Jen, You have the Best group of people following you! I made a comment about recently losing my son and makeup bringing me a bit of joy in the sadness. So many took time to comment or like and it just touched me so deeply. Thank you for your support and kindness each and every one of you. I love this community , God Bless you all. Lynne
Lynn, My heart truly goes out to you. I do still have my adult son, but I have close to losing him many times. It is a terrible fear, vand the anxiety can be overtaking. I have a number of very close friends who have lost children. Even though I sat with them & did everything possible, I did not experience the death of my child. I did not walk in their shoes. I can not imagine your suffering. I want you to know that I care and that I will be in prayer for you. ✝️
@@beverlynelson599 thank you for your kind words Beverly, I certainly appreciate the prayers. We are coming up on the first anniversary of his passing in a couple weeks. This first year was very hard and I’m not sure it gets better but I know he is with the Lord and is happy and so I am happy for him altho I miss him terribly.
I lost my youngest son last year. He just had his first heavenly birthday. He always complimented me on my makeup and hair so for me, getting up even on sad days and putting my makeup on makes me feel so much better.. even if I’m going to be home all day.
Me, too. I’m 60, and only really got into makeup during 2020, when I was not working and had lots of time, and discovered UA-cam, where I learned a lot about how to choose and apply makeup. But I live in Florida - a lot of the native born Floridians just aren’t into makeup, and the transplant retirees are just done with it. I don’t care - I’m not the only one where I work who wears makeup, but the only other woman who does is 2nd generation Cuban.
I don't wear makeup everyday but I definitely do if I'm leaving the house. I am home most of the time in comfy lounge wear & no makeup, when I leave the house I want to be dressed & have on makeup. I don't care that everyone else is bare faced & wearing bike shorts with tank tops & flipflops. Not my vibe. I want to wear the beautiful clothes & makeup I have invested $$$ on.
Yes me too, I don't wear foundation because I don't like to cover my freckles, but I bronze, blush, eyeshadow, mascara, and especially eyeshadow almost every day specifically when I go to work. No one else does much makeup at all where I work but I just like to do it because it's fun!
I am 72 And I still wear makeup but, I'm in a building with very, very senior people like late. 80s, so I think I'm the only one here that actually wears makeup. They don't even wear a lipstick. I will never give that it up I may now put on a full FACE of makeup like I used to but, I hit the highlights. Thank you, Jen for covering this topic.

I have a huge eyeshadow collection and as a way to encourage myself to use them all, take one palette out for the week and dabble with looks. Then rotate to another each week. It's my only artistic expression and love it!
I do something similar, except with a "what haven't I used in awhile" strategy, so a couple products are out on the counter for me to use that week. It might only get used once that week, so it's more products being used, just less often. I'm seasonal in the colors I like to use too, so now I feel like it's a big rush to focus on the summer colors before switching over to fall colors.
I love that idea. I've been doing that with my older palettes. My big regret is not using some of my eyeshadow palettes before they expired. I have a growing pile of make-up that has expired, that I can't even give away.
I really appreciate you addressing that sensation fo feeling that you're "overly made up compared to everyone else" around you. I absolutely love makeup, I love wearing makeup, I love experimenting with makeup, and I prefer the way I look in makeup... and all of the women I'm friends with just don't. They think I'm a bit crazy for "doing my face" before I leave the house and sometimes it makes me self-conscious, but at the same time I sometimes look at them and think, "Just a little lipstick, bronzer, etc. would make a world of difference". To each their own, I guess. (Oh... and I love glitter on my eyelids, because they're really hooded and adding that little bit of light makes my eyes pop.)
100% the same! I do fully done eyes and a natural face (altho I wear way more makeup than people think). I love that I can go to town on my deep set, hooded, shadowed eyes because just a little color peeks out. The only time I skip shimmer is when I need to do media, even tho I doubt it matters that much lol.
I’ve always been the girl that wears way more eyeshadow than my friends. I think it suits me tho so I don’t usually mind. At work sometimes I feel a bit self conscious tho, but I’ll get a lot of compliments so 🤷🏼♀️
same. You don't have to look "made up" when you're made up. That's the point. Same with looking put together. It can be accomplished in a comfortable & casual way. Leggings & oversized tees just doesn't scream put together imo.
I feel like the pendulum is swinging so hard away from that lockdown makeup buying surge and people are buying less and less. It's all about quality over quantity now, and even more than that it's about what works for you, not what egeryone is talking about. This video is such a good reminder of that!
@@scapwell inflation now is nothing compared to what it was in the 70s when I was a teenager first buying make up. Now I’m 61 and I buy a lot of elf products that are really good and cheap as heck! It feels good to have a lot of lower end options that are still decent.
I have on more to add - "Gift With Purchase". Ulta does a lot of "free gift with any $X purchase" and I am a sucker for those. I know that they most give sample sizes, which are hardly worth the value they ascribe to those gifts, but I still fall for them. In fairness though, I've discovered some of my favorite products across all categories from those gifts, and have also enjoyed the smaller sizes for when I've traveled. But.. I still spend too much just to get the free gift with purchase. It's a real problem.
