- CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh, travels with a group of migrants as they make the arduous trek on foot through Central and South America.
The journey through the Darien Gap is a perilous jungle crossing between Colombia and Panama that many migrants must face as they head north to seek asylum in the United States. Over five harrowing days, Paton Walsh hikes the full 66-mile roadless route, documenting the heroism of everyday people, milked for cash by drug cartels and unwanted by any country, as they battle the dense rainforest in search of a better life. Watch 'The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper' Sundays at 8PM ET on CNN.

God bless that Haitian man who is helping the disabled girl. And Nick thanks for comforting the little Haitian boy by speaking to him in French.
The 12 year old girl, and the father with a sick son made me cry!!! 😢 God bless all these people going through this horrible paths to better a life for their families.
Strange how you pray to some worthless make believe god, when you actually worship money. All you are doing is realizing that you contribute to this hell, live grand, and the only thing you can do is pray to a make believe god.
They should just stay back and better their own countries, 90 percent of the world wants to enter the US so can the US accommodate all these useless people whose only talent is cleaning toilets.
What kind of a parent takes his kids through this?
Женщина, у которой девочка не ходит, у нее надежда для дочери, 😢
This is when real super heroes are brought to light
S/o that man carrying that disabled youngster god bless their path to success
Amen
Not all of them just the guy, girl and mom
this is absolutely horrifying but its a very good documentary. It's nice to see how everybody helps each other.
I wish the president and senate would do something to fix the problem instead of housing the problem and signing them up for welfare.
@@1ifbyland2ifbysea there's a difference between economic migrants and the migrants who seek asylum from prosecution
Ok
They're not going for war 😅
This is heartbreaking and frightening to watch. May God see them through this beautiful struggling souls. The world sometimes is imbalanced, only God can Comfort. 😢
I went through the rainforest in Tobago with my son for fun and I could not imagine this trip.
Oh my! 😰🙈
You can see it's just too painful
Fun?
Many adults cant even make this, its absolutely disturbing that all these kids are going through this jungle, so much for America.
This shows the tragedy of immigrants with beautiful cinematography and creates anguish and heartache in the viewer. Wonderful to acknowledge the humanity of those seeking refuge.
This is so heartbreaking to watch, I feel like crying. I can't put into words what I am feeling watching this 😔
I couldn’t hold my tears through these two episodes! This struggle, children, parents 😢😢😢😢😢 so heartbroken by how this world can be cruel! I hope this documentary oppens people’s heart and learn to be more empathetic to others! We all struggle with something in life and at somepoint we all need help. Before we make judgement pls remember that love is all we have.
Stop voting Democrat, and all that suffering goes away. lol
Similar documentaries has been reported by SBS Australia and CBS in,2016 with an afghan/ American journalist. in 2017 it was a Japanese American journalist who both tracked the same route. I'm surprised CNN only reported this in April 2023.
Similar situation is at the Spain occupied Morocco special zone, thousands of migrants waiting to cross over to Spain occupied zone, which is technically EU
It’s evil to bring children and the elderly along this treacherous journey.
This is absolutely horrific and heartbreaking.
Biden fault for inviting them
And people in America think America is bad 🤷🤷 when all these people all wanna come here... EVERYONE from everywhere
I can't even imagine. This is insane.
Yess. If it wasn't for this documentary, I would have never known. My ignorance had me thinking it was just a leveled route.
So many Americans don’t understand what these immigrants have been through to reach a chance at something better. Maybe if they knew they wouldn’t dehumanize them.
@@wendyperryman7693 Sadly I see some commenting who watched this and still only see the "my country" part. They're racists, flat out. Anyone who could watch this documentary and not feel anything but compassion are just terrible human beings who have no interest in understanding.
Amazing story! THANK YOU CNN FOR RAISING AWARENESS!🎉
These people are willing to go through so much looking for a better life for their families. So sad that many in the USA, a land of plenty, will meet them with hostility and distrust.
Yes!
Well, who created the banana republics they now have to flee? Regan? Nixon? The RNC?
Because they’re not doing it legally and people in the US should have the right to say who gets in.
@@dickmoney2946 what is the legal system cause last time I checked we were making it impossible for immigrants to come here. Yet it’s perfectly fine for us Americans just move to other countries for retirement. Foh it’s okay for the United States to invade Nicaragua, Guatemala for thier land. Or help El Salvador, Panama to revolt against thier governments. Come on homie read a fucjing book
Land of plenty? Yeah, plenty of debt, plenty of taxes, plenty of asinine laws, (so many the average citizen can commit 3 felonies a day without knowing it), so all we're asking is they come here LEGALLY, (like my family did), not break any laws and not be a tax burden. Is that really so hard for you to understand?
This hit me on a profound level. Biblical Exodus. The Strength of the Human Spirit
Haitians are amazing people. Can’t believe I’m watching this.
I wish them all the best in their journey, their dreams are valid.
Why not take a boat to Canada?
@@joeyhunter842 Lack of Visas maybe
And unnecessary. They need some financing classes, instead of spending this $$ of such a thing , building a business and apply to a visa properly .. they still have to wait in Mx 🤷♀️🥴
@@kathyramos2924 I bet at least one person amongst the thousands is smarter than you, now ask yourself why they haven’t done what you are suggesting.
@7577 exactly and the business idea sound like peaches and cream but not in those countries. you get chopped up into pieces if ppl know you have money and cartels and gangs will alwsy have their way.
I literally CANNOT imagine the conditions these people live in within their own motherlands. I cannot imagine the dictatorships that bleed their own people to death, to create such DESPERATION for these people to go through this, with their children. Just to have the hope of a better life.
What i DO KNOW is if my country, the U.S., ever became a dictatorship and bleed me and my loved ones, im doing whatever the hell is needed to get my children to safety. I give a damn about some paperwork. Im crossing, come hell or high water.
This is absolute desperation of these people to go through this. This is the last fighting chance these people feel they have. To risk dying on the trail to escape the horrors of home speaks volumes of horror they must live in the countries they flee
Thank you Anderson for this report. For making it real to the rest of us. The ones who questioned.
It's soooooo sad that they are lied to
This is so sad and broken my heart I am sorry to see this and wish everyone well and hope they find the happiness they seek in life I wish we all could be just one world without borders when I had went in the United state marine many yrs ago I joined with the hope of protecting the weak and the vulnerable and innocent and I wish I could have helped them even if it cost me my own life
Semper Fi!!! Thank u for ur service.
I want to embark on this journey, how can u help?
Thank you for your service
It was very heart warming to see the sick boy recover. My son’s sometimes spike fevers and in the beginning of the year of 2022 I believe, there was some sort of triple pandemic spreading through the school aged children and younger. I didn’t think my son was going to wake up alive bc he was so weak and congested. Under a certain age, decongestants are questionable to give to toddlers. So I was so scared he was going to choke on his own congestion. I think I gave him very small amounts and he pulled through. It’s so scary to see them that ill, that young.
Excellent reporting, this shows how the human spirit has the courage to face the worst of adversity and suffer while doing it. CNN at its best.
I cried on seeing the trouble tge disabled girl's mom had to endure😢
Thank you for this video, please can get a longer one's thanks God bless you
The children. 😢💔🙏🏾

