  • Let's have a look at a number of units and buildings in the StarCraft Battle.net Beta (version 12.47.97)! Dated 4 months before the retail release, it contains unused and unfinished units that you wouldn't normally see if you were just testing the multiplayer!
Although the campaign was not included with the Battle.net Beta, the unfinished state of campaign-specific units proves that the campaign was still work in progress 4 months before release. In addition to this, a number of unused Independent units that would only have placeholder graphics in retail StarCraft have their intended sprites in this Beta!
    Extra notes:
    - I placed the nuke out of curiosity, it is used and functional.
    - Video pacing might be a bit fast for subtitles, I apologize for that.
    - It is possible some of these units might remain in retail (Non-Broodwar) StarCraft, I do not have a copy of that at hand to cross-check
    - Used PVPGN v1.8 to emulate Battle.net. For an unknown reason there is an input delay. The Beta does not seem to work with new versions of PVPGN.
    - A number of units I tested crash the game on map load or on unit selection so I excluded those.
Shout-outs to rpgkdh for writing a lot of info about the Battle.net Beta: m.cafe.daum.ne... (in Korean)
Info about playing the Beta with avantageous.com...
Modified map used for this video: drive.google.c... (please excuse the size of the scm, that comes from the MPQ editor i used not properly clearing the MPQ when I replace the scenario.chk)
Script I created to modify the scm, because they cannot be edited by regular staredit/scmdraft: gist.github.co...
Check out this video by Bits und Bolts for a more gameplay-focused view of the Battle.net Beta: • StarCraft Beta (1997):... (Fun fact: I was in the middle of investigating the Beta when that video was released, such a coincidence!)

Wow this is amazing! I was desperately trying to get this to work.
The Warcraft 3 beta is much easier to run due to the crack.
Nice to see how different stuff was back then!
I have made a TCRF article on the beta and this video will help a lot.
The Cantina also had a functional sprite.

Thanks! I recently noticed I appear to have a Brood War beta in the depths of my old folders too so I might check that one out in the future, don't think there are many videos about it.

Well the Raider function as the Valkyrie in Broodwar, I hope if Blizzard make a Broodwar extension expansion or patch then maybe they should add the Gunship 😁.

Greetings, your Starcraft videos are great - One thing I've been wondering is what all the maps were that were available in the beta, and I've been trying to find and play and those that are missing. I know Orbital Solar Relay, Alpha Draconis, and Tarsonis Orbital are among the beta maps, but I've been wanting to find the names of the remaining ones, and to see whether any of them made it into v1.0 of the game and beyond.
I know that beta maps aren't compatible with the v1.0 of StarEdit, but from what I see in the description you seem to have devised a way to get these maps to work in the modern .scm system. Is there any way I can have them?
One last question: Do you happen to have any of the beta patches made in that span of time between the beta CD launch and the v1.00 of the game? Did they add any new maps or game modes along the way?

The other three maps that came with the SC Beta CD are Ruins of the Ancients, Ashworld of Char and Mar Sara Wastelands.
I have only figured out a way to make direct edits to the map data with a script, don't have a way to get the maps working in a recent version of the editor yet. I might look into e.g. transferring the terrain data into a modern scm so that it loads in an editor sometime.
I sadly do not have any beta patches so I don't know if they ever added new maps/game modes. Would be interesting to have those, I'm very curious about some of the abilities that have gone unimplemented in the beta version that's available to us.

@@DebugYoshi Hey, yesterday, I posted a 2nd comment, but I accidently posted a link on it(when I mentioned "battlenet") and I think UA-cam managed to automatically flag it. I just wanna ask did you manage to recieve it or see it?

