  • Crested geckos (Correlophus ciliatus), and leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are both very popular pets, and that is because they are both adorable, and they are both fantastic pet reptiles. They are stinkin' rad! But which is the best pet reptile? To figure that out, we will have to put them head to head!

I had a leopard gecko when I was at uni until my landlord found out... he was called Statham and used to chill on my chest while we watched films.
The amount of times I used to nod off and wake up in a panick only to find him chilling on my shoulder under my hair.
He was the easiest most relaxing pet I ever had.
The ONLY down side is he used to poop on people sometimes and the amount they wee when they go will easily soak the full thigh section on a pair of Jean's!

I own both species and more. Personally I think leopard geckos are the greatest all round lizard of all. Whilst I admit they are not necessarily my favourite they are the best to keep. There just so easy and rewarding. Rewarding in the sense they feel more of a typical pet. They are more your “buddy” than a crested is. Cresteds feel more “wild” so to speak. Which is great still. There just very different I feel. Both great pets non the less

Love your comparison & education. I have kept both and found no end of frustration with my Leopards. My Crestie was the easiest boy in the world - although I do keep my house on the warm side. Personally, I think for a kid, I would recommend the Crestie first. It could be in a quiet corner of the family room & if the kid *did* give up care; all the parent has to is mix food every other day + mist 2x/day vs crickets & worms, vitamin powder, heat/humidity checks on a Leo. ... again, this is my idea, but I love your presentation and enthusiasm. I have owned both and let me tell you my honest opinion, crested geckos area tap harder on maintaining especially with cleaning and feeding, a crested gecko poops a bit more often then a leopard gecko and they poop on the foliage on the sides of the enclosure, on everywhere they can, you also need to clean their food dish way more often and have good sanitation where you prepare their food mix so they don’t grow in bacteria and get sick, yes you can keep them at low room temp but that doesn’t mean you should and it doesn’t mean your household will always have the perfect 75 f which means depending on where you live you might need some heat source or cooling source, leopard geckos on the other hand yes you do have to feed live feeders, but you don’t have to feed crickets you can feed easier handling feeders like mealworms or bsfl, and they really only eat a couple when they are young and a couple every other day when they are older, you don’t need to mix anything or sanitize, you really just dust a bit on bugs with calcium powder and leave them inside the enclosure that’s it, leopards geckos also choose a spot to poop and from what I seen it’s always a plain empty clear spot and are VERY unlikely to poop on you, unlike a crestie, leopard geckos are a bit cleaner in my opinion, therefore it’s easier just to clean their enclosure, a leopard gecko also requires less humidity and most importantly they are more hardy and forgiving of mistakes while cresties are more prone to stress, idk I think that if you really want the ultimate beginning reptile it’s a leopard gecko but if really don’t want to feed insects and want to clean more poop all around and more maintenance then go for a crestie, your basically trading one thing for another,
