How to Propagate a Snake Plant - Dividing Pups

  • You can propagate a snake plant by dividing up the pups. Start by removing the pot from your snake plant and breaking up the soil around the roots. Gently massage the soil away from the stalk that attaches the mother plant to the baby plant. Once you have removed enough soil to see that rise home that connects to the baby, you can then cut it directly in the middle between the mother plant and pup.
Once you have cut away and remove the babies from the mother snake plant, you can then put them in smaller individual pots with their own soil. Remember that snake plants are succulents and they demand a fast draining soil. It is advised to mix up your own soil that’s fast draining or you can buy a premixed, cactus and succulent mix. When putting the pups into their individual pots, make sure to have enough soil to cover all of the roots and that rise song that you cut away from the mother plant.
This method of propagating, a snake plant has the highest potential and success rate. This is because the entire route system of the new plant is already established. For the first couple of months trying to water your new snake plant propagation’s when necessary. The new baby plants demand more water than an older plan would.
    Leaves are Falling Over
    • Snake Plant Leaves are...
There are three ways to propagate a snake plant, and this is the most effective way. You can do a leaf cutting in water or you can put a leaf cutting in soil or you can cut away the babies from the mother plan like this method. The method of propagating the snake plant babies from the mother plant has the highest success rate because the root structure is fully grown and all you’re doing is transferring it to a different pot.

Thanks for the information. I browsed about 10 other videos before I came to yours; thank you for actually talking about snake plant pups and not a billion other things. I bought my husband a snake plant yesterday for his office and I purposely picked one that had a pup so I can keep a little one for myself. 😊

I came here bc I love having plants but have no idea how to care for them. I have a snake plant that I bought a few years ago. She has so many babies and I needed to report her. The roots are throughout the soil and I was trying to be so careful. It's good to know that I can cut. I need to learn the very basics.

I found one growing under my bungalow house. I potted a few in a pot because they looked cool. Now, I'm definitely addicted to plants. I love buying discounted pots that have 3 or four different plants in at Walmart that cost $5. And now I have 30 plants from $5.

Thank you for this video House Plant Therapy….you’re exactly right you hit the nail on the head for me. I started collecting my house plants about a year ago. I have 30😊 I purchased a Sansevieria about 3 weeks ago for $20. It had 3 4 inch pups surrounding it. I knew I was going to repot them, 4 sansevieria for $20! Great deal right?! I knew I couldn’t go wrong. This is a gorgeous plant. I just want to make sure I do it correctly. I went online searching for video as a guide. I selected your video. You and your girlfriend done an awesome job. Easy and straightforward. Thank you! Here’s my question keep in mind I am a novice, so the question may sound silly; if I am putting these 4 inch pups in 6 inch pots will they eventually grow into a large house plants like the mother and if so, how long will that take? I’m just curious. I am re-potting into a house plant soil that I have added perlite and warm castings to. I use this mix for all of my house plants that I repot and it’s worked beautifully. I also put a forest moss as a top dressing for all of my plants. What are your thoughts about that? Sorry so long. This is my therapy/ ministry. Thanks again!

All I wanted to know was if I should give the pup a good watering once it's been moved to a new pot! 😭 Does a good soak help it recover more quickly from being divided? Or should I leave it dry? (What will help the new roots re-establish themselves the best?)

I’m not really a plant person, partly because I have a small house with not much space for plants. My daughter keeps buying me plants, however. The snake plant she bought me last Mother’s Day is now jammed tightly into the pot it came in. Time to repot/divide it. My question, after watching your video, is, is there a way to get the starts in the center of their pots, rather than the side? Thanks!

I have a MASSIVE mother plant I have no idea what to do with and would love some suggestions! I got my mother plant two years ago and it has exploded. I bought it as one of my beginner plants and it has since tripled in size. I potted it in a super big planter. Now that I have more knowledge on plants, I would love to get some pups from the mother plant. How do you suggest I remove the pups since it's so big? It weights probably about 30 lbs (probably around 50 lbs when wet).... I have no idea what to do with it but it's getting huge 😂 taking it out of this huge planter seems impossible. PLEASE HELP 😅 if you have an Instagram I can also send you a picture of it so you can see what we're working with lol
