- This vision has been in my head since I first stepped foot into the Kitchenette of the Airbnb. I am excited to show you the almost final result of the kitchen countertop! The herringbone pattern is no joke and was definitely a tedious undertaking but it was well worth the end result! Let me know what you think! Thanks for watching!

I think you should use the Marine quality sealer. They use it on boats, so since this is a sink area it should be perfect for you.
Ahh! I may have to look into it to be waterproof !
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher there is a 2 part food safe epoxy I used over Rustoleum counter top paint. It has lasted 5 years.
Why not just use the products used on butcher block counters? That’s food safe...
I think marine grade “spar varnish” might not be food safe, plus, in times past, it yellowed badly.
agreed! That is exactly what I was going to recommend, but also a thick resin!
Lauren, first I must say that, like everyone else, FANTASTIC idea AND execution!!!! Then I want to add that as someone around your mothers age, who has been diy-ing with what I had access to and with my father’s advice and help, YOU ROCK GIRL!!! To see what you have accomplished in so short a time with grit and determination, I am proud of you and I am certain your parents are too! You are amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
thank you so much! (: glad you enjoy! i appreciate your support!
I think it is gorgeous! I have been wanting to replace my kitchen counter, but I would be thrilled with this!
I think it’s gorgeous too! I admire your skill and perseverance as well as your expertise in working out how to complete jobs Lauren!
Love the herringbone pattern.
Just a thought, how about using the herringbone pattern throughout the bnb as well as the colour choice? You have the herringbone wall hooks for the hallway so how about laying the sunroom floor with a herringbone pattern and using it on the bedroom feature wall (perhaps not the complete wall but partially) and perhaps somewhere on the stairs maybe in wall decoration or artwork.
I cannot believe that you just did a beautiful herringbone counter out of paint sticks! Genius! I love it!! Amazing!!
WHAT??? I'VE GOT TO WATCH THIS VIDEO
Um yeah pretty but way too much work for my taste.
I'll be interested to see how that polyurethane holds up to the water. We installed a wood countertop and used Waterlox on it. 7 years later, it's doing awesome. No watermarks or stains whatsoever. I love this countertop though. So very beautiful.
Lauren, Lauren, Lauren!!!! WOW! that counter top is FANTASTIC! You outdid yourself and it's so incredibly perfect with the old tile and old sink!!! Anyone can have a brand new kitchen done but this will be the most charming of them all! GREAT JOB!
Thanks so much!! your kind words are always a pleasure to read! Thanks for your support!
I agree it is a wonderful job! You are very talented.
Lauren I'm a college professor. Been at my current job 20 years. As a fellow educator I'm so excited by your channel and creativity. I adore you are your ideas!!
I had a terrible time with my bathtub when I moved into my 1930 home. There was an excessive amount of calcium build-up. I started with BKF soft scrub then the powder, White vinegar, baking soda, then I remembered a trick using Mt Dew. I let it soak for 20 minutes and I saw large clumps of calcium float up. I still had a ring where the soda couldn't reach, and no amount of scrubbing would take it off. I thought I would have to live with it until I discovered Zep Toilet Cleaner that has an acid base and clings to the surface. I was so impressed that I have become a ZEP full-time user.
Good to know! Recently I purchased a vintage 30's sink and it's hot that build up! Thank you!
My jaw is on the FLOOR! THESE are the kinds of renovations we need!!!! Supremely creative! I'm loving it and completely astounded.
You go girl!
After cleaning, the drain part of the sink looks almost rose gold/copper and I was wondering if it might look really cool to spray paint that metal edge banding to match before reinstalling it and possibly find or paint the faucet to match as well? Those colors seem like they’d really compliment the wood tone.
I just love the look of the herringbone tile! I wasn't sure how it would blend with the tile but it is beautiful! I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next!
