- Just a little tid bit about my experience trying to get maintenance done to my car on my own. After this ordeal I NEVER take my cars just anywhere... the wrong "professional" can mess up your whole life. Here's how being a woman can suck sometimes. Be careful. Be aware. Be mindful. My female friend worked as a mechanic for many years, and she had horror stories about customers telling her to her face, “I want a man to look at this. I want to make sure it’s done right.”

Ewww wtf are you serious?? Like do you not know that we’re meticulous, detail oriented, and a hell of a lot smarter? What would take a man an hour would take us 15 minutes. cmon now. I’m so sorry that she had to go through that!! 😫

They would say, “I’m just going to give you the same answer she did.” The guy would get defensive and say he just wanted to be “sure.” Same bullshit you already know those dudes pull when they’re called out 🙄🙄
my mechanic has gotten SO many more customers because of me, im good at doing my own shit, theres just a handful of things i cannot do, because i dont have the tools etc to do them, took my car on in to him as i couldnt find the one i was booked at as google maps fucked out, said to him hey i know x and y is wrong, got that shit at home to fix it but i need this thing fixed before i do the other 2 things. he asked do i live close? yup 2 streets over. oh okay, can you go get those parts and we will just throw em in cos it wont take us more then an extra 10 to just do it.
k sure. and they did it. no extra charge. all 4 men there were gushing over my toddler at the time, gave me some ideas as to how to do my next project by myself a little easier... next week, GF needs something done to her car, so i thought hey ill send her to this dude i went to.
he quoted her 1,000$ less then everyone else, told her she will need a few more things done in the next few months, come back we got you for that, if you get the parts from here, we will only charge you hours.
i went back for my rego shit a few months later and was thanked big time for sending my friends.... cos my GF told her friends about these decent dudes, who told others and they kept using hey purple told us to come here and see what you can do..
got my sports cars clutch and some other rather expensive repairs done for $500 for sending them thousands in customers and helping get their name known as men who wont rip off women.
and not one of them questioned the fact i work on my own car, none talked down to me, asked me good questions about how my cars ran and if i had an issue, it was hey this is up, maybe got x time til you have to replace it, be careful we can grab you with the tow truck if needed, just call

Thats why my dad taught me how to change my own oil as soon as I had a car so that I wouldnt be caught in this same situation. Happened all the time to my friends because they didnt know, or their boyfriends didnt know. I changed some of my friends oil. My car is 24 some years old, and still running.

My mom taught me (I don’t have a dad) her dad taught her how to change the lights, oil, A lot of things I can’t remember but she’s been teaching me some of them bc I’m 15.5 so I’m starting to learn to drive

Whenever you get new parts for your car, especially air filters, write your name in some area that they won't see right away but that you know to check. When they claim a part is yours, check to see if your name is where it should be.
A lot of times they keep an example of dirty or old parts under the counter or somewhere equally accessible so that they can up sell you. Most of the time, your item is in the car and the one they're showing you is a prop to promote sales.
When she said he pulled it out from nowhere after she refused the first thing, I knew he was being shady.
Protect yourselves ladies. Sooo many people will take advantage the second they think they can.
Edit : also if they tell you something needs to be replaced, have them show you the part INSIDE the car. If they're trying to take advantage, they will make up some excuse for why they can't show you on the car because they know it doesn't need it.
That's why I always take the time to appreciate all the dads out there that literally go with their daughters any time they go to get their car looked at/worked on..ain't gon get my ass 🤣🤣🤣
My dad was a mechanic and one you could trust. He always told me that if I'm at a auto shop and something doesn't seem right, it isn't. He said to always throw in the "if this was your wife/daughter/mother, would you be doing this?" Line to them and if they're honest, they'll tell you. Just something to keep in the back of your mind
My dad is also a mechanic and him and i have had an agreement since I started driving in high school (I’m 22 now) that if I buy all the parts he’ll do all the auto work for free

That’s why I go to valvoline, they do it in front of you while your in the car so there’s no way they can lie and they show you the new oil all clean 😭

Everytime I've ever taken my vehicle in they pull that shit. Oh it needs this and this and that and this. The best part is, my boyfriend is a heavy duty mechanic... My truck only goes to those idiots when he doesn't have time to touch it and I want whatever it needs to do be done like today. I don't even tell them, I just smile and nod.
whenever i have a mechanic tell me that i “need” a part replaced, i ask for them to show me the part in my car that needs to be replaced. usually they refuse bc they know damn well the part doesn’t actually need replacing

A similar thing happened to me, they up charged me for a service. I knew they were being sketchy but didn’t know they had charged me more than usual for that service until I went home and told my uncle. They really be doing us dirty.
I personally never had an experience where them boys at the shop tried to play me but y'all know Imma hit them with the "let me call my daddy" or "let me call my husband". No one playing us besties!!

