      I am also stuck for months! But lets watch this video and hope it will give the answer ;)
      Ok after watching the video, I go with crested geckos. Because I prefer jungle-looking enclosures and people around me don’t like feeding insects when I am for a few days away. Also, I live in The Netherlands and the humidity here is almost always 80%
      HOWEVER, I am afraid of them pooping on me🤣🤣

    I had a bearded dragon for 10 years. Sadly he passed from cancer 😢. Missing him I started to research Leopard Geckos and ended up getting a male from a breeder who said this gecko wanted nothing to do with females anymore so he wanted to re-home him. He was 8 years old when I got and in perfect health. He just turned 9 and I love him so much. He’s the calmest gecko ❣️❣️

    Those are actually really good points you're making! And many people gloss over the questions you've highlighted at the beginning of the video. I've researched for months but nothing could have prepared me for my baby getting sick only a month after his arrival (birth defect that I wasn't aware of), thankfully I was ready and caught the issue early BECAUSE I went for a check up at the vet. Vet access is TOP PRIORITY. I already made my choice obviously (leos all the way!), but this is still a great vid even if you're partial to one or the other :p

    My parents would move out before they let me get a reptile. My brother loves snakes and my mom asked me once what would be a good beginner snake for him. (I doubt I'd ever own a snake but I love em and binge all sorts of animal care videos because hey, knowledge is power.) I said a Corn snake would be one of the best options, and when I mentioned mice she shut the whole thing down. So I sadly must wait until I am off on my own (and preferably done uni lol) until I can have a reptile. I'd love to own both Cresties and Leos at some point, but of course the million dollar question is which to get first.
    This video helped me decide on a Crested Gecko! I love the leafy forest look, for one, and I think the simpler diet would be best for me considering the most exotic pet I'v ever had was a Betta.
    (P.S: Just did some googling, and there's a wonderful seeming exotic vet clinic not terribly far from me!)

I was going to get just one Leopard Gecko but ended getting two when I did, totally worth it since they have such unique personalities and my cat loves them too. I have owned both and let me tell you my honest opinion, crested geckos area tap harder on maintaining especially with cleaning and feeding, a crested gecko poops a bit more often then a leopard gecko and they poop on the foliage on the sides of the enclosure, on everywhere they can, you also need to clean their food dish way more often and have good sanitation where you prepare their food mix so they don’t grow in bacteria and get sick, yes you can keep them at low room temp but that doesn’t mean you should and it doesn’t mean your household will always have the perfect 75 f which means depending on where you live you might need some heat source or cooling source, leopard geckos on the other hand yes you do have to feed live feeders, but you don’t have to feed crickets you can feed easier handling feeders like mealworms or bsfl, and they really only eat a couple when they are young and a couple every other day when they are older, you don’t need to mix anything or sanitize, you really just dust a bit on bugs with calcium powder and leave them inside the enclosure that’s it, leopards geckos also choose a spot to poop and from what I seen it’s always a plain empty clear spot and are VERY unlikely to poop on you, unlike a crestie, leopard geckos are a bit cleaner in my opinion, therefore it’s easier just to clean their enclosure, a leopard gecko also requires less humidity and most importantly they are more hardy and forgiving of mistakes while cresties are more prone to stress, idk I think that if you really want the ultimate beginning reptile it’s a leopard gecko but if really don’t want to feed insects and want to clean more poop all around and more maintenance then go for a crestie, your basically trading one thing for another,

    I live in a place where the humidity is variable. Sometimes it's very humid. Sometimes there's barely any humidity. And that's during all times of the year. Overall though, I prefer arid over humid when it comes to maintenance, especially when factoring in heating.
    It just seems to me that given my circumstances and the fact that my house is at some times of the year temperature controlled(air conditioning during hot summer days, heating in the winter) and that getting heat bulbs isn't a problem for me, that it's a question of how easy the humidity is to maintain given the temperature.
    Keeping high humidity and high temperature is harder than either moderate temperature and high humidity(Crested Gecko) or high temperature and low humidity(Bearded Dragon and to a lesser extent Leopard Gecko). So if I'm going for heat, I prefer arid by a wide margin. If I'm going for a lower temperature, humid or arid doesn't really make a big difference in maintenance, although humid might be slightly easier. So it then comes down to how easy bioactive substrate is to maintain in either arid or humid environments, and from what I have gathered, it's easier to maintain a bioactive substrate in a humid environment.
    So really, either gecko is equally suitable for me in terms of temperature and humidity, both in the enclosure and outside.

