    Can I go off on a slight tangent. Without wishing to sound like Mr Nanny State, can we all be careful when we're at work. I was prising some glued on wood from a structure yesterday using a sharp tool. Some of it was pretty stubborn and I was giving it serious oomph. The wood suddenly broke free and I've drove the tool deep into the base of my thumb muscle. I actually screamed. I'm on thinners and it looked like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm not exaggerating to say you'd think my patio is made of red, not cream, flagstones. This morning my hand resembles an inflated washing up glove. Could be a trip to A&E. We all get distracted, take short cuts ( I was trying to get the job done before imminent rain. It was a side gate that I couldn't close because of rain swelling and I didn't want my security compromised ). Sometimes we use the nearest tool or think our normal glasses are sufficient to protect our eyes. I wear gloves almost 100% of the time when working, for cleanliness as much as anything else. I just forgot yesterday, not sure why, it's almost second nature for me to don gloves. They would have saved me, certainly lessened the injury. I've only been on here scant weeks and I'm already reporting a nasty injury. Life can change in the blink of an eye. Walking backwards to get a different perspective on a job is a real bad habit of mine. Something very small and light can bring you down when you're in reverse. Please guys, concentrate, don't rush, use the right tools and safety gear. You've only got one body and replacement parts aren't readily available. Ed has to talk and work at the same time to make the videos. After my own disaster yesterday my heart was in my mouth a few times watching him move around what is inevitably a chaotic area. Sorry to preach guys, I know I'm new on here and I sound like a Harry Enfield character. We all get complacent though. DON'T.

    Wish you were over here in Portugal, we would have you sort our pond out in a jiffy! We've got major leak issues with a waterfall into the pond. It's made of stacked rock slabs on concrete back-pointed with cement/sand (mixed at 4:1) to prevent water loss - clearly ineffectual despite retaining the pretty stone look. Where are we going wrong???

    Yeah, people plant those small, pretty “dwarf” conifers and Japanese maples around their new pond and after 20 years they have those massive blobs of foliage that hide the pond from sight. I don’t care for the look at all. They make the pond look smaller and not natural. Glad you got rid of at least some of them. At first I was afraid you were going to keep them.

    Do each individual light go into the oase transformer and then to the external transformer with photocell? Is there a different way to connect each light with wire?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 11 днів тому

      Hi there Tina- thanks for watching and commenting! Each light plugs directly into the included oase transformer (which can be positioned submersed in the pond or outside above water level). The one single power supply lead from the transformer then needs to be connected to a power supply-either via a standard socket, exterior switch box etc etc. Although I haven’t done so you could connect the oase transformer to the input of a photocell such as the below link, then the output from the photo cell to a power supply. This will allow operation of the lighting via an automatic light sensor! www.superlecdirect.com/8485-ellumiere-automatic-light-sensor/?hsa_acc=5149061780&hsa_cam=17724182852&hsa_grp=&hsa_ad=&hsa_src=x&hsa_tgt=&hsa_kw=&hsa_mt=&hsa_net=adwords&hsa_ver=3&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw4ri0BhAvEiwA8oo6F6sNK3MCiepENgJTduQVPFCNhYtm7OxHNbyT_Yb3OfAeQOsUmFww4xoCtwgQAvD_BwE Best, Ed

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 11 днів тому

      Although looking at this particular sensor looks like you would need one for every light and these aren’t submersible- so do some research before purchasing anything! Look ideally for a mains voltage light sensor that can be plugged in before the transformer! Best, Ed

    Hi Ed, I'm new to your channel and enjoy how you create a pond. One issue I noticed you don't look to create a natural eco system using Bog filters and inlets filters using natural plants... is there a reason, why? I'm looking to create my own pond and thinking on bog and inlets filter only and don't want to make a mistake.

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 14 днів тому

      Hi there! Welcome to the channel and thanks so much for watching and commenting. I get asked this quite frequently regarding Bog/ wetland filtration in ponds; my reasoning for not using such methods for filtration is because I’m building Ponds for paying clients, who’s expectations are for their pond to have clean, clear water and utilising equipment that can be easily maintained by them (or me if I’m called in to service their pond!). For me, using modern filtration equipment such as displayed on my videos means I can essentially guarantee clear water-using some simple formulas any volume of water can clarified when utilising the correct size pump, filter and uvc. They same cannot be said for natural wetland filtration. I love the concept but it’ll take a while for a wetland filtration system to establish and mature and although only occasional, such systems will require maintenance and when they do it’ll be a bigger and more specialist job then performing a simple clean on, for example a pressurised filter system. I hope one day a client requests such a system as I’d love to build one! Best regards, Ed

Was not happy with my waterfall so stripped it back to create a new one, low and behold I made a tear in my EMPD liner while trying to move a large piece of Granite Rock, so today I’m following your guidelines on a repair😂. Could not get any of the sealant you recommended but managed to purchase a tube of gold seal, hope it works as well has yours. I would like the water clarity to be clear. Thanks.

