Thank you, Scotty. For giving me another reason to avoid buying a modern ICE car. Old cars also are money pits. I am buying a KIA EV6. I am going to get it in 3 days
Hey Scotty, Funny thing happened a year ago, Several houses down my street a pickup in a driveway would not start. They ask me for a jump. Several people standing around. Already jumped twice with no results. I walked up and twisted the cables a little and one came off in my hand. I told them THERE is the cause of the problem. Fix those loose cables first. Then everyone looked at me like I was a Martian. Over 50 years back my father in law said just about what you said here. Check the cables first.
The same thing happened to my son in law. He called one of those car starting companies and it started. Before he bought a new battery he asked me if I could check it. I did, it was good. Turned out to be a loose battery terminal.
A similar thing happened to me. As that was walking by I noticed a car with the hood up. The driver said it wouldn’t start. I noticed one of the battery terminals was loose. I pulled out my Leatherman, clean the terminal and the battery and put it back on and tightened it with my Leatherman. It started right up.
It's not just loose cables, but almost any corrosion on the terminals can prevent a car from starting. My first move is always to clean the posts and cables with a wire brush tool (or use sandpaper), then reinstall & tighten. Maybe coat with some petroleum jelly after. If it still doesn't turn over, then charge it or jump start.
I recently retired a 1999 GMC van. The battery is 9 years old and still tests like a new battery. When the battery was 1 year old, I hard wired a small solar panel on the roof of the van, that delivers 3 Watts of trickle charge to the battery when the sun shines. I am fully convinced that the daily trickle charge has kept the battery healthy and it has never been boosted or let me down.
You don't live in the South. Down here in FL once the battery has 3 years on it you better be replacing it (and there's NOTHING you can do about it the battery is dated).
@@leecowell8165 What is it about Florida that kills batteries in 3 years. If you buy a battery that is fully warranteed for 5 years, you should never have to buy another battery as long as you live.

@@terry_willis yes, batteries usually don’t last over 100k miles anymore. Mine made it 118k, and almost 7 years old. Had a friend who had a Jeep Cherokee back in 2014 and needed a new battery a year later soo
I personally like the 12v solar panel battery trickle chargers. They have adapters to either plug right into your 12v plugin in your vehicle, to cables to use for independent batteries. Don't have to worry about overcharging or electricity either, albeit it does rely on having the sun out (which most times during the day isn't an issue)
You are using one then? How many watts is it? I jsut ordered a 10w but Im not sure it will be enough juic. I assume you have tested and had a while so youre sure its actually providing enough power to put some charge into battery. Let me know you results, thanks.
@@5FWS510 watts is a good size to keep your battery topped off and fully charged especially if your car sits for days without driving it. I've been using solar chargers for years successfully. They don't charge up a dead battery though. Plus it needs direct sunlight for full output.
IDK your experience nor what exact charger you use, but I do the same, because its obviously a great idea. But I keep mine parked on the rear shelf, and once in a while I check for voltage at the alligator clamps and it uniformly reads "17V". I have no idea if that's good or bad, or even if it's enough voltage to achieve the desired results, esp since its probably the OHMS getting to the battery not mere voltage that charges up the battery, I think. IDK enough about electrical to know if it even matters. I have my Lexus garaged and on a trickle charger when it sits idle, since if there's any kind of car that has a large parasitic draw its a big Lexus - but again IDK how much, if any, it helps the battery life.

Good day Scotty! I am a fan of ur channel! Good solid hard truths contents. I just replaced my Volvo new alternator($1000) and it spoiled in a month due to my 2years old car battery (AGM) cannot retain charges. My best advice is to change your car battery every 2 years. No battery will last for more than 4-5Years! Old battery will wear your alternator prematurely and they are 3-4 times more expensive than a new battery. When u changed new/used alternator and your battery is almost 2 years old ,change the battery altogether. Imagine if I were a battery company to wait to sell u another new battery after 4-5 years my company will go bankrupt! My honest advice/experience for car owners who loves thier cars!
Re: Battery terminals. I have seen terminals that are loose even when tightened. Over time, the terminal gets stretched. I have cut a piece of metal from a soda can to use as a shim around the post.
Great advice for a flat tire, but what if the tire is ruined with a huge hole in it, the tire inflator won't work. My advice is if you have a car without a spare tire, then you buy a spare tire for your car

I bought the battery operated DeWalt tire inflator. Comes with battery charger. Works great. Make sure battery is always charged. I charge up my auto battery every couple of months to a full 100 percent charge with my battery charger. Takes under a half hour to fully charge the car battery. Fully charged battery will last longer.

The circuitry in the alternated controls the level of charge. I've looked at it myself (on that motor). Resetting does something, but it doesn't control the level of charge.