That makes me so mad for you. Places like that totally do things like that. My husband actually knows about cars and does most of the work on our cars. We were going on vacation so he just wanted to get a quick oil change before we left because he didn’t want to get messy and didn’t have the time to change it himself. He got it done and didn’t check anything because an oil change is like the most simple thing you can get done. While we were on vacation the car started making weird noises and seizing up. So my husband checks the oil and says that it looks really weird because he can’t seem to read the dipstick. He ends up taking it to a shop to look at it and it turns out they had never taken the old oil out and just put new oil in. It caused damage in the engine and thankfully it was under warranty and the dealership took care of it. My husband went back to talk to the oil change place and they tried to tell him he didn’t know what he was talking about and then tried to play it like my husband must have put extra oil in the car. Horrible horrible people.

Yep, most woman I know always has to have a man with them when they get car maintenance because they always treat us like we're dumb.
I just recently went into an auto shop to get my tire replaced and he starts trying to upsell me (of course) and I told him I'm only here for what I said and to not speak to m of anything else because I know how they treat women in this industry and he looked at me so dumb-founded and confused like he didn't know wth I was talking about... BOY BYE!!

This is why anytime I go to a car repair place my dad is there. I even have him act like it's his car sometimes.
And what's so aggravating about your situation is changing oil isn't even a hard or complicated task. All they had to do was drain the old oil and put some new oil with a new oil filter(if it needs changed) in there🙃
The only places I've come across with good customer service in car shops is my trusted mechanic and discount tire. Everywhere else acts like I'm dumb
Girl this has happened to me!!!! I was 19 then. I took my car to Walmart and not even a full day passed, and I was on the highway, and exactly the same happened, my car started slowing down and just kept losing speed even when I kept trying to drive it, thank God that at that moment no cars were coming, their was no cars, and I stopped on the side and my car started smoking girl!!!!! I freaked out, and then all of a sudden there was FIRE!!!! I felt like I couldn't get out, I was panicking and when I finally got out I gave like 5 steps away and I heard and saw like it made like a little explosion, the firefighters came, cops ambulance, I was freaking out, crying, I felt hopeless because I lived in my car that's was my transportation my home, at the moment I had left home due to abuse and I had no where to go. But I know God took that car away because I was a CRAZY driver, I would speed, and I was irresponsible. God knows what he does and why.

Miss ma’am!!!! I went to Meineke when I was 19 years old for an oil change and I came back to pick up my car it was overheating, didn’t want to run, smoke bellowing out under the hood. They told me my radiator was completely shot and I would have to pay around $2k to fix it… I bought the car for $2k. 🥴
After having an emotional breakdown I went back home and my then boyfriends step dad replaced my radiator cap and it was good as new. They just wanted to screw a young woman out of money for not having knowledge about cars.
My now husband taught me how to change oil, change tires, and jump a car so yay for no more scammers. 🤣❤️
Girl I feel you! Every time I go to a new mechanic it’s a struggle to be heard, I get shut down or they tell to come back. I always make sure to stay when I can and watch what they do. But with a 9 to 5 job it’s very difficult.

My Dad owns a gas station, he has mechanics there. He don’t play that all my friends/ church community goes to him. It’s not worth getting trash service, being swindled and paying a fortune.
This is exactly why I make my dad call the maintenance places for me. For some reason whenever I call it’s always more expensive . But when he calls 10 minutes later they magically find discounts for him that aren’t available for me. Crazy how car places work differently for males and females.
Oh wow, I was already watching an old story time and this one came on and I’m like… I haven’t heard this one before🧐. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a new story! 😂
I’m so glad that the mechanic I go to is SUPER reliable and they’re are quick. There have been times other minor shit has been wrong with my car and they just fixed it for me at no charge (like a dim headlight, a dirty filter, etc). I used to go to Firestone and paid HUNDREDS of dollars for no reason. Now I go to smaller shop (I live in Dallas) and they get me right every single time. They’re super honest and never overcharge me when they easily could. They know me and my little car at this point 😂.