I can't hold my tears seeing people passing through this situation.
A lot of them are gonna get sent right back home.
Bless you all and may the new place provide you better opportunities than in place you were born .. put effort with the new place and work out with them , do not be lazy , you will make it… bless you all
Lord how mercy, help these people
Help them stay in their OWN country 🙏!
Thank you for your important information dear Anderson
So much pain
So sad for the people treaking through the jungle with kids. Lord save them
Verry intresting video, i'd liked to watch it :)) Cheers
This is heartbreaking 😢
i have a 4 year old ...10 year old and my first born is 14... i can't imagine how i'd face this with them ... i really can't ...GOD bless and protect these poor people and their children ....
GOD BE WITH THEM AND MAY THEIR DREAM JOURNEY BEAR FRUITFUL LIFE AHEAD
i aint gone lie ..i got hyped when i saw lil man perk up!
Our my goodness. This is so hard 😢
To think that is only the beginning of the journey. Getting across Central America isn't quite as bad but once they hit Mexico, they're extorted by the drug cartels to get up to the border and then have to pay coyotes to get across. It's full blown human trafficking. I've met a bunch of people that made this journey at a migrant shelter I take donations to in Tijuana. Around 700-800 people living in a church compound that shouldn't be housing more than 100-200. You can see the despair in the people's faces but still see smiles and people helping each other until they can get across. Some had been at the shelter for 1-2 years. No place for a kid to grow up.
It’s unfortunate but they know what they face and still do it
@Jonathon Dreyer, you’re absolutely right! To think this is only the beginning and Mexico is the worst part. They run so many dangers in Mexico. Are you in San Diego? I volunteered for an organization that helps the children of immigrants in Tijuana. But now that the encampment is no longer there we do not go. I would love to connect with you and volunteer at the shelters if possible 😊.
@@SJ-qq6xu If you were in a desperate situation where you didn't even have enough to eat, and have to skip eating for days so your kids can eat, you would probably do the same. We are privileged here in the U.S. and have no idea what that experience is like.
@@wendyperryman7693 Sure I would love that. I try to go once a month with clothes and things I no longer use. I go to Tijuana regularly and speak fluent Spanish, so I feel pretty comfortable getting around Baja. I've been doing it alone because my friends don't have the Sentri pass, but I would love to team up with others.
@@panama_juan Yes what about OUR children ? They’re not being protected by allowing this. They found a dead baby with 60 strands of dna . Did the 60 men who raped that child get into the USA? We don’t know anything about these people. We’d be irresponsible parents if we allowed strangers to come into our home with children inside , wouldn’t we ? That’s just the surface . What about resources, sir ? I’d love to help the needy but I don’t have the funds . The USA does not either. Now we’re taking food from our children’s mouths for theirs . Does that make any sense
Only God knows I pray they all make it in life 🙏🏻
How bad can it be in the country that these people came from to subject themselves to this? I cannot imagine what has become of our humanity to make this happen.
Visit me in Ghana and you’ll understand 😃😃
Well people complaint about USA , def they should live in a 3rd world country 🤷♀️
Venezuela is a comunist country with a dictador Maduro. Imagine yourself