I also like this black and decker 12v batt recondition charger. Every once or twice run the recondition mode on it and the battery lasts longer. Ive had Oreillys tell me i need a new battery but so far 2 batteries still work. You don't want the voltage to get under 1.26v and sit like that for long.
I have Autel system and did not realize that, I have slightly older cars, but will check this now, just changed the battery and noticed the factory battery was AGM, so replaced with another AGM. Scotty, thanks.
I have a 25ah lithium hybrid battery. My car has never started so quickly. Those supper caps make the difference. Fantastic for a car that only goes through a couple of tanks of fuel each year
How about using jumper cables from another 12v battery to hook onto the + and - leads. Loosen off the lead from the bad battery, place the jumped leads carefully aside, remove old battery, install new one and hook up still jumped leads. After tightening, remove jumper cables. All info and comp. modules should still be the same.
Scotty, My son’s 2007 Toyota Camry XLE V6 just turned 200k miles. There’s a problem that we can’t find any one to figure out. The front end shakes as you get up to 40ml/he. Took it to Toyota dealer, they don’t know what’s wrong with it and they still charged almost $1000. The tires still have good tread life. Someone said to replace tires. We just put four brand new tires still shaking. It’s not the ball joints. Any idea what this can be. This car still runs great
2:30 Memory saver? Never used one. What worked for me was before I remove the terminal connector to the dead battery, I'd have one extra 12v battery and clip it straight to the terminal connector. Never had any problems at all.
Lawn mower batteries can be lots of problems cause people do not use them during the winter months. Most lead acid batteries, be it AGM or flooded self discharge 4 to 12% a month. The AGM is better at not self discharging as much, about 4 to 6% a month. The flooded cells have to be maintained with float charges if stored for long periods of time. Also the flooded cells when not maintained and the voltage is left below 12 volts for a month are more, crystals start to form on the plates and start to degrade the lead plates. The only way to correct the problem is use that battery tender are a charger that has a pulse charge feature, are a electrolyte additive. There are many videos of people adding epsom salt to a flooded, yes it may gradually clean the plates but it also messes up the chemical process in the electrolyte in the battery.
I worked for (delivery driver) Johnson Controls which owns 80% of replacement battery production including Optima AGM or assembled glass mat. When originally built these battery's lasted 20 plus years. Now made in Mexico they are designed to last just past the 5 year warranty. Sad.
Scotty, do a video about all the Teslas dying out in the cold in droves here in Chicago! 🥶 The stupid EV’s won’t take a charge in the Arctic temps, stranding dozens of cars that died out!
my 2014 mazda 3 retained all my settings from bluetooth and safety stuff, only thing i lost were the trip a, b info etc. Mazda thinks ahead with little things but i do need to go check make sure my new agm is registered so im glad i saw this video.
as long as it isn't one of those that need a small amount of back voltage to make them work, I know I'm not Scotty but have had about 36 years of experience starting with old 60's to about 2010 and after that I quit, because tools cost too much and everyone wants hamburgers today and never pay on Tuesday, but hope that helps
thanks so much for your response. Good to know because I have a few of these little jumps starters and have used them a time or two. Hi Scotty, I hope you can share some info for me. I have a 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross HEV. I was wondering if it's safe or I could charge my 12V battery like any regular cars do? Like the one you shared on this video. If yes, where is it safe to connect, directly thru the 12V battery terminals or to the jump post in the engine bay area? Thanks! I hope you take notice of my comment.
Just replaced the original battery from my 2013 corolla 150k miles and 12 years later. I live in Massachusetts so the weather was not kind to it either.
Oh... 2013 Buick, original battery, now it's 2024 so that's 11yo and still seems to be going strong. Cranks and starts in literally 1sec when I bap the button.
That battery is on borrowed time . Modern era automotive flooded lead acid batteries will operate perfectly until they leave you stranded. Change it out now.
Good advice. I had a problem that might help others: Started my Lexus one morning and it sputtered, backfired, smoked, etc. and I quickly shut it down. CEL, stability control, ABS and some other light(s) came on. Hell of a mess. Tried once more and same thing. Had it towed to my mechanic who tried to start it and everything was fine. He couldn't find anything. I couldn't pick the car up that day so I stopped by the following morning. Turned the key and all hell broke loose again. Then, of course, we both had the lightbulb moment. The key was that both instances occurred after having sat all night. Sure enough, load tested the battery and 2 cells were weak. A new battery fixed everything. Now I load test the battery 3x a year even when everything seems OK. One battery tested weak and was replaced under warranty.
What's a " modern " car? I miss my 94 ram v6. No frills.. just simple and dependable. My 06 Denali is on probation.. if it makes it to spring time. 18 years old.. ALMOST a classic.
