To be honest, with the technology we have today, "not wanting to put prosthetics on the actor" is NOT a valid excuse. Like, back in 1977, sure I get it, but today?
YOU HAVE CGI JUST USE THAT

The reason Katee Sackhoff looks like Bo Katan is because the character's appearance was based on her from the beginning. Filoni had Katee in mind when he created Bo for her to voice in CW and also hoped she'd get to play her in live action eventually, so this was always the plan

Katee Sackhoff recently told in one episode of her Podcast that Bo Catan was designed after the image of Dave Filonis Wife. I honstly don´t know wether Katee Sackhoff did play a part in the Character design of Bo Katan but Dave Filonis first intentions was, as i said based on his Wife.

I just wanted to add to the Ahsoka bit. They have also done longer lekku in live action before. Shaak Ti is also a Togruta and she had long ass lekku. Granted, Shaak Ti didn't have to move very much with the prosthetics on, thus having them that long would be impractical for more acrobatic scenes. But even still, they could've found some kind of way to get longer lekku and still made the costume maneuverable. There are many ways to get good looking results without sacrificing functionality. Other than that, I do agree that Rosario Dawson is the perfect casting for Ahsoka and her performance is amazing.

    • @wordlesslfiddling

Hell they could have cgid them
And I'm going to have to respectfully disagree roasrio kind if vaguely looks like ahsoka but just doesn't act like her she's wooden and acts uninterested most the time and dint give me the she's older she acts differently crap if we didnt know that was ahsoka would you really think she is roasrio is just an orange lady
But the girl who played younger ahsoka during the flashbacks she did a good job

    • @sinisterisrandom8537

@@wordlesslfiddling Ever since Ahsoka left the Jedi Order, she has been in a state of uncertainty it doesn't matter how much time has passed. Once you learn the results it will have an impact on you. Now could Rosario Dawson be a bit more expressive for sure. However, her personality is comparable to an older Ahsoka from Rebels which was a lot more neutral in mind.
She's 47 in terms of lore, people around this age aren't going to magically act like a child or a teenager, they have their own worries issues, and limitations due to age. Aside from this Ahsoka is also struggling to balance both the Light and Dark since she is a Grey Jedi and their code is.
      "Flowing Through All
      There is Balance
      There is no peace without
      A passion to create
      Knowledge stagnates without
      The Strength to Act
      There is Freedom in
      Life
      There is a purpose in
      Death
The force is all things and
      I am the Force"
Obviously, there are different ways to write this but all dictate the same thing in the show it shows she fears to let the dark side out as she fears it will consume her. Which is also now affecting her own decision-making.

Wasn't there a scene in the arc with the brother, sister, and father where an older Ahsoka comes up in a vision to padaway Ahsoka warning her of the dangers ahead? I vaguely remember her Lekku were much longer. Guess you can say that is just a vision and not a real version of her but still, would've been cool to see something like that

Also just because Ashoka has aged doesn’t mean that it is a sensible choice to vastly change her characteristics without explaining why. And her main characteristics is her compassion and stubbornness with witty humour sprinkled around it. She went from an energetic and compassionate character in clone wars to an older and more reserved version in rebels (great character development) to an emotionless and bland wooden imitation in mandolin and her own show. And as a big Ashoka fan (from clone wars and rebels at least, I rly disliked her in her own show - her appearance in mando was iffy but I could stand it).

At least the Grand Inquisitor actually has an explanation for his different appearance, as Reva likely destroyed one of his stomachs when she stabbed him, leaving him with only one. This means that it’d be much harder for him to gain weight, leading to him becoming skinnier as we see in Rebels. It’s still silly though, and he should’ve just looked the same from the start, but at least it can be explained

7:59 So. At first I was going to go on a tangent about how Doug Chiang (the guy speaking) was the art director for the prequels and how I’m so confused he would have messed this up, BUT, I just looked into that a bit further and apparently he only worked on 1 and 2, not 3. So I suppose it’s fair he didn’t realize they had created that design already, but it’s a bummer no one else thought to relay that to him. He has done great work for Star Wars.

