I think Asmaa's transformation should have been garment of the week - it was stunning and unusual. And I seriously thought that Tony W had saved himself with his made to measure, which I thought was better than Vicki's...although I agree with Stuart that the whole round seemed flat. I thought Vicki was going to be sent home.

The sewing bee encouraged me to learn sewing. Is it in danger of turning newbies off?

I think Lauren's M2M was the most surreal. I also appreciated Mia's, Tony R's and Asmaa's takes on the Surrealist brief. I also thought, like many others that Asmaa's Transformation was stunning, a work of art in itself. I would have thrown a slipper in the Pattern challenge when Patrick said Fauve's applique was too literal with the flowers then gave a high placing to another with flowers.
Regarding the muted colours of Tony W's and Lauren's skirts, not all modernism was bright colours. What about Georgia O'Keefe for example? Modernism was such a big movement that the use of bright colors and high contrast was only a part.

Thanks Ting and Stuart...there was so much fodder for comment this week. I thought it was the most underwhelming made to measure section I've seen, mainly due to the brief. But...Mia's cloud dress looked more like a bath loofah, Vicki deserved some credit for the amount of mascara needed for the eyelash on her top, and as for GOTW... not even Stevie Nicks, the queen of leather and lace, would wear that. On second thought it might possibly be appropriate for a goth child's first communion. 😉 Roll on next week.

This week's Sewing Bee felt very 'blah', and I think for a couple of reasons.
Firstly overall, it felt like a design show. It's tipping over the edge from sewing with design inspiration, to full on design and conceptual creation with some sewing. There is maybe a place for that on TV (like a British version of project runway), but I hope they don't try and convert the Sewing Bee to this.
Pattern challenge: I liked Lauren's colour choices, she was very clear that she wanted that combo no matter what. I loved the gunmetal blue/petrol blue/teal colour. I also really liked Tony W's colours although I can see why the judges might not have liked them. But at this point, what should be judged, sewing skills, or design skills? Especially when materials are provided, and we don't know if the applique patches were limited in quantity.
Transformation challenge.... Oh boy. I hadn't thought too much about the garments that Tony W, Vicki, and Tony R had made, but Ting made a good case for Tony Ws garment to be scored higher. My question is this..... *Did* *Tony* *W* *get* *a* *lower* *score* *because* *of* *the* *canvas* *he* *had* *chosen* ?. Because his jacket was pale blue on white, and the higher scoring garments had more colour variety and pattern. And if this influenced the judges, then is that really fair? It really does feel sometimes that there are unwritten expectations for judging.
Made to measure: I loved Lizzie's jacket with the authentic kimono sleeve design (with the gaps in the armpits!😂). Sadly I don't think the skirt style really suited the jacket, and perhaps she could have used a different fabric to connote water. The problem with the boned underskirt was that the hoops were showing through the fashion fabric slightly, I think there needed to be more hoops but that's difficult to do in the time.
Loved Mia's cloud dress but agreed with Esme, it could have had more raindrops added.
Did not understand the GOTW choice. I think the bodice could have had more draping and folds if it was really going to reference the painting. And not very surreal.
Lauren's felt surreal to me, and also references recent high fashion trends. Remove the hanger and it's brilliant...
It might just be the theme this week, but I really didn't like the design-led focus. It feels unfair. Especially if, as I suspect, the judges are influenced by the colour and design *of* *the* *materials* *_they_*_ _*_provide_* *to* *the* *contestants*

Exactly what you said with what they are provided with. In the final or semi final 2 years ago Liz? Was marked down because they didn’t like the colour of the parachute she’d used when it was that or nothing because they’d provided it.

This week was for me like last weeks was for you Ting. I got so exasperated by the briefs in the pattern challenge so annoyed at how they said it was especially with the appliqué, in the transformation challenge both slippers, a pillow, a cushion and a pair of socks went as despite them saying that the art students knew what their canvases were being used for and what would happen to them it’s just no I wouldn’t have a canvas lying around to turn into a garment and I wouldn’t if I could actually sew use it for that either, maybe as a sculpture in itself but nope not for that. Then the m2m well how did Fauves ugly creation get garment of the week ? The problem with the bee is that it’s all filmed before airing with their being no way to feedback just exactly what we the viewer think of the judging.
It seems to me that the bee 🐝 is becoming more of a fashion student course or challenge rather than good old fashioned home sewing

Pattern Challenge - Abstract = Bright and bold apparently - not what the contestant views. Abstract is what you make it, and not looking at others and changing your mind. Tony W. could have been inspired by AF Klimt’s pastel abstracts😳