I have a Corvette. Replacing batteries in these temperamental cars can throw off all kinds of sensors and settings. Horror stories include the car not starting at all. A memory saver is a must for this task!
Did I see a USB port on that compressor? I can think of a lot of applications for that little thing. Especially if it goes as long as Scotty says. I'm going to check it out right now.🤠
Great video, Scotty. But, how accurate is that Yantu? With almost every tire inflator I have tried, the PSI seemed only a guess when checked with against an accurate gauge.
We have a AGM deep cycle battery that we use as a backup to operate fan motor on LPG stove when grid power fails. If we`re lucky it will operate 100 watt fan for 18 hours to keep farmhouse warm until grid power is restored. Thankfully we drive old antique trucks that don`t have any of this complicated computer controlled nonsense! Our tractors are 72 years old, gas powered,as well with points/ condenser ignition as well as the 1970 C10 P/U. Our 89 S10 Blazer is the only truck with a OBD1 computer thankfully.
only way to go but depends on blazer, carb or that stupid actual throttle body injection or that useless SPIDER INJECTION, carb or throttle was more reliable than the new trash in the 90's
Would the battery on a 2005 Ford 500 need to be rest? I just replaced the $200 2 year Die Hard on my daughters vehicle today. Same battery that used to be $50 $60 5 year warranty. When I was her age!
Memory savers are not for all car I have one that tells you if it save to use on the car and so far it did not work on any of the cars I worked on it may work on very old cars, tires go flat for s reason you should have an air pump / tire repair kit and a spare tire.
So say I bought an AGM battery 1 year ago for my Lexus IS and did not reset the computer as you suggested in this video. Is it too late to do that process now that I have one of those scan tools?
None of them work. Stick and stab is ok for temporary use. Tire shop should charge around 33 bucks to fix it. Mini compressor won't really work if it's a big leak.
Beware of suggesting "tightening as much as you can." Some people might take this to heart by torquing to the point of snapping the bolt. I know because I've done it. Of course I was young and foolish - not that those terms necessarily go together. But they often do.
SCOTTY - Cant I just hook my jumper cables from a second 12v battery and attach other ends to vehicle cable battery clamps before I disconnect starter battery? Thanks
@@mikehammer2075 huh? If you put 2x 12v batteries on to the cable terminals, the system will receive 24v until you take the terminals off the battery in the car. It would literally be the same as putting a 24v battery in your car.

Thanks a lot for the memory saver tip Scotty!!!
talking about modern cars, how come they cannot sense the state of the battery. it is not so difficult
I charge mine once a month. Set it up at night, then take it all off in the morning.
What year did this battery registering occur for Ford Explorer Scotty ?? Nice video too.
I have a yaberauto 6000A lithium jumper with a very bright light and an autel pump I keep in my trunk, both work excellent with no issues
Wait, so I should or shouldn’t put honey on my battery terminals? Both negative and positive? Would Manuka honey work better? Thanks.
Shouldn't. That's just the thumbnail lol. Doing that will just invite a bunch of ants into your car lol
make sure its unfiltered local honey, with propolis
@@ForPlanetEarthLLC Should help with the cars allergies too I think! Thanks.
Very instructive video, Scotty. Very useful tips, love and appreciate your insights 👍
I have a 25ah lithium hybrid battery. My car has never started so quickly. Those supper caps make the difference. Fantastic for a car that only goes through a couple of tanks of fuel each year
What's that battery / charging system?
How about using jumper cables from another 12v battery to hook onto the + and - leads. Loosen off the lead from the bad battery, place the jumped leads carefully aside, remove old battery, install new one and hook up still jumped leads. After tightening, remove jumper cables. All info and comp. modules should still be the same.
There's a device that does this exact same thing. Forgot the name.
Thats not what hes talking about. The computers would run funny for a while but it would run okay once it relearns settings. AGM isnt part of that.
Ive seen plugs for your cigarette lighter that have a small battery.
So the method might actually work.@@TrumpIsrael2024
So you have to place the new battery with the jumper cables attached to it? Sounds tricky to not shortcircuit.
Scotty,
My son’s 2007 Toyota Camry XLE V6 just turned 200k miles. This car still runs great
sounds like that faulty torque converter that they had on those model years. i think scotty did a vide on it once
All great stuff Scotty, Thank You so much ❤🙏
2:30 Memory saver? Never used one. What worked for me was before I remove the terminal connector to the dead battery, I'd have one extra 12v battery and clip it straight to the terminal connector. Never had any problems at all.
4:46 “When it’s loose all kinds of things can go wrong”
A lesson all men learn at some point 😅
🤣
😅😅
Sad.
