I removed and cleaned my EGR valve on my VW BKD engine. Mr muscle and a pressure washer made it come up like new.
mine is a VW Polo 1.4 tdi and all the pipes and egr valve is in the same place as your 1.9 engine. this helped a lot, thank you
Hi. Thanks for posting this excellent video. This is EXACTLY what I needed! Been driving around with this prob for 9 months now. MOT is 9th Sept. My car will NOT pass unless I get this job done. Time to get my hands dirty. Thanks again! ~Rm😉
Thank you so much - I removed and cleaned my EGR valve today and your video was a great help. It's like a new car now! Next mission is to tackle cleaning the Turbo.....
+Geraldine Fowley So glad that this video helped. Thanks for taking the time out to leave a comment.
do you remember how long it took you from start to finish?
Nice video mate... very helpful walk through.
Thanks for taking the time to shoot and upload it.
Looking forward to reclaiming the power on my Octavia when I get around to cleaning mine :)
+Derek Collins Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. I have a Skoda vRS 1.8t on my driveway these days as well as the Seat 1.9tdi.

that is an awesome great Video to show how to clean the EGR!
Thanks for this it was very helpful in cleaning my sons 2007 Audi A3 although his is a different variant with far more bolts to remove the order of the bolt removal under the EGR remained the same - very useful when ya can't see a thing
Absolute Massive cheers for these videos , I have owned my Golf Mk4 for 3 years since passing my test , I really want to learn how to maintain it properly myself and your videos are really clear and concise, you sort of answer the questions I have in my mind as I am watching ! Cheers n have a good Xmas 👍
Thank you so much for your comment, means a lot to hear that. I hope you continue to enjoy your golf for many more years of safe driving. Happy Christmas.
Delete the egr
Lifesaver, I was getting "Engine Workshop!" (Mk1 Octavia "face-lift" 2004 model 1.9tdi) and flashing glow plug symbol, thought this was worth a shot so tried it.
EGR was completely immobilised by crud buildup. Thorough clean (using oven cleaner as it happens), dry, touch of grease on the moving components, checked the vacuum diaphragms and replaced it. 9nce engine had warmed up the warning stopped and performance and fuel economy markedly improved.
Really glad you got it sorted, thanks for taking the time to comment!
Thanks, I have the 1.9 A6 (2003) But this will get me going!
Thanks for this! I tried this on my VW jetta mk 5 1.9 TDi. Before cleaning, dirty exhaust fumes outside and inside the car, also some loss of power. Afterwards, she purred like a kitten. Had extra power, cleaner fumes.
u answered my question....re: boost hose clips, I think sometimes they put the clips on before pushing the hoses in, I'm replacing the intercooler to inlet manifold piping on my golf.....for the money Ive spent I could almost have got a darkside developments uprated intercooler with all the bloody pipe work!
Excellent job/demonstration done by you thanks
Very helpful! Thanks, Dave!
+Dave Kana Thanks for your comment Dave, glad it helped.
Thanks for a great and detailed video. I cleaned the EGR on my Golf mk 4 TDI yesterday.(I had to order tools from USA). There was only 1-2 mm of oily black muck on the inside. I was surprised that after cleaning there was a big increase in low end torque and acceleration afterwards. Hoping for reduced emissions also
Glad that it helped!
il video è perfetto . Ho messo "mi piace" ma non mi scrivo perchè sono italiano e devo tradurre tutto quello che dici. Però ti dico BRAVO.
thanks a lot from Spain mate!!
Ah the birthplace of the Leon. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
one question is there any gasket? thks
great video and very useful!! we need guys like you!:)
+Florin Rus Thank you so much for your kind comments and glad that you found the video useful.
Very helpful video , I'm gonna try mine tomorrow .
Very clear and helpful, thank you.
You are a great minded man ,thanks for your valuable video
All good an proper to just pull out the egr valve an clean it, if you want better response an reliability out of your turbo deisel engine, I suggest to pull the inlet manifold, intercooler out as well an clean it at the same time. Did it to my hilux 3.0l turbo diesel after I did a full Inlet cleanout, I fitted a catch can, I suggest getting one fitted after you do a full inlet cleanout.
Nice vid! Keep them coming!
+Alin Grigore Thanks for your support! Glad you found it useful.
Hi, Thanks a lot for you help. Your video is very clean and I think it's a ggod oppotunity for my future repair ! Khaled from France

I'm going to go outside and try this now. Wish me luck :p
Best of luck!
another great video in good detail thanks redline
kevin dowling thanks for commenting!
job for next weekend wish i did it when fitting hard pipes and front intercooler but that was a nightmare!