Thanks so much! 😊
Very nice 👌
Lauren, You are the most amazing, talented, and creative young lady I have ever seen in my 78 years. I never miss a video. You did a fabulous job on the counter top. It is very interesting and eye catching. Your parents must be deeply proud of you.
When you introduced your idea for the countertop I thought "Oh no . . .this will take forever, I don't know if its gonna look good". But it turned out GREAT! you are so patient and hard working Girl
It is just stunning. Truly. I've never seen anyone do that and am in love with it. You really nailed it with this project idea. Leaving it a natural color has added warmth, texture, and a touch of modern to the vintage sink and tile. Wow!!! 💗💗💗
Just beautiful, Lauren! What a great job... Congratulations! 👏 Can't wait to see the finished look.
Thank you so much!!
you should stagger the top of the countertop area. It looks a bit off & all glued down the same length in 4's.... It would look way better with some shorter & some longer staggered pieces. THE CHEVRON idea is soooo cool though !!!!!
It’s beautiful. I would have taken the easy way and bought a ready made piece of butcher block. The sink looks great. It’s nice that you record this time of your life. It will be interesting to see in the future.
I love the herringbone. Well done. You're so patient, Lauren. The Air BnB is going to be fabulous!
Thank you! I sure hope so!!
This was such a great idea and it turned out looking amazing. I use these paint sticks often when I'm making dollhouse furniture and the one thing that helps me keep them all the right length size is by clamping a small piece of wood to the right side of the saw. This allows me to cut each piece the same size. I cut one butted up next to the clamped wood then each piece after the first piece goes butted up next to the same clamped wood making all the cuts will be exactly the same length. When my dad was alive he use to call this a stop block which ultimately makes all your cuts the same size in length. Just be sure you if you try this to cut slower to avoid the wood from kicking back or clamp a top wood guard on top of where the paint sticks slide over to the stop block wood.
The counter top looks great and it's good you managed to clean up the original sink as it keeps more of the overall vintage character of the kitchen.
I told you the screens on the surfprep were fantastic 👏. I also voted for wood counters! I love it! Great job Lauren 😁
You are amazing! It looks beautiful, but I can't get over your patience. Years ago I did my countertop and I wound up painting it and then splattering it with a lighter shade and then applied three coats of poly and called it a day. Yours is so much better, but I think I might have lost my mind with that detail. It is gorgeous though and I can't wait to see the finished product. I am so enjoying your videos. Please keep them coming! Take good care.
so glad you enjoyed it! patience is easier when you have the finished look on your mind! Thanks for watching!
The counter top look gorgeous and was definitely a time consuming job. I would've never thought of using paint sticks to create something this beautiful. I love the look. Great job, Lauren !! Thanks for another great video !!
Thank you ! Yes - time consuming but worth it!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher Id love to have seen the top counter pieces staggered in different sizes to be cohesive rather then 4' same length pieces. Otherwise chevron idea was so so cool.
LAUREN, THE COUNTER TOP IS BEAUTIFUL, YOU PUT A LOT OF HARD WORK INTO IT BUT IN TH END IT WAS SO WORTH IT...
thank you so much! (:
Excellent work
You have done the most difficult job which is the having the patience to achieve so much in very short time …the whole process is all about persistence well done 👌🏻 🌷
I love the budget friendly idea of using the paint sticks. The sink is so cool! I love how unique it is. Looking good! 👍🏻✌🏼
Love that the sinks drain matches the counter. Great Job! It's beautiful!
I love it! What a creative way to redo countertops!!! I cannot wait to see this completed! And that sink…….GASP
It’s a really good solution with the constraints you have. It adds a classic, stylish look without being heavy. The natural color keeps the kitchen feeling bright.
When you started with paint sticks I was skeptical about how they would fit together and seal. But your finished result is gorgeous! Looking forward to the next video!!!
🤩 You never cease to amaze me with the projects you take on, the counter looks really good!! Great job Lauren!!!!
