What do you think is the biggest mistake?
1st - Low elbow arm stroke
2nd - Arm stroke while breathing
3rd - Lifting head for taking a breath

3rd mistake puts body out of alignment so I imagine it results in the biggest inefficiency. However, which one is the worst to one specific swimmer, also depends on the degree of the mistake, ie slightly or obviously.

I'd also go for the 3rd because it's the one that shows me that you are not comfortable in the water. If you know how to breathe and are relaxed, all other problems can be solved.

Extremely helpful video. My only suggestion is to split the screen into two videos, showing the mistake and correct technique side by side in slow motion.

As the fear of drowning is the most basic fear, we tend to breathe in too much air. Probably your problem is too much CO2 in body because you breathe in large amounts of air and not exhaling all the way. You can exhale for much longer periods than inhaling. When feelnig you can't breathe anymore, stop at the end of the pool, hold on to a rim and try to find a calm breath cycle by inhaling above and exhaling with head under water by being focused on your breathing as you're doing it. Try this for a week and you'll be surprised how your breathing improved.
      REMEBER TO EXHALE FULLY!
You can also practice outaide the pool by holding your breath as long as you can whilst you exale.

I have just started swimming recently (~1 month ago) and there is no adult class at the pool where I'm going, so I have relied on watching many YT videos explaining how to swim properly.
This was the best freestyle swimming lesson video I came across and it REALLY helped me.: Yesterday I made use of your precious advices and "unlocked" my first mile of consecutive freestyle without even getting tired (I know it's nothing but before I was able to only swim for 250m consecutively, so it's at least a factor 4 boost just happening out of the blue). So, thank you very much, I will keep trying to improve following your videos!

      This video is fantastic
I started swimming a year nhalf ago
From unable to swim 25 meters without beeing out of breath due tozero techniques
Now i swim freely in freestyle
And after exactly a year i was able to swim a full 1 km in one shot
And sometimes 2 km when my schedule allows
I wasnt a swimmer quiet afraid of water especially deep water
It bothered me for so many years

I have always just stood in the pool or ocean just watching my wife and 3 children swimming and finally took swimming lessons for 2 sessions in a row last year and I have never been shown these techniques. I finished still not knowing how to swim. These are exactly what I should have been shown. I find I'm partial to oxygen so I needed to know how to breathe while practising the techniques. I realised that there was something wrong when I was out of my breathe after 20 mins of free style swimming and some old dude just kept swimming for a straight hour. I got up to 60 laps in an hour and 40 mins decided to change to freestyle and only swim for 60 mins as I was too exhausted for the rest of the day. Now I swim freestyle with added flippers as I couldn’t even swim a full lap without them. I swim 50 laps in around 65 mins 5days a week . Wow, I love to swim, but never learned proper technique. Self-taught...from books😂 My son is learning now and I want to get in the pool, too. I do at least 3 or 4 of these. Thank you for such an informative video. Beautiful swimming!

Thanks for the tips in this video !! I've had difficulties in freestyle swimming recently as I wanted to improve my swimming skills.
To me, the biggest mistake might be lifting head while taking a breath and low elbow stroke, plus wrong kicking, and I felt extremely tired every time I do a freestyle swim.

Yet again, a brilliant video from Swim Up. Low elbow stroke and arm stroke while breathing were particularly helpful for me as these are my biggest errors. Very simple corrections are given. I have already videoed myself performing the arm stroke and can see the benefits already of turning the forearm into the correct position. Looking forward to practicing these. You have a new subscriber! Bravo.

This is really very good. Though I have watched many videos and still struggling to avoid mistakes. I believe this video will definitely help me to improve efficiency. As I get tired too soon with free style, I switch to breast stroke, which I am able to do very relaxed and for long. Let me focus on avoiding these mistakes. Thanks for the super video.

My shoulder was paining because I was opening my palms while taking it out of water - I realised that it was creating a lot drag and was incorrect. I was also doing short arm strokes and getting tired quickly. I learned more about breathing quickly and smoothly. Thank you for this informative video.

For those of you who find the panic attacking when you swim in depth always remember
No matter how much water u have beneath your feet, your head will always be 10 cm under the water.
This helped me a lot. I hope it helps someone out there 😊😊

Recently, I learned how to be in the pool comfortable, in other words, I learned how not to sink. But, I want to learn how to swim properly. This video made me realized the mistakes I make when I practice. For example, my arm strokes are not strong enough because I am not pushing the water instead I am spinning it. Also, the breathing part. I have to breathe while my hand is in front, not arm stoke when you are taking air, “Start a new arm stroke only when your head is back after the breath.” Kicking against the wall is a good technique to practice taking a breath, it will allow turning to the side to get air instead of lifting the head up. For sure, I will try the techniques that the video provided. A comment says to show the mistake and correct technique side by side in slow motion and I totally agree.

Hey man; love the videos. Very informative, concise and technical. I was wondering if you could cover a video on swimming underwater? What is most efficient? For the Marine Corps I need to do atleast 2 laps without resurfacing. Big lungs help but being efficient and swift is also important but I've never had a lesson on underwater swimming.

  • @miguelbarrera8052
    @miguelbarrera8052 5 років тому +4

Really nicely explained and demonstrated. I didn't really know the proper arm swing until now. Something I've noticed on pros when breathing is that thanks to the speed they carry, the head cuts through the water and creates a kind of wake which leaves a sort of "vacuum" and that leaves the swimmer's mouth actually below water level which allows him to breath without having to turn the head more than 90° without lifting the head as you also rightly mention as the mistake. Am I correct?

Video relevant to all beginners, thanks a lot. Just to add on, you should probably mention how strokes are to be performed with leg kicks; e.g. right arm stroke -> left leg kick. This helps the body to be balanced in the water and decrease considerably drag in the water.