This video makes so much sense. And I have become a much more “aware” consumer. I really really wanted the ND Golden palette. I love her formula, I LOVE the packaging of that palette, but I don’t wear gold eyeshadows. All of my palettes that have a gold color are completely untouched. I would like to think I will wear gold, but in all reality, I will not likely use them. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Great video!
The one that really hit me was the backups! I just recently started to realize just what you said: by the time I would be ready to use it, there’s a real possibility that a better product has come out.
I regret getting swept up into shopping sales and hunting for products the last several years. Now my focus is using my collection of pretty makeup and exploring what I actually like. It takes a lot longer to use up products, and I’ve realized I don’t need to buy, buy, buy like I’m a Beauty UA-camr because I’m not! Great video Jen! 🩷
I lost my mom this year. I've always loved makeup, but I think I really fell into buying products to help make me feel better. I realized what I was doing, and I've really realized what colors/tones look best on me. I overhauled my collection to my taste now. I'm a sahm to a 2yr old and 4yr old. Before they wake up, I love sitting at my vanity and put my makeup on. I live in middle of nowhere Minnesota. I feel like I'm overly done up a lot... but as a part of my therapy, putting on makeup really does help me feel better about myself. Also, a ton of foundations or base products lean yellow on me (cool, pink undertone). A lavender powder has helped cut the yellow (if you don't want to mix a blue color corrector or if you don't have time but love the formula/finish, etc). Love your videos, Jen! ❤Klarissa
I had a devastating loss of my father. We were in a bad spot and said things, he died a week later. That was 2020. I am a teacher so 2021 online crap stressed me out. We lost my Amazing father in law that year. The past years after that have pushed me into horrible depths. All I could do is watch makeup tutorials. Fast forward to today, where I am not working and drowning in makeup I don’t need..
Agree with you on the “dupes”. Just because something is the same color doesn’t mean it’s a dupe. Texture & quality is really important. Thx for mentioning this!
The abuse and total misuse of the word. “dupe” is hugely annoying. It’s gotten to the point where colored water is described as a “dupe” of a real cleanser, or a tube of red wax is a “dupe” for high-quality lipstick.🙄🤦♀️😡
That LA Girl blue foundation mixer has saved me a ton of money correcting foundations that are too yellow. I highly recommend people getting one suited for your skin tone to correct wrong shades. It’s saved me hundreds all for what? $6?
Another thing that helps is a lavender powder. I'm fair to light with cool, pink undertones (like Jen). So many foundations lean yellow.... so lavender helps neutralize the yellow.
This video is so timely! I truly was just in the midst of a declutter of my blushes and eyeshadows when this popped up. I got rid of sooo many items -- some that I truly love -- because they are "fantasy self" buys. Colorful eyeshadows, shadows with glitter, things I bought because they were new, things I just don't wear. I will pass many of them along to friends who will enjoy them. Sometimes when I am decluttering and feel regret about the money I have spent, I remind myself that the money is gone, and keeping things in my collection unworn does not change that. Makeup is my hobby and creative outlet...but I only have one face! I always appreciate your realistic perspective on these questions!
Hopefully you donated or passed along rather than into the trash and into landfill! Makeup contains heavy metals and compounds that leak into the ground into our soil therefore our food and into our water!!!
I’ve been decluttering my makeup recently too, and I got really honest with myself and said “what do you actually really love, and what are you just holding onto because you feel guilty about spending money on it?” I keep repeating that mantra that the money is already spent. I’m very frugal, so I tend to get really annoyed with myself when I realize I wasted my money. 😅 But after playing around with a lot of makeup, the upside is that now I do feel confident about my preferences and I’ve been way more discerning with my more recent purchases. No need to waste any more money, because now I know what I like! 😂
For colors I never wear (like bright greens, blues, reds, etc.) and pressed glitters that always seem to get put into palettes, I have crumbled the pigments and added them to clear nail polish bottles. Just shake really well and go! It's worked so well for using up eyeshadows and I never have to buy new nail polish (other than cheap clear polish).
Fantastic video so me at age 60 I am finally starting to just use what works for me (only watch you and a few other u tubers) you are one of my Favorites I have wasted so much money chasing the next big thing … Love all your videos Jen
My biggest regrets usually are buying X when I really wanted Y but the store was out of Y when I looked, and I wanted to buy SOMETHING, as a treat for myself. Ugh, so stupid! Another one is giving brand A another chance when I already know that their products have never, ever worked for me and never will.
I loved this video, Jen. I used to buy eyeshadow palettes galore because I was so inspired by UA-camrs’ amazing eye looks. I would get the palettes home and realise that I still have very small eyelid space (like that would magically have changed overnight lol!), and I could never duplicate their looks. I now just enjoy seeing swatches and eye looks but using just one basic palette on me.
Great video concept! Colour drops in blue and yellow have saved many of my foundations - as a light olive skin tone, it is very rare to find foundations that match.
