My struggle is breathing when I try to keep my head horizontal. I feel like I use too much energy turning my head to get air. Love the tips you're giving.
joe my students mostly struggle with side breathing so after they are able to kick and take 3 to 4 strokes properly . I show them the Ti superman position just to get the feel of getting of side rotation. Is it wise to ask them to use fins to help them get some speed so that they can breathe easily ...
I think I need to practice swimming more often, and need to find a pool in metro.. I hope this video will help me. I love how you show arm pulling while standing at the pool, this is what I need. And I need to practice kicking to make myself comfortable in the water. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.
I love all your tips. I usually swim on the ocean, but always looking to better my swimming. The tide is always changing and sometimes offers some challenge .
Thank you great instruction will be following for more video. You helped me correct head position because I used to sink looking up unstead of downwards. Furthermore I struggle with hand movement.
Thank you very much Joseph , I am so happy to learn the correct movements to swim like a pro 😊 (just a beginner) I needed to do exercises and swimming is great....just subscribed.....greetings to all !
Love this channel. I was breathing out using my mouth , and changed after watching your videos and it definitely has helped immensely.I currently am struggling to get my head out to get some air when breathing freestyle.
I was struggling with my hand movements during my freestyle, but now i learnt where i was going wrong. However, if i run out of breath in the middle and wish to stop and stand, i am not able to stand with both my feet on the bottom of the pool. I struggle and flounder.

Thank you Joe for the awesome tips. Looking at this I found the mistake I'm making. 1. My legs drag cos I'm looking forward. I'm looking forward cos I'm watching my arm pull. 2. I need to do the movements without obsessing to see it for myself. 3. I'm definitely going to practice the finger drag drill. Thank you for the awesome video 🙌
@@zeevgilkis7970 Could be a few things. Are your legs sinking due to bad body position? Also your hands entry need to feel like you are spearing into the water (fingers enter and not palm enter first)
Well, I settled on a breathing pattern a long time ago, which is every other arm stroke. I did pretty much completely change my arm pull about a year ago, mostly due to 2 videos, one from Effortless swimming about getting full extension, and one from Swim Skills about 'shoulder shrug'. I had always thought I was getting a full extension, but after watching the one video, realized that I could still extend more without starting to snake through the water. The shoulder shrug one made me realize that I was starting to use my shoulder, back, and lats as soon as I started my catch. Proper way is to do the catch, then the 'set up' as the Effortless Swimming guy does, which is mostly getting your forearm vertical, and then engaging all the shoulder, back and lat muscles. It really changed my stroke. Still having to work on it though. Too many years of not swimming it correctly.
Hi Joe Thank you for the tips.I get tired faster while swimming the freestyle due to difficulty in getting out of the water to catch my breath without it entering my nose and i get tired faster while flapping the legs
Nice content. Anyway, it’d be appropriate if u can introduce some techniques for beginners to use in open water (lake/sea) and other tips to prevent from drowning in such places.
you have to gain some mileage in the pool. So swimming continuously for 30-45 minutes without placing feet on bottom. This will help to gain confidence in water.Additionally try to use a 2 beat kick and breathing on every other stroke on your favorite side so that you are relaxed. You should also be able to glide with every stroke. It will help to learn a survival breastroke if you get tired whilst swimming freestyle. In open water you have to do sighting to make sure where you going.
Hello Coach, your videos are great & useful. My struggle getting tired too soon and breathing from both sides. Currently I only breathe from right. Thank you
Hi, if you need to learn to breathe on both sides you got to do some drills to practice breathing on the less natural side. Getting too tired too fast is due to lack of stamina. This requires more practices in the water
@@Swimtopian Many thanks for your reply, Sir. Do you have videos on drills to breath from both sides ? I will try to improve my stamina by spending more time on the pool. Thank you once again
I have been practicing since last three months....but still not able to breathe....in freestyle... I learnt backstroked by watching your video....thnx for that.....
thanks for great info. i am struggling with kick . i feel like my legs are bit inside water or i might not be kicking very fast. 2. with start of arm movement, i tend to stop kicking.
My struggle: I am a beginner swimmer. I was kicking fast lifting my head more for breathing and I was getting tired very quickly. May be after 30 - 35 meters I had to take a break for the next 25 meters.
So my trainer introduced me to fins. It was really good. It helped me become comfortable in water. It helped my breathing a lot. Getting tired was completely reduced but with all these good something horrible happened as well. Now without the fins I cannot even move 5 meters. With fins I have no problem at all. Something has gone wrong in my muscle memory. How much hard I try I am unable to kick and move forward without fins. Is there some drill which can help me?
Hi, thanks for sharing. I know what you mean. I introduced fins to one of my adult male students who sank a lot and with the fins he was able to swim freestyle (still struggling to breathe though). I suggest you can build back your muscle memory by doing kicking drills without fins. Just kick on your belly, kick on your sides and kick on your back. It shouldn't take too long and your kicking should improve. Try stretching to add mobility to your ankles. Good luck
Very very useful tips sir👍🏻. Yes I hv a problem of breathing in freestyle. After few strokes I feel breathless Nd 2nd thing I can breath only from one side.
I would like to know more about the timing to breath and the kicking rythem.. is breathing on both side highly recommended? I felt won't shot of breath with both side
Hi Martin, glad you enjoy the video. Unfortunately I am in Asia now. I can help you to correct your strokes if you can send me a video of yourself swimming.
Having a weak pull has nothing to do with kicking hard. You need to build your pulling strength. Try putting on a pull bouy and don't kick just fully rely on your arms pulling and body rotation. This is a good drill to build your pull
Thanks for your nice video. My struggle is my left hand. I feel I cannot have the rotate of left arm similar to the right arm. As the result I move to left rather than straight. If I have a big rotate in my left arm it is quite uncomfortable and painful. I would really appreciate your help.
Hello, Thanks a lot. I have problem with breathing. When I breathe, the water goes to my hear and it bother me. Pls give me some Tipps for breathing and fast swimming.
Surprisingly I'm not struggling with breathing but what I'm struggling with is my arm movement. After my fingers enter the water and I do the extension should I do an S shaped pull or straight forward? (I know there is a strong debate about this). Also how much do I have to drag my arm in the back before taking it out of the water?
You are right about the debate. I would personally just do straight pull. Keep my elbow high to have an early catch. Pull my hand past my hip and exit the water for a recovery
I am at beginner level and age around 45. It took much time in kicking and now learning hand movement but during that body balance is the issue. How do I improve and also learn hand movement?
Thanks for the swimming guidance ..

You can try to swim a smooth 1.5 lengths and work your way up. Slowly and surely
One arm tends to sink downwards when the arm starts to pull backwards.
ALSO, I have difficulty turning my head backwards to breathe.
Try to consciously lengthen the leading arm as you pull the other one backwards.
As you breathe the leading arm shouldn't drop but stay on the surface
I do kicking, hands movements properly, but without floater afraid, can't do.
Yes must try do it without floater
