  • CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh, travels with a group of migrants as they make the arduous trek on foot through Central and South America.
The journey through the Darien Gap is a perilous jungle crossing between Colombia and Panama that many migrants must face as they head north to seek asylum in the United States. Over five harrowing days, Paton Walsh hikes the full 66-mile roadless route, documenting the heroism of everyday people, milked for cash by drug cartels and unwanted by any country, as they battle the dense rainforest in search of a better life. Watch 'The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper' Sundays at 8PM ET on CNN.

I literally CANNOT imagine the conditions these people live in within their own motherlands. I cannot imagine the dictatorships that bleed their own people to death, to create such DESPERATION for these people to go through this, with their children. Just to have the hope of a better life.
What i DO KNOW is if my country, the U.S., ever became a dictatorship and bleed me and my loved ones, im doing whatever the hell is needed to get my children to safety. I give a damn about some paperwork. Im crossing, come hell or high water.
This is absolute desperation of these people to go through this. This is the last fighting chance these people feel they have. To risk dying on the trail to escape the horrors of home speaks volumes of horror they must live in the countries they flee

It was very heart warming to see the sick boy recover. My son’s sometimes spike fevers and in the beginning of the year of 2022 I believe, there was some sort of triple pandemic spreading through the school aged children and younger. I didn’t think my son was going to wake up alive bc he was so weak and congested. Under a certain age, decongestants are questionable to give to toddlers. So I was so scared he was going to choke on his own congestion. I think I gave him very small amounts and he pulled through. It’s so scary to see them that ill, that young.

To think that is only the beginning of the journey. Getting across Central America isn't quite as bad but once they hit Mexico, they're extorted by the drug cartels to get up to the border and then have to pay coyotes to get across. It's full blown human trafficking. I've met a bunch of people that made this journey at a migrant shelter I take donations to in Tijuana. Around 700-800 people living in a church compound that shouldn't be housing more than 100-200. You can see the despair in the people's faces but still see smiles and people helping each other until they can get across. Some had been at the shelter for 1-2 years. No place for a kid to grow up.

My parents decided to flee and try to make it to the West. We hid and ran through the wooded mountains for over 3 days. Fortunately I didn't slow them down too much or cry out and give them away cause the commies would ask : "Comrade, why do you want to escape from Communist paradise for the decadent West?" Excellent example of why you need to come to the USA LEGALLY.

Migrants who enter the US legally often need to travel through the Darién Gap. You cannot infer how any individual who travels through the Darién Gap will choose to enter the US.

They are supposed to apply for asylum BEFORE making the treacherous journey. If granted they will be flown legally into the US. This is just forcing your personal problems onto another country. That Venezuelan girl's disability will now become life long healthcare & financial burden to the American taxpayers. There are many impoverished American children that have medical needs that America isn't addressing. I thought that if a person had medical needs that would be a lifelong burden that they are banned from entry. Canada won't even allow an American enter for a second opinion because they are afraid of this!

@@samkimani397 The third safe country rule is in play by now hopfully. You can't fly to Ecudor from China to trek through the Darian Gap instead of claiming asylum in Asia. It is a complete farce being used by young Chinese Nationals paying smugglers $35,000 per person to smugglers them in . They then go to work at the Chinese Weed Farms. 3,000 have entered legally for asylum and thousands more were smuggled since the first of the year! Biden told migrants NOT TO MAKE the journey that there is a new app to apply from. !

We have to change the global economic system. We the people have to issue our own currency, backed by productivity with a sound banking system. The corruption has to be uprooted not the suffering people. We can do this if we come together. I can certainly understand immigrants trying to have a better life. I applaud their courage. Now we have to have the courage to revise the economic system that provides the seeds for this kind of injustice.

I understand that this is hard, their life is hard. They were not born into the best circumstances. I know that many will want to allow these people in because they have empathy for these people but the reality of the world is just that America can not take in all of the worlds poor. We cant let everyone in, there are not enough resources, jobs, houses. At some point we have to make a choice of who can and can not come. There are over 2 billion in severe poverty in the world, America has to pick and choose who gets to come in. If America begins to allow all who make it to the border to come in, it will exponentially increase the amount coming in to the point where America will no longer be able to offer any resources at all. The only real, sustainable answer for these people is to stay and fight for a better life. Its not fair, its not easy, but its the only real answer. The idea that america can let everyone in will fail some day, and then the real pain will begin.

As much as I sympathize with the desire to have a better life and give their children a better life I can’t support the flow of illegal entry into America our system is broken and stretched to the limit already and the parents who send their children alone should be charged with abandonment and child endangerment! They seem to think we will just open the border and welcome them with open arms 😡 come legally or stay the hell away from our southern border 🤬ENOUGH is ENOUGH 🤢