I’m very fair with a very cool undertone and muted/desaturated, so I use blue or lavender drops to help. I’ve only ever found 2 shade matches I didn’t have to do that with. And I look much better in muted shades and cool toned shades, so I always try to be on the lookout for those and even when the product photos look like they’ll fit that, I wait to see real swatches or try it myself to find out since so often they don’t end up being that!
Same light/medium olive skintone. I only found one foundation that matched me perfectly, YSL LE Teint foundation which sadly they discontinued last year, I only have one bottle left and their other foundations don’t come in the color that matched perfectly.😢
@@BlingyBea The struggle is real. I have bought so many foundations that were supposed to be a match for me, but they were always too yellow or way too pink. Heather Austin has said she keeps a "green" for some of her foundations that don't quite match her skin tone, but I've not heard of using blue or yellow.
@@valerieP1968 I have the blue and I put it foundation that is a bit dark and it neutralizes it where I can wear it. I have the yellow but don’t use it, it makes light foundation a tad darker, more yellow tone to me. I think the green would make it more olive tone, I don’t have that one.
I've started buying foundation in the lightest shade as long as it's not yellow. I then add bronzing drops to get the intensity I need. No more orange or yellow foundations. I'm fair cool toned light olive. The only foundations that have ever matched me are Clarins 2.5 and mac face and body N1, which I th,ink is now discontinued.
I am happy to hear I was not the only one who could not make the L’Oréal serum foundation work. In addition to the color being off, it wore terribly on me then made me look dry.
Thank you for making me appreciate working in an artsy environment! Three of the four women wear makeup & all have distinctive styles & all of us lean into color, shine, etc, but in different ways. Sometimes I forget that most professional settings aren’t so lackadaisical!
I try not to fall for the hype anymore when new products come out especially when the product is something I don't often use. A good example is liquid blush, I've got some but prefer powder ❤
I will probably never buy liquid blush. As a mature woman, I have grown to really like Jones Road Beauty Miracle Balm as it has skin care qualities along with subtle color on my dry skin. I do use powder blush sometimes.
I put waterproof mascara over regular mascara as a second coat and it seals everything in reasonable well like if my eyes watered a bit I’d be fine. It’s easier to remove too because the regular mascara under it buffers and so it’s not totally stuck on your lashes.
I do this, too! I use a regular mascara first that separates and defines my lashes. Then I use a waterproof mascara that volumises and lengthens, and it seals it all in. My lashes are long, and I have very oily skin, so I have to powder my undereyes *and* my browbone (my lashes can brush the skin on my browbones area). But with the powdering and the waterproof mascara as the top layer, I rarely get any kind of smudging. Bonus: my mascara holds up no matter the weather I'm out in!
That's was so good! So much truth, thank you! This takes me back to when I started watching beauty youtubers years ago. I was so excited to watch the reviews on products to try to figure out what would work for me and help me save money by not making spending mistakes. At that time I never realized how easily influenced I could be. I thought if someone I trusted said something was good then I would agree with them no doubt. It took time and trial and error to learn what my own preferences are and what works for me in my lifestyle. I realize now that making mistakes is part of that journey. I just hope not to make these mistakes again and to learn from them instead
When all of my makeup went up in smoke, I over bought because I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted and needed. It wouldn’t be so bad if I knew people that I could give the makeup to when I got something that didn’t work for me but I knew would work for someone. One practice I adopted long ago is sticking with what I know works until it doesn’t anymore or is discontinued. It’s fun (or annoying) to find a replacement, but it can be an opportunity to explore the available options if you are so inclined, have the resources, and it’s important to you. Also, if you don’t use or need a type of product very often, why have multiple choices? A drawer full of blush is pretty but completely impractical if you rarely wear blush.
This is so relatable!! This past year I’ve gotten a lot more conscious of what I’m buying and why I’m buying it regarding makeup. For example I’ve come to learn I’m always gonna be a matte or natural finish girl, the dewy stuff is just not for me no matter how much it’s trending. And with backups I totally get what you’re saying. I only get backups on powder, mascara, and eyeliner that I know for certain I’m going to use up.
I love subscription boxes. I like having new items every month for such a low price. I appreciate that you can now customize your Ipsy box to your particular colors and preferences. Also, I have 8 nieces in their teens and twenties and every Christmas I make up personalized make up and skin care bags out of all the products that I don’t use. It’s become such a tradition that they all look forward to it. They’re all different skin colors and have different styles so it works out great.
Great ideal! I don’t have any and a few times I have taken a bag of things to work for my friend and she keeps what she wants and gives to her friends. I always think what a waste of money, but I still buy. I have cut back alot but it’s a process.😊
Jen, at 72 years young I plead guilty of several of these offenses🤪🤪 I can’t tell you how many times I have tried a type of lipstick, blush, powder, etc and been dissatisfied….only to realize I had been down that same road (different brand) a few times before. I do think we need to know what really works for and enhances us. Makeup is still so much fun to try, but I too now often decide that something very similar is already in my stash and not to fall for a review, packaging, hype, etc. Thanks for all you do for this community, but mostly for your kind way and honesty.🥰💄
If you use an oil cleanser to remove your makeup, waterproof mascara isn’t hard to remove- maybe an extra 5 seconds of massaging the oil into the lashes. I’ve permanently switched to waterproof mascara because in the summer there’s no regular formula I’ve found that doesn’t smudge on the sunscreen plus sweat mess 3-4 hours into the day. Plus I can go swimming in it! I use the Clinique waterproof mascara if anyone wants a recommendation.
