel today, and I'm learning there's so much I've been doing wrong with my plantees! I have a big boy begonia and thought he needed a huge pot- but now I'm reconsidering his home. Thank you for the upload!
I'm really glad that it's been helpful, that's awesome.
Came for begonia care tips, stayed for sassy, dry humor.
I never noticed how often your cat actually does use the liter box during your filming until I binged several videos in a row and hahaha. It made me giggle because it’s so true. Such a mischievous kitty.
She did it again just the other day when I was trying to film in the kitchen. 🤦♀️
I got my first begonia a few weeks ago (Begonia Diadema) and she is gorgeous! I think the first time I watered her I overdid it because she definitely has been dropping too many leaves. Thanks to your video I feel more confident that I can get her to a happy state and can get her blooming 🤗 I was going to switch her pot because she is quite large but now I definitely won't! So many useful tips in one video!! Thanks 😍
Good luck! 🙂
Thanks! I have this gorgeous plant, and it has finally started to look good for me (after having it for YEARS). The pot I have it in is enormous... but luckily I have a small spare terracotta lying around which I’m going to transplant it into :)
Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed this and I hope it helps.
hey Betsy, when do you recommend pruning? I was thinking late autumn/early winter, but with some plants if you prune too late it can mess up the flower buds forming for Spring (i.e. gardenias). So any suggestions on best time to prune would be much appreciated. Thanks!
These plants won’t flower usually anyways inside you can prune really whenever but spring and fall and usually trimming seasons
Holy fucking shit that thing is massive! WOW!!! I love your personality, you totally make me smile! Keep up the great work Betsy!!
Thank you for all good advice ♥️

Me when I wake up at 3am to the sound of my cat barfing
😂
🤣🤣 that wine is well deserved!
Lol you crack me up !!
I throughly enjoyed your video.
Currently I’m getting over pneumonia and watching your video was helpful and entertaining. Thank you!
I'm really sorry to hear you gave pneumonia and I hope you feel better soon. Thank you for watching, plese take care.
This was so nice! As always! Would not mind an even longer video. 😉
And I am glad you got yourself some wine, girl! I might do the same today or tomorrow. Depending on when the sphagnum moss arrives!
Hooray for drinking habits (and basically all of the other life plans) depending on plant activities! 😂💚❤️
Thanks so much for watching! One of these days I'll make you a half hour video. 😂
Pruning to get bushier plant doesn't work for my Begonia. It keeps growing in height, I must've cut her on the same spot 3 or 4 times now. I got a bushier plant by planting the rooted cutting next to their parent plant, but the parent plant just continues to grow on the same spot I cut it.
I think that's a wonderful tip as well! Thank you for sharing. I'm pinning your comment.
Same I have a spindly angel wing begonia
Sometimes you have to be aware of where you make your cut because the cut if on the inside of the plant it will grow a branch growing inside to the plant and if you make a cut above Leaf it's pointing to the outside of your plant that's where that branch is going to grow. I learned this when I learned how to prune my Apple trees and holly bushes you can pick out where the branch is going to shoot out from the main stem. And it's true you need to have multiple stems in a pot to have a bushy plant one stem especially with some types of angel wing begonias you're never going to get a bushy plant
This was so helpful Betsy! Thanks for making this. I just got my first cane begonia and I’m going to replant it in a smaller pot than what it came in. I’ve only had Rex begonias but the cane ones or so pretty also...I’ve gone down the begonia hole and can’t get out😂😂😂
If you're doing well with rex Begonia, you're gonna LOVE cane Begonia. So easy!
I loved this video as well as the one about the care of cane begonias! I got my first, a begonia Sophie Cecile, and the spots are a lot less visible or dimmer than I know they should be. Any chance you know why so I can rehab this guy since getting it from the nursery?
I just ordered an Angel Wing and I’m so excited! I’m so glad I found your channel, also, because I know I’m gonna need the help. 😁
That's awesome! I hope it does well. 🙂
Ohhh, I think I've found my perfect channel.
We're gonna be good friends. 😂
Repotting and pinching today. Yay, omg you are also so intelligent. Yay! Again, you're fun!
you got me @ "you also need a glass of wine".. LOL subbed!!
So vital.
subscribed at 1:17. you're hilarious and i actually learned how to take care of the clipping i "pruned" (aka stole cause she deserves it) from my neighbour
and the auxin tip? brilliant!
You are my spirit animal 🙌🏼🥰
Wine & Begonias! 🥰🥂🌿 I’m In!!!👍🏼
Hey! Thanks for the video! When you stripped most of the soil from the roots, could you have divided the plant into 3 plants? I have one I bought that I want to divide, but I'm scared!