Thx Mate
Very helpful! Thanks
What was the reason you done another clean after the spray clean in your last video, after doing it both ways , would you still recommend an simple spray clean without stripping out the EGR valve, ?
Your First step: clamp removal...You dont Need to Remove the complete clamp, just loosen it And pull the pipe out of the valve, Thats it! 😉
yep very useful thank you, going to give it a go. cheers!
+chris ballard Hey Chris I'm glad you found this useful. Let us know how you get on.
thanks
Good video, thanks!
LoDoJu glad you found it useful. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Redline Revs EGR Valve is clean now :) Wasn't that bad, although the engine already have 270000 km. Thanks again!
I'm glad this video was useful, thanks for your comment!
Nice efficient job Sir
Just wondering see the first vacuum pipe you removed from the top of the egr valve was exactly is it, recently bought a Vw bora but that pipe seems to be missing, if anyone can help thanks
great video
+Przemo Janicki Thanks for your support.

does it run noticeably smoother ? any power gains ?
I wanted to do this on my passat 2004 pd tdi 130 I want to know if I need to re adapt the egr or plug in after doing the cleaning
Nice video Thanks
Is there any gasket between EGR and the pipes?
Thankyou!
You're welcome! Thanks for commenting
Redline Revs that’s quite alright- I’ve just bought a gt tdi 03 and plan on cleaning out the intercooler, egr valve and possibly inlet manifold . Just feel it might pick up and pull a bit better...
Thank you for the video, I cleaned mine a while back and now it is making like a 'pup-pup' noise sporadically at idle..... any ideas?
Never showed the results of the cleaned EGR??
nice job thx.I have some oil that you take off egr hose ( comes from intercooler.)is this normal?
so that spray you used wont help you enough? better option is to remove and clean?
What was the issue you had to diagnose or necessitate the cleaning of the EGR valve. I have done this job several times and I always drop the bolts plus my VW dealer doesnt make it easy as they have removed the parts dept and opened a Parts dept at a different location but only to trade! So getting any parts even those rubber o rings,/gaskets even as is customary I drop a bolt as I am a tad ham fisted due to no index finger, that is a mission to get.
Nice one
Thanks 🔥
Yeah best way to clean it is to let it sit in a diesel bath, only the metal part for about 15 minutes to sock then take it out with a copper brush and clean it well. Also the seat of the egr valve needs good brushing also.
hey guys. i have a audi a4 2.0, and i get white smoke somethimes, not all the time, my oil level and water level are ok....i have only e lambda sensor error. could it be from the egr or the lambda sensor?
Very useful thanks. On an Audi A3 tdi would the asv cause the engine to knock when switched off? Thanks.
cool
what about intake manifold it was dirty too.. you do a video about how to clean it? sorry but i'm italian and i don't understand all you say.. but is a good video :D
What are those holding clips called you removed at the start from the egr hose. There were two that you removed.
I need some for my car and don't know the proper name
+bradfordandmirpur,
Those clips are called "Intercooler turbo pipe hose retaining clip".
Bro , i got the same engine , when i remove the intelcooler , i see oil inside the EGR just like yours , and there is leaking oil from EGR in the end of the EGR , is that normal?
👌👌👌👌
Hi thanks for video my golf 5 1.9tdi
Has fitted with egr cooler on egr valve do I have to do the same processes to get it clean or different way any advice pls cos I know the egr need clean badly as it has fsh by vw and surely vw not clean the egr valve!!
Hi, thanks for commenting. You don't need to clean the EGR cooler, that just diverts coolant to the exhaust gases going into EGR to cool them down a bit. And you're right, VW wouldn't bother to clean an EGR valve but would likely charge you for a new one when it inevitably fails.
what type of engie is it axr ?
Were you experience any difficulties then? ie: limp mode/ loss of power...
hey mate if the egr valve is broken will the car start? my golf wont start and i have checkef everything but the egr valve
thanks
David
u dont neeed any EGR .. people blind them . why put dirty air to engine again ?
Is there any gasket that you should replace?
I can’t find the screw for the return valve
Sir please make a video of Skoda Laura how to change the engine oil
Okay brother I am working on a Skoda Laura at the moment if you kindly subscribe and ask your friends to do so also I will make the oil change video especially for you.
Just did this on a VW TdI. These engines suffocate themselves and in the long run, they than pollute and consume more fuel than necessary because of the wear. Ingenuity and complexity at its finest. Thx politicians and environmentalists! May you inhale your own farts!
is it usefull?
So is this where an oil leak can come from I have a leak on back of block 04 tdi and cannot find it.