You know…. You just became my favorite person on here…. I spend WAAAAY too much money, for exactly all these reasons. And no, I cannot afford it. 🤣. I honestly needed this past-due slap in the face. NOT your intention I am aware, but I am taking this video as a much needed wake up call my friend! I absolutely LOVE you Jen!
❤❤❤ I agree with you, there is too many products launch some are just not for me, whether it be makeup, skincare. I miss the days when youtube was just about doing makeup and not about purchasing a lot of things that we don't use.
Great video, Jen! 😇👍💕 I can totally relate to your comment about being aware of wearing more makeup than most women in general (especially those my age) in any given setting, as I live in a small town as well, & I DEFINITELY fit that description. I pretty much always wear a full face, often including iridescent highlighter & 3 or more colors of eyeshadow with sparkly duo-chromes on my lids, whether it’s going to Walmart or to church on Sunday! ✨🤩✨But what’s interesting is that I will frequently get compliments on my makeup from both random strangers as well as people I know, & I noticed I don’t get weird looks so much these days, as I think most people are used to seeing me with the whole nine yards & they kinda’ expect it. A friend at church told me once that she could never get away with wearing colorful or sparkly makeup, but that mine always looked fabulous & I pull it off brilliantly because it fits my artistic & confident personality. I had never really considered that aspect, as I said she could certainly wear colorful makeup as much as the next person if she so desired, but she explained that by her having a more reserved personality, it would make her feel uncomfortable. I guess mindset really can play more of a role in our relationship with makeup & the choices we make regarding what we purchase/wear. 🤔💭 (But I do love wearing some neutrals too, so don’t worry!) 😉 I’m bad about purchasing backups & then I forget that I have them, & then purchase even more (especially when it comes to favorite foundation products online that often go out of stock in my shade), so I’ll end-up with tons of excess that take forever to use. Nothing like having memory like a sieve! 😂🤣😁
Thank you so much for this video. I love de-influencing makeup. I have a HUGE makeup collection and have recently been purging everything that doesn’t work for me or I just don’t reach for. I’ve wasted sooo much money on stuff that’s not used. My daughter took some of it, but a lot ended up in the trash and it’s sad how much I’ve wasted. I’ve realized that I have a VERY warm olive skin tone, and even though cool tones are very trendy, popular and beautiful, they just don’t work for me. So I can no longer buy a cool toned palette no matter what. All cool tones look grey on me and do not look like the pan at all. I’ve learned!! I’m done buying eyeshadow palettes and blushes except in my personal very specific shades now! I’m learning about color analysis and my “personal palette” of favorite shades that actually look good on me is very small, but I’m excited about how much money I’m going to save, and I know that I will always look good from now on. 😊
I have a PS to my long post below, I forgot the main message. Jen your points in this video really hit home and gave me ideas and guidelines to overcome my addiction. Thanks so much. I appreciate you so much and will still be watching regularly. You offer so much more than other influencers. Bless you. ❤
I love all your content you put out honestly never stop being honest and genuine, it’s really refreshing to hear your make up opinions❤❤❤. Also ps I love the top it’s really pretty and reminds me of something similar mum used to wear!❤❤❤
I bought a brush style hair smoother during the Amazon Days sale. The very next day after the sale was over, it was even cheaper than when I bought it the day before, during the sale. Amazon’s prices do fluctuate depending on popularity and availability, but the very next day cheaper, when not on sale??!!!! $10…not a lot, but I wasn’t happy. You’re right sales can be deceiving or not pay off in the long run.
Thank you for saying the quiet part out loud. I am so guilty of buying things that don't fit my lifestyle and trying colors that don't look good thinking I will get a different result. I am now making an effort to buy with intention and I am saving money, stream lining my routine, and feeling more confident. I appreciate you reminding me I am not alone.
I’m a new subscriber. You popped into my YT feed & I’ve been binge watching your videos for a week or two. I simply love your honest reviews. I have fair skin just like you so this subject really spoke to me. I was wondering what are your favourite brushes?
This is a great video, with many good points! I feel you on the whole buying things you don't like 😂 I have the exact same thing with matte liquid lipsticks! I've decided to just not buy certain makeup items at all. Examples of this are liquid and powder blush, since I only enjoy applying a cream blush with fingers nowadays and foundation products without added SPF, because I always want that extra little sun protection, even in winter.