@@SEGAClownboss I did not receive a 2nd comment from you before this one.
On the topic of beta maps in modern starcraft, I spent yesterday and today working on a converter and managed to get the terrain, units and doodads loaded into ScmDraft 2 (need to use ScmDraft, StarEdit crashes on the map). It's not a perfect port because I skipped e.g. the text but hope it's still useful. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SnxtpYkDQSTYWcIkVXrZ1NjMqXDyE5nS?usp=sharing

@@DebugYoshi This is brilliant! I am in your debt. I've been looking to get the two missing maps for so many months. It's slightly a bummer they aren't compatible with StarEdit and that they lack other small things like descriptions, but I've decided I'm going to do something about it: I am going to recreate these maps in StarEdit, in pixel-perfect scale. If I finish this, I will be sure to inform you, and I am going to share these maps publically.
To be able to do this, I just need to ask if I can have the full descriptions, or "flavour text", for both Ashworld of Char and Mar Sara Wastelands, in the exact wording, including line breaks and the number of players.
And also trying these maps out I was really surprised to see the immeasurably huge mineral and gas quantities in every cluster! Every mineral cluster has 56,320. It's impossible to run out, and kinda makes going for expansion bases kinda moot. I wonder if it's a bug. When you play the beta, I wanna ask, were these quantities always this large, or were they something we've grown more accustomed to, like 1500 minerals and 5000 gas per cluster/geyser?
When it comes to the missing comment, yeah, I guess UA-cam deleted it just because I left an external link there. But basically I was giving my thanks in that comment, and I was also sharing some things I know about the beta patches and the fan community back then, since I love scouring through internet archives and reading blog and forum posts from January 1998. It's endlessly fascinating. There are many interesting things you can hear about the beta patches, but also so many missing gaps. What I do find I try to write down. Here's in brief all the stuff I mentioned in the deleted post:
-There were 7 beta patches total
-Beta patch 3 is the earliest I can find an email/changelog for
-Beta patch 4 mentions things such as Goliaths being nerfed and Archons losing their Mind Control ability, among lots of other things. The ladder style system is introduced and 5-8 player matches are purportedly playable.
-By beta patch 5, game modes such as Melee, FFA, CTF, Greed, Slaughter, Sudden Death, and team games options should all be present.
-Beta patch 6 was the one that introduced the first public-use StarEdit. Fans immediately went to make many maps and play them through Battle-net. There was a general tendency that a lot of fans recreated maps from Warcraft 2 or from other RTS games. For example "Plains of Snow 98" and "Bridge to Bridge Combat" were both fan-made conversions from Warcraft 2 to Starcraft, and they were made during the beta. Ladder maps were also being discussed in forum posts, and it seems the only three available ones were "Discovery", "Lost Temple", and "Dire Straights". I don't know when these maps date, so it could be patch 6 at the latest, or patch 4 at the earliest. Blizzard also announce that the maps made during the beta will not be compatible with v1.00 of Starcraft, but that they will work to convert all the existing beta maps. I wonder if this included some fan-made maps as well. Maps such as "The Hunters", "Hidden Shrine", and a conversion map called "Floating City", were already created by this point as well and were popular and much-discussed.
-Beta patch 7 was relatively uneventful, and v1.00 came after.
Every beta patch seems to have the same naming convention. Patch 4 was called "betapatch4.exe" for example. I don't know whether these patches and what they contained have been truly lost to time, but I'm interested in what they held, and I'm interested in how the players reacted to their changes.

@@SEGAClownboss the amount of minerals/gas is a mistake, I think minerals are supposed to be 1500 and gas 5000. The old scm format did not have explicit resource amounts so I did something wrong in the conversion.
Mar Sara and Ashworld are both simply "Destroy all enemy buildings." with Up to 4 Players.
Thanks for the info about the patches! Wonder if Goliaths being nerfed refers to them having been able to fire on the move (I think tanks also fired on the move? Need to check again). And interesting that Archons lost Mindcontrol, that would mean they implemented that sometime between base SC Beta and that patch (because in the unpatched version it is unimplemented). Wonder what happened to the Ultralisk ability Roar and Arbiter ability Essence Flare (both unimplemented in the unpatched SC Beta)

Hey! I don't know if you're seeing this, but I have something to report about the mkdd patcher 1.1.2! This version has a very odd audio bug and I couldn't find out why. I tried using 1.0 and the audio bug wasn't there. I just wanted to let you know, I don't know if you're already working on it but again, just wanted to let you know.

If you don't mind, please report the issue with the necessary steps and which files you used to produce the bug on the patcher's issue page github.com/RenolY2/mkdd-track-patcher/issues
the comment section of this video is not a good place to discuss the issue