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 14 днів тому

      Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting! With your enlargements you’re effectively doubling the water volume, which will have more of a demand on your filtration system. If you’re not adding more fish then I’d be confident that your filter would still be suitable to maintain clear water, but with the addition of more fish the balance could be tipped and you may struggle to keep the water clear. I would continue using your filter kit and monitor water quality/clarity visually. If in the future your struggle to keep the pond clear then upgrading your filtration would be sensible. Best, Ed

    Hi Ed another great video - love watching these for inspiration - can you tell me when you cement the rocks in place when building the pond, does any residue from the concrete go into the water and possibly cause problems which could harm the fish 4:30

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 14 днів тому

      Hi Emma, Thanks for watching and commenting- this is prob my most commonly asked question alongside “why don’t I include wetland filters in my designs”!! Yes, the mortar/cement will release lime and other harmful chemicals initially. When i’m building a pond i’ll let as much stonework as possible sit and soak in the pond water for a couple of weeks before fully draining, jet washing and re-filling. The majority of the lime (which is the main concern as this will buffer the water and make it very hard and alkaline) will be removed this way. I’d then wait for a good 4/6 weeks before adding livestock and potentially look to performing small partial water changes monthly (approx 20%) for the first six months or so after its been built to keep lime levels to a minimum. Hope that helps! Best, Ed

      Hi Helen, thanks for watching and commenting! Yes absolutely-very easy to split your Typha minima; you’ll find it easier to remove it entirely from the basket and may need to sacrifice the basket to do so. Once out of the pond carefully lay it down and gently tease apart the root mass-you’ll find lots of small rhizomous roots with shoots. Simply separate some of these and they’ll be good to pass on to your friend! Best, Ed

    Hi Ed, I've subscribed to your channel having recently really started to appreciate & understand my lifelong fascination with ponds, rivers, fish etc (I'm now 48). I'm hoping to enhance my knowledge & skills. I am mainly looking back over your films from 2020/21 atm, and have 2 questions: 1. Is there any reason why you appear to prefer mechanical filtration over bog filters? 2. I've not come across any build / rebuild you've shown that includes a skimmer, despite many ponds being vulnerable falling leaves, etc. Again, is there any reason for that? Thanks. Am loving your vids, keep them coming!! 👌

      Thanks for watching and commenting- I’ll have to do a video on why I don’t include wetland filters in my designs one day- its prob my most commonly asked question!! The simple and honest answer is because I need to incorporate simple reliable filtration methods that I can guarantee will maintain clean and clear water immediately, wont require a settling in or maturing period and are simple for myself, or clients to maintain on a regular basis. Wetland filtration is a fantastic concept and has been used for many many years in ponds reliably, however its impossible for me to guarantee clear water to a client with the use of such methods, and many people are not keen to wait for a system to mature before their ponds are clear. Maintenance on such natural systems- although less frequent then using more modern equipment- can be a much more intensive job, often involving fully draining and clearing sediment that has accumulated. Something that many people just aren’t prepared or capable of doing themselves. I’d love one day to implement a wetland filter into my designs however! As for surface skimmers- they have they’re place in a pond-particular in a koi pond and I have included them occasionally into some of my builds, but in general almost every pond I maintain over the years that has included a skimmer has some form of issue on a regular basis! Usually the skimmer basket blocking too regularly (which shows they are effective!!), floating skimmers blocking and floating to the surface etc etc… they have their place and I’ll always allow scope for additional installations should surface filtration be required in the future, but to me is not a necessity in general. Best regards, Ed

      @CrystalClearAquatics I really appreciate your thorough & comprehensive reply Ed, thanks; what you say makes total sense & I guess reflects the desire for practicality over idealism I guess, which clearly is of significance to your clients, and you've git to give them what they want right? I guess it boils down to bogs and skimmers being a labour of love for enthusiasts compared to convenience for others, albeit probably at a financial cost in terms purchase of expensive filtration equipment! (And most of your clients don't look short of a bob or two!!) 😅

      @CrystalClearAquatics since I feel bad that you didn't get to answer something, lol. How much do you charge for a "standard" pond? Like a 6x6x3, fully rocked in with a skimmer and waterfall? And how fast would you get that done? I understand there's a ton of variants but still.

    Excellent job I have started building a near replica of this pond in my allotment. Just about to install a solar and mini wind turbine on 4 leisure batteries to operate the pump thank you for this informative video 👍

    Thanks Ed, great explanation on how to set up the pond lights. We have Oase here in Australia and I'll be sure to use them in my new pond. After some research and watching your vids using Oase products I have found that they are a better product than others.