Jen, this is why I watch your channel! I absolutely love your honesty. I do the exact same things as you! I love that you truly care about your audience, and you’re not just trying to sell products! Thank you for keeping it real!!!😊
Thanks for this video! I have so much makeup that I got out of curiosity and recommendations from youtubers. Now I'm taking that step back and using what I have :)
This video resonates so much for me! I already came to some of the conclusions myself - but not before I have a stuffed makeup bag with way more than I actually use !
Last year I fell into the Taylor Swift red lipstick hype and bought a TON of reds - hoping and praying they would make me look EXACTLY like her! (Ummmm, Nancy, you're a BLAC, - now 60 - year old - OVER WEIGHT woman - what in God's NAME makes you think you're REMOTELY CLOSE to looking like Taylor Swift??!!) But, you couldn't tell me NOTHIN'! I was DETERMINED! But FINALLY reason (and also becoming unemployed - which I still am!) - got the better of me and I STOPPED! Needless to say, I have a SLEW of red lipsticks now! Thankfully, red lips DO look flattering on me, so I'm not SO disappointed but when am I gonna realize - GIRL, YOU'RE NOT EVEN THAT AGE ANYMORE!!??!! LOL!!
For me, I find that cool based fuchsia leaning blue purple toned blushes are some of the only ones that will appear to be a true, cool pink on my very cool toned, fair skin tone. I can relate to buying so called cool toned pink blushes and lipsticks that look very peach! It’s really interesting how one person can think something is cool toned but on me, it’s straight up orange! The NYX Butter Blush in My Butta Half and RMS Beauty blush in Bermuda Rose look very bright in the pan but they blend out so beautifully and give that cool toned tone pop! I love these two! I have a few other cool toned more neutral blushes, but those tend to lean towards mauve, instead of that pure, bright pink that we all crave sometimes! Blush is a lot more complicated than I imagined- but I finally think I have found cool toned options for a neutral look, a bright pop of pure color or a natural look. In each category I have at least a few! Loving the blush life lately!
Watching this video hit me with so many layers of guilt, lol. My obsession is eyeshadow. I feel the need to buy every new palette that comes out, even though I don't actually wear it. Most of the time, by the time I've finished my base makeup (which I really enjoy doing), I don't have the time or energy to deal with eyeshadow. Plus, I feel like eyeshadow makes me look too done up. I can rock a bold red lip or bright blush, but the second I add eyeshadow, it just feels like too much. I love opening the palettes and looking at them, and swatching, but actually using them seems so time-consuming and out of sync with the kind of look I usually go for.
Loved this video! Great tips! And I’m no longer buying matte lipstick 💄 I don’t care if it’s a new formula or whatever claims it makes. I’m done with matte lipstick. The ones I have that are a color I like I will just add a gloss on top. Hate matte lipsticks, and I have so many too 😢
I bought the ND Bronze Palette because it was so beautiful. I was sure I would be transformed into a bronze goddess. Nope. I was still pasty white with too warm eyeshadow
I use all these tips. When I see sometthing I want to try I put it on a wishlist, then when I run out of something I roll go to my list and pick something in that category. No backups for me either. I like to try new products. Exception is mascara. I have found a couple I roll stick to because I like them. I agree with you with dupes too. I waste too much money trying to find the cheaper one. Rather just stick to the high end I know I like.
Hi Jen ; I regret buying dupes; in my experience don’t perform as well and I end up wasting money. In the end it is best for me to save or wait and buy the original product.
Just found your channel and am absolutely loving it. Purchasing foundations is a nightmare but after watching some of your previous videos I think you may be my shade twin (I currently wear EL Futurist Ecru and previously No.7 Calico though it's maybe a shade too light), could you maybe link a list of your favourite foundation shade matches for your tone? So appreciate this video ❤
Great topic. I’m guilty of buying back ups and forgetting about them. I also regret the gift with purchase makeup bags with samples. I hardly ever use them.
All very good points. It boils down to practicing a little self-discipline, and just saying no! It really isn’t that hard, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. Truly.
For me it has been blind buying foundations. So I'm very pale with a very cool pink undertone. I also have dry skin. Its so hard to find something that is both pale enough with the right undertone and work for dry skin. So i've learned that I need a tester, as the shade can be good, but during the day it will look bad. I have 4 foundations sitting in my drawer... Which is embarrassing. The shades are good, but it doesnt work for my skin.
I agree with you on so many points. I do avoid dupes because I really don't want to risk my eyes or skin breaking out. I buy it than I end up passing it along out of regret, I am trying very hard to not be influenced when I have products I know work and don't bother me.
Love this... it's so much about learning to know yourself and your own preferences/needs and just being true to that. Though it may take a lot of sampling before you figure it out 😁 Speaking of sampling, one thing I have liked about samples is that it's helpful to really get an idea of how long it takes to use something up. A sample bottle of perfume or shampoo or cleanser isn't a single 'serving'. For me it helped me understand how long it would reasonably take me to use up a full sized product, and helped with reducing the impulse to buy another and another...
Agreed! I’ve actually started buying sample or mini versions of products that I don’t go through very fast. I don’t wear makeup every day so it doesn’t make any sense to have full sizes of everything, especially if it’s expensive or has a shorter shelf life.
