      The reason that the stones soaked up so much water is that it is a porous stone.... lots of voids in it to hold the water.... Also, if you put it in a glass of water with one end above the water level, it will wick the water into the air.... kinda like a humidifier, but not as noticeable....

      @akakscase 3 роки тому +33

      Actually it does. A lot of your touch sense comes from resistance. If something pierces the very surface of your skin, but does it with a bit of resistance (like a fresh ground, but unpolished blade) it is going to feel more sharp than a polished blade at the same grind level. This is part of the reason you step up your grit level incrementally. You can get stone as high as 30,000 grit that will give your steel a mirror shine, and an unbelievable sharpness. Tyler is self admittedly not very practiced at using wet stones (his angle and technique were off) but if he practiced he could easily take the sharpness to a 20-40 with the stones he has. Also, if he gets a bulk grinder to hog a lot of the bulk metal off the bottom of the butter knife he could sharpen the entire length of the blade. Bulk grinders can be super cheap.

    • @onebackzach
      @onebackzach 3 роки тому +16

      I know exactly what he's talking about. When you sharpen on a very coarse abrasive, it basically frays the edge of the steel, and the ridges of your finger prints hang up on the wispy "wire edge" burr. When you polish that burr out, your finger stops hanging up on it and it feels dull, until you get it highly polished and very sharp, at which point your finger hangs up on the sharp edge again.

    It's actually hard to get a sharp edge on whetstones your first time. It takes some time to get an even edge on anything. What you should do at first is soak the stones for at least 5 minutes and it makes all the difference in the world 😂 I'm no expert on freehand sharpening but I am getting better! I find it easier to bring the blade towards myself instead of going away because I have better control. That being said I use a fixed angle system and I can get it down to 50 on one of those testers pretty easily. For your first time sharpening a blade like that, a freakin butter knife of all things, you did a great job Tyler!

    • @andriod090
      @andriod090 3 роки тому

      Best thing to do is practice pushing the blade away from you. Once you feel semi confident, you can do a push-pull technique, just like the masters.
