Anyone can be just a step or two from homelessness. This song is a message to all to help your fellow man. I volunteer helping the homeless in my hometown. God Bless you, Steve Earle for this song & video!
Saw a young fella standing by a traffic light on a bitter cold winter day. He was holding a cardboard sign. I parked my car and walked back to him, shook his hand and gave him a few bucks, talked a minute and walked away feeling really really down. He was about the age of my son. Some people have really shit lives, nobody is there because they feel great and want to live like that, absolutely nobody. My son is 18, occasionally when he is with me I give him a few bucks and send him over to give it to someone, then we talk about it. So sad.
I'm an American Veteran USAF & left my late wife because of Domestic Violence Abuse. I had to leave to save myself . RIP: Mary I have forgiven you God Bless you my beautiful wife I really do miss you. I'm so sorry for all those troubled time's we had in our 26 year marriage. 😱😡🌹💋🥰💔
@@jaypoland9430 bless your heart you forgiven the woman that you loved even though she did you wrong sometimes life just tells us we have to play the hand that were dealt and the dice that we rolled
Steve Earle was wayyyyyy ahead of his time and this song is just one of many examples. First song of his that I ever heard as a metalhead back in the day. Still a metalhead and still a SE fan to this day. I think Waylon and Willie would both approve. Willie has.
I forget the song name, but I thought I saw Waylon in one of Steve's videos. It will be Steve Earle & The Dukes. In this particular video, they throw their guitars into a fire. A guy with a cowboy hat on reminds me of Waylon, whether it's actually him or not I don't know.
To call Steve Earle Anti-American proves you know nothing about him. He sings of injustive and hate and how he wishes things were the way they should be, you just have to listen. Which is what I advise you to do with his music. He speaks the truth.
Steve Earle is amazing; I first heard "Someday" in the mid-80s in a town where I used to live, and that song just blew me away. All his music is equally amazing.
I love Steve, but there are some great younger singer-songwriters out there - Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Lindi Ortega, John Moreland, Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Valerie June.... and more, including Steve's son Justin Townes Earle.
saw Steve Earle and the Dukes when they came out here back in the day...still up there as one of my favourite concerts...fantastic musicians, great songs, commitment and energy...amazing how relevant his songs are today...words to this one are spot on...
First time I have ever head this song - I cannot believe I never heard him before! I will be buying some new CDS! What a voice and what a songwriter! Love the outlaw singers!
Very cool song makes you think how good some people have it and the less fortunate are forgotten so in a way it’s a tribute to them and all the struggles they face on a daily basis stay safe and humble
See this guy when he kicked off Copper Head Rd, I was so lucky, only a kid, never forget it, best concert in my life time, coming at you from St. John’s, NFLD. Canada. Bless him.
As a musician and singer/songwriter I don't understand why we can't do it like Steve did back then. Why do you have to be a pretty boy singing someone else's songs or be in a band playing a bunch of covers to make any money? Why can't a guy with solid songs and a solid band catch a break and make some damn money?
+Jason Scott They can... Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton have been getting a lot of press. The question now and in the 80s is how that trickles down to other artists.
His music never hit New Zealand until it came with line dancing in the late 90s. We were always the last to keep up with things from over seas till the late 90s when internet brought us up to date.
I been steve earle fan since 86or 87,seen him several times from Louisville ky to Ashland ky an points in between....luv his music, can't wait till he returns to my.
The country music establishment likes to pretend he doesn't exist because he's a devout socialist who's critical of the military and police and has virtually always been further left than his peers
Amazingly enough, Steve Earle did end up homeless for periods of his life between 1992-94 when he was basically a non-functioning drug addict for the most part- mainly abusing crack once he ran out of money to afford regular heroin purchases and having to go to the slums and crack dens of Nashville to do so. He at least had a few cheques come in once in a while from his career while having family to crash with. Not many others on the streets can say that. He always has been able to side with the underdog and maybe he had a premonition he could easily become like one of them if his addictions got worse. And of course they did.
It is a Terrible tragedy some of these people can be saved!!! I lost a good friend to homelessness I didn't know till 3 years after she lost it all house, child, car, then her sanity. I give her a ride to a homeless shelter dropped her off haven't seen her since!! I now know that I hauled her off, just like a stray dog has left a scar on me!!
***** just got home after Steve's Minneapolis show. it was the best show I had ever seen, he played for over three hours, just incredible, well worth the 50.00 ticket, if you get a chance get over and see him wherever you can. I got a new picture to put up, am going to put a lot of pictures on my facebook page. great man, wonderful!
Joanna Backman Good for you Joanna, I'm glad you enjoyed the show, if he ever comes to Pa. I'll be sure to see him . He is a great songwriter and musical talent for sure.
***** yeah, the show was his best, or at least of the last 7-8 times I've seen him!! you really do need to get to his show when he is in the area, he never fails to give 100% of his energy, heart and talent for his fans.
Well sometimes in the evenings I start to get that feeling Like I'm empty inside I know I'm doin' good now but tonight I'm headed downtown Down by the riverside I sit underneath the freeway with an old friend from the old days And a bottle of wine Well he used to call me "Big Time", and he knew someday that I'd shine Said he'd seen all the signs He said . . "Keep yourself to yourself Keep your bedroll dry And boy you never can tell What the shadows hide Keep ene eve on the ground Pick up whatever you find 'Cause you've got no place to fall When your back's to the wall" He's gettin' old and it's showin' when I asked him how it's goin' He said "I've seen better I guess I've been rained on, I've been frozen, but this here's the life I've chosen If it just wasn't for the loneliness" Now this river suits me to a T. but if you're trying to raise a family It ain't no place to be There's a kid down by the dump there, ought to be in grade school somewhere Now he hangs out with me And I told him . . ." Well we finished off the bottle and I told him,"Joe I think I ought to Be headed uptown" Well it was late, and I'd been drinkin', drivin' home I got to thinkin' 'Bout what's been going down Cause they're nervous down on Wall Street, but they're trying to keep it upbeat Or maybe they just don't care But down at the river eyes are burnin' cause they feel the tables turnin' So if you wind up down there...
When I was doing heavy drugs I use to ride around listening to Steve Earle all the time, been clean for about 10 years now but still love Steve's music
One of the greatest songwriters of our time! !WAKE UP HATERS
Say it,brother.
Steve Earle: America's treasure of a country rock n' roll bluesy outlaw badass.