I have one huge regret. It is not buying backups of Clinique’s Angel Red lipstick. It was available year after year and then they changed the formula. The color did not translate like the original. Then I found the original in a Clinique zippered pouch that you get as a gift with purchase. It was full size tube and I will be sad when it is gone. Why can’t they just leave best sellers alone and not try to improve them?
This is one of those necessary kick in the pants topics. I definitely can relate as I've regretted trying trendy things I know I won't use. Or like you said with foundation shades, forcing a shade just because I wanted to try the formula. And then getting a million of the same color lipstick or eyeshadow!
I was nodding along to every single point. I remember making a video chatting about taking advice from people who don’t share your preferences/style/skin tone, but you brought up a lot more good points. Great video, Jen - thank you!
I m in a small town sorta too. I notice the same thing when I go out in public, like today in a restaurant with my bestie, she and I were the only ones wearing makeup. But everywhere I go in town I notice some women wear makeup but minimally. I'll wear what I want and I don't compare my makeup wearing to others. But I definitely have noticed the same thing as you in your town. I'm also guilty of buying something due to being caught up in the hype or being influenced. I've really been trying hard to be conscious of my spending $ on things I truly am interested in or what I know I'll use consistently
I appreciate your help on all this stuff. I'm 60 and I like the next thing going Viral. But half of time I seem to go to ELF cosmetic because most likely dupes. Plus cheaper, so easy to get. ❤
Great content! I have a select few creators that I feel like we have a similar agenda, I look to you and the handful of other creators I follow to guide me in purchase. I am a bartender who loves makeup, but I do not have the luxury of spending Tom Ford prices without an endorsement from trusted creator, with that said a few things do not apply to me like having back ups, but what resonates with me is the hype purchase. I get so excited for a product, put it in my cart and if I am able to go a week and not purchase, its about the noise and not the desire. Thank you Jen, I love how you go from color pop to Denona with honest thoughts!
Wow! Thanks for doing this. Oh I am just so guilty of a lot of those. I just love makeup, just so deeply in love!!! I love putting on & wearing makeup. I rarely buy hi-end but still... I appreciate you immensely for being with us !
Love this video! Dupes really resonated with me - I’ve wasted so much money trying to dupe. I should have bought the original in most cases. It also helps realizing that I don’t need any more eyeshadow palettes or blushes…
YOU ARE SPEAKING TO ME!!! I live in a town of like 700 people, work in a town of 6000…… makeup is not a priority. But I used to live in a town of 1 million+….. NOT the same.
WOW that's a huge change! I've always lived in small towns, except I do live an hour from NYC, so if I go there I don't feel out of place with a lot of makeup on, haha!
Great video! I’m curious, other than Stone Cold Fox (which I think is seriously perfect) what other neutral eyeshadow palettes do you consistently reach for?
What a great video!!! Thank you Jen!🎉🎉🎉😂 I have spent alot of money knowing that some of these products aren't going to work! Here are my top 3 regrets: 1. Buyng the wrong shade especially (when trying to choose a shade online) 2. Falling for the Hype 3. Buying things you don't like 😂
Jen, I found the Avon FMG Wash off Waterproof mascara a gem and very inexpensive when it’s on sale which is fairly frequently. It’s actually a tubing formula that comes off so easily with cleanser and water but otherwise just wears SO well! It’s decent for length and volume nothing glamorous but great for everyday, highly recommend 🎉😊
I literally just cancelled my Boxycharm subscription yesterday. I realized I haven’t gotten one item I’ve loved or could even use in about a year. I end up posting them on Poshmark for a fraction of what I paid, or giving them away for free, or Storting them away thinking I’ll use it later. I love getting that cute pink box in the mail but all excitement wains after the first 60 seconds when I realize I’ve wasted another $38 on stuff I can’t use. I’m also proud that even though I’ve been waiting for the new Givenchy powder to be released today, I only bought the mini size and not the full size. I have a full and mini size of the original, and it does not work for me, so I used some restraint and bought the mini only in hopes the new formula will work for me, without having FOMO of not having the full size. Makeup is so fun but you have to be smart, especially in this recent world of influencers, social media, and FOMO.
I completely agree with you on everything - I made all the mistakes: backups that have expired; sale items I would not pay FP on; hyped/FOMO items that didn’t suit me; etc. Great advice!
I so regret buying Natasha Denona Glam when I passed through the US on my way to live in Mexico. I believe I would like the I Need a Nude palette, but the Glam palette isn't for me. I went into Sephora and bought a bunch of stuff in December 2022 that influencers were raving about AND I DIDN'T EVEN OPEN IT AND LOOK AT IT BEFORE I BOUGHT IT!!! That's a sign of being too heavily "influenced". I regret it so much because I've only used it once and I have no way to even sell it or pass it along. Ugh!
I regret the glam too, but I have repotted my favourite shades and got rid of the rest now I use it much more. I really dislike the darker shimmers and that yellow gold and I was forcing myself to use them because I felt guilty.