Children elderly and sick should not be put thru this it is unacceptable
Captivating ❤
I was one of these people, so my real experience was not easy at all, and I had to suffer it in every sense of the word😢😢
This is heartbreaking, but I do not condone breaking the law and coming to the country illegally.
when nations and countries fail to keep their citizens employed and wealthy, they are forced to immigrate, take risks for a better future. Bitter realities of being a human in different boots.
This is so sad and horrible it breaks my heart
The parents anger me . They can easily stay in Panama or Mexico and make a decent life . Greed pushes them to risk the lives of their children
And yet many go to the US to commit crimes after all this suffering. Amazing
Lord 🙏 bless them
God bless America again
I know what these poor migrant, refugee's are going through trying to make it to safety and a better place. I was born behind the commie Iron Curtain. My parents decided to flee and try to make it to the West. We hid and ran through the wooded mountains for over 3 days. Fortunately I didn't slow them down too much or cry out and give them away cause the commies would ask : "Comrade, why do you want to escape from Communist paradise for the decadent West?" Worst case we could have been shot, placed in a penal Re-Education Camp if caught but we made it out to Austria and emigrated to America and FREEDOM.
Wow!! May God continue to bless u.
Thanks for sharing! It’s nice to hear the stories of other”kids” who have made this journey or something similar. I made a similar trajectory with my parents when leaving Central America. We walked through the jungle in Belize (it was not for days like these people here) and took buses from city to city through Mexico. I’m grateful for my parent’s sacrifices and I hope that those with good intent to add something of value to this country make it to their destination 🙏🏼
Pity he didn't tell them to turn around because don't want them.....come Legal or not at all. How does that mother expect to care for her Daughter ...FREE medical care!!
bless these ppl Oregon Trailing it to America.
May God take care of these people. But my question is don't these people get access to maps to calculate how long the journey is and how hard.
The best and worst documentary i have seen in my life. Thanks CNN. Life is very thrilling in darian gap. But kids are unacceptable.I will be there one day very soon.
literally I’m crying right now after seeing how much those people suffer to make their journey to the US 😢
Problem is the US has the legitimate reason to protect its borders at the same time those individuals have right to a better future 😑
Now I’m thinking about the ones that will make it, they have no idea how many challenges they have to face since day one hear in the US.
It’s a real chaos.
Lord have mercy on forever grateful 💕💕💕💕