OMG! What a labor of love! Days of work, but what a BEAUTIFUL job you did! Your renters had better love it! And Hooray--the faucet came off! And you did get the sink looking so nice! Can't wait to see it all done! I do agree to see about making the sink trim and the drain match. It would look so much nicer with your counter.
Lauren you certainly took on a huge task with all your measuring and cutting, shows what great patience and skills you have developed, I think it looks great and butcher block counter tops are very popular so I think it's an excellent idea to make the benches last longer with out replacing them :)
What a great choice. Tons of work! Love how excited you are about it. It looks FANTASTIC!
I love the countertop but I think it competes with the tile. The paint may tie it all together. I’ll wait and see. 😊
I agree! Too much *pattern.*
You rocked it off the charts! Look at all your creating - go woman GO❣️
I am so in love with this. You are a creative genius. You managed to come up with something incredibly gorgeous without breaking the budget. You are so willing to give things a shot and go with the flow is my number one takeaway. I would have needed a 3 page instruction pamphlet with photos!
You’re so talented. Just like everyone else, those countertops are beautiful and the work you put into them is amazing!
Looks nice, but I doubt it will last with only poly. You really need to put something like a marine grade epoxy resin in an area where guests will be using water. The fact that you put water-based poly on will complicate using the resin. You will need to do extra surface prep to be sure you will get good adhesion between the poly and the resin, otherwise the resin will chip off.
Thanks for the info! We'll see how it holds up !
In the bath room I would clean up the windows and frost them so that you still have all the natural lighting yet privacy at the same time while saving money
It’s amazing to see such a beautiful countertop made from paint sticks and I love the look of it against the ceramic tile wall! I also have so much respect for your ingenuity and perseverance in creating it! I would love to see the whole finished project.
If you are a renter and want to do this first put down a layer of white or sand brown contact paper and glue the wood on top of that then you can peel it up when you move out.
Outstanding Job Lauren!! Absolutely beautiful work! You have out done yourself YET AGAIN!!! I love this look you got going! Super cool to see this done in this way!! Great idea!! This is going to be such a cute kitchen!! Keep up the amazing work!!
That herringbone is gorgeous! I love it! I am amazed at how well it turned out. I wouldn’t have a wood countertop in a regularly used heavy-duty kitchen but for an Airbnb, it is perfect and stylish. Judy love it!
Love the countertop. I use oversized heavy duty silicone placemats (Amazon) to protect my counters when I cook, then roll them up and put them away after I clean up. Love them, resists stains and can place hot things with no damage! Best wishes! 🌹❤️
This has been a fascinating process to watch. Love it.
Thanks so much!
I loved this project! You are such a hard worker!! I can’t wait to see it finished!
thanks! i appreciate your kind words! Thanks for watching!
That sink is everything, love the way the top came out.
This looks so nice. I love watching you make older things look good. I have always loved antiques.
I love it. you did a wonderful job Lauren. Turned out gorgeous. Thank you for sharing this ❤
What a cool idea using those paint stick countertops!!and I do really like the black splash-I’ve been watching your channel since before you bought this house-huge undertaking but your both doing a great job,so excited to watch the process
You have so much creativity, but girl you work so hard.
It looks nice! I like the warmth of the wood next to to the vintage tiles. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished kitchen. Go girl!
I had a porcelain sink like that. I used part Clorox and Dawn and filled it up let it soak overnight and then used a scrubber to clean the rest. it came so white beautiful.
Ahh great idea! Thanks for watching!
I couldn't get my sink clean just scrubbing it with bleach. but when I put bleach in the sink with water to mop my floor I was shocked and relieved that it was all clean when I drained the sink!!😅
Same with our old sink. Mom would leave the water in and looked like new after.
Looks amazing but I’m a little concerned about the durability😉
we shall see! thanks for watching!
It turned out beautifully. Inspiring to other DIY'ers.
All I have to say is GENIUS!!! OMG, this turned out amazing! Love it so much and I can't for the finished kitchen reveal.