Regarding the eyes: Harry Potter in the books famously inherited his mom's green eyes. When shooting the first movie they actually tried to give him contacts, but either he had an allergic reaction or they hurt him in general (contacts for kids can be difficult), so Daniel Radcliffe played the role with his normal gray eyes. To maintain eye continuity, the studio cast the also gray-eyed Geraldine Somerville as the adult Lily Potter. Years later, Ellie Darcey-Alden was cast to play young Lily. She in turn has brown eyes, so they tried contacts again, but similarly to Daniel Radcliffe, she had some sort of reaction, so she played the role without them. Her part was pretty short, so I think after effects could have done the trick, but that wasn't done for some reason.
TLDR: Contacts, especially with children, seem to be kind of a hassle.

Cad banes voice sounded great cause it was the voice actor, corey burton, who voiced him again. Lars mikkelson also has crazy natural high cheekbones so the only prosthetics used was his forehead and the actor has a real lanky muscular body(hes also 6,4"), the reason he has a gut is simply the clothes. He also voiced him in the show. Almost all SW clothes on actors makes them look bigger. Unless its like a shirt, pants, dress and maybe vest or sweater. Rosario Dawson had 14yr old Ahsoka lekku for practical purposes. As another commenter said, the actress for shaak ti didn't move around much and it was BECAUSE of the lekku and montrails. They eere so big she had trouble just walking! I mean Ahsoka is Dave Filoni's baby, you really think he wouldn't do everything possible to have her perfect in live action? It just can't be done in some instances. Almost all the characters on the list were created or used by Dave Filoni when he was doing animation and hes George Lucas' apprentice. You can ask the guy anything about SW its continuity etc and he knows it (like Grand Inquisitors race, Paawan, being in live action first) but he comes from an animation background. Doug Chiang had to wrangle him in a bit cause Filoni wanted the characters 100% accurate.

    • @andrewdominate
      @andrewdominate  Рік тому +7

I'm aware of all this, but thanks. Also, that gut is not just a side effect of "the cloths". Lars has a gut. I've seen him interviews. I am glad they casted him in live action because he does have similar bone structure to Thrawn except for the forehead. That's what I was referring too when I said "prosthetics". Plus I love his thrawn voice. In regards to Ahsoka, I am already aware as to why her Lekku are so short. But the reasoning is irrelevant because I was ranking it on accuracy. Anyway I'm glad you liked the video dude. What's your what's your ranking?

Doug was likely stuck with a no-win situation. The actor was cast likely for performance reasons and nothing else, and either he didn’t want to act through a huge prosthetic or the budget wouldn’t allow for that kind of daily makeup expense. That left Doug with the impossible task of not only redesigning the character based on these limitations but also coming up with a plausible explanation for why (without throwing anyone under the bus).

They were forced to make them short so Rosario could move easily and duel normally, they didn't really want to make them short, but had no choice really. Some say that Shaak Ti in ROTS had long lekku's and there was no problem with that. Difference is that Shaak Ti was just in one scene and she was mainly sitting on the floor, Ahsoka was dueling in the show.

Ahoka's Lekku was shorter because the longer Lekku would had a problem when doing fight scenes.

That’s not really an excuse to have it be shorter than it should be and they could have had it be shorter and use CG to have it look as long as it should

Dang this was a great video. I would love to see something similar but the opposite, like top 15 worst character transitions from live action to animation if that makes sense. Yea itll be a lot more subjective becayse of the art style purposely making caricatures, but it would be a cool video nonetheless

I didn't include background characters or characters with very minor rolls. Hamato was in one scene in Star Wars Resistance. I also didn't include Jai Kell because he literally didn't have any lines in Ahsoka. At the beginning of the video, I did say I wasn't going to be including a few characters. I just did a "☝️🤓 Um Actually" to YOUR "☝️🤓 Um Actually".

Sabine in Ahsoka looks nothing like she does in Rebels. They had to add a piss filter to the scene where she looks at the mural with her Rebels incarnation drawn on it to distract from how different the actress looks from her animated incarnation (even ignoring the stylistic choices of Rebels' art-style).

I understand reworking Ahsoka and the GI for functionality in action sequences, more dynamic movement, long shoot days, etc. Obviously, being a background character and a main character with action sequences and extended scenes means there can't be the exact same design elements for several reasons, but it still feels too toned down. I wonder if there just weren't any other ways to approach them or how they could push those difficult design elements further. Doug Chiang's explanation of the Grand Iquisitor probably doesn't help that point though, lol.