This let's you know that Latinos don't care nothing about each other 😝
I consider it child abuse to put those sick kids through this journey. It’s not worth it.
This journey is not easy. God bless them on their journey to a better life.
Excellent example of why you need to come to the USA LEGALLY.
Migrants who enter the US legally often need to travel through the Darién Gap. You cannot infer how any individual who travels through the Darién Gap will choose to enter the US.
They are supposed to apply for asylum BEFORE making the treacherous journey. If granted they will be flown legally into the US. This is just forcing your personal problems onto another country. That Venezuelan girl's disability will now become life long healthcare & financial burden to the American taxpayers. There are many impoverished American children that have medical needs that America isn't addressing. I thought that if a person had medical needs that would be a lifelong burden that they are banned from entry. Canada won't even allow an American enter for a second opinion because they are afraid of this!
V
How if you come from poor countries.
@@samkimani397 The third safe country rule is in play by now hopfully. You can't fly to Ecudor from China to trek through the Darian Gap instead of claiming asylum in Asia. It is a complete farce being used by young Chinese Nationals paying smugglers $35,000 per person to smugglers them in . They then go to work at the Chinese Weed Farms. 3,000 have entered legally for asylum and thousands more were smuggled since the first of the year! Biden told migrants NOT TO MAKE the journey that there is a new app to apply from. !
Walking a thousand miles to the border may just be as like hiking 5.5 miles up to Mount Everest summit.
Instead of doing this why aren’t they applying for asylum in their own countries then they don’t have to go through this
I've don't trail hicking for fun and it's no child's play to climb up the mountains I feel sorry for these people 😢
Want the behind the camera addtion
I thought Hong Kong is a better place to live then majorities of these migrants! If the Chinese guy has enough cash to passed through so many different countries, why didn't he applies for a US Visa and fly legally entering the USA? That Chinese man is insane!
No way the US is going to give him a visa. He has the perfect profile of a person who will 'dissapear' and wont leave the country
Who is taking them across the canal? Thanks to Jimmy Carter who opened the way by giving control of the canal to Panama.

GOOD
We have to change the global economic system. We the people have to issue our own currency, backed by productivity with a sound banking system. The corruption has to be uprooted not the suffering people. We can do this if we come together. I can certainly understand immigrants trying to have a better life. I applaud their courage. Now we have to have the courage to revise the economic system that provides the seeds for this kind of injustice.
oh wow...

Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
I understand that this is hard, their life is hard. They were not born into the best circumstances. I know that many will want to allow these people in because they have empathy for these people but the reality of the world is just that America can not take in all of the worlds poor. We cant let everyone in, there are not enough resources, jobs, houses. At some point we have to make a choice of who can and can not come. There are over 2 billion in severe poverty in the world, America has to pick and choose who gets to come in. If America begins to allow all who make it to the border to come in, it will exponentially increase the amount coming in to the point where America will no longer be able to offer any resources at all. The only real, sustainable answer for these people is to stay and fight for a better life. Its not fair, its not easy, but its the only real answer. The idea that america can let everyone in will fail some day, and then the real pain will begin.
Lord Jesus, in your holy name help us all. Them and Us.
I don't think I have feelings I just don't get how they didn't just research how long it would be there's definitely people who knew the answer

I wish there was a makeshift medical tent for the children on this route. No country is worth bringing sickly kids on this route.
We need Donald trump
As much as I sympathize with the desire to have a better life and give their children a better life I can’t support the flow of illegal entry into America our system is broken and stretched to the limit already and the parents who send their children alone should be charged with abandonment and child endangerment! They seem to think we will just open the border and welcome them with open arms 😡 come legally or stay the hell away from our southern border 🤬ENOUGH is ENOUGH 🤢
Exactly!! I agree!! 😮
I wish there is no borders. This Mother Earth isn’t yours and anyone can choose to live wherever they want
Why they all see coming to the USA the solution of their problems they know that if they make it to the border they will be allowed to get asylum otherwise they will not do it
