I love these smart and beautiful birds! It was only when covid kept me and my husband home that I started feeding wild birds and really got to watch nuthatches (and lot of other birds) on a regular basis. @@LesleytheBirdNerd Well, I did like birds as a regular thing before the pandemic but in 2000 my husband and I bought a little parrot... and we both fell totally in love with him and, by extension, all birds. Sadly, he only lived 7 years but wow, he taught us so much and we loved him so, so hard... Now I feel that love expanding to fit all birds. And you have helped me so much to do a better job with the wild ones!

Wow, wow, wow. Tonight's video 5/21/23, is exquisite among your many, many soul-stirring videos. You actually recorded an incredible moment of them relocating the hidden food, oh my gosh! And the uncaching of the mate's just cached nut was fun to see!
I will often call out yank yank yank to let them know I'm thinking of them, hear them, and have unsalted peanut halves or even pecans or walnuts or almonds (all unsalted). I love these little guys with all my heart.
When you brought up the footage of Pinto and i heard the strains of that song you used to play in many older (and gorgeous and excellent) videos, i about cried. That music in your videos used to be my happy place. Watching and listening has brought me such peace and joy and appreciation over the years. I remember Maggie, and Hatch. And Kiwi with Lentil. And Dart, Patch, Buster, altho more vaguely them. I never comment, Lesley, but you and how you do, with your beloved birds, astound me and I quietly thank you each time you allow us into that beautiful world too. 🎼🐦

I have a couple of Eurasian nuthatches at my feeder, and me and my partner lovingly refer to them with pet names as "the bandits" or "look, the pointy one came for a snack". They are so brave and inquisitive and one of them impatiently landed on and pecked on a ball of... (Lard? Tallow? I don't know what they are called in English, lol) in my hand while I tried to fit it in the feeder. An absolute joy to just sit and watch them go about their business, and especially at this busy time for them.

I have them here in central New Hampshire, and back when I still had a feeder on a tree branch I'd get raided by chipmunks regularly. One day a chippie was headed back along the branch with a full load, the only escape route without a 6 foot jump to the ground, and he was confronted by a nuthatch who, for whatever reason, decided to do a "You Shall Not Pass" routine complete with the wings spread and the little swaying dance. The chipmunk stopped, looked confused for a moment, glanced down and decided "nah", looked back at the nuthatch and remembered that this is just a little bird after all, and barreled through. The nuthatch, of course, deftly flew up out of the way, but I'm quite sure the chipmunk received a good peck in the head as he passed by. And me without a camera running. So it goes.

I live in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada mountains, I didn’t even know these birds existed until I started putting feeders in my backyard last year. They definitely stand out from the crowd because of their adorable honking and the fact they are fearless! They fly right up to me when I’m refilling the feeders. I’d love to get them to eat out of my hand. They nest in the redwoods and pine trees behind my house. I love watching them flying back and forth, nonstop, all day. They’ll pick up a tiny morsel and fly back to the nest only bringing one seed at a time, it’s rather funny. I also love the constant tin horn honking sounds they make, there’s no mistaking them for any other bird! Thanks for all the great videos, I always learn something new from them. 😊💜🪶🦅💙🦉

I love the little nuthatch birds, they are so fearless and they can walk everywhere even hanging upside down like a bat. The cutest thing is when they hang upside down and then do their spread out wings and swaying to scare off other birds from the feeder. To me at least the friendliest birds I've come in contact with are a little white-breasted nuthatch and then I've got hummingbirds to the point they will land on my forearm while I hang their nectar feeder after refilling it. I need to get a good camera to get all these little bird friends on film.

Here in northern Ohio we have the white-breasted nuthatch. They look like little penguins bobbing up and down on the tree trunks. One often comes to my feeder, and I have seen him do the raised wing tactic to scare off competing chickadees and tufted titmouse. Sometimes he will even turn it into a brief "dance", where he sways back and forth with the wings outstretched. But it only works about 50% of the time, as the chickadees themselves are quite bold!

Very interesting about the pine sap they use, the tree you showed with the "bubbles" is a balsam tree, you can tell the difference between the balsam and spruce by the needles, the balsam tree will have just two rows, or flat needles, on opposing sides of a branch while the spruce will have needles all the way around the branch. Ive been fortunate to have gotten fairly close to nuthatches while out bowhunting, they arent overly friendly like a chickadee can be but they also arent flighty, they seem to tolerate us humans pretty well. Great vid Lesley and congrats on being over 200K subscribers!

That is true about the nuthatch they will watch people and come around a little but certainly not like chickadees. Thank you, it's amazing that I'm here at 200k :)

Thank u so very much! I’m not sure if u are reading the responses any longer as I remember u said you needed to stop your UA-cam channel. I was sad as I had just started to watch it. Anyway I adore Nuthatches. As a child I spent a lot of time on my grandparents property in SW New Hampshire way out in the woods. I grew to love their sweet vocalizations and their adorable movements. As I got older I would go alone as my family passed away and they would keep me company and from being afraid in the woods alone. My sister sadly sold our property breaking my heart but I’ll never forget my sweet Nuthatch friends. Take care Lesley. You are an amazing photographer.

I have a nesting pair in or near my yard. I call mine, "Yentl", which is the title of the 1983 Barbara Streisand movie.

Clever little birds! That's amazing about the use of sap resin as well as concealing their food caches. Nice some can catch those snacks mid-air. It's always a treat for me to see the Red-breast Nuthatches as they're not common in my regular birding areas. Excellent video and thanks for sharing!

Aren't they though?! Red-breasted nuthatches do some of the clever things for sure and they are just so awesome. Thanks for the nice comment, hope you have a wonderful night 🐦🙂

Imagine how terrifying those talons would be if they were the size of an eagle!

I just love nuthatches, have both red and white breasted, they are so adorable with cutest noises. Also friendly and will eat from my hand. I have Aframe house and they walk every which way up and down roof, so funny to watch no other bird can do it.

How fun to have both of those species. Awesome birds and it's too funny about the ones you have walking up and down your roof, hahahah. Adorable

My Jenday Conure does the ‘open wing sway’ whenever someone tries to take a picture or video of him. He HATES cell phones and will attach them.

Brown headed nuthatches also make a similar chatter only higher pitched and like a rubber duck. You’d enjoy them! Also, hummingbirds are amazing indeed, I just uploaded a slo-mo of them on my channel, you should check it out! 🐦🐦

We have a sawmill and firewood business and this morning my husband and son were in the woods and there was a crow up in the tree and he was barking like a beagle dog which are used for rabbit hunting here in Newfoundland and Labrador where i live. So obviously he has been watching what the dogs do to get a rabbit going and he was doing the same thing and looking down to see if he got either rabbit moving! My husband and son were flabbergasted that the crow was intelligent enough to mimic a hunting dog. I wish I could have seen it as I love those birds.
