A comparison between Joffrey and Aerion is interesting. Firstly, while Joffrey is foolish and shortsighted Aerion is actually crazy enough to drink wildfire. But, on the other hand, Joffrey is a coward but Aerion has actual combat skills and enjoys jousting, serves with the Second Sons and performs deeds of note in the 3rd Blackfyre Rebellion. Also when he requests the Trial of Seven he doesn't seem to do so from fear of Dunc. It seems like he simply enjoys the trouble and chaos he's spreading.
Just goes to show how Joffrey had literally no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Basically any comparison between him and some of the worst pos from the same universe (a universe notorious for being filled with human garbage) and he still ends up loosing. I cannot think of anyone, maybe Viserys? Even then I’m not sure. Even accounting for drunkness, it does take a degree of guts to threaten to cut Daenerys open in front of Drogo. It was utter stupidity, but even if I cannot imagine Joffrey doing that, it’s certainly not because it would be idiotic. Joffrey had the “luck” of dying young, I cannot fathom the proportion of the monstrous gutter vermin he would have been had he grew to the same age of Aegon IV or Mad Aerys.
It's interesting, especially since Joeffrey isn't unskilled. At the beginning of a game of thrones is portrayed as equal to Robb in sparring despite being 12 to Robb's 14. He has the DNA, his father was fighting men at his age. He's just a textbook narcissist and needs praise to make up for his lack of confidence
That moment in the show hits harder after reading The Hedge Knight kinda like when watching LOTR then seeing the Hobbit after and realizing who the dwarves were that defended Moria.
You know what's even sadder? If R+L=J that would mean Maester Aemon died without ever knowing Jon was his Great Great Grand Nephew I personally like to think that If Jon is a Targaryen, that his name would be Aemon
@@void_wyrm It WOULD have been great if Aemon could have known Jon was his great great grand nephew before he died, but I REALLY hope his name just stays "Jon" in the books. I HATED the show reveal bullshit about Rhaegar naming Jon "Aegon" despite the fact that Rhaegar still had a living son named Aegon at the time. One of the main themes of the books is that titles and names don't matter anywhere near as much as your character and actions, so whether he truly IS a Targaryen or not, Jon will always be Jon and Ned will always be his true father regardless of whether it's biologically true or not.
The death of Baelor Breakspear upset me so much when I read the book years ago. Everything pointed to him being a good king for Westeros, the kind of king Westeros needed. I was more upset by his death than many of the deaths in A Song of Ice and Fire/GOT. Please cover the other books in the series.
the Dunk and Egg tales are my favourite part of ASOIAF, and his whole story is pretty cool. He goes from being Dunk the Lunk to a true hero, even as nought but a commoner he squires a prince and future king, and then is raised to the highest position in the realm for a knight, even in death being a true knight. Also the fact that he’s Brienne’s ancestor, my favourite character in the main books, makes me even happier.
I will never ask George to hurry up and give us books. His stories are so complex and interconnected you cant rush this kind of storytelling. I wish George could live forever.
The Dunk and Egg stories, particularly The Hedge Knight, is my favorite thing GRRM has ever written (including all his non-ASOIAF stuff). It really is the perfect distillation of the appeal of ASoIaF, by a GRRM at the height of his abilities, that also isn't bogged down by the infamous Mereenese knot - they're snappy little novellas that tell fun, self-contained tales with two likable protagonists in a world richly layered with history. I re-read or re-listen to the compiled book once every few months. It's one of the very few things I can revisit over and over without ever getting tired of them.
This is exactly why I love George R R Martin's storytelling. The characters and stories are so complex and intricately connected and he's always asking his readers questions with every storyline.
The best thing about these short stories? They're fantastically read by Harry Lloyd, the actor of Visery's on Audible. Listened to this whole series and it was amazing
Hedge Knight has a fabulous world-building. It is incredible to see the Targaryen dynasty strong and in power. I was noticing some parallels like the two Daeron kings being linked with Dorne and his annex to the seven kingdoms. And maester Aemon gives his famous line about kill the boy for two Aegons.
A girl is simple: she sees Alt Shift X, she clicks. side note, I think a miniseries adaptation of Dunk & Egg would have been a better idea than House of the Dragon at this point in time. aka, the material is already there, casual audiences would likely be more familiar with the names/houses/family members, and you don't need to drag GRRM out of his cabin in the mountains over consultation so he can finish. the damn. books
@Oyasumi a miniseries, not a multi-season full-fledged show on the same scale of GOT. three novellas plus material from AWOIAF is plenty for that type of idea. I understand GRRM has more novellas planned for Dunk & Egg to flesh out their lives in their entirety, but I think more people want him to finish TWOW (and someday start ADOS) with fewer distractions and commitments compared to what he got himself when GOT first began. I'm still excited for the spinoff series, I just think it's a massive undertaking so soon after the end of GOT compared to what they could have done with Dunk & Egg--not to mention how divisive GOT ended up being at the end because of diversions from the books and an unknown ending (whereas we have an ending of Dunk & Egg at Summerhall no matter what)
EXACTLY. But the problem is, they wouldn't even have enough material for four episodes, nevermind multiple seasons. It's only three short stories so far.
I just finished reading all three books. I have an extremely hard time reading books and being able to stay focused on the story. Graphic novels help me retain what I'm actually reading, not to mention keeping me focused on the story. But even with that, I still have a hard time knowing the characters, and understand who they may be later down the line. You successfully cleared up a lot of the story that I knew was supposed to mean more. Thank you for that, and please continue to do more like this. 👍
My favorite knights in the saga are those who are underestimated as targets of mockery and insults: Brienne of Tarth, Davos Seaworth and Sir Duncan the Tall.