This is sort of sad to say, but I am enjoying Unpicked more than the GBSB. The contestants are wonderful and doing the best they possibly can with the most outlandish (IMHO) briefs ever. It's a wonder some of the sewers don't throw up their hands in defeat before they even begin. Although children's week isn't a favorite for some, I'm hopeful we'll see some sort of actual garment/sewing/skills presented come this Wednesday. Stuart and Ting, keep up the great commentaries. I love it.

haha you're not the first to say that Lilly-Ann! hahaha. I agree with you.....let's just have some amateur sewing like many of would make at home....that's the point of the show really. There are so many garments that could be made, the audience doesn't need outlandish briefs in order to want to watch. we watch as we love sewing. Simple.

You two have made such great points about the judging in this episode. The judging should not be a matter of personal taste. As you say, this is a sewing competition not a fashion design show.
As a side note, I did not learn art history in school. I would not have known the Modernist reference.

I didn't understand the modern or surrealist reference either. I had not idea what the garments were representing. The only one I liked and would have worn, was Tony R's little black dress, and I'm 70. I didn't think the judges would like it as it was too simple.

I was disappointed Tony W went home. I thought it should have been Vicki as both her transformation and M2M were very poor. I couldn’t see how Fauve’s dress in the M2M reflected the painting she’d chosen but I was glad she did well for once. Her leather and lace dress looked more rock chick than surreal though. I thought Asmaa’s transformation should have been garment of the week as it was so inspired and brilliant.

  • @Neil_Richardson

  • @EVERBEE_SEWING_BEE
    @EVERBEE_SEWING_BEE Рік тому +5

Hello, A bit of a shocker about Tony W, I had him as a finalist! Just goes to show you can have a bad week, and you're out. That said, I too thought he should have been placed higher in the Transformation challenge. Both he and Lauren were harshly judged over their colour choices. Modernism isn't primary school colour schemes.
I do wish they went into more depth about appliqué techniques. Lovely (and very expensive) silk skirts, ruined by juvenile flower shaped appliqué, which appears to have no bearing on the Modernist/Moderism art overall theme.
Although a little bit dull this episode, it was still far better than the 'Crochetgate' episode. Looking ahead, the themes for episodes 6 & 7 don't appear not to be that interesting either. Surely they can think of more interesting things to make than a little girl's dress for kids week. 90s week has me worried as well.
Slippers thrown - 3, 2 for inconsistent judging in the first 2 challenges and 1 for too abstract a brief for the M2M challenge.

Hi Stuart and Ting! I can finally join you after being away and having to catch up on five weeks’ worth of three one-hour shows each, only to now arrive in an inspired-by week that is wedged between RRR and the kiddies. I think you two (or three? since The Pen seems to have a mind of its own) are doing a great job - I think you’ve found your format ;-)
I liked this week’s pattern challenge a lot (would never wear that skirt, but we learned something), the other two were where the Sewing Bee became the Design Bee yet again. But I reckon we’re used to that now, and I can appreciate them coming up with new ideas. Although my reaction to the last challenge was the same as yours, Stuart: here come the eyes.
As for the sewers, I reckon Mia and Asmaa will probably make it to the final; and I really like Tony R, but the cynic in me fears that he’ll never be a judge’s favourite. I like how he’s got a style that shines through in practically everything he makes, but in a far more subtle way than in previous series (the black 90s and the ditzy puffed sleeves being the most obvious). His dress this week was a perfect example, I thought it really clever, and a much more interesting interpretation of surrealism than sewing two enormous eyes onto a random garment.
I’m looking forward to next week (you more than the actual show, I'm not interested in kids' clothes either). Ting, my slippers are ready as ever; Stuart, keep up the penmanship ;-)

I thought we had some unusual and interesting challenges on this week's GBSB with the transformation round (the one I usually like least) being my favourite! The Bees made some incredible garments and I thought Asmaa's top was hands down the garment of the week. Poor TonyW, he should not have gone home this week. They may not have liked his colour scheme but at least his waistband was correct (I forget who made the skirt too small for the manakin but they should have been last!) and how on earth did his transformation come last? What did the judges see that we did not? Or rather, what did they NOT see? I also thought they were very dismissive of TonyBs transformation and his m2m. Some very strange judging this week 😞
I don't really agree with Ting's view about the less conventional rounds, it is interesting to see something new, but I do agree that they should not wander too far from what we really want to see - the sewing and that the judging should be more about the sewing and less about "the story" or a Bee's understanding of an art movement.