I always have a glass of wine with my plant pruning/caring adventures 😊🍷♥🌿
you are so funny!!
thanks for making this video
Would you be able to do a video on cactus care, re-potting and which pots to use? Btw love your videos and so happy I found your youtube through Jenna Marbles 💕
I don't have any cacti right now and that's mainly because Paris gets super, super grey all winter long and I've lost a succulent every summer for the past three years. Also I'm afraid my cats will touch them. If I ever do get a cactus, I'll definitely talk about caring for them and repotting them. Thank you for watching, Allison!
Omg! You are hilarious and I am so happy to have found you! Can't wait to watch more videos!
Hi Betsy! I love houseplants care tips videos! I have a Begonia maculata 'Wightii' too & one other angel-wing, 'Pinafore.' They're the first of this type of begonia that I've ever had & at 65 years of age (me! not them) I wonder what took me so long! That being said...I REALLY needed this video! They're both still in their nursery pots, and my 'Wightii' desperately needs pruning AND repotting. I've wanted to encourage it to be fuller and to grow more shoots; but, it's better if I actually SEE something done rather just READ about it. One question: what type fertilizer regimen do you follow with your begonias? Thanks in advance & thank you so much for sharing your how-to's! Plant Love! 🌾💜
Hi Margie! I use a half-diluted fertilizer about every 2 weeks in the growing season from March to November. 🙂 I don't really have a favorite brand. I'm currently using something called Agroflash simply because it's what was on sale at my local hardware store.
hi. you plant is amazing. i have one but i have a problem the leefs are alwasy getting dry. and. is not doing very well. what can i do please . can u give me a care tip. for it.
Welcome to I'm stressed out wheres my wine.. heres this pretty begonia 🙃🌸 I love this girl!
😂 Thank you!
Ahh yes a fine Chardonnay for repot day is an absolute must! 😂😍
I just got one of these plants so this is very very helpful. Thank you!
AHhh Miss Betsy!
I got one of these from a local grower yesterday day my not have any roots yet, should I dig in and see what's there or keep it in its pot on a heat mat until it drys out?
This was such a fantastic and highly practical while also entertaining video. Loved it! Just got my first begonia last night.
Thanks for your video! What do you recommend using to fertilize this begonia-- I have the same one! I just pruned it back (welp! ) and I'm waiting for roots to grow on my cutting. Thanks!
P.S- I see some burnt tips on mine and freak out so hard but just noticed yours and it's not something to worry about too much.
I was sure that because the leaves are red on the other side, the red wine would help better. Don't you think? Well, I guess it's just a preferences 😄 I don't have a begonia yet, but i left one my eye in a garden centre to watch after my soon-to-be new babie, while my other eye is searching the internet for a care tips before I buy this polka dot beauty. Thanks for your tips, cute cat 🐈 ❤
Omg your cat. Hilarious! Thanks for the info... really enjoy your videos!
She's a delight! Thank you so much for watching my channel. I'm glad you enjoy it.
Im gonna build up my channel! So fun! Omg ... you just cracked me up big time!
So envious of ur begonia.. she is growing beautifully ❣️😍
Thank you! She's my pride and joy!
Not envious, but happy!
Ouch! Trimming it hurt so much! I plant to plant the rooted bits back to to the same pot to make it bushy. Thanks for your help
I have this plant. I make art with dots. So, this is awesome!
Just bought one, thanks for the video!
Perfect! I hope this helps. I also have another video just about basic care. 😊
I am trying to find myself a begonia so i can have my own! i fell in love with this plant from watching videos of you caring and having it!! thank you!!
I need one now too :P
Love the video, the plant and your personality! 💚🧙🏻♀️☘️
doesn't this treatment damage the roots? can i do this with a begonia masoniana? thank you!
I had a begonia for like two years without knowing the name of it, then an instagram post magicallly appeared showing my plant and yeah here I am watching your video and cutting my now with name begonia. Subscribed and girl I love your video so much
So glad you figured it out, and thank you for watching!
I’ve never seen this repotting method before. I’m shocked 😆 Love your cat btw
I hope it was helpful! I've been rinsing all my plant roots in water to loosen off soil mix and all my plants do fine in their new homes.
Is taking off the crispy dry leaves on the bottom advisable? And my humidifier doesnt seem to be enough to keep that from happening.
Patience is key. You're the cutest! Just so you know Im married for six years, so you have no stalker. So fun!
hahahaha i am new to this channel and i'm already hooked
Hey so my begonia has the tips of the leaves looking like they are dying. Can I just cut the dead part of the leaf off? Or should I remove the whole leaf? I just got my begonia not that long ago. Love this plant. Just scared it’s gonna die on me.