@@harvesterofhitpoints4597 well yes, but actually no. "A Knight's Tale" is from the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, who was portrayed as that goofy drunken gambling writer in "A Knight's Tale."

@Anjelica Snorcket I agree. He was great in the show. However, while I hate what happened to the show in later seasons, I do think that they did his character justice since Viserys did die due to his own arrogance and impatience in the novels at around the same time frame in the same way.

Yesss. I love the tales of Dunk and Egg. George said he wanted to write 9 more, he could have been exaggerating that number but that would be cool. Lol @ the easter 'egg' at the end
I never caught that Fossoway detail, it was never explained in the histories or the main series I thought GRRM just added it for flavor, but no even after all this time there's still things hidden in Asoiaf.
I just found it amusing that if it wasn't for that detail there wouldn't be a character called "Apple-eater". I know it's not an interesting character but I just found it funny he wouldn't have ended up using that nickname.
Funniest thing in these stories to me is that Dunk keeps saying how he’s dumb and anyone keeps saying it, but when you actually look at his thinking process and actions - he’s actualy pretty clever
Pretty realistic. Most people think intelligence is flashy, not many value the power of quiet introspection and intuition. Least of all those who practice it regularly without realizing.

Fantastic video as always. Would love videos on the other two novellas as well! I have to say to anyone who is on the fence of trying Audible because of you, A knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a really really good place to start and test it out. Harry Lloyd does such an amazing job giving life to these stories and his voice perfectly encapsulates the emotions of Dunk and all the other characters. The 3 novellas are probably my favorite audiobooks. Even better than ASOIAF read by Roy Dotrice.
Seeing these extended book analysies really help dull the depression the end of the show gave me, and helps me remember why I loved ASOIF in the first place.
I remember being genuinely affected when part of Breakspear's brain fell out. Felt kinda like when Oberyn's head got popped in the show. Maybe a bit less repulsive, but nonetheless affecting.
the way you connect symbolism i would have never even picked up on amazes me every time!! i just finished the prequel series and enjoyed them a lot, but after watching this i appreciate them so much more! thank you for making these videos, they're always amazing!!
Always read it that way that he was never knighted and it will be outed when he refuses to knight Egg only for I'm guessing someone super famous to knight them both or even Egg knighting Dunk
I love when you start talking about the puppet incident: "Westeros is unfair..." You said a mouthful there buddy. Love your videos and can't wait for vids on the rest of the Dunk and Aeg stories. You should do videos on Fire and Blood (by chapter?) Or the world book (by chapter? or subject?). Anyway big fan.
Ser Duncan is a true knight alongside Briene and Barristan compared to the other knights in Westeros. I love the theme that even though Duncan was never knighted he’s a knight at heart. The quote about all men are knights and all men are fools is true because being a knight can be considered foolish because you are risking your life for people you barely know and you could die yet it’s a good heart, mercy, chivalry, honoring women, bravery, and defending the helpless is what’s most important. Aerion I feel is an underrated villain because he represents the idea that just because your royal and knighted doesn’t mean your a good person. Also, Aerion getting upset about a puppet show depicting a heroic knight slaying an evil dragon is very petty. He harms an innocent woman for putting on a fictional puppet show. Duncan may not have been knighted but he’s a true knight at heart and even though Aerion is not a dragon there’s no doubt that he’s an evil dragon at heart. In a way, the tale of Ser Duncan and Aerion is the story of a brave heroic knight stopping an evil monstrous dragon in Westeros. Just my opinion.
Yezzir....and they are nearly done. Can't wait to see adaptation, got tired of dragons & wars that leads back to whos ruling the 7 Kingdoms. But rather this is side story that builds 2 characters who come across famous houses, even the Targaryens, and quests. That all builds them to notable-legendary characters in the GOT universe.
Dunk is easily my favorite GoT character. I listened to the audio book version of all three novellas, and it's my favorite part of the series. I wish we got more additions to the series
I loved the stories so much that i even bought the book that collects all three of them. I can't get tired of these videos either, you're an amazing narrator!