    I may be a little late in my comment here. I've just added one of these to my pond, fired it up, pump works, water goes in and out of filter. I turned it off for about half an hour and then turned it back on. Water now sprays out of the hose and theeaded seal of both the inlet and outlet, though it didn't do on the first run. The clips and threads are as tight as possible. Any ideas on what I need to do to stop the leaks?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 29 днів тому

      Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting-is water leaking from the hose connection where it screws onto the filter, or from where the hose is attached to the hose connection? If the former it’ll be the o rings haven’t seated correctly. Switch the pump off unscrew the hose tails , remove the o ring and check for and kinks/debris on them then refit and screw back on. Be careful when screwing back on the hose tail as the O rings can move out of place quite easily. Tighten till you meet resistance then torque a little more. Don’t over tighten as this can push the o ring out of shape and case a leak. If water is leaking from the hose then remove the hose from the hose tail connection, add some ptfe tape to the hose tail, refit hose and tighten with a suitable hose clip/jubilee clip. Good luck and hope this helps. Best, Ed

    What is the dept from ground do you start your shelf typically?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics 24 дні тому

      Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting! In general I like to ensure at least 6” of rock is submerged, but no more then 12” so digging the edging rock shelf between 6”/12” below maximum water level is what i’d aim for. Note I said water level and not ground level- you’ll need to decide what maximum water level you want to achieve and work all levels from this. Hope that helps! Best, Ed

    Love your channel and your practical easy to follow advice. Thank you. I have several filters on my small pond (1500 gallons) that I inherited and I am slowly upgrading/modifying. The Oase 8000 was left in sad state and hadn't been cleaned or maintained for several years. I followed your advice, changed the UV tube, and would now like to attack the foams filter media. 2 queries: 1) The foams are extremely expensive for what they are. You mentioned knock off foams. I am at least curious to see where they may be available (I am in the US) and how much they might be. 2) Wondering, since I have significant easy to clean mechanical filtration elsewhere, if I could simply put a few nylon zippered filter bags filled with K1 in in place of the foams, and then only gently use the handle to clean on a regular basis. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Seth

      Hi Seth, thanks for watching and commenting! Re non genuine filter foams- simply doing an online search for “filter foams for Oase filtoclear (add your filter model)” will throw up a mix of genuine and non genuine products (does in the UK in any case). Look for the cheapest ones and they’ll generally be unbranded replicas. As for replacing the filter media- great idea and in principle this could work however you wont be able to do any form of backwashing as such as there wont be any compression within the K1 media. The cleaning mechanism relies on compression of the filter foams- squeezing out muck which is flushed away. Best regards, Ed

      @@CrystalClearAquatics thanks for the reply. In the US, no generics show up, have been searching for some time. 🥺 Wasn't looking for compression, was just thinking the gentle pumping would loosen and allow the K1 to self clean . Thanks again.

    Oase AquaMax Eco Premium 5000 - 5.000 l/h - 35 w = 300 £ Aquael AQUAJET PFN ECO 6000 - 5,000 l - 29 w = 100 £ 😂

      Thanks for watching and commenting and good shout-the Aquael range of pumps is very competitive! However I doubt we’re comparing like for like on a fair basis and without knowing all the stats of the Aquajet pump, such as lift and comparing both pumps performances at different head heights it’s impossible to compare accurately. This is where rotor design is key-and where Oase have spent a lot of money researching- although both pumps may deliver comparable flow rates at zero head height (water level) I’d be interested to make comparisons at differing head heights and hose lengths. I would be pretty confident the Oase pump has a much better performance curve then the cheaper model, not to mention additional features such as the smart link, SFC control, second outlet etc. Thanks for highlighting this though! Best, Ed

      @@CrystalClearAquatics I watch all your videos from the beginning. I love your way of recording and your approach to the subject, as well as your love for nature. I don't know if your comparison will be objective since you cooperate with Oase, but I'd be happy to watch such a film. I have had Aquael pumps in two ponds for many years, but maybe you will convince me to change to Oase :) Sorry for my English. I'm better at talking and listening than writing. 😄

    When storing water to put back into the pond, how long can you hold it before putting it back in? Do you use aerators in the water or just leave it in the holding tanks? I assumed it would go "bad" and not good to re-populate the pond. If you have a chance could you address this?

    • @CrystalClearAquatics
      @CrystalClearAquatics Місяць тому

      Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting and for asking such a good question! You’re right- water removed from the pond and stored in static tanks will quickly deteriorate and change from the state it was originally in in the pond, particularly so if livestock are removed and stored separately. That said the water wont ‘go bad’ as such and will still be more preferable to use then filling the pond directly with tap water. Adding aeration or some sort of water movement to storage tanks if the water is to be held for a great length of time (more then a few weeks) would be beneficial. Hope this helps! Best regards, Ed