  • @MariekevanBuytene
    @MariekevanBuytene Рік тому +1

For the transformation challenge, I can repeat my comment from last week (RRR) here: they could have used scaffolding canvas instead of painting canvas, which also comes in colorful designs (building-sized adverts) and is something that is actually otherwise thrown away. For the made to measure, I thought Lizzies top was based on a kimono design and I would have loved to see that continued in the skirt. Cheers!

I found this weeks show very frustrating, and so unfair to the contestants. Your reference to The Great British Bake off was spot on. More and more complicated and outlandish briefs. I wonder how many home sewers who might have applied to be on the show will reconsider if the show carries on in this fashion?

  • @ValleyView007

I usually don't care for the transformation challenge, but I did enjoy this one. My only problem is - those canvases must be really uncomfortable to wear
I wonder what kinds of tools and notions are available to the sewists. I noticed a couple of them using walking feet, If I were doing the appliques, I'd use fusible interfacing on the back of the shapes to help prevent distortion, was that an option for them?

I agree with all you said. I must admit I went to bed Wednesday night wondering what I had just watched? Was it a sewing programme or a design show? I got annoyed because they said the canvasses had been commissioned. Those size canvasses are expensive and yet the transformation challenge is supposed to be about reusing items. There were some good items in all challenges but I did not like garment of the week, I much preferred Tony beanie and his black dress. I really think the format needs to be looked at now as I along with others I have seen FB comments from cannot get into this series at all.

Much to my surprise I really enjoyed art week, and I have to disagree with Ting. Home sewers don't always use patterns. I have sewn gear stick gaiters and sun visors for a classic car, door cards and dickie seat covers for a kit car. I have also sewn baby car seat covers, and when the children were at school I ended up creating Henry VIII, a chocolate Santa, maid Marion, Guy of Gisbourne and a fairy light to name but a few - all sewn without patterns. "Normal" garments usually have a pattern or a combination of patterns.

@ting.. Don´t argue about taking Paintings and suggest taking handpainted fabric. There is a lot of effort in both. Canvas is just a thicker fabric painted with acrylic paint. . I am painting on canvas and you just cannot hang all the pictures on a wall (except you have large white walls). I would be proud if there was such a spectacular and unexpected use of my paintings. Specially as apinting and sculputing are combined. You do not get that with handpainted "fabric" as this is most often silk or other "lightweight" fabric.
I really think about sewing my old pictures up into handbags or the back of a jeans jacket....☺🎨🪡🧵🧥👜

In previous seasons folks have made coats, French style jackets and formal gowns for the made to measure so I don't think a dinner jacket or any jacket, would be too difficult. Sad to see Tony W go as I thought he was one of the better ones. I think the silly theme just threw him off his stride

I'd love a slipper throwing machine it would save me so much time

Gimmicky or creative... these items are less extreme than some things you see on the Catwalk. This week was better than the crochet because the artists knew their canvasses were going to be cut up. Though again I think using old things to make new is OK if there is respect for the original. The transformation is just that... a transformation - something into something else. We get to see sewing skills artistic ability and creativity in the 3 challenges. and this challenge is the most creative. There was a children's costume - like a grey ghost in the Transformation challenge which won garment of the week.

Art week, mmmm I did not enjoy the episode 🙁. Again I agree with Ting, re transformation challenge, the painted canvas was going to cause issues with the sewing machine, just like the crochet challenge last week. Domestic sewing machines can't handle these heavy fabrics, maybe they should have been provided with industrial machines. I hope new sewers don't try this at home! TonyW definitely should have been higher!

Perhaps they should change the title of the programme from Sewing Bee to something else, because the sewing aspect seems to have taken a step back. I agree with Ting about not being a designer. I've always used patterns and maybe a little tweek here and there. Just because you can't design or are not too creative doesn't mean you can't sew. I think Tony W could have lasted a lot longer if it was more about sewing, even Vicky said she has trouble thinking about creating things. I'm not into art and wouldn't have had a clue about modernism or surrealism, I had no idea what the 'eye' was all about. I liked Tony's black dress, I'm 70 and I would wear that, maybe because I'm old and boring, but it was wearable.

Sorry Ting but I disagree with your design comment. I'm a firm believer that if you can sew you can make anything. The sewing bee is confirming this idea. It is a competition they are pushing the contestants creativity. As you can see from the comments and the 'controversial' challenges is getting everyone talking about sewing. Brilliant 😊

Asmaa’s didn’t work, too much like a string vest. Fauve, What? Did they feel sorry for her, therefore GOTW

Find Sarah Pascoe very irritating as presenter and not in the slightest bit funny. Puts me off show. Miss Joe Lycett.😢
