Also new to this and watched a couple of other videos from different creators…. This is by far the least dramatic and most matter of fact. Thank you. I appreciate your style.
Thank you for the excellent video and answering new comments on an older video (I do that too on my channel too). I have 10 brown thumbs 😂, but love this plant, and so far even I, the killer of all plants, have managed to keep 4 alive!! Thanks again!!
Great video, thank you! I've recently repotted my snake plant, and despite the soil looking dry, very close to the roots it was still wet... now I'm wondering how to recognise when the plant really need water 🤔
I’ve had snake plants that haven’t been watered in a couple months (on accident) totally dry, and others that have been watered right and all have had orange roots. I always thought the orange roots were normal. Never had any issues
Hey! I have come to learn also that a mild orange is fairly common, however in my specific plants case, it was very soggy and starting to rot which was past the normal colours and into a darker orange /brown. Thanks for the comment, as someone reading will find your information helpful!
Great video! Question: When you divide Sansevieria, this presumably creates new wounds. Do you need to avoid watering the new divisions to avoid rot? If so, for how long? Thanks!
Hi, I have learned and heard both to let dry and that watering is also ok. I only water lightly and then let the soil dry out quite a bit before watering again. Ymmv but seems to work alright.
Thank you for showing us novices how to do this. Mine is in bloom at this point. I read that’s really rare. Should I wait with separating and repotting till it’s done blooming?
I would wait to propagate just because it’s flowering but I doubt it would make a difference with success of separating. You would lose the flowering of you chose to! 🎉 Very rare from my experience. So far I have had zero flowering and I have quite a few of these snake plants.
@@plntfriends Thank you man, Yes I read that they rarely flower. I have left it in the pot and will wait with separating the plant till after it's done blooming. Thanks again for responding!
Can actually say im an early sub. I also make videos and am a smaller channel as well! Keep up the good work brother. I just started collecting plants. I have some pothos, an umbrella tree cutting & a money tree. This will probably be my next addition.
Thank you so much for this video! I have watched so many other ones but non tells me how much water after the repot, and that orange roots means it’s too much water. I have divided mine today which few are already rot from the roots but I didn’t repot them into few smaller pots just some separations and I decided to water both some not much. hope it survives. I didn’t cut but just snapped by hands on the roots, and threw away some that are really orange looking, is that too harsh to the plant?
My snake plant is looking pretty crowded and so I was thinking about dividing it. Most directions I have seen don't specify a time of year to do this, does it matter?
@@plntfriends I am not sure if this question can be answered online and without pictures... I had divided my snake plant a few weeks ago and it so far has been successful! The only problem is that one of the rhizomes didn't have roots. I wasn't sure what to do at the time, so I left it connected to one other rhizome and repotted them together. (5 out of 6 of them had what looked to be a normal amount of roots.) It looks like the one without roots is fading in color and some of the ends of the leaves are yellowing. I do not recall seeing any black spots on the rhizome or major discoloration, just a lack of roots. (I consider myself one to underwater rather than over water.) But as it appears to be dying, I am thinking I might divide it from the healthy one and repot it, and then try to propagate the leaves from the dying one in case it is a fungus. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
@@magenta6480 hi, sorry for the delay in answering. If it were mine, I would separate it from the otherand put the end in a cup of water or a perlite box. It should sprout roots from the rhizome with a little time but need to keep it moist/ humid. Good luck!
I managed to kill a very old and extremely large snake plant. Ive since bought new smaller younger ones. One of the centre leaves was loose when i bought it. Its still healthy and not soft near to the soil. I may try and divide the plant as you did and take out the loose leaf and repot it. Fingers crossed i dont kill this one. Did you use a multi purpose compost or a mixture with sand and grit?????
I just used a regular potting soil with a bit cactus mix. I rarely water the snake plants and so I’m not at risk of over watering them. A good soil is cactus or some coco coir mixed in for good drainage. Wishing you success!✌🏻
I have snake plant that has lived and thrived in large clay pot for FIFTEEN years, without out being repotted or fertilized. I KNOW. Go figure. It sets in my large foyer that gets a lot of indirect sun. Plus I probably forgot to water it so much it did better than it might have otherwise. Some of its stalks are about 4' tall. Some 1-2ft. I'm think I am going to get multiple plants from this guy. Question is: Should I move the ones with the tallest stalks?