What a unique idea. I love it! You have the patience of a Saint to do all that. Great job! It's going to be an incredible Air BnB
Thanks a bunch!
😬 How long do you both plan to have the counter top? I couldn't imagine using a water based protectant next to a sink and expecting it to be fine after a few uses.
I ❤❤❤❤❤ it. The herringbone looks great. I love that you kept the original sink. They don’t make them like that.
Wow, what a labor of love. You did an amazing job with the cuts and the layout Lauren. I love the herringbone pattern. Great job using the sawdust for your filler. One thing I would do as a last counter addition would be to add a couple wooden hotplates for your guests to place hot pans on, so as to avoid wood burns on the new countertop.🌷🌷
Paint backsplash all white, it would update the kitchen.
Agreed
No it is great .
ohh I love the backsplash as it is! It's actually the inspiration for the whole area!
I was thinking the same thing!
I would leave the tile.
I literally loved this idea!!! I’ve been searching butcher block countertops for my townhouse without ripping it all out! It was built 1972 so it would be a bit much. But this solved everything! My kitchen floor I did the peel and stick marble in herringbone pattern so when I seen the first pack of sticks I’m like I’m all in! Thank you so much for all your content. I love your channel! ❤
Lauren that is the most beautiful counter I’ve ever seen. You are such an amazing crafts person. You should be so proud of yourself.😁
WOW...what an idea. It's beautiful
I've been sitting through this debating if you're Braveheart brave or just completely nuts. I absolutely loved the idea of this. It's unique, creative, beautiful and extremely budget friendly, so this project is another one of your winners in my opinion. What kept me on the edge of my seat was your nonchalant attitude of "I've never done this or used that, but I've seen others do this so I thought I'd try it". Oh my gosh! After all of that tedious work of cutting all of those pieces and gluing them one by one onto the counter I would have froze in fear of trying anything new! I'd have been afraid of screwing it all up while cutting off the excess or not using a durable enough sealant or ruining the whole thing 100 different ways and then what? I have no doubt that I'd have worked myself into a fetal position on the floor in a panic attack! So, I just want to thank you for both your bravery and nuttiness so I can learn what works or doesn't without having to guess and drive myself crazy (it'd be a short drive) stressing over it. I'll have to look and see how well it's holding up over time now! I think I could maybe have the patience to do this on a bathroom counter, maybe.
I was get soooo sad when the videos end ! I’m sooo excited for you !! It looked amazing ! One thing I have learned is DIY’s are never easy haha they may look easy but nope haha
I think you did amazing can’t wait to see another update ! Also yay you got the faucet off !! Challenge accepted and conquered 💪🏼😎
I love it!!! Can’t wait to see it all completed!!
It’s gorgeous. What an awesome, unique, economical solution.
Just finished watching this….looks great! Love the fact you’re preserving that beautiful sink!
I'm so glad you kept that vintage sink!! Counter looks beautiful
This is AMAZING!!!! I can not wait to see the finished area! You know that point in a project that you take a step back and everything just ties together!!!! You ROCK!!!!! lots of love!!!!
I am so impressed with the design, the execution and the final result. But mostly with your determination to try to new things and not be afraid to take chances. As you learn, so do we and you are an excellent teacher. I am truly in awe of your final product!
I’m AMAZED!!! I would try this in a heartbeat! What a genius idea!
The counters are STUNNING!!!!!! ❤ Bar Keepers Friend is amazing!!! I've been using it for over 30 yrs.
Wow! It is sooo so gorgeous!!! You are so patient!
What a neat idea for a countertop. Your hardwork has paid off. It looks awesome. I can't wait to see it all put back together with the painted cabinets.
It looks so nice! I can’t wait to see the finished product!
Just beautiful, Lauren! Very clever!
OMG,the countertop looks fantastic! Good for you, for trying something new, and it looks great! First-time seeing a wooden countertop! Well done, Lauren!!