Girlll I’m so glad that you told this story so no one goes there. I’m so glad my sisters husband is a mechanic so we all take him if we’re getting a new car to look at it first and we all ask him to look at it if something is wrong.
Pepboys does this nonsense too. I went in to get my rear brakes done and they hit me with other “needed” fix-its that would total around $700 to $980. I told them that I’d bring my car in to get the work done the next day, but didn’t go back because I knew better. This wasn’t my first rodeo with them.
So funny because I watched this right before I got my tires checked for a nail and an oil change. Needed it done ASAP and Toyota was booked so I was paranoid about my upcoming services😂 anyways, you are such a good storyteller Nikki. I saw your video that talked about your passion for storytelling and just wanted to let you know that despite the hardships you endured (especially this one, omg!), I love how you can just look back and talk about things and always have a lesson/takeaway from it. I'm so glad that my dad is a mechanic. I never I had this problem. But my dad told me when he used to work at a mechanic shop, the other mechanics told him to do shady shit along with them and my dad was like no. He was a good man!😇😊

Girl please tell me why they did the SAME thing to me with the filter. I used to go there for oil changes when I was younger bc the local grocery store would give out coupons for oil changes and I too was tight on money back in those days and one time when I went to pay after requesting the oil change that was on the coupon, they told me I needed to tell them before I got the oil change that I would be using a coupon SOOOO I felt sketch after that and then eventually they told me about the filter and thankfully my fiancé was there with me and suggested to wait and we didn’t do it and never went back. So thankful for my mechanic now and not looking forward to finding a new one when we move! Loved the storytime as always, thanks for talking on real & helpful things ❤️💕
Something like this happened to me but it was the rotors. I went to get it changed and a month later i took it to another shop and they told me i needed new one and the ones on my car were old. I got it replaced with new ones and brought the old ones back. The owner told me to please not leave him a bad review and gave me the $300 back, in which he overcharged me for by the way.

I’ve never been in this situation but I’m at the giving up the key situation and I don’t think I would’ve given my keys bc if I’m coming first thing in the morning then there is no reason. You’ll see me first in line. (Not blaming at all just talking)

Gurl that is why I love and respect my hubby he is a master tech and I have seen some of these prices the Stealership aka Dealership hands out! They mark up parts like 100 yes what they are worth! You cannot win ! My hubby takes care of our cars and does everything,! I am so blessed that he has the knowledge and experience! Cuz they will mess up your life and want you to pay for it! People cannot be trusted to do good work! They just do not care!

Girl I completely understand I felt this way until I went to big O tires here in San Antonio. It got to the point where I was doing work on my own car changing out my brakes and all that. Most mechanics would bash especially women for that kind of stuff, but when I went to big O tires I actually got complimented on how well maintained my car is because I went in for an oil change and they give free inspections of the vehicle and the guy that did the oil change came out and personally told me I did a very good job maintaining my car and that meant the entire world to me I left a good review for him.
I RELATE! girl the past year the amount of times my car was in the shop for a engine check light due to a coolant valve on my 2009 prius ughhhhh i hadn't even made it down the street and it turned back on all last summer i was driving my moms 2020 equinox because she was working from home during the pandemic. Being 17 at the time paying for my insurance and gas working two jobs was not cutting it girl. I was paying for a car that wasn't being used and spent almost $3k in 2 months over that car. It runs now and im so grateful but still yall be careful where you go.

Oh my goodness!!! I went to the Honda dealer for a recall.. I get a call “your AC hose has a hole and is leaking a significant amount of liquid, but it’s not covered in the recall. We recommend you change you soon”. It was about $600 to change. I freaked out and asked my dad to go with me because he understands cars better than me. The SAME worker tells him “it has a small hole on the hose and is leaking a little bit” I guess the big hole miraculously shrunk once they saw I wasn’t alone 😒

I am SO SO thankful that my man does our oil changes on all of our cars at home. Some... MOST mechanic shops will screw you over. That air filter. On my Toyota RAV4, it's behind the glove box. You pull in a couple pins on the sides and it drops more. Go to the store and buy the correct filter which you can find on google for like $15 and change it yourself. That is absolutely heart breaking that they did that to you.
Honestly grateful my boyfriend is a car guy that talks to me about every type of car, their parts, function, and the ins and outs of car maintenance.

This exact same thing happened to my Mercedes😢😢 I haven’t drove it for 2 years but I am finally getting to the point where I can get another car 🚗 definitely won’t be a luxury car lol, This was such a life lesson learned. Thank for the story bestie 💕

I'm blessed enough to never have experienced this. My dad's a mechanic so he makes sure my cars well taken care of. I was also pre-warned about this scheme by my parents. So anytime I have questions I call my dad.