You could also consider cutting the tallest stalks down and propagating them into new pots. That would leave it a bit more even and also provide multiple plants to grow. From the sounds of it, your snake plant is a beauty! ✌🏻
Is there anything you can do if you the leaves are so tall they won't stay up any more? Mine keep growing very tall and then loosing the balance of the plant.
My Sanseveria plant seems to have an aversion to water! I started new plants from older leaves in soil. The new baby plants were doing well, until a bout with Thrips destroyed 2 of the four small plants. Now, it seems, even if I give the plants minute amounts of water, the leaves will turn yellow, from outer, to inner. The third.plant died like this! But it left a tiny little sprout, before dying. Now, the fourth, and last plant is touchy to water! I'm affraid to water it. The tiny one has one yellow leaf, and one green one! IDK, feeling very discouraged at this point.
I am sorry to hear you are having issues with your plant. It sounds as though there could be a root issue. Have you tried to remove from the soil and replant in new soil? Might be worth a shot, as well could use hydrogen peroxide to deal with any root rot fungus or pests. I have never had a sanseveria turn yellow but that would be where I check first.
Thank you for replying. This all started, when I discovered tiny black Thrips were gouging into the plant's leaves. The Thrips are now dealt with, but 2 of the 3 plants have died! The remaining plant is small, and kind of fragile. I've replanted in recently, and the roots looked good, no evidence. of root rot. If this plant dies, I won't get another Sanseveria. Thank you so much for the tips! Aloha! 💟🤙
How much of that white base root can I trim down? I have three plants that arent connected and I would like to center them in the pot, but the really long white part of the roots doesnt allow for positioning. Its like the length of a number 2 pencil. Thanks!
Hi, I have a plant emergency! My 8 year old snake plant need to be reported and divide as it has grown significantly. This will be the 1st time I’ll be dividing and realized that the roots are sorta like in a loop and not sure where to cut. Any email I can reach out to you to send a video sample. Please?!!!
Hi, Should be able to follow the same principles as I use to cut the root in the video. Make sure there is roots for the cut portion. Doesn’t have to be exact or perfect. Plants will do ok. If still have questions let me know
Can you please tell me the best type of soil to use for a snake plant? I'm currently looking at Burpee Organic potting soil and theres a few choices...thanks 😊
Hi, I would choose something with good drainage that won’t stay too wet. Moisture control or even a cactus mix works quite well. Can also mix in some extra perlite to regular potting soil. Wish you success!
I don’t know why but my snake plant soil never dries out. I haven’t watered it in about 2 months and it’s doing fine and looks great but I wonder if it will ever want water😆
I have heard that deliberately planting a sanseviera in a small pot causes shoots to grow from the rhizome far more quickly than is normal. Have you any views on this ?
Hey John! Yeah I would believe that from my experiences with propagating them and the different containers I have used in the past. Same with the ZZ plant. I find they put most of their energy into the roots until they get a bit bound by the pot and then start putting shoots up.
Hi Ellen, I would see how damp the soil is if it is coming in soil. If the soil is damp when you pot it then I would wait until the first inch or 2 of soil is completely dry. If it is a bare root cutting, then for sure give it a little bit of water when potting. Much love and Merry Christmas!
I got the whale fin sansaveria today! It's lovely! It is 19 inches tall and lovely. One problem was a 4 inch split from the top. It was healed. Didn't happen in transit. Should I be concerned about it splitting more. Is there anything in the plant world that can be used to repair it. Any advice is appreciated!thank you!
If it is in a pot with drainage holes, then I water until it’s is saturated and let the excess run off. You want to thoroughly water when only water so often.
@@samiam3706 that is too often for these plants unless you are barely giving any water. How large is the pot the plant is in? You need to estimate what it would take to water well but not leave water sitting in the bottom.