    I'm convincing my parents for a Crsted Gecko.
    I live in a kinda cold environment but it is always wet (UK). I have a 2 breeders near my city plus one of them is an exotic vet. I'm still in the progress to find another but as long as I have one right now. Our chain stores are called Pets at Home, they are not too bad and don't recommend carpets and mainly use paper towels and substrate, but to play it safe I will use an exotic vet. I used to have 2 dwarf hamsters (cutest things ever) and they lived 3.5 years which was 1.5 years longer, which we got from our local pet store. So hopefully I can get a crestie I'm thinking about buying one from a different city as it needs rehoming and comes along with it's tank but it is in South Glasgow which a few hours away but wish me luck.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 роки тому

      Eco earth is not a good substrate. It’s unnatural, dusty when dry, and can be hard on their joints. Have you checked online for soil and playsand? I’d aim for manure-free potting soil rather than top soil. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t need to be organic or fertilizer free. Try to get soil that doesn’t contain peat moss, since peat moss is harmful to the environment. Timberline is a good brand for soil, Quikrete is a good playsand brand.

    Crested gecko hands down, they don’t need lots of heating and prefer it cool(you may use a UTH stuck to the side of the enclosure to give some heat during the cooler months) and they don’t need live insects. Their diets are complete, which makes it easy to feed them, however once you become brave enough to feed insects, they only benefit from it.
    Really the only thing they need is a larger enclosure with some live plants, like pothos.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 2 роки тому

      UTHs are not a good heat source. They do nothing for the ambient temperature and only produce IRC (you want a heat source that produces IRA and IRB). Cresties benefit from a heat lamp. And they should absolutely get live insects at least 1-2 times a week. They can survive without them, but there’s a difference between surviving and thriving.

    I was interested in the part at the beginning of the video where you ripped Pets at Home a new one. (You didn't name them but we all know there's only one nationwide chain in this country).
    When looking into getting a lizard for my son (he wanted a beardie, but we eventually diverted him towards a leo), I visited local independents at first. I wasn't particularly impressed, to be frank - cleanliness, handling etc. They did know their stuff, but they weren't any more knowledgeable than the woman who we ended up talking to at Pets at Home, who told us everything we needed to know about caring for a leo, and ensured that we had all of the necessary equipment, and that we had the environment set up and stable in a vivarium of adequate size.
    Just because you don't know the husbandry is bad at an independent shop doesn't mean it's good - what's the logic for assuming that smaller is better? They have a much smaller risk of bad publicity, if anything they would be worse. Who will care what suppliers they use or cruel practices they may have?
    The animals at Pets at Home are in good condition in my experience, at least the reptiles and fish, don't know about the mammals. They have an in-house vet, which is where my son's leo will go if he gets unwell.
    Overall I've had a good experience with them. My only complaint is that their supply of live food can be a little hit-and-miss, but they're not my only option so it's never been a problem. I wouldn't hesitate to go to them ahead of my local independents.

    Crested gecko or gargoyle geckos are my favorite! I own both and both amazing. If you like the crested gecko but want something slightly different and a more unique look. A gargoyle gecko is the best ! Their care in my Experience is identical to cresteds and as adults are similar sizes. Just look way more cool and regal in my opinion. But I love my crested and gargoyle so much. Their names are Chili (crested) and Taki (garg)
    Both geckos are wonderful! Ive looked after a few leopard geckos but I just don’t personally love them the same as my arboreal geckos. Also the occasional insect feedings is way more my league then needing insects on hand 24-7. Also arboreal tanks are way easier for me to get massive tanks and the room for them !
