  • Ed & Dan continue to battle the elements and progress with the pond build; completing much of the stonework, the raised feature wall & water blade installation. It’s starting to look like a pond once again!

Ed this pond like all your other ponds is looking fantastic, cant wait to see the finished job. But this pond above many others that you have designed and built is crying out for a Surface Skimmer ! and l dont understand why you never seem to include one. Every autumn this pond will need constant attention to remove leaves day after day netting them out, where a Skimmer would collect them all for you and just need the collection basket emptying every couple of days, a five minute job at the outside. but that aside you and Dan have done a fantastic job often in real crap rainy weather. WELL DONE BOTH.

Hi Norman, thanks for watching and for your comment and feedback! Since filming two or three of the surrounding smaller trees have been removed, making way for further landscaping and planting, so overhanging foliage and any associated leaf fall in autumn is less of an issue. However I agree that surface skimmers most certainly have their place in a pond and in addition to leaf removal can add an extra level of water clarity by removing surface biofilms that collect pollen, dust etc etc. I must admit to finding skimmers a little fickle- requiring often very regular cleaning and intervention to prevent blockages when the skimmer is required most- in autumn! A few mins spent with a net weekly (both dredging the base and skimming the surface) I find is more then enough to remove the bulk of any leaf litter that might enter a pond and this time is often well spent examining livestock and plants etc- I find skimming a pond quite therapeutic!! Any leaves that do settle to the bottom won’t cause any issues in the short term during the winter months and often this debris on the base of the pond can be a useful refuge for fish (and amphibians) to overwinter in during any very cold snaps. This collection can then be easily netted out in the spring. I’m not a complete hater and have installed and retrofitted skimmers on various ponds- but would like to sit on this pond for a season and see how it develops and establishes. If it becomes apparent that some form of surface collection would be beneficial i’m sure the addition of a skimmer in the future wouldn’t be out of the question!
Thanks very much once again for watching!

I much appreciate how you go into detail explaining why you do things a certain way. Some may find this boorish I find it very informative. I think you are a true artist working with hardscape.

3 thing's....1.how are you so confident walking/working on the rubber liner? Id puncture it!...2.where is that stone from please?....3. that is an amazing job pal 👌👌

Hi there, thanks for your comment and my apologies for the slow response- the pond liner I tend to use is a very heavy duty 1mm thick firestone rubber, which is incredibly puncture resistant. However you’re right to query- in general i’d always be very cautious when walking on pond liner, first checking my boot treads to ensure I don’t have any sharp stones caught up. In warmer weather when putting new liner down I’d be in a pair of flip flops, Crocs or just bare foot. This stone used is York stone (natural/random walling) and was purchased from a supplier local ish to me called Lindsey clark brothers in Churt, surrey. Hope this helps and thanks very much for watching!

I absolutely love these videos. I've watched them all several times. I wish you were closer to me as you could do my pond. It's only a new liner and a few mods.

Why don’t the owners get rid of the tree next to the pool as each year it’s going to cause issues with the leaves, and fill the pond with , asidic leaves ect ,