Ths leaks normal.comes.from.2.sude wholes on egra valve..so.means the valve needs replaced..worn out..smoke presssure gets.thou out tree hose wholes.and the oil.comes.from.turbo throug pipes to the egar ...but it ok, just replace egr.
hey guys . could cleaning the egr valve get rid of the P0402 code on my vw ????? or do i have to get a new valve ?
Yours is probably stuck open, so a tooth brush and carbon cleaner/softener should do the job!
I've seen some people go the whole hog, and remove the air intake manifold also, and use Mr Muscle to clean that too (although you used EGR cleaner, and I understand you CAN use brake cleaner also?). Pretty sure I've seen people literally soak the egr valve in brake cleaner, rather than just spraying it (which might have been easier than what you appeared to do?)
I soak it in diesel mixed with 2 stroke and then use a toothbrush once it softens up
+Warwick Dean I've just been doing the job, kept spraying the carb stuff into the EGR, giving it a little time and then using a soft brush trying to clean the inside. Did manage to remove a far bit, will need to give it another shot tho. Nightmare of a job, and mucky job too!
Hi! I do the same cleaning on seat altea 2l 2007 but now lost a bit power and is another code is come up P0299 turbocharger underboost. Is that some rubish go on the turbe sensor? thx
Hi did you sort your underboost problem out was it the turbo vaves all carboned up ?
great!!
I'm trying this today I'm my pd130 doesn't look too complicated
Should be fine bro good luck!
How’d it go?
How was it? Im going to give it a go
por favor alguien q me diga donde se emcuentra la valvula pcv en un srat altea
Cleaned mine today it was alot worse than yours 230.000 km and an old man driving :D
Really glad it helped thanks for commenting!
Hi...at 3:17 i just kann' t reach the screw...it is imposible, i don't Know how schould it managed
Thanks, great Tutorial
Will I improve the performance of the car when I clean the EGR?
yes. lots
Hello there. What's the main benefits of cleaning the EGR valve?
+Callum Pearce Usually done to get rid of that nasty light on the dash
+Callum Pearce - You lose power when the EGR is dirty. The engine will also give intermittent reluctance starting as the valve can stick when the gunk builds up ;)
@@derekcollins56 The car will fail emissions test, smoke test in the car test, usually annual after 10yr old cars in Ireland. So the EGR needs to be cleaned or replaced in order to pass the mandated car test, NCT.
@@jgdooley2003 ...dude... yer replying to a post from two years ago 😁
@@derekcollins56 but it helps people who are watching it today
have you done the intake manifold yet coz i cant c it
I have 1.9 TDI is well and I am having a issue of oil leak. I wonder because of EGR. The oil is actually concentrates around the lid oil and around the EGR. Thank you for the video it maybe the issue.
Buy a delete kit and get rid of the egr
Egr off.. And have fun:)
Hi! I tried to do this, but in the proccess of removing bolts one of the first two 6 mm allen bolts got rounded, and I don't have a clue what should I try next, because those bolts are so hard to access, even without rounded head. Does anyone have any idea how can I remove EGR valve in this case?
cut the EGR off with a grinder or hacksaw remove bad bolt and fit new egr valve
Never wear a watch
can the car give the fault code P0234 from this EGR?
because my car give the fault code P0234 but the power i stil the same. from exhaust system before 2 days come blue smoke but after stop the smoke and now i see today something black from exhaust system (like oil) but i dont have lose oils.
Hi did you get car sorted with the po234 code ?
epic fail takes twice as long for me with vac hose box then strut brace to remove then nightmare as have hardpipe kit. Then bottom egr bolts totally seized so put all back together.
Lo primero que hay que hacer es quitarse el relog y luego ponerse a trabajar
your missing the egr gaskets unless there was none on when removed , but mine did have them
Yeah, I was searching through comments for this. Mine is Passat b5.5 but i can't find info does it have gaskests or not. Don't want do disassemble egr only to find I'm missing stuff.
Will this work for a 2012 model
150 or 150.000 miles?
What do you think -.- ?
if the diaphragm breaks, should i change the whole valve or just the diaphragm? Thank you
I think the diaphragm should be replaced
this is addictif video , my EGR Valave has oil leaking , how to fix this?? octavia 1.9 tdi 2011 and 110000 km
+thenfs overclocker Check all pipes and bolts are secure. If it's still leaking oil or EGR gasses then either replace with new EGR or personally I would recommend deleting the EGR valve altogether.
Mine had a leak as well. It was the O-ring between the agr and the manifold.
@@RedlineRevs you mean clog the EGR valve?
@@evamargon1098 hi Eva. By deleting EGR valve we mean taking off egr, replacing with a straight pipe and blanking off the exhaust recirculation line.
@@RedlineRevs blanking or removing the egr is against the law though