It took me years to realize that I don’t like most lip products or foundations. I kept trying new ones thinking the right formula would magically change my mind, but I hate being able to feel stuff on my face/lips. It always felt weird to admit that because those are staples of so many people’s makeup routine. But I now know that I have like 3 lipstick formulas that I don’t hate and the occasional tinted moisturizer to just even out my skin tone a bit. No matter how pretty it looks on a UA-camr, I know that lip gloss or full-coverage foundation will just be a sensory nightmare for me and it’s an easy pass.
Before I found out I was extremely cool toned and muted/desaturated, I would buy things I saw that looked pretty and I thought I’d really like based on the look of them or hearing about them. But, since I’ve found out what works well for me, it’s helped me so much! It can stink sometimes because there’s not a ton of options that fit my specific wants BUT that saves me money too AND when I DO find things that actually do fit my specific wants I get so excited! Unlike before when 99% of the time I’d be so disappointed because it would look awful on me or the shade would look completely different on me because of my cool/desaturated skin! For foundations not matching, it’s pretty rare for me to find a perfect match that’s fair enough, cool enough, and muted. I’ve only found 2 perfect matches. Some that are close but not perfect. So I use white, blue, and lavender mixers! Game changer! Now if I love a foundation formula but can’t get a perfect shade match, I can add some mixers to make it perfect for me!
@@marianekalis1533 LA girl and Shop Miss A (AOA brand) have mixers that work really well. I haven’t found a lavender in the drops, so I have to get lavender color corrector in a tube (Nyx has one, physicians formula has one, and LA girl but there’s has a brush tip applicator so doefoot is usually easier than that)
Jen, You have the Best group of people following you!

I don’t see a lot of people wearing as much makeup as me where I live, but it never puts me off. I love makeup.
@@JeanieD I’m 58.👍

Need to stop buying eye shadow that looks good on a creator w/ a large eye that's has a lot of space. My eye is drooping and hooded ans small😢
Or like me who likes to watch in "Fast Forward " mode by holding my finger down on the video to make play faster .🤣
Great video
I’ve purchased a backup I Need a Nude palette. I figure if I don’t use it before I die, my daughter will take it. 😂
This is one of the reasons why I watch all of your videos. You're one of the most realistic beauty UA-camrs there are. I appreciate you Jen! 🥰
Same here! Jen is the best❤
Me too! She is very much appreciated ❤
I have a huge eyeshadow collection and as a way to encourage myself to use them all, take one palette out for the week and dabble with looks. Then rotate to another each week. It's my only artistic expression and love it!
That's such a great idea! I need to start doing something like that.
I do the same, but in all products. Bronzer, blush, powder. It's fun, and everything gets used.
Yes I pick 3 palettes for the week and just play around.
At work sometimes I feel a bit self conscious tho, but I’ll get a lot of compliments so 🤷🏼♀️
same
same. You don't have to look "made up" when you're made up. That's the point. Same with looking put together. It can be accomplished in a comfortable & casual way. Leggings & oversized tees just doesn't scream put together imo.
Same. I'll even do a bit of makeup before hitting the gym .. lol.
I feel like the pendulum is swinging so hard away from that lockdown makeup buying surge and people are buying less and less. It's all about quality over quantity now, and even more than that it's about what works for you, not what egeryone is talking about. This video is such a good reminder of that!
Applying a full look now is trying to makeup for the 3 yrs lost due to lockdown
Tbf, current makeup prices have been going through the roof and a lot of us can't afford to buy new stuff. Sad reality of inflation!
@@scapwell inflation now is nothing compared to what it was in the 70s when I was a teenager first buying make up. Now I’m 61 and I buy a lot of elf products that are really good and cheap as heck! It feels good to have a lot of lower end options that are still decent.
I think we all bought more in covid shutdown, had time to play with make-up, but real life is back . ..

Ms Jen Phelps, you are the voice of reason that everyone needs to hear. Thank you for making this video.
I dropped so much money at department store counters for those darn GWPs. 😅
i do the same but you can return the original product and keep the gift so why keep a product you arent gonna use?
This video makes so much sense. And I have become a much more “aware” consumer. I really really wanted the ND Golden palette. I love her formula, I LOVE the packaging of that palette, but I don’t wear gold eyeshadows. All of my palettes that have a gold color are completely untouched. I would like to think I will wear gold, but in all reality, I will not likely use them. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.
Great video!
The one that really hit me was the backups! I just recently started to realize just what you said: by the time I would be ready to use it, there’s a real possibility that a better product has come out.
Not to mention how old the back up would be by then!
Oh boy I’m a backup queen! If I love something I immediately buy a second one. And it takes me forever to even get to the second one if I ever do!!
I still have 3 Stila black stay all day eye liners put away. Already found others I like and always forget to reach for the stored Stila’s.
❤Klarissa
So sorry the loss of your mom🙏🏻❤️
The lavender powder to counter yellow tones is genius! ❤

This was a much needed reminder to so many of us.😂
It's easier said than done, haha! But I try to follow these tips as much as I can. :)
Heck yes!