I just received a rooted cutting of the polka dot begonia and placed it in soil and sat it near a grow light. I noticed the plant looks droopy! I assume it's going to take a few days to get used to the pot. Can you tell me if this is normal?
How had I not considered to pair wine with plants?! What a stunner of a begonia. The wightii is on my wishlist. Saving the vid for reference. (Yes, Universe, may this serve as the manifestation of my own wightii)
😂 I love your comments so much you kill me. Yes you should get one. And I should help myself to a glass of wine, it's 5:30. 😂
Is that the wine talking? Kidding. B, I feel precisely the same about you and your videos! @@betsybegonia
This helped so much!
That's fantastic! I'm glad you got something out of this. 🙂
My cane begonia took forever to root in water. Like almost three months! Probably because I was so excited to have her I decided to make more plants right away: in January 🤭 Yours looks amazing!!
Wow, that's a long time! Mine usually start showing roots within 2-3 weeks and I can pot them up in a month or so but they get lots of bright, indirect light and I keep them in a nice warm place. Thank you for watching!
Begonias like most plants do their growth spurts in the spring and the summer and in the winter they're kind of dormant. So that's probably why yours took so long to root it was still dormant because it was winter. Most plants don't like to be fertilized during the winter because they aren't growing and can't use the fertilizer. I just started a UA-cam channel I'm 70 years old have love plants all my life so you're welcome to come to my channel and see what's going on there just put the word house plants orchids philodendrons coleus into the search engine along with my name and you'll find me
Hi love your videos I have a question my begonia when I first got it was covered in white spots but now not so much why is that
Your personality is my people 😂
I am going to have to find a cane begonia. Love your kitty!
Yes you are going to!
I like you. And thank you so much for the "pot size" tip. I put my cutting in waaay to big of a pot last time. You confirmed my suspicion that i need to go smaller next time. I'm about to pot up my third cutting. Wish me luck. Also, i love wine and cats too ::insert fist bump👊:: I'll be back
Thank you so much for watching, Stacee! I'm glad this was helpful. 😀
Hi! I have a question (: I have several stems in one pot and i want to give a stem to a friend... Should I cut it off and wait for roots or it would be better to separate it from the roots??
i have a little one ! bt the leafs are broken from the tip what can i do do i take them all out or leave them ;(!! ? HELP
Love your channel! You've helped me begin my (not so slight) obsession with Hoya plants! XD
HOYASSS QUEEN! I'm so glad you enjoy my channel, thank you for saying so.
Well, I loved this. :D
hi Ms betty i need your help.. my begonia keep craking on a new stem of leaf it did that twice already i dont now why.
Omg! Super fun!
Thanks Betsy! Another great video like always! 🌱🌸😬
Thank you Kathy! 💚💚💚
Great video! Since I grow many Angel wing Begonia, I always appreciate your videos on Begonia care. Thank You.
When you root the cuttings in water do you cover it with one of the bell jars? Or leave it out? I got cuttings from a friend and I dipped in rooting hormone and put in dirt with a zip lock bag over them and they wilted!
Have you tried rooting just the leaves? I had a couple leaves just sitting in water bc I didn't have the heart to throw them away and they rooted! I wonder if they will grow into full plants if they don't have a stem?
I haven't tried it but that's great news. You can propagate Begonias from leaves.
I was wondering if I can put the rooted begonia stems in the same pot
Yep!
Oh my goodness!! Love the play by play cat behavior 😂😂😂
Can you propagate cane begonias from the petiole?
Hi edagdwg looking good glad to see you are taking care of this plant thanks for sharing love to see them looking sooooooo nice linda j ☮️❤️ ❤️💯 💯❤️❤️💯 💯
Thanks Betsy! Great video….off to chop my begonia
I just got a massive Begonia from my grandmother today that needs a lot of TLC. So glad I found your channel! Immediately subbed!
I'm glad you found this useful! That's wonderful. 🙂 Thank you for watching, good luck with your new Begonia!
I really gotta try a begonia because this one is a beauty! The angry gerbil sounds were great 😂
You should get one. Or get a Begonia 'Cracklin Rosie'! So gorgeous. 😍
When she grabbed the glass of wine...I knew I had a new friend!😊
I’m so in love with cane begonias. The collection is growing!!! Great vid!!! 🪴
I like Betsy, I like the plants, I like the chardonnay, I like the cat, and that's about it. Sunny and happy just like you'd expect from a repotting clip 😄
You are hilarious. I love it.
Man those leaves are so satisfying to look at for some reason 😂😂
It's a hypnotizing plant. I saw one in my Airbnb while on vacation in Portugal and lost my mind. And now I have a UA-cam channel.
