As a Supreme Commander fan as well. Terratron "reveal" got me so excited. I always wanted a big mecha for Terran. I had to settle with odin version of Thor, but we had to live with special edition wing thor lol.
He's in the editor though. And although it sadly was never made into an actual unit, one guy actually posted a graphical mockup of one with Protoss buildings instead labeled Protossimus Prime.😆
The veterancy mechanic should've been for all three factions. Would've made the game more interesting. And it's sad that the Thor isn't like it was in Alpha. A big mech that could've made into something akin to what the Mothership is.
i mean C&C had been doing it since RA2 which dustin browder also was lead design in that game as he was in both wings of liberty and heart of the swarm, and most C&C games using that mechanic was relatively balenced with it in it, generals and C&C 3 being prime examples

It's interesting to learn about how campaign deco buildings and such were at some point a concept for multiplayer. I loved the variety in WoL mission design and graphics. Now stuff like "why is there a flying unit called Scourge in the protoss minicampaign, that only appears once, and can't even attack" make sense. Or the larva-like zerg in the lava commando mission at the end.
So a lot of terran stuff was removed because it wasn't "interesting" or was "boring" yet that pretty much explains most of zerg now. SC1 zerg was so much more interesting than SC2.
i wish more of these scrapped ideas would have at least made it into the campaign. the campaign itself also changed a lot and removed or drastically changed a lot of cool ideas, like instead of being awarded specific units after each mission you choose to unlock each one individually in the same way you buy the different upgrades for the units in the current WOL campaign.
One of the reasons they automatically give you the units is to make sure you have the right tools to complete each mission. When placing a planet on the progression tree they know which units you'll have at that point and they can balance them accordingly. Without that they would have to account for too many variables and the design would suffer from it.
@@Anomen77 i definitely dont agree for one particular reason: most maps *definitely* dont even have any particular requirements to complete and most units each mission gives you pretty much never gets used again except on that one particular mission lol. biggest offenders of that are Firebats, Hellions, Thors, Reapers, Vikings, Battlecruisers, Vultures, Diamondbacks... I'll play SC1 when I want the old design and gameplay.
You can still see Thor's "Odin" model tested on the 4th Battle Report shown by blizzard. I could possibly tell why they replaced him by a smaller model.
Once they made the smaller model for the Thor they probably didn't want to scrap the old one, so they slapped it into the campaign and created one if the coolest scort missions in RTS.
im late here but i do would like to know what happened to all of these old models and cut units, i mean they are removed entirely from the game right? There is still some leftover units from the alpha like the BC with plasma weaponry but there is something wrong with the plasma weaponries textures. They made the map editor and support for custom modes, why the heck then remove all of these goodies from the game entirely? Maybe they didnt want to have another version of sc2 closer to the alpha in the custom section out of their control? Its so sad, we could still play with these units one way or another but now everything would have to be recreated. An arcade sc2 would be the best thing ever, maybe not for comp players but im not one of those, i love direct strike and it would be the perfect place for all of this the photon cannons, their projectiles and protoss artstyle in general was so much better cause it was closer to the original, i really loved how protoss looked in alpha. Why they reworked protoss design so heavily is another big question i have, i know all races got a visual touchup but its the most noticeable with protoss, they look so chunky, generic and just plainly bad in my opinion now. The Golden Age skin made it ALOT better though

This kind of thing is actually way more exciting than what we ended up getting imo. I remember seeing the mothership's "Planet Cracker" beam. Thought it was the coolest thing ever. And honestly, it would be perfectly balanced in today's SC2, underpowered even - and they wouldn't have to remove anything for it to exist. Nukes are already a niche strategy that usually don't work out at high levels - the Planet Cracker is just a nuke with a much higher tech requirement on a unit that can't cloak. The mothership always felt like it was missing the "ultimate protoss vessel" vibe since they torched vortex. And adding the PC would totally be a step in that direction.
it would be pretty effective at destroying buildings, probably more-so than a nuke, while not costing any supply like a nuke does, and the Mothership could still attack and move while doing the Planet Cracker. so, there are a lot of key differences between it and nukes.
@@Templarfreak Right, the version I remember had it moving *very* slowly if it all, and only after the initial charge. But of course - the PC does still cost supply equal to the MS. Not to mention a lot of energy I'd imagine. Definitely an ability I could see being used nichely but well in the lategame.
@@dissolution9843 the mothership itself costs supply yes, but using the planet cracker does not. it's not the same. a ghost costs separate supply *ontop* of the nuke. the nuke also costs minerals and gas which the planet cracker does not. as far as i can tell, in the original trailer using the planet cracker doesnt affect the mothership's speed at all, the mothership was (and still kind of is) just really slow in general. im not saying it'd be supremely overpowered or anything, though, like you were kind of suggesting in the OP it's a pretty easily avoidable thing much like a nuke, so it would rarely get a lot of actual damage done much the same as a nuke. i just thought i'd mention all of this is all lol