Yes!! I should have mentioned that...I have it and it really works well.
Another thing that helps is a lavender powder. I'm fair to light with cool, pink undertones (like Jen). So many foundations lean yellow.... so lavender helps neutralize the yellow.
I didn't like the way adjusters messed with the formula of the foundation.

But after playing around with a lot of makeup, the upside is that now I do feel confident about my preferences and I’ve been way more discerning with my more recent purchases.
Been there, done that, too. I second your “ugh”.
It's like dating an ex: "Maybe they've changed."
This is one of the reasons I'm so grateful to you. You try things for me and then I decide if I need to get it. ❤
I've always enjoyed your content, but I think you really shine in these conversational, opinion videos.
I put waterproof mascara over regular mascara as a second coat and it seals everything in reasonable well like if my eyes watered a bit I’d be fine. It’s easier to remove too because the regular mascara under it buffers and so it’s not totally stuck on your lashes.
Great tip, trying tomorrow!
Your hair looks amazing parted this way! The slight volume and curl looks so flattering! Love the color as well.
I mostly agree with you except for Ulta 21 days. That’s when I try products and usually get some really great ones I’d never have purchased otherwise.
🥰🥰🥰
❤❤❤ I agree with you, there is too many products launch some are just not for me, whether it be makeup, skincare. I miss the days when youtube was just about doing makeup and not about purchasing a lot of things that we don't use.
This is a great video topic! Thanks, Jen for sharing your wealth of knowledge!❤
I can relate to all of this. For me, it’s buying things that looked good on my younger self, but not anymore (purple or dark eyeshadows/liner). 💜
That top is adorable omg
Aw thank you! 🥰
I love how down-to-earth and honest you are. Thank you for being such a breath of fresh air! Sending love from France ❤

That’s just not right, I would have sent it back then ordered the cheaper price😊
@@BlingyBea that’s what I immediately thought I’d do, but within a couple of days before I could get it sent back, it went up $12. 😒
Usually, prices drop during the night. Just so you know. For most products on Amazon.
@@drina4706 makes sense, but I won’t pay much attention to their sale next time.
@@carrielassiter8455 now that really is not right.
This so spoke to me! I never thought how much I might have bought for my fantasy self or because it’s a trend.
I’m a new subscriber. You popped into my YT feed & I’ve been binge watching your videos for a week or two. I simply love your honest reviews. I have fair skin just like you so this subject really spoke to me. I was wondering what are your favourite brushes?
Your points in this video are so true. Thanks.
For what it’s worth, I love when you deep dive into the formula of products!! I don’t skip over that part :)
I already came to some of the conclusions myself - but not before I have a stuffed makeup bag with way more than I actually use !
finally someone with my similar coloring! thanks for listing what you are using! Good brows!
I agree about buying duplicates. I call it the search for the perfect brown eye shadow 😊
Or search for the perfect pink lipstick 😊
I have so many "my lips but better" balms 😅
Your look in this video really suit you - hair, makeup and shirt color…. Chef’s kiss!
Hate matte lipsticks, and I have so many too 😢
Thank you Jen! You are a beautiful soul inside and out. We all appreciate your honesty...so rare these days. God bless! ♥
I don’t think you should regret any of your make up because you’re reviewing them for us, so it’s part of your UA-cam channel!
You make some excellent points here. I have to stop myself often from buying something I don’t need. Now I will hear your voice when I am tempted 😊
Maybe you can take it with you and swatch lipsticks in store and try to find something comparable
@@jazwhoaskedforthis Good point! I may have to do this when I finish the tube.
Oh my goodness I do all of these things! Thank you for bringing attention to it!
@@JenPhelps it was SUCH a hard change. It took YEARS to adjust. I can’t imagine raising our kids anywhere else though.
Here are my top 3 regrets:
1. Buyng the wrong shade especially (when trying to choose a shade online)
2. Falling for the Hype
My problem is buying all kinds of skin care hoping for some fabulous flaw corrector results!
Ugh. Everything you say is true. I just love makeup and the next great thing! Thank you for a much needed reminder!
Oh yes, all great points! I loved this video, I’m guilty of many 😅
Before I found out I was extremely cool toned and muted/desaturated, I would buy things I saw that looked pretty and I thought I’d really like based on the look of them or hearing about them.
What brand are the mixers?
What is the lavender mixer?
What is the lavender color used for, I’ve never seen that color.
@@BlingyBea it makes it more muted for me ☺️ (it helps with foundations that lean too yellow to cancel that out)
@@marianekalis1533 LA girl and Shop Miss A (AOA brand) have mixers that work really well. I haven’t found a lavender in the drops, so I have to get lavender color corrector in a tube (Nyx has one, physicians formula has one, and LA girl but there’s has a brush tip applicator so doefoot is usually easier than that)
Great video Jen❤❤❤
Great topic... hits home!❤
Yes. Number 1 for sure 😂. Def a lot of makeup reqrets! Love this vid!