I use the battery tender once every two months if not once a month. It’s worth it
Batteries only last 18-24 months in Phoenix due to the heat. And I drive and old vehicle.
@@phillipbanes5484 I’ve never heard of this until seeing this. My car runs beautiful right now so I might not need to.
In Trinidad and Tobago it's a hundred dollars just for a mechanic to hook up a scan tool. Doesn't matter if it's an expensive tool or a cheap one.
Only drive older vehicles. _Restore - don't replace_ 😉👌
Scotty, I have a 2013 Lexus Rx350. Are you considering that a newer vehicle for battery purposes?
Scotty. Could you use a 12 volt lawn mower battery to do this? Or would it not have enough amp hour capability? Thanks!
Thanks, Scotty!
Scotty, can you define "Modern"? 2015? 2011? 2001?
That's why I'm glad both of my cars were made before the year 2000 lol.
Scotty, can I use a car battery jump starter instead of a regular car battery when hooking up the OBD memory saver to change out my old battery?
as long as it isn't one of those that need a small amount of back voltage to make them work, I know I'm not Scotty but have had about 36 years of experience starting with old 60's to about 2010 and after that I quit, because tools cost too much and everyone wants hamburgers today and never pay on Tuesday, but hope that helps
thanks so much for your response. Good to know because I have a few of these little jumps starters and have used them a time or two. They work great and now I know I can use them when I'm swapping out batteries. It's OK that you're not Scotty answering my question, just don't tell anyone it was you, and I won't either.@@watup110875 😇
Yes
Hi Scotty, I hope you can share some info for me.
I have a 2024 Toyota Yaris Cross HEV. I was wondering if it's safe or I could charge my 12V battery like any regular cars do? Like the one you shared on this video.
If yes, where is it safe to connect, directly thru the 12V battery terminals or to the jump post in the engine bay area?
Thanks!
I hope you take notice of my comment.
I like the yantu compressor
What happens if you put a newer AGM battery in an older car with OBD1?
Good stuff 👍
Good stuff Scotty!
What's a " modern " car?
I miss my 94 ram v6. No frills.. just simple and dependable.
My 06 Denali is on probation.. if it makes it to spring time.
18 years old.. ALMOST a classic.
good stuff Scotty.
@scottykilmer
Do you suggest using dielectric grease on battery posts and wires?
Have a 2020 mustang gt. Had it for about 3 years now, so when does a car battery start wearing down?
Thought you were done streaming
How do you know if your car has a BMS?
Memory savers are not for all car I have one that tells you if it save to use on the car and so far it did not work on any of the cars I worked on it may work on very old cars, tires go flat for s reason you should have an air pump / tire repair kit and a spare tire.
9:58 Thank you Scotty 😩
The Honey thing worked!
So say I bought an AGM battery 1 year ago for my Lexus IS and did not reset the computer as you suggested in this video. Is it too late to do that process now that I have one of those scan tools?
Funny how I did everything Scotty said on this video yesterday and he makes a video about it a couple hours later lol 😂
Can you use a battery in another vehicle with the memory saver? I don't have and don't want an extra 12v battery sitting around
If you have second vehicle or find someone nice enough to let you it will, just don't let positive touch no part of metal
Do these chargers stay good if stored in a cold environment in the winter?
Thanx for all your knowledge and tips Scotty. You can even make girls interested in all this stuff😂
Buy a good 2016. Strip it down to frame.. rebuild.
what good is a tire/air pump for a flat tire that has a hole/nail or whatever in it ? Are the seal kits they sell (some cars come with) any good ?
None of them work. Stick and stab is ok for temporary use. Tire shop should charge around 33 bucks to fix it. Mini compressor won't really work if it's a big leak.
Beware of suggesting "tightening as much as you can." Some people might take this to heart by torquing to the point of snapping the bolt. I know because I've done it. Of course I was young and foolish - not that those terms necessarily go together. But they often do.
SCOTTY - Cant I just hook my jumper cables from a second 12v battery and attach other ends to vehicle cable battery clamps before I disconnect starter battery? Thanks
No. You'll fry the system with 24v.
@@CadillacDriver It's in parallel not series
I was just about to say that.
@@mikehammer2075
@@mikehammer2075 huh? If you put 2x 12v batteries on to the cable terminals, the system will receive 24v until you take the terminals off the battery in the car. It would literally be the same as putting a 24v battery in your car.
@@CadillacDriver mikehammer is correct. If you wire the batteries in parallel you get 12V. You get 24V if you wire them in series.
Hi Scotty. What mpdel is the Autel scanner?
Scotty great infovideos im fixing my lemon and im watching your info.thankyou
I received started using a solar trickle charger for my truck, time will tell if it helps
