      Hello-
      I've seen many bird owners use nail filers, will that work too?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 років тому

      Yes you could try but if the nails are excessively long they should be clipped first and then filed.

    I trim my birds beaks and nails. You just showed me that I am doing good with the nails, so I really appreciate it. For the beaks, I use to have two, a lennie for the top part and a parotlet for the bottom part. M'y langue does not have This problem anymore. Your video on beaks is for a serious misalignenent. Poor thing. So thx as always and waiting for your next one.

    Glad I watched this video. Now I know that I certainly should not clip the nails on my 4 parakeets (budgies) that I recently adopted from a rescue shelter; have never done it before. Will seek a bird vet or bird groomer to do the clipping. Also, it was great that you pointed out that the birds need a chew block to keep their beaks in shape; I thought the cuttlebone was sufficient, but now I know otherwise. Thanks so much.

    Thank you so much for this video! I took over the care of my friend's Lord Derby's parakeet cause they couldn't handle it and wanted to get rid of it. I never thought of getting a bird before, but I just fell in love with the little dude so I took him in. I've been scouring the web for informative videos for proper care and came across your channel when I noticed his nails getting a little too long and was worried he'd start getting caught in things. I'll be sure to get them trimmed asap (I wasn't sure before if the nails would get trimmed naturally from rough perches). Either way, thank you so so much!

    Thank you. I use a bird nail trimmer, but I must say your comment about using a normal nail trimmer for more control was well taken. When they are comfortable with you, they will literally put the whole talon in the trimmer! You need to back it out! With care, no one bled and all 3 of them were very happy to have a trim. LESS IS BETTER! One Bird Per Day. Care Care Care. And they will all smile. My English budgie was enjoying a large diameter perch the next day!

    Thank you for sharing with us. Been doing all my animals for years now, some get use to it others not. Some pet stores sell sandpaper you but on their perches to keep nails short. That is a big no no. They can rub the skin under their toes raw and can cause blisters or even an abscess.

    • @Loveofpets

    Appreciate this video. I am trying to begin cutting our 7 budgie's nails. I'm mostly trying to get comfortable restraining them and taking little snips of the nails. Is it normal for a budgie to start to close it's eyes when restrained. To clarify the budgie does not seem sleepy as it's agitated from being restrained. However, on it's back and getting nails clipped they often start to close their eyes. Thanks

  • @teardropface

    Great video! You mentioned “click click” sounds. Does that mean the bird is having trouble breathing or something to do with the lung or heart? I did noticed that during a few times when my Mango was in a panic mode and he was in flight, he will emit something between a squeaking and clicking sounds . Then it quickly stops as soon as he lands. I wonder if that’s the same clicking sound as you were describing. For my Mango to be in flight and panic mode, I believe it might be an exercised induced asthma.

    • @Loveofpets

    how do birds in nature get their nails taken care of?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  2 роки тому

      Birds in nature are always foraging and digging and on different surfaces to keep nails short however some wild birds nails can grow excessively long and get caught in trees etc and die while struggling to get out. I have seen a bird that was deceased hanging from a wire with his nail stuck. Some people will rescue wild birds like myself and bring to a wildlife center where they can help them with their nails. Wild birds have a hard life and only the fitess survive. Luckily we can clip our pet bird nails

      @@Loveofpets We've trimmed Lui's nails many times sense first watching this video, and we're now very used to the process together. Afterwards, Lui runs right back onto my shoulder, and preens like nothing unusual has happened. Thanks for this video! Question: What is the link for the chewing block shown in the video?
      I think Lui's beak is perfectly fine, but I can't tell if maybe her beak is minutely longer than I'd like it to be. She chews on lots of things, but not a lot of hard objects. So I'd like to get her a chewing block like yours in the video. But all the options are mineral supplements. I don't want to give her a supplement she doesn't need, just a fun toy to chew on. Hi. If the nails are more curved like a semi circle or curve too much where they can't grasp perches or they can't place their foot on a flat surface comfortably. Their toes should touch the surface on flat surfaces and not be Crocker or bent upwards. Hope this helps.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 років тому +2

      The cuttlebones are not strong enough to trim the beak and are for calcium. If your birds are females and lay eggs they will need calcium. You can scrap the cuttlebone and put a small amount on top of their food. For beak trimming put harder mineral blocks and wooden toys to chew on. Place them near a Perch where they can reach it. You can try putting a piece of millet spray beside the cuttlebone or blocks and they may start to chew on the cuttlebone and blocks.

      Yes you can use a human nail file for the nails, just make sure to hold the nail steady.

    Mam how much time it takes for a beak to grow back

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 років тому +2

      It can take a long time depending on how much of the beak is missing. In some cases if the beak is severely damaged, it won't grow back. Please take your bird to an exotic vet for an examination.

      You should take him to an avian vet to trim the beak. Pick up him up in a towel so you don't get bit.

      Jeffry, I hope your avian vet teaches you to handle your birds and how to read their body language by looking at their crests.

    I saw your indian ringneck in some older videos being extremely hormonal, and I wonder if you know why she's doing this?
    Thought I'd comment on here, to have a higher chance of getting a response.

      Hi, birds get hormonal during breeding season and that's normal but she does get excited when she sees me and does the mating stance and noise, I believe it's to show affection to me but they do that when they want to mate with their mate. When a bird loves you they want to mate with you if that makes sense 😃

    • @kiwilllt
      @kiwilllt 5 років тому

      @@Loveofpets They only get THAT hormonal when you make them. If you don't touch them in places you shouldn't be, they would not be acting out like that though. Did you adopt this indian ringneck? Or are you petting her near her cloaca?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  5 років тому +1

      Hi, I am not new to owning birds, of course I don't pet her cloaca, why would I touch that area. lol. I know that her back is not supposed to be petted or pet her all the way down her back and tail. She shows me her affection since she was 8 weeks old. All female ringnecks do this to their owners its just the way they are. Cockatiels bend their head down to be petted and ringnecks bend it up to be petted. My Lovebirds lays in my hand to be petted, each bird has their own way to show affection. It just happens that the ringnecks mating stance is the same as her affection stance. Dont worry I know how to pet a bird. I dont make her hormonal. She does the stance everyday no matter if breeding season or not. She does it as soon as I look at her or walk by her cage so there is no way to avoid it. I would have to put her in a dark closet and never look at her to make her stop, its the way she is, nothing I can do will stop it. Its normal. I have to pet her sometimes and show her affection or whats the use of owning her? I cant ignore her.