Definitely...been listening to him since "Guitar Town".
I found a book of his poetry in a 2nd hand story about 20yrs ago, was amazing.

Steve Earle at his best. His slower songs, "My old friend the blues" and "Goodbye" are still my favourite, but this is DYNAMITE!!
Bailing hay in 88 had a cassette player in tractor
I was 11
My fave song from the criminally underrated Copperhead Road album. Willie Nelson once said about Steve Earle: "He don't write no bad songs." \m/
Wow, that's amazing praise from an American legend.
Copperhead Road was the first country music album I bought in 1989.
America's last true songwriter. . Thank you for sharing your talents Mr. Earle.

Good to know people have heard more than Copperhead road.

Ruby - That surprises me, since I know he toured NZ and Australia in the 80s. Must have been some fans there.
He doesn't want that! Doesn't want a record company owning him - he said that like 20 yrs ago, and I think he meant it

GREATNESS !
Well sometimes in the evenings I start to get that feeling
Like I'm empty inside
I know I'm doin' good now but tonight I'm headed downtown
Down by the riverside
I sit underneath the freeway with an old friend from the old days
And a bottle of wine
Well he used to call me "Big Time", and he knew someday that I'd shine
Said he'd seen all the signs
He said . .
"Keep yourself to yourself
Keep your bedroll dry
And boy you never can tell
What the shadows hide
Keep ene eve on the ground
Pick up whatever you find
'Cause you've got no place to fall
When your back's to the wall"
He's gettin' old and it's showin' when I asked him how it's goin'
He said "I've seen better I guess
I've been rained on, I've been frozen, but this here's the life I've chosen
If it just wasn't for the loneliness"
Now this river suits me to a T. but if you're trying to raise a family
It ain't no place to be
There's a kid down by the dump there, ought to be in grade school somewhere
Now he hangs out with me
And I told him . . ."
Well we finished off the bottle and I told him,"Joe I think I ought to
Be headed uptown"
Well it was late, and I'd been drinkin', drivin' home I got to thinkin'
'Bout what's been going down
Cause they're nervous down on Wall Street, but they're trying to keep it upbeat
Or maybe they just don't care
But down at the river eyes are burnin' cause they feel the tables turnin'
So if you wind up down there...
It rings true. Keep your back to the wall.
Gonna poke my eye again
Good song.
really makes me feel good good song
gotta love it
This is. About to be set out.
Words ring more true every day
My yuonger brother Dewayne is playing the lead
