Hi Jen! I am a freelance makeup artist. I went to esthetics school in the late 90s, and in the color theory portion of that course, they taught us about contrast. It makes it easy to explain to someone who is starting to do makeup and feels lost in what makeup they should wear. I am happy to see this making a comeback. It makes it less complicated for many people. When I worked at counters, I would explain that to my clients that were afraid of makeup. Thank you for this video and talking about this topic. Many people will benefit from it.

I have fair skin and black hair and have struggled with why I can’t wear the “no makeup makeup” look and feel fully put together… This finally made it click! I’m high contrast and “need” more makeup to look “balanced” in my opinion. Thank you for defining this for me! 🙃

Discovering this made such a difference in how I shop for makeup. Like you say, it’s not about “rules,” it’s just about giving people more tools to make informed decisions. Absolutely buy and wear whatever speaks to your heart, but if you find that what you’re wearing isn’t looking the way you want it to look, this info might be helpful. ❤

I wish everyone could be happy with the brows they have -- thin, thick, straight, arched. If someone has naturally thick, dark brows, great, but I have hated seeing black monster caterpillars drawn on so many otherwise beautiful people in the last however many years. Overly heavy brows, if they're not natural, overwhelm one's actual eyes. But neither should they be tweezed to oblivion. Great video, as always!!

I am a high contrast with fair skin. My mom always said I was a "winter" which meant I could wear rich dark tones, cranberry, navy, purple, etc. I haven't ever heard of high contrast but it makes total sense. I love pink but there are certain shades (lighter versions) that look horrible on me. It really washes me out. But now I see why. Thanks! 💖💖💖

I have found it hard to distinguish the difference between everyday and full glam makeup on myself. I feel comfortable going out with a smoky eye and dark lipstick early in the day, and I don’t feel overdone. I don’t always do that, but I find a lot of colors can just get washed out or ‘lost’ (they don’t show up) on me. I guess I just wasn’t made for subtle. 😊

I totally believe the contrast theory, and your point about it can change with seasons, as well. I’m high contrast, but become more medium in the summer. It really explains why I try to duplicate a low contrast look I see a creator do and it just looks lackluster on me. I don’t bother anymore. It never works. My “nude” lips always are much darker than a lot of nudes out there. I look like a corpse with traditional nude lipsticks. It’s bad.

High-contrast people can also play up more than one feature without looking stagey.

Hi Jen the contrast trend is based on colour analysis and the six dominant characteristics version of that.
The reason you can wear warm tones so successfully despite having cool toned skin is your hair. It’s a warm blonde making you overall a bit more neutral. I have extremely cool toned skin with ashy blonde hair and I look terrible in warm tones. I don’t stick to grey for a neutral 😂, but light taupe to dark mushroom is a great shade to use instead of warm browns on cooler toned people.
I have never bought anything from shein thankfully 😱😱😱😱. I might have needed some mental health help if I found anything like that in a package ( I really don’t like insects or even worse scorpions 😱). Best wishes x

I think the opacity of your makeup can make a huge difference too. Depending on what I’m wearing, if my hair is up or down, and considering contrast levels, the sheerness or full opacity of makeup on lips and eyes can highly impact the look. It’s always fun to play around with all these factors and come up with a “perfect” personal look.

All warm palettes but cheaper than ND I need a warm. If you don’t mind taking one for the team I would love that!

I stopped coloring my hair a few years ago at 42 just to watch the beautiful progression of grays-I figure we only get one shot to watch that-however I do love those stripes! So fun. As a person who colored my hair for 30 years I’ve tried everything 😂 so much so I was shocked at my natural color and how much dimension it has, I had been paying hundreds of dollars every couple of months for dimension-you never know what’s under there ladies until you let it grow out! 🥰

Fuller brows most definitely are more forgiving and youthful. 😊 As a veteran makeup artist of 30 years, I can't tell you how many eyebrow disasters I have had to correct and improve for a client giving them tips/instruction for future reference. Sometimes, eyebrow hairs never grow back or will come back thinner or sparsely. 😊

I’m so glad u stopped using SHEIN and Sheglam because they are a horrible company. They treat their grown employees horribly, so I can’t imagine how bad they treat kids who work there. They r so incredibly bad for the environment and just a $hitty company. Some influencers went there and got paid and quickly assured us that everything was ok with the company because they paid them money. Yeah, those influencers have no morals. I’m glad u do. Also, thanks for sharing this. Now I kinda know why I feel uncomfortable with red or darker brown lipsticks. It seems more dressy. It makes sense.

Love your makeup today! Since I have gone grey (with many different tones of grey) I’ve been loving a more natural look leaning toward the cool side. I was naturally dark haired but since my brows have become more sparse, I fill them in wth a cool grey brown now. My natural dark brown now looks too harsh.

My natural brow color is dark brown with a mix of light blonde hairs - I have no idea why. I've learned to use a blonde or light brown to fill them in and color the blonde hairs to look more similar to the darker ones. For some reason, using darker brow colors that match the darker hairs looks too harsh on me. To me, anyway.

It’s more than hair, skin tone and eye colour that factor in contract or lack there of.
Some faces just absorb colour and others reflect it. If your complexion naturally absorbs colour - you’ll need higher contrast, more opaque, saturated colour cosmetics. I have light skin, dark hair and hazel eyes. But my skin reflects colour a lot so I look better with lower contrast, less saturated shades that tend to be sheerer.

When I used to get blonde highlights in my hair, at some point I had more blonde than I did my natural brown. I remember doing my makeup and thinking, “why does my makeup look so off?” I immediately knew it was the blonde in my hair. I had went from being a high contrast to a low contrast and I wasn’t used to seeing myself like that. I went back to my natural color not only because of the makeup looking off but my hair needed a break from the bleach. Now that I’m a little older I use a medium golden brown hair dye and my hair is dark enough for the style of makeup I like yet light enough to not wash me completely out.

In the last century, fashion even had more freedom than right now. There was even a tutorial from the 40s showing girls that what type of makeup fitted them. Even in the 2000s it was the case. Nowadays, especially since the Kardashian aesthetics popularized, I always see people on social media look the same. Even those "what's in my bag video" I see the same products in videos from different influencers. Also, those shady brands are cheating their consumers.

Aw I'm sorry to hear that! So far everything has been ok for me for the most part. The long cardigan I got was a little too big and I could have sized down but otherwise the fit has been good for me. Cashmere is definitely prone to pilling (all of my wool/cashmere sweaters pill from every brand I have) and Quince suggests hand washing it to kind of slow down that process but it's a pain in the neck. I bought a pill shaver on Amazon and it really helps to clean up my sweaters and make them look like new!

For skinny brows, it's much ''safer'' to shave them then pluck them. Plucking can lead to damage where that hair never grows back, but shaving just removes the hair at the surface leaving the important deeper bits alone.

I think thin brows suit a certain look. On me I'm staying with my natural brows, skinny would look silly on me but on my mother they worked. The difference was (btw we didn't look related at all) she was very pale, pink undertone, round light blue eyes, light brown hair, thin pale lips, narrow nose. Narrow brows looked really good on her and she definitely couldn't have rocked bushy brows. Mostly I think sticking to what works for your features and colouring always looks good, regardless of trends.