I remembered when Dunk rode up to the trial of seven and the small folk shouted wishes and luck to him; prayed for him. “Why do they praise me”, “Because you’re a knight who remembered his vows”.
It's funny how serious these books seem with you doing your standard explain-voice. The actual stories were such a nice tonal shift when I first binged ASOIAF in the lead up to book 5's release.
I can't imagine a more complex world to adapt into a graphic novel.. wow, I'm truly impressed. To bring such a complicated world like westeros to life in comic book form is a massive undertaking. I'm a huge fan of comics and graphic novels and i was completely unaware that this existed. Thank you for making this video can't wait to grab a copy.

The Blackfyres will rise again! The Black Dragon turned red with rust!
There is comic books
A comparison between Joffrey and Aerion is interesting. Firstly, while Joffrey is foolish and shortsighted Aerion is actually crazy enough to drink wildfire. But, on the other hand, Joffrey is a coward but Aerion has actual combat skills and enjoys jousting, serves with the Second Sons and performs deeds of note in the 3rd Blackfyre Rebellion. Also when he requests the Trial of Seven he doesn't seem to do so from fear of Dunc. It seems like he simply enjoys the trouble and chaos he's spreading.
It is also a "Knightly" thing to do. The warriors way, from a weird point of view
Aerion is """""""""""""""""batter""""""""""""""""" Joffrey. If it's possible for someone like them to be good at something.
@@DesolatedChild018Ramsay, possibly?(especially in the books)
It's interesting, especially since Joeffrey isn't unskilled. At the beginning of a game of thrones is portrayed as equal to Robb in sparring despite being 12 to Robb's 14. He has the DNA, his father was fighting men at his age. He's just a textbook narcissist and needs praise to make up for his lack of confidence
Maester Aemon keep saying ‘Egg..’ is a memorable sad moment.
Yeah in the books before he dies he has a fever dream and says "egg i dreamed i was and old man" and then dies shortly after that. 😥
That moment in the show hits harder after reading The Hedge Knight kinda like when watching LOTR then seeing the Hobbit after and realizing who the dwarves were that defended Moria.
You know what's even sadder? If R+L=J that would mean Maester Aemon died without ever knowing Jon was his Great Great Grand Nephew
I personally like to think that If Jon is a Targaryen, that his name would be Aemon
I dreamed I was old!
The death of Baelor Breakspear upset me so much when I read the book years ago. Everything pointed to him being a good king for Westeros, the kind of king Westeros needed. I was more upset by his death than many of the deaths in A Song of Ice and Fire/GOT. Please cover the other books in the series.

I love the audiobook read by Harry Lloyd! I will always chuckle when Egg says „get him Ser! He‘s right there!“ everytime Dunk is in a fight.
Harry Lloyd does a great job with the audiobook!
"Are you blind or only stupid!?" Haha they were great.
Literal tears thinking of Dunc having left such a great legacy all the way to Jon and Brienne, what is wrong with me??
the Dunk and Egg tales are my favourite part of ASOIAF, and his whole story is pretty cool.
Lyonel sounds like a fun character, he’d make for a good mini series
Why are Dunk and Egg so likable? They are some my favorite characters from the series!!!
Without a doubt! They're unbelievably captivating
I'm still excited for the spinoff series, I just think it's a massive undertaking so soon after the end of GOT compared to what they could have done with Dunk & Egg--not to mention how divisive GOT ended up being at the end because of diversions from the books and an unknown ending (whereas we have an ending of Dunk & Egg at Summerhall no matter what)
Not nearly enough material
@@keridinsmore5181 yeah.
six 40 minute episodes, two for each novella. the third, The Mystery Knight, could even be 3 episodes.
EXACTLY. But the problem is, they wouldn't even have enough material for four episodes, nevermind multiple seasons. It's only three short stories so far.
@@johnhurley8918 pfft, they got more than enough for 2 episodes per novella, and a miniseries dont need a season 2
8:54 really caught me off guard, factually correct and hilarious. Lyonel is such a great background character.

This and "The House of the Worm" are probably my favorite short stories Martin did. Both just wonderful story telling and House of the Worm was able to build just an amazing world in so short a story.
Fun fact, Harry Lloyd is actually a descendent of Charles Dickens. It's rather poetic that he loves literature and narrates written entries in one of the most famous fantasy epics of all time.
@Anjelica Snorcket I agree. He was great in the show. However, while I hate what happened to the show in later seasons, I do think that they did his character justice since Viserys did die due to his own arrogance and impatience in the novels at around the same time frame in the same way.

2:25 Interesting. I never thought Dunk capable of lying especially not on his knighthood. I always interpreted these passages as him doubting himself and thinking he’s unworthy. Him not even beeing a knight makes so much sens though.
His legitimacy and his thoughts about it come up too frequently to be anything but a hint.

Yesss. I love the tales of Dunk and Egg. George said he wanted to write 9 more, he could have been exaggerating that number but that would be cool.
Lol @ the easter 'egg' at the end
I heard that GRRM wants a ninth book to the series of a song of ice and fire.
I never caught that Fossoway detail, it was never explained in the histories or the main series I thought GRRM just added it for flavor, but no even after all this time there's still things hidden in Asoiaf.
Isn't it great?!

You said a mouthful there buddy.