Wait no! Bo is definitely above Sabine if just slightly. I agree Sabine’s maneurisms and armor were great, but I need her doing more artsy stuff. Bo Katan always felt seamless to me. Though I do agree that Zeb was done really well. I’d give many of the characters that appeared for the first time in Ahsoka a chance to be tweaked in later projects. I bet Herra’s makeup and Thrawn’s prosthetics will be improved over time like with Ahsoka.

I agree that the Grand Inquisitor definently could have been portrayed better in live action, especially because he didn't have any fight scenes. Thus not needing significant adjustments like with Ahsoka's montrals. But you suggested that Doug Chang dosn't get Star Wars but he has been working on Star Wars since the phantom menace.

To be fair, the overall continuity, as you say, of the Torguta head tails is odd. They tend to slip in length, depending on the age, if I'm not mistaken. So her show has it well. But, yes, the Mandalorian did crack it. Then again, I'm biased because, to be fair, she's my favourite character in the whole Star Wars. Others share a second place, but she holds the sweet first spot. Sometimes shared, though that's very rare and she's never overthrown. Anyways, yeah, the head tails are odd in general, or so I've noticed, so...

I'll say this as to why Jason's eyes weren't green -- due to laws regarding children on sets of films and child actors, unlike an adult, they cannot coax or convince a child to wear contact lenses if they are allergic to them, and most film companies do NOT want to risk a child actor having an allergic reaction like that because it can be very serious and it will mean the child HAS to be hospitilised. No one wants that for a child. They likely decided in post not to digitally edit it, either, because that's a lot of money down the drain on a small detail that will look even worse if a few frames are missed in post-edit.

Tbh, my main complaint about the grand inquisitor is the head, and it's NOT impossible AT ALL to get something close to that head shape. My uncle literally has the head shape from the cartoon. I wouldn't expect him to get hired, but you can't tell me you can't find some megamind lookin dude that's a half decent actor.

My top picks are probably Bo Katan and Ahsoka. Herra took some getting used to, but once I got over the different voice I think she was done well. Oh Thrawn is up there too though I need to see more of him before ranking him. I thinknk Ezra is just above Thrawn for me. Definitely in the top 3 to 5 for me. Of course characters like Cad Bane and Zeb were done well, these were just the ones that stuckck out to me when I thouhht about my rankings. Buut Bo’s definitely right at the top either way.

Couldn’t disagree more both Sabine and Ahsoka look terrible.
The makeup and tails on Ahsoka look extremely fake like they didn’t even try to make it look real (the prequels did a better job with Aayla secura)
As for Sabine the actress fits the part but her armour looks like absolute shit, it’s looks like cheap plastic. (They did a 10/10 job with bo but a terrible 3/10 job with Sabine. Awful.
Bo and Ezra looked great though.

As much as a I agree with you that the Grand inquisitors design was flawed, to say "Disney Star Wars just hire people who know nothing about Star Wars" is ridiculous as the person you are talking about and clip you shown is literally Doug Chiang lol, he was lead for Lucasfilm's art department in 1995 as he was the design director for Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and today is the senior vice president and executive design director of Lucasfilm. Yes the design is flawed but he definitely knew of the previous design from revenge of the Sith. Obviously there was massive issues at play behind the scenes that we don't know about. But Doug has done incredible work for years.

I think every rebel in the Ahsoka show including Ahsoka was perfect! Yes, Ahsoka's lakuu, (sorry I can't spell that lol) in the Mandalorian were way too short, and it did kind've annoy me. In Ahsoka, they fixed them. They might not be quite as long as her animated counterpart, but being an actual headpiece, I completely understand, so it doesn't bother me anymore. Rasario was perfect casting! Just like Natasha was perfect casting for Sabine and so on!!! I don't have any problem with Sabine now, but when she first cut her hair, I admit, I didn't like it. That's how her hair is in Rebels though, so it grew on me, but I prefer her long hair she had if I'm being honest. Speaking of the Ahsoka show, I thought it was as perfect as Dave could make it!!! I love it with a passion, and everything made sense to me!!! 10/10!!! I'm so beyond happy season 2 got confirmed and Dave got promoted to CCO!!!!!

I feel most of these critiques are kinda petty. Like not everyone can put on colored contacts to match the eye color in their animated counterpart. To you it may be distracting, but to most people it’s barely even noticeable. Performance and portrayal matters most at the end of the day, and quite a number of them deserves higher spots on this list for performance alone.
